Misconstruals Or More? The Interactions Of Orbit Diagrams And Explanations Of The Seasons, Victor R. Lee Apr 2010

Misconstruals Or More? The Interactions Of Orbit Diagrams And Explanations Of The Seasons, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper examines a “misconstrual hypothesis” regarding diagrams of the Earth’s orbit around the sun and how middle school students explain the cause of the seasons. Drawing from 24 semi-structured interviews, I present qualitative analyses of students’ explanations of why temperatures vary in summer and winter and how those are influenced by the elliptical shape of perspective drawings of the Earth’s orbit, common to many science textbooks. The results of the analysis suggest that diagram interpretation does not necessarily follow what has been often predicted in the literature and that conceptualizations can shift quite rapidly as different diagram features are …

Invisible Abuse: Utah's Response To Emotional Child Abuse, Janae Sirrine Mar 2010

Invisible Abuse: Utah's Response To Emotional Child Abuse, Janae Sirrine

Browse All Undergraduate research

The very nature of emotional child abuse makes it difficult to detect and report. Nevertheless, scholars and professionals in the field of child welfare have identified emotional abuse as being equally detrimental to children as physical abuse and neglect. Many states, including Utah, have unclear definitions of emotional child abuse. The purpose of this study is to interpret how Utah has used its statute on emotional abuse in the court system and whether the current definition of emotional child abuse has given Utah’s courts enough information and direction to prosecute those who emotionally abuse children. Data were collected by researching …

Building A Learning Community And Authentic Assessment Into A Hybrid Course, Dennis B. Propst Mar 2010

Building A Learning Community And Authentic Assessment Into A Hybrid Course, Dennis B. Propst

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

A review of the literature on blended learning, called hybrid courses at the author’s university, reveals that such learning “can be as successful as either online or face to face instruction” (Vignare, 2007). Blended learning has been defined as 1. “Courses that integrate online with traditional face‐to‐face class activities in a planned, pedagogically valuable manner; and 2. Where a portion of face‐to‐face time is replaced by online activity” (Laster et al., 2005). Learning communities arise as people address recurring sets of problems together and engage with each other in a collective learning process. In a classroom setting, this process typically …

Teaching Environmental Communications Through Service Learning, Marc J. Stern Mar 2010

Teaching Environmental Communications Through Service Learning, Marc J. Stern

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

The presentation will reflect on the results of evaluations of a service learning course in environmental education in which students developed and delivered afterschool environmental education programs at local elementary schools. One strategy for a service‐learning course is basically to push the students off of a cliff, dangle a rope, and hope they can not only find the rope, but also climb back up. This generally means getting students out there as quickly as possible, equipping them with some basic tools and knowledge to make sense of their experience along the way, and seeing if they can put it all …

Student Reported Individual And Team Effectiveness In A Service Learning Capstone Course: Lessons From Five Cohorts, Brian Lee Mar 2010

Student Reported Individual And Team Effectiveness In A Service Learning Capstone Course: Lessons From Five Cohorts, Brian Lee

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Many students who enter a university setting have not necessarily been formally educated in how to engage learning as a functional team member. One of the skills employers continually say they highly value is the ability of an individual to contribute productively to teams. A requirement for an undergraduate degree in landscape architecture is completing a six‐credit hour capstone service‐ learning course. The course involves individual work that contributes to a team effort resulting in several products for a community sponsor. Typically, team members have attended classes and worked on class projects together prior to this course and are not …

Constructivist Approaches To Education: Fostering Student Construction Of Knowledge, Chloe Ruff, Jennifer Snyder, Britta Petrich Mar 2010

Constructivist Approaches To Education: Fostering Student Construction Of Knowledge, Chloe Ruff, Jennifer Snyder, Britta Petrich

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

For undergraduate college students in Virginia Tech’s Psychological Foundations of Education class, students are taught various learning theories. In this interactive practice session, presenters will highlight Constructivist Learning Theory and cover three main points of interest. First, presenters will discuss the foundational framework for constructivism by providing background and history on a few of the most influential scholars. In our second area of focus, we will compare and contrast the settings of the constructivist classroom to that of the traditional classroom. Presenters will define the specific roles and responsibilities of both the constructivist teacher and student. Our last main area …

“Read It Again, Sam”: Giving Repeated Reading A Purpose, Nolan Weil

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Readers’ Theater is an enjoyable and worthwhile activity in its own right. Moreover, the process of rehearsal in Readers’ Theater, by its very nature, entails repeated reading—a form of reading practice, which research has suggested has a positive effect on the development on reading fluency and ultimately on reading comprehension.

Chinese Women Developing Leadership: Case Studies In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen Feb 2010

Chinese Women Developing Leadership: Case Studies In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Organizational leaders in various sectors (public, private, and social) across the globe often acknowledge the importance of preparing both men and women for strong, competent leadership. To assist these organizations, researchers (e.g., Bass, 1990; Bennis, 1989) have been conducting leadership studies for decades in various disciplines (e.g., education, management, psychology) to better understand this complex phenomenon. Kowske and Anthony (2007), Ardichvili and Manderscheid (2008), and Madsen (2009) have also highlighted the importance of studying leadership development within the human resource development (HRD) arena in the U.S. and beyond. Yet, studies in these disciplines on developing women leaders are just emerging …

A fitness equipment salesperson sold more add-on merchandise and earned a higher commission when complimenting customers (47 men, 41 women) than when not complimenting them during telephone interactions. Compliments did not increase the sales of fitness equipment, however.

Sensitivity Of Wtp Estimates To Definition Of 'Yes': Reinterpreting Expressed Response Intensity, Mimako Kobayashi, Kimberly Rollins, M. D. R. Evans Feb 2010

Sensitivity Of Wtp Estimates To Definition Of 'Yes': Reinterpreting Expressed Response Intensity, Mimako Kobayashi, Kimberly Rollins, M. D. R. Evans

Articles

Willingness to pay (WTP) estimation typically involves some strategy for mapping nondichotomous contingent valuation (CV) responses onto a dichotomous yes/no dependent variable. We propose a new approach to selecting which responses qualify as ‘yes.’ We apply the proposed method to polychotomous CV data for preventative land management programs in the Great Basin. We also estimate WTP using other methods of response recoding found in the literature. By contrasting the results under different approaches, we demonstrate how and why WTP point estimates vary across recoding methods and discuss the comparative advantages of our more generalized recoding approach that is based on …
