From Folletos To “Fake News”: The Origins Of The Political Fragmentation Of Media, Catherine Sundt

Decimonónica

In 2016, many high-profile elections were influenced not only by a rigid division of the electorate, but also by notable differences in the voters’ sources of news and information. After the United States presidential election, numerous post-mortem think-pieces blamed “social media bubbles” and “echo chambers” as a central threat to democracy.1 The social circles that people tend to inhabit, due to political, generational, and socio-economic divides, are reflected in their social media networks. Over time, these networks become echo chambers in which users select which sites provide their reading material and “hide” the friends and acquaintances who disagree with …

Conjecture Mapping The Library: Iterative Refinements Toward Supporting Maker Learning Activities In Small Community Spaces, Victor R. Lee, Mimi Recker, Abigail L. Phillips

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

A recent and important innovation in design-based research (DBR) is the use of conjecture maps, where researchers explicitly articulate the conjectured mediational relations between their designed goals and the learning designs and contexts. In this paper, we present a design case as an iterative sequence of evolving conjecture maps. As each conjecture map was tested, we revised it to highlight and refine our articulation of the tools and processes that embodied our design approach. Out design case involves small-town and rural community and school libraries in the United States as partners and DBR sites, with the goal of supporting librarians …

Human–Black Bear Conflicts: A Review Of Common Management Practices, Carl W. Lackey, Stewart W. Breck, Brian F. Wakeling, H. Bryant White Jan 2018

Human–Black Bear Conflicts: A Review Of Common Management Practices, Carl W. Lackey, Stewart W. Breck, Brian F. Wakeling, H. Bryant White

Human–Wildlife Interactions Monographs

The objective of this monograph is to provide wildlife professionals, who respond to human–bear conflicts, with an appraisal of the most common techniques used for mitigating conflicts as well as the benefits and challenges of each technique in a single document. Most human–black bear conflict occurs when people make anthropogenic foods like garbage, dog food, domestic poultry, or fruit trees available to bears. Bears change their behavior to take advantage of these resources and may damage property or cause public safety concerns in the process. Managers and the public need to understand the available tools to stop human–bear conflict and …

Personal Analytics Explorations To Support Youth Learning, Victor R. Lee Jan 2018

Personal Analytics Explorations To Support Youth Learning, Victor R. Lee

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

While personalized learning environments often include systems that automatically adapt to inferred learner needs, other forms of personalized learning exist. One form involves the use of personal analytics in which the learner obtains and analyzes data about himself/herself. More known in informatics communities, there is potential for use of personal analytics for design of instruction. This chapter provides two cases of personal analytics learning explorations to demonstrate their range and potential. One case is of a high school student examining how sleep influences her mood. The other case is of a sixth-grade class of students examining how deviations from typical …

Toward Sustainable Conservation And Management Of Human-Wildlife Interactions In The Mmadinare Region Of Botswana: Villagers’ Perceptions On Challenges And Prospects, Oitshepile M. Modise, Rebecca Nthogo Lekoko, Olekae Tsompi Thakadu, Masego Ayo Mpotokwane

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Human–wildlife conflicts are increasing globally. The increase in conflicts has been attributed to growing human and wildlife populations and a per capita increase in the consumption of natural resources. In Botswana, conflicts between humans and elephants (Loxodonta africana) are increasing. The growing human population (2.2 million) is encroaching on the animals’ already restricted range. Concomitantly, more elephants are adversely affecting arable agriculture production. To better understand the magnitude and intensity of human–wildlife interactions with elephants and other native wildlife species in Botswana, we collected data through community forum conducted July 17–18, 2017 at a “Kgotla” meeting in Mmadinare, a village …

Managing Human-Habituated Bears To Enhance Survival, Habitat Effectiveness, And Public Viewing, Kerry A. Gunther, Katharine R. Wilmot, Steven L. Cain, Travis C. Wyman, Eric G. Reinertson, Amanda M. Bramblett Jan 2018

Managing Human-Habituated Bears To Enhance Survival, Habitat Effectiveness, And Public Viewing, Kerry A. Gunther, Katharine R. Wilmot, Steven L. Cain, Travis C. Wyman, Eric G. Reinertson, Amanda M. Bramblett

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The negative impacts on bears (Ursus spp.) from human activities associated with roads and developments are well documented. These impacts include displacement of bears from high-quality foods and habitats, diminished habitat effectiveness, and reduced survival rates. Additionally, increased public visitations to national parks accompanied with benign encounters with bears along park roads have caused more bears to habituate to the presence of people. In some contexts, habituation can predispose bears to being exposed to and rewarded by anthropogenic foods, which can also lower survival rates. The managers and staff of Yellowstone National Park located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, …

Using Global Positioning System Technology To Manage Human-Black Bear Incidents At Yosemite National Park, Rachel L. Mazur, Ryan M. Leahy, Caitlin J. Lee-Roney, Kathleen E. Patrick Jan 2018

Using Global Positioning System Technology To Manage Human-Black Bear Incidents At Yosemite National Park, Rachel L. Mazur, Ryan M. Leahy, Caitlin J. Lee-Roney, Kathleen E. Patrick

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Managing human–bear (Ursus spp.) incidents is a top management priority in national parks inhabited by bears. Yosemite National Park (Yosemite), located in the Sierra Nevada in California, USA, receives up to 5 million visitors annually. It is also home to 300–500 black bears (U. americanus). Yosemite has an extensive history of black bear research, educational programs, and innovative solutions for reducing human–bear incidents. Despite this, human–bear incidents peaked in 1998 at 1,584. The resulting political fallout led to Yosemite receiving funds to expand its bear management program, including increasing its staffing and garbage pick-up, and improving the …

Black Bears Recolonizing Historic Ranges: Indiana Human–Bear Interactions, Bradford J. Westrich, Emily B. Mccallen, Geriann Albers Jan 2018

Black Bears Recolonizing Historic Ranges: Indiana Human–Bear Interactions, Bradford J. Westrich, Emily B. Mccallen, Geriann Albers

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Over a century after extirpation from Indiana, USA, 2 American black bears (Ursus americanus) were confirmed in the state during the summers of 2015 and 2016. The first bear encountered a public and management agency unaccustomed to living with large carnivores, which resulted in intentional and unintentional feedings, habituation, and ultimately its euthanasia. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) attempted to learn from this encounter and began preparing for the next transient black bear. Education materials were created to help minimize human–bear interactions, promote living safely with bears, and inform about what to do when encountering a …

Feral Horse Management In Parque Provincial Ernesto Tornquist, Argentina, Alberto L. Scorolli Jan 2018

Feral Horse Management In Parque Provincial Ernesto Tornquist, Argentina, Alberto L. Scorolli

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The number of feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) in the world has been estimated at 1.5–2 million, of which 5,000–10,000 occur in Argentina. Feral horses are considered an invasive alien species in Argentina, and as such, create a problem for biodiversity conservation. Only the population in Parque Provincial Ernesto Tornquist, Buenos Aires province, has been managed. In this paper, I discuss the conflicts between feral horse advocates, government authorities, and researchers that occurred after management actions were implemented and identify some factors that contributed to the conflict in positive and negative manners as well as some confusing concepts and ideas. …

Lessons Learned From A 20-Year Collaborative Study On American Black Bears, Jon P. Beckmann, Carl W. Lackey Jan 2018

Lessons Learned From A 20-Year Collaborative Study On American Black Bears, Jon P. Beckmann, Carl W. Lackey

Human–Wildlife Interactions

In the 1980s, black bears (Ursus americanus) began expanding into historic habitats in northwestern Nevada, USA. Over a period of >30 years, black bears recolonized areas where human populations have also increased. Our research represents one of, if not the longest-running and earliest comparative studies of a black bear population at wildland–urban interface and wildland areas in North America. As the population increased, we observed: 1) increasing human–bear conflicts in areas where several generations of people had lived in almost total absence of bears (70–80+ years); 2) changes in attitudes by the public toward bears and in the …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Global health disparities continue to widen as professional standards for effectiveness of mental health services provision become more precise and difficult to achieve across varied economic and social contexts. Within the U.S., health disparities are evident in Latinx populations. Globally, the health disparities are also evident in Latin America as compared to the U.S. and other economically affluent nations. The diversification of psychology in content and persons has led to a unique opportunity to build bridges that can help reduce disparities in- and outside of the U.S. mainland. Collaborations can be of great use in addressing health disparities internationally but …

This study examined the transdiagnostic effect of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) on impulsive decision making in a community sample. Forty adults were randomized to eight individual sessions of ACT or an inactive control. Participants completed pre-, mid-, and post-assessments for psychological symptoms, overall behavior change, valued living, delay discounting, psychological flexibility, and distress tolerance. Data were analyzed with multilevel modeling of growth curves. Significant interaction effects of time and condition were observed for psychological flexibility, distress tolerance, psychological symptoms, and the obstruction subscale of valued living. No significant interaction effect was found for two delay discounting tasks nor the …

Wordpress Plugins For Symbiota2, Venkatesh Kadali Jan 2018

Wordpress Plugins For Symbiota2, Venkatesh Kadali

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Symbiota is an open source project which helps biologists concentrate their efforts on curation of quality datasets rather than creating the tools. Symbiota’s graphical user interface is hardcoded into many PHP files resulting in poor maintainability and extensibility. The main goal of Symbiota is to separate the user interface of Symbiota with its core structure as the user interface is hard-coded with PHP. This helps in reducing the source lines of code. The secondary goal of Symbiota is to help Symbiota developers to add the Symbiota features to their website and also should identify whether the separation of user interface …

Data Use By Middle And Secondary Students In The Digital Age: A Status Report And Future Prospects, Victor R. Lee, Michelle H. Wilkerson

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

What it means to work with data has changed significantly since the preparation and publication of America’s Lab Report(Singer, Hilton, & Schweingruber, 2006)in ways that are impacting students, educators, and the very practice of science. This change is expressing itself most obviously in the abundance of data that can be collected and accessed by students and teachers. There are also notable changes in the types of data (e.g., GPS data, network data, qualitative/verbal data) that are now readily available, and the purposes for which data are collected and analyzed. These shifts have both generated enthusiasm and raised a number …

Twenty Years Of Spayvac® Research: Potential Implications For Regulating Feral Horse And Burro Populations In The United States, Ursula S. Bechert, Mark A. Fraker Jan 2018

Twenty Years Of Spayvac® Research: Potential Implications For Regulating Feral Horse And Burro Populations In The United States, Ursula S. Bechert, Mark A. Fraker

Human–Wildlife Interactions

There are currently >75,000 feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) and burros (E. asinus ) on U.S. public lands, yet the Appropriate Management Level (AML) is set at just under 27,000. Wildlife managers, conservation biologists, and livestock ranchers are concerned about the impacts that these free-ranging horses have on shared rangelands. Immunocontraceptive vaccines may have the greatest potential to regulate horse population numbers once AML is reached; however, the vaccine must have multi-year efficacy to be both technically feasible and cost-effective. Immunocontraception based on porcine zona pellucida (PZP)-specific antigens is highly tissue-specific, targeting the ova, and blocking sperm binding through antibody …

Fencing Alleviates Nuisance Molting Goose Problems In An Urban Park In Tennessee, Jonathan T. Mills, Daniel L. Combs Jan 2018

Fencing Alleviates Nuisance Molting Goose Problems In An Urban Park In Tennessee, Jonathan T. Mills, Daniel L. Combs

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Canada geese (Branta canadensis; geese) often congregate in high public use areas while molting during summer, resulting in increased nuisance complaints. We censused geese that inhabited a Cookeville city park in Tennessee, USA on a weekly basis from 2013-2014 to determine the magnitude, trends, and seasonal nature of problems caused by urban goose flocks. Fewer than 50 geese were counted in most months except during the molt, when numbers increased to over 200. Most geese dispersed from the park shortly after completion of the molt. Molt site fidelity to the park was estimated to be 51.5%, indicating that permanent …

Canid Vs. Canid: Insights Into Coyote-Dog Encounters From Social Media, Erin E. Boydston, Eric S. Abelson, Ari Kazanjian, Daniel T. Blumstein

Human–Wildlife Interactions

While the relationship between coyotes (Canis latrans) and house cats (Felis catus) may be characterized as one between predators and their prey, coyote interactions with domestic dogs (C. lupus familiaris) appear to be more varied and may include behaviors associated with canid sociality. While encounters between coyotes and dogs are difficult to observe, we capitalized on publically available video recordings of coyote-dog encounters to observe canid behaviors and examined 35 video clips downloaded from YouTube during fall 2014. We identified coyote-dog interactions that were playful, agonistic, or predatory; those that we could not clearly …
