Like to teach! Whether with the expectant, half-frightened freshman, the senior, worried about his preparation now that . he must get out and meet competition, or the graduate student interested in new discoveries, I like to work with all of them.
I have been teaching a long time now. As has always been the case when one generation is thinking of turning over its work to the next, I am glad to have the opportunity to talk about some of the things that I consider important in this job of teaching.
The most varied and the most acute problems of …

A significant phase of the modern high school curriculum is the program of specialized guidance services to pupils. The importance of providing personalized services as a means of aiding individuals to grow toward social and occupational adequacy is becoming more and more definitely recognized by educators today. Monroe (1), in discussing the literature in this field, gives the following definition of personnel services:
"As differentiated from instruction and the business affairs... student personnel work refers to all activities undertaken or sponsored by an educational institution, aside from curricular instruction, in which the student's personal development is the primary consideration. Student …

Prior to 1820 the teaching profession in the United States was composed predominantly of men. However, with the opening of the American social and economic world to woman, the female teachers became more numerous, until at the close of World War II only about 6 percent of the elementary school teachers in the United States were men.

Chlorosis of the foliage of higher plants has constituted a severe fertility problem in many areas of the world. It has been reported in no less than 30 countries. It has manifested itself in the western states and has usually been associated with a high CaCO3 content in the soil.
This chlorosis does not always result from lack or unavailability of one of the essential elements, but can result from several conditions around the plant roots or psychological processes taking place within the plant. Both the absence of iron in the Boil and conditions which provoke its unavailability to …

An Evaluation Of Necessary Elements For Desirable Industrial Arts Instruction In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, Lee W. Ralphs
An Evaluation Of Necessary Elements For Desirable Industrial Arts Instruction In The Elementary Schools Of Utah, Lee W. Ralphs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
An essential part of the elementary school curriculum is the creative activity program connected with it. Educators believe that the fullest development of the child can best be attained through a program which provides a series of well selected experiences and activities. At present education considers the whole child--his abilities, needs, and interests--as vital factors in the development of a good curriculum, instead of merely the concrete and formal subject matter. Recently there has been an expressed view, by administrators of elementary school systems and many authorities and industrial arts teachers, that there is a definite need for formulating an …

High School Grades And College Aptitude Tests As Indices To College Achievement And Contination At Utah State Agricultural College, Walter Clarence Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For many years colleges have been concerned about entrance requirements and procedures for admitting students. In fact, to deal with such matters was one purpose of the famous N.E.A Committee of Ten which reported in 1893. A few years later the Committee on College Entrance Requirements met and considered the problem directly. Transcripts of credits from high school including specified subjects, the passing of the generally recognized College Entrance Board Examination, and the passing of entrance examinations set up by the individual colleges all have been used as evidence for admission to college. Such examinations are also used as indicators …

A Study Of The Changes Of Personality, Attitudes, And Speech Problems Of An Adult Stutterer While Undergoing Speech Therapy, Halvor P. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There are more than one million stutterers in the United States today, no less than 350,000 of whom are public school children (21). Rogers (22) estimated that the number of stuttering children in the United States is five times as many as the combined numbers of blind and deaf children. The incidence of stuttering is around one percent of the population (2,6,20). Around 20,000 stutterers are added to the number annually each year (13). Stutterers have been helped by many different methods of treatment based on many conflicting theories and therapies.

Establishing Criteria For The Pre-Service Selection Of Teachers With Special Application To The Utah State Agricultural College, Howard H. Barron
Establishing Criteria For The Pre-Service Selection Of Teachers With Special Application To The Utah State Agricultural College, Howard H. Barron
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Our American culture and civilization depends in large measure upon the recruiting of the right kind of men and women to be teachers in our American schools and colleges. All professions depend on effective teaching for their life blood. Many educators and colleges during the past few years have become concerned with pre-service selection methods for improving the teaching personnel. This concern has become somewhat intensified at the present time, largely as a result of four factors. One factor is the large number of returning servicemen, who are turning to teaching as a career. A second factor is improved salaries …

Prediction of future performance is attempted in almost every field of endeavor. The accuracy varies in different lines of study, and perhaps none is as subject to variability as those attempted with human beings as subjects.
When an attempt is made to ascertain in advance the performance of college students in their schoolwork, a multiplicity of complicating problems are introduced. Whereas intelligence can be fairly well isolated, it is difficult to control or even enumerated all the other factors that come into the problem of predicting grades from scores received on an intelligence examination. Among the factors that are difficult …
Institution Building In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes
Institution Building In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes
Faculty Honor Lectures
The slow growth of civilization and the early meagerness of tested knowledge in any but the most pressing and practical matters undoubtedly conditioned and determined the nature of primitive collective thinking. Large assumptions had to be made about all things. Trial and error methods were slow methods. Only in his late maturity as knowledge multiplied has man found ways of testing the validity of an hypothesis so that assumption-making could become a tool of advancement rather than a controlling mechanism. Superstition, a large component in the culture of even the most advanced peoples, was an inevitable adjunct of progress. As …
