The Nearctic Psammocharids Of The Genus Aporinellus Banks, Joseph Bequaert

On one of the collecting trips made this summer with Prof. William M. Wheeler, in the vicinity of Boston, I collected a little Psammocharid which has proved to be an undescribed species of Aporinellus. In comparing this specimen with Mr. Nathan Banks' extensive collection of Psammocharids I have found another undescribed member of the same genus. Descriptions of both forms are given herewith, together with a brief review of the group. I am much indebted to Mr. Nathan Banks, of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Mass., for the loan of rich material containing many types and for valuable bibliographic …

There are many orchards in this country, so located that every few years a frost almost completely destroys the crop, either by killing the buds in the spring of the year, or by freezing the fruit in the fall, just before it is picked. Utah is no exception. A report made by the county agricultural agents of the state, shows that in the spring of 1916, 85 percent of the apples, 90 percent of the peaches, and 65 percent of the mall fruit were killed by frost with a corresponding amount of damage to field crops.

The Bee Genus Holcopasites Ashmead, J. C. Crawford

This genus was established by Dr. Ashmead in Trans. Amer. Ent. Soc., vol. 26, p. 82, 1899, but no species was included. The material on which he based his description is in the U. S. National Museum and bears his manuscript name H. pratti. This, however, is the species described by Robertson as Philerenius illinoiensis, which species I select as the genotype. To this genus also belong Phileremus pulchellus Cresson, P. heliopsis Robert., and Neopasites robertsoni Cwfd. as well as the new species described below.

This paper discusses only species occurring in America north of Mexico and no table to separate the males has been included since Prof. T. D. A. Cockerell published a table for this sex in the Canadian Entomologist for June, 1912, pp. 167-170. The key to the females includes all the species for the region under consideration in which the female sex has been described. In the table here presented the characters used for separating rufitarsis Sm. from comstockii Cress. and lucrosa Cress. from moesta Cress. are the characters used by Prof. Cockerell in a table to separate the types of …

Many of the species herein described were received from the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture, having been reared by its various branches in economic investigations as parasites of injurious insects. In this connection attention is especially called to the interesting and varied series reared from Agromyza. In this paper, as in all previous papers published by me, the sex first described is to be taken as the true type and the second as the allotype.
