Teaching And Learning In Context In Natural Resources Science And Management, Virginia S. Lee, Alan Letarte, Sarah Banks Jan 2002

Teaching And Learning In Context In Natural Resources Science And Management, Virginia S. Lee, Alan Letarte, Sarah Banks

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

A vast body of research from education, psychology, and neuroscience suggests that learning is highly context dependent, acquired through experience and involvement in real-world situations. In contrast, traditional teaching methods often disassociate learning from meaningful contexts, and students spend more time passively watching and listening than actually doing. Exclusive use of methods like these is particularly inappropriate in natural resources science and management, because of the professional orientation of these curricula. This workshop will explore three related teaching strategies that promote learning through engagement in real-world contexts and situations: role-play, case studies, and problem-based learning. Participants will identify what learning …

I'S And E'S Of Natural Resources Education, Or, Moving From Learner To Teacher, Gary J. San Julian Jan 2002

I'S And E'S Of Natural Resources Education, Or, Moving From Learner To Teacher, Gary J. San Julian

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Natural Resources provide some of the most fertile and interesting subjects for an educator to present. Yet, our undergraduate and graduate students are poorly prepared to be educators. Few Master's or Doctoral programs require any education courses before a degree is bestowed. We touch hundreds of students each year in our classes who will become professionals, but are we giving them the tools to pass on their love of the resource to the next generation? Undergraduates and graduate students who are taking our courses should, in my opinion, have the skills and more importantly the desire to pass on the …

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel Nov 2001

Effect Of Cooling Rate On Crystallization Behavior Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of cooling rate (slow: 0.1°C/min; fast: 5.5°C/min) on the crystallization kinetics of blends of a highmelting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil (SFO) was investigated by pulsed NMR and DSC. For slow cooling rate, the majority of crystallization had already occurred by the time the set crystallization temperature had been reached. For fast cooling rate, crystallization started after the samples reached the selected crystallization temperature, and the solid fat content curves were hyperbolic. DSC scans showed that at slow cooling rates, molecular organization took place as the sample was being cooled to crystallization temperature and there was fractionation …

Phylogenetic Relationships, Taxonomy, And Evolution Of Host Choice In Diadasia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), Sedonia D. Sipes May 2001

Phylogenetic Relationships, Taxonomy, And Evolution Of Host Choice In Diadasia (Hymenoptera: Apoidea), Sedonia D. Sipes

Biology

I examined the phylogenetic relationships, taxonomy, and evolution of host choice in Diadasia, a genus of New World bees. Diadasia species are particularly interesting because they are considered pollen specialists. Females of each species are believed to provision their nests with pollen from only a few closely related plant taxa. At the same time, the choice of floral hosts within the genus is diverse, and includes five distantly related plant families: Malvaceae, Onagraceae, Convolvulaceae, Asteraceae, and Cactaceae. To estimate phylogenetic relationships within this group, I sequenced ~ 2 kb of the mitochondrial genes CO I and II and tRNA …

Variations In The Histamine Content Of Mink Testes Due To Injections Of Gonadotrophic Hormones And Application Of Free Radicals In Vitro, Grant I. Wilson May 2001

Variations In The Histamine Content Of Mink Testes Due To Injections Of Gonadotrophic Hormones And Application Of Free Radicals In Vitro, Grant I. Wilson

Biology

It was hypothesized that gonadotropic hormones and oxygen-derived free radicals affect histamine production in the testes. Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, prolactin, a combination of these three hormones, or saline (controls) were injected for either 4 or 7 days into seven wild-type (demi) and seven dark male mink per group. All mink were euthanized with carbon monoxide. Their testes were removed and frozen on dry ice. The histamine content was analyzed using radioimmunoassay. The control wild-type mink injected for either 4 or 7 days had histamine values of 8.15 μg/g and 7.56 μg/g, respectively. In wild-type mink, there was no …

Internalizing Symptoms In Adolescents: Assessment And Relationship To Self-Concept, Sue Ann Dowd May 2001

Internalizing Symptoms In Adolescents: Assessment And Relationship To Self-Concept, Sue Ann Dowd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Internalizing disorders cause serious psychological problems for many adolescents. The effects can be both debilitating and long lasting. However, assessment of internalizing disorders has been plagued by limited measurement strategies. Historically, individual measures were developed to assess the narrow-band symptoms that are subsumed under the broad construct of internalizing disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, and social withdrawal). Recently, the Internalizing Symptom Scale for Adolescents has been created. The Internalizing Symptom Scale for Adolescents is a short screening measure that includes newer models of affect such as the tripartite model of affect. Additionally, there has been limited research on the …

Testing Models Of Depression And Paranoia In Men And Women: The Role Of Cognitive Style, Guilt, Shame, And Defense Mechanisms, Chad Sombke May 2001

Testing Models Of Depression And Paranoia In Men And Women: The Role Of Cognitive Style, Guilt, Shame, And Defense Mechanisms, Chad Sombke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gender differences in psychopathology have long been of interest in the fields of clinical, developmental, and personality psychology. Lewis proposed two models to explain the emergence of the development of gender differences in depression and paranoia. Lewis stated that gender differences in depression and paranoia can be traced to corresponding gender differences in cognitive style, guilt-proneness, shame-proneness, and the use of specific defense mechanisms. Although research evidence has validated certain components of these two models, neither model has ever been tested in its entirety. This research project intended to test Lewis's models in their entirety by utilizing structural equation modeling. …

Four research questions were asked about rituals and their use in substance abuse counseling: (1) Are addictions therapists using rituals? (2) How did therapists determine when to use rituals? (3) What types of rituals do they use? and (4) How do therapists assess ritual effectiveness? Results indicated that about three fourths of the mental health workers questioned were using rituals in their treatment protocol with substance abuse …

Correlates Of Antidepressant Medication Compliance Use Among Depressed Women, Pamela Linton May 2001

Correlates Of Antidepressant Medication Compliance Use Among Depressed Women, Pamela Linton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Medication compliance/noncompliance was examined in context of: severity of symptoms; medical side effects; medication education; perceived stigma; and effects on family/social support system. A null hypothesis was formulated for each correlate, stating that those patients who reported a high level of an independent variable (IV) would not be any more likely to discontinue their medication than patients who reported a low level of an IV. To obtain data, a medical usage questionnaire and a depression, assessment (OQ™-45.2) were used. Statistical significance was not obtained for any of the hypothesized relationships but trends were consistent with the established literature. The implication …

The second section was the collection of data of juvenile females who sexually offend in the State of Utah. After the data were collected, a profile was described and compared to that found in the Review of the Literature and a typology was presented.

Ecosystemic legacies were shown to be passed down from one generation to the next. The juveniles were found to come from highly chaotic homes, and subject to maltreatment. Diagnostically, they show symptoms of …

Teaching Tolerance Of Sexual Orientation In Schools, Amanda Marie Mcfarland May 2001

Teaching Tolerance Of Sexual Orientation In Schools, Amanda Marie Mcfarland

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

All students deserve the chance to learn in an environment where they feel safe from both physical and verbal abuse. Also, all students must learn how to work with a variety of people, including people of different cultures, religious beliefs, ability levels, and race in order to prepare them for a diverse world. This also includes people of different sexual orientations, which heretofore will be referred to as gay. Skills to get along with others are important for everybody. Learning how to respect people with various sexual orientations is as important as respecting people of various cultures, races and genders. …

Creating Community Greenbelts Through Tdr Zoning, Tim B. Watkins May 2001

Creating Community Greenbelts Through Tdr Zoning, Tim B. Watkins

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Many cities and towns in the lntennountain West were founded on the ideals of clustered community development with surrounding greenbelts by Morn1on settlers in the mid nineteenth century. Since the twentieth-century development of the automobile, increased mobility has enabled residential and commercial development to disrupt surrounding rural lands with scattered growth. Correctly applied, TOR (Transfer of Development Right) strategies could reverse negative sprawling development trends by channeling growth towards existing communities to simulate the abandoned pioneer town and country model. A community development transfer strategy can respect private property rights, and allow fanners to keep their land in agriculture while …

No study, to date, has systematically examined the interplay of social contact, depression, functional disability, and cardiovascular health when examining the relation between religious activity and all -cause mortality. This study used Cox regression models as well as a series of structural equation models to elucidate these relations and resultant mortality over a 5-year period. This sample included 3,607 persons, age 65 and older, who participated in the Cache County Study on Memory in Aging, and who were not demented. Results indicate that when using Cox regression modeling, after controlling for other variables related to mortality, both religious activity and …

Female Adolescent Role Models And Body Image, Tracy L. Funk May 2001

Female Adolescent Role Models And Body Image, Tracy L. Funk

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study primarily examined the relationship between role model choices and body image of female adolescents. More specifically this study sought to examine the relationship between the reasons that adolescent females give for choosing a role model and body image. Because body image dissatisfaction has been found to be associated with self-esteem and eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, these variables also were investigated. Body image was examined by using two measures of the body image construct· the Figure Rating Scale and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ). Both were used in order to capture a greater portion …

Therapeutic Benefits Of A Wilderness Therapy Program And A Therapeutic Community Program For Troubled Adolescents, Kreg J. Edgmon May 2001

Therapeutic Benefits Of A Wilderness Therapy Program And A Therapeutic Community Program For Troubled Adolescents, Kreg J. Edgmon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wilderness therapy is increasingly seen as a viable treatment alternative for troubled youth, yet there is a noticeable dearth of research comparing the effectiveness of wilderness therapy with more traditional treatment programs. To help address this research need, this study conducted an exploratory analysis of the therapeutic benefits of a wilderness therapy program, Wilderness Quest (WQ), compared to a therapeutic community program, Life-Line (LL). The WQ and LL programs both are based on a 12- step recovery philosophy and emphasize the integral role of the family in adolescent treatment.

The study employed a qualitative methodology, beginning with an extended period …

Intermediate Family Therapy Skills, Shannon L. Smietana May 2001

Intermediate Family Therapy Skills, Shannon L. Smietana

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The field of marriage and family therapy (MFT) has prospered since its beginnings nearly 50 years ago. In order to keep the field current and competitive with other related professions, empirical research is necessary. Although there has been an upsurge of research on the effectiveness and specialty areas of MFT, one area has been overlooked: skills. The empirical research that has been performed has focused its attention on beginning therapists. The current research took the next step in determining family therapy skills and investigated the skills needed by intermediate-level therapists--not beginners, yet also not advanced therapists.

This research surveyed a …

Perceived Family Relationships Associated With Coming Out Of Mormon Male Homosexuals, Brad Benson May 2001

Perceived Family Relationships Associated With Coming Out Of Mormon Male Homosexuals, Brad Benson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is one of the first to include data from both male homosexuals and their family members to investigate disclosure of sexual orientation. Being homosexual in U.S. society can be particularly traumatic for males because strong pressures oppose the violation of masculine gender norms. Being homosexual and Mormon has unique complications. Reactions from the Mormon community toward individuals of homosexual orientation is defined by prevailing attitudes toward homosexuality, which are largely based on existing theories of etiology, attribution of etiology, and the religious and cultural beliefs extant in the community. The role of family relationships in the coming out …

A 54.5% response rate yielded 373 usable completed questionnaires for data analysis.

For economic impact analysis, an …

Rangeland Resources Monitoring: Concepts And Practical Applications, Benny R. Bobwski May 2001

Rangeland Resources Monitoring: Concepts And Practical Applications, Benny R. Bobwski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

How does one person manage and monitor a half million acres of rangelands towards a sustainable future? Through a journey that begins with the understanding of sustainability, I explore the monitoring concept, two of its applications, and summarize with an emphasis on the art and science of management. Sustainability is a concept that confuses many managers because it is so complex. However, if one considers adaptability as the complement to sustainability, and realizes that an adaptable organism is a sustainable organism, then a manager can relate because the emphasis shifts from that of stability for the future to that of …

The humor group intervention consisted of take-home videotaped recordings of humorous materials. The comparison group intervention consisted of take-home video taped recordings of educational materials with motivational themes. Results indicated that subjects in both groups exhibited significant reductions in …

A Comparison Of The Relative Impact Of Structural And Dynamic Child Care Quality On Child Outcomes, Jared Cutler May 2001

A Comparison Of The Relative Impact Of Structural And Dynamic Child Care Quality On Child Outcomes, Jared Cutler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Child care researchers divide child care quality into two separate categories: structural child care quality (adult-child ratios, class size, amount of physical space, etc.) and dynamic child care quality (number and quality of teacher-child relationships). A consensus has emerged in the child care literature that structural child care quality has no direct effect on children's developmental outcomes (e.g., language development, social development, school readiness). Rather, structural child care quality facilitates dynamic child care quality, which then has a direct effect on child outcomes. While child care researchers frequently assert that structural variables merely facilitate dynamic variables, and have no direct …

Teacher Referral Of Children With Internalizing Problems, Heather J. Clark May 2001

Teacher Referral Of Children With Internalizing Problems, Heather J. Clark

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A survey addressing teacher referral of children with internalizing symptoms was developed and distributed to 883 first- through sixth-grade teachers in the state of Utah. The survey presented vignettes of children exhibiting symptoms of internalizing disorders. Respondents were asked if they would refer the child described in each vignette. The survey also asked respondents for information regarding the number of years they had been teaching, training they had received regarding children's mental health, the types of mental health services available within their schools, and their beliefs regarding types of services schools should provide. Four ANOVAs were calculated in analyzing the …

Other positive outcomes, incidentally observed, include enhanced prosocial behaviors and increased appropriate interactions among peers. This study examined the direct effects of a CWPT program on peer relations and academic performance. A mixed first- and second-grade general education classroom participated in a CWPT spelling intervention with a comparable control classroom. The study consisted of three phases-Baseline (4 weeks), Intervention (6 weeks), and Follow-up (4 weeks). Dependent measures included sociometric peer rating scales and spelling test scores. Results were analyzed by determining mean change for each participant and …

Internalizing Symptoms Of Children And Parenting Practices: An Exploratory Study, Kristi Lowe Stewart May 2001

Internalizing Symptoms Of Children And Parenting Practices: An Exploratory Study, Kristi Lowe Stewart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parenting practices are known to be associated with childhood behavior difficulties. Past research has focused on the association between parenting practices and externalizing behavior problems in children. The relationship between internalizing behavioral problems and parenting practices has received less empirical attention. The current study explored the connection between internalizing symptomology in children and parenting practices. Sixty-six parents and children between the ages of 8 and 12 were surveyed regarding internalizing symptomology and parenting practices. Results indicated that parents of children with internalizing symptomology displayed statistically significantly poorer parenting behaviors than did parents of children who were free of internalizing symptoms. …
