The Influence Of Initiators On Supply Chain Value Creation, J Jayaram, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan Jan 2004

The Influence Of Initiators On Supply Chain Value Creation, J Jayaram, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan

Management Faculty Publications

Value creation in the supply chain has attracted considerable attention in the literature. It has typically been characterized as being the result of either external or organization spanning, or internal efforts to improve supply chain performance. Few studies have examined the simultaneous effects of internally and externally focused efforts to improve supply chain performance. Moreover, there is no discussion in the literature of the precursors or initial conditions that lead to successful supply chains. Drawing from different theoretical perspectives, two key motivators or initiators of value creation in supply chains are identified: structural mechanisms and relationship building. It is proposed …

Controlling Choice: Teachers, Students, And Manipulatives In Mathematics Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, M. Gail Jones

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This research study examines the instructional practices of 10 middle grades teachers related to their use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics and their control of mathematics tools during instruction. Through 40 observations of teaching, 30 interviews, and an examination of 67 written documents (including teachers' plans and records), profiles were developed that describe how teachers used and controlled manipulatives during instruction. Results showed that teachers used a variety of manipulatives and other mathematics tools over the course of the year-long study. Teachers reported using a mathematics tool (manipulative, calculator, or measuring device) in 70% of their lessons, and this self-report …

The blatant barriers are down. Women are now routinely chief scientists on major cruises, lead field parties to all continents, and have risen to leadership positions in professional organizations, academic departments, and funding agencies. Nonetheless, barriers remain. Women continue to be under-represented in the Earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences.

Listening For A Life, Patricia Sawin Jan 2004

Listening For A Life, Patricia Sawin

All USU Press Publications

In one sense a folklorist's portrayal of a notable folk artist's life and art, Listening for a Life is equally a rethinking of the processes involved in such work, not only in how the folklorist conveys her subject but in how her subject constitutes and performs herself into being through dialogue with others: those present, those once present, those imagined and anticipated.

Drawing on Bahktinian and feminist theory, Sawin pushes forward our understanding of the interactive roles of ethnographer and subject and in the process gives us a deeper understanding of folk singer and storyteller Bessie Eldreth and her greatest …

Faithful Transgressions, Laura L. Bush Jan 2004

Faithful Transgressions, Laura L. Bush

All USU Press Publications

The central issue Bush finds in these works is how their authors have dealt with the authority of Mormon Church leaders. As she puts it in her preface, "I use the phrase 'faithful transgression' to describe moments in the texts when each writer, explicitly or implicitly, commits herself in writing to trust her own ideas and authority over official religious authority while also conceiving of and depicting herself to be a 'faithful' member of the Church." Bush recognizes her book as her own act of faithful transgression. Writing it involved wrestling, she states, "with my own deeply ingrained religious beliefs …

The Folly Of Dillydally, Arthur J. Caplan, John Gilbert

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Using information from on-line graded assignments in an intermediate microeconomics course, we find that non-procrastinators (both earlystarters and front-loaders) obtain higher scores than their dillydallying counterparts. We also find that while busier students tend to start their assignments earlier, they nevertheless back-load the bulk of their effort.

Cultural Nicknames: An Important Feature Of Galdós’ Art, Vernon A. Chamberlin Jan 2004

Cultural Nicknames: An Important Feature Of Galdós’ Art, Vernon A. Chamberlin

Decimonónica

Throughout his lifetime Galdós had a special fondness for and a creative interest in the use of nicknames. Gregorio Marañón, for example, says that until the end of his life, Don Benito delighted in using “apodos y motes [. . .] con que designaba constantemente a las personas de su trato, llenos [estos apodos] siempre de un hiperbólico gracejo” (71). We also know that Galdós and Concha-Ruth Morell, during the period of their intimacy, continually used a rich variety of nicknames not only to refer to each other, but also to other persons (Smith 91-120). Thus it is no surprise …

“My Reputación Precedes Me”: La Malinche And Palimpsests Of Sacrifice, Scapegoating, And Mestizaje In Xicoténcatl And Los Mártires Del Anáhuac, Lisa Nevárez

Decimonónica

The treachery of a woman, the violence of conquest, and the birth of the mestizo—these form the beginnings of Mexico’s history. Octavio Paz vocalizes the grito unique to Mexico, ¡Viva México, hijos de la Chingada!, and in so doing takes his place among the individuals salivating to blame La Malinche, also known as Marina or Malintzín, for her betrayal of her people by giving birth to Hernán Cortés’ child, the “first” mestizo and the ancestor of the modern Mexican.1 Examining the novels Xicoténcatl (1826), published anonymously, and Los mártires del Anáhuac (1870), by Eligio Ancona, facilitates a glimpse …

Gothic Larra, Rebecca Haidt Jan 2004

Gothic Larra, Rebecca Haidt

Decimonónica

Mariano José de Larra’s scathing review of Dumas’s Antony often is cited as evidence of his disapproval of the aesthetic excesses characteristic of Romantic productions.1 Comparatively few critics have remarked on Larra’s special disregard for the conventions of Romantic works we tend to classify as “Gothic”—texts and performances that expressly seek responses such as fear or horror.2 For example, he disdained Ducange’s El verdugo de Amsterdam particularly because (as he wrote in a review) that play makes audiences “llorar como haría llorar a cualquiera una paliza” (395), without appeal to an audience’s deeper moral and intellectual capacities. Though …

Background: Antioxidants may protect the aging brain against oxidative damage associated with pathological changes of Alzheimer disease (AD). Objective: To examine the relationship between antioxidant supplement use and risk of AD. Design: Cross-sectional and prospective study of dementia. Elderly (65 years or older) county residents were assessed in 1995 to 1997 for prevalent dementia and AD, and again in 1998 to 2000 for incident illness. Supplement use was ascertained at the first contact. Setting: Cache County, Utah. Participants: Among 4740 respondents (93%) with data sufficient to determine cognitive status at the initial assessment, we identified 200 prevalent cases of AD. …

Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson Aug 2003

Kula And The Trobriand Islands: The Meaning And Power Of Objects, Becky Tomlinson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Just as a word in a foreign language must be interpreted for one who does not speak the language, a cultural artifact alone holds no significance or meaning for an outsider. Thus, for an object to be understood it cannot stand alone, but must be placed in context though time and space, and various layers of cultural meaning must be expounded. The word lagim, from the Kiriwina language, may be roughly translated as meaning "the splashboard of a Kula canoe". This translation may give the proper words from English that denote the object, but it still leaves much to …

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon Jun 2003

Crystallization Of Sunflower Oil Waxes, Silvana Martini, M. C. Anon

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Activation free energies of nucleation (ΔG c ) were calculated using induction times of crystallization measurements. Results showed that ΔG c decreased exponentially as wax concentration increased at a constant crystallization temperature (T c ). In contrast, for a constant supersaturation, ΔG c increased from 12 to 22°C but decreased between 22 and 35°C. Melting behavior of purified waxes and solutions of purified waxes in sunflower oil were studied by DSC after crystallization at fast and slow cooling rates (20 and 1°C/min, respectively). Low supercooling temperatures (T c >65°C) showed an increase in the onset temperature (T 0 ) as …

The Evaluation Of A Graphical Pulmonary Display In Anesthesiology, S. Blake Wachter, Noah Syroid, James Agutter, Robert Albert, Frank Drews, Dwayne Westenskow May 2003

The Evaluation Of A Graphical Pulmonary Display In Anesthesiology, S. Blake Wachter, Noah Syroid, James Agutter, Robert Albert, Frank Drews, Dwayne Westenskow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We have developed graphic technology to display data from the respiratory monitors used during anesthesia. The display uses color, texture, shape and emergent features to highlight abnormal pulmonary physiology. Nineteen anesthesiologists participated in a simulator based evaluation (METI, Sarasota, FL.). Half the subjects used the metaphor display and half did not. Each subject was trained for 10 minutes on the pulmonary display. The time difference during the obstructed endotracheal tube did prove significant (p=0.02) in favor of the pulmonary display condition. During the intrinsic PEEP scenario, the subjects treated the patient earlier (positive trend p=0.l) with the pulmonary display compared …

Predicting Social And Psychological Adjustment From The Importance And Restrictiveness Of Religion In Late Adolescence, Lisa Diane Lucas May 2003

Predicting Social And Psychological Adjustment From The Importance And Restrictiveness Of Religion In Late Adolescence, Lisa Diane Lucas

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In working with Renee Galliher, I had the opportunity to administer a questionnaire to 118 college students. This questionnaire included the Personal and Relationships Profile (Strauss & Mouradian, 1999), as well as questions assessing religious attitudes and activities. From these questionnaires, a data set was compiled and I presented this research at the recent conference of the Society for Research on Child Development.

Media Consumption And Male Body Image, Catherine A. Larsen May 2003

Media Consumption And Male Body Image, Catherine A. Larsen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of our proposed research is to examine the relationship between media consumption and self-appraised body image in male college students. That is, does a correlation exist between the amount and type of media consumed (magazines in particular) and how males perceive their own body. Our hypothesis postulates that since magazines often portray unrealistic and "ideal" physiques, men that purchase and read body-oriented magazines will be have a more negative body image than those who do not.

Electronic Editing: A Case Study At The Mountain Plains Regional Resource Center, Leonora Tanner May 2003

Electronic Editing: A Case Study At The Mountain Plains Regional Resource Center, Leonora Tanner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Editors have always played an essential role in the document production process. That process has drastically changed with the introduction of technology like desktop computers and word processing programs such as Microsoft Word. However, the editing segment of the process has remained very much the same as it was 20 years ago because of a lack of knowledge about and reluctance to use the editing technologies that has been developed recently.

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Checklists And Performance Feedback On Study Skills Of College Students With Disabilities, Sherrie Mecham May 2003

The Effects Of Self-Monitoring Checklists And Performance Feedback On Study Skills Of College Students With Disabilities, Sherrie Mecham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study utilized a multiple baseline design across two study skills to examine the impact of a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback on the implementation of study skills for seven college students with disabilities. The accuracy with which students performed study skills was calculated as a percentage based on the number of correct study skill steps completed during a college course divided by the total number of treatment steps. The results show that three of the seven students markedly increased the accurate use of the notetaking and study guide skills immediately when provided with a self-monitoring checklist and performance feedback, …
