Drag Augmentation Systems For Space Debris Mitigation, Zaria Serfontein, Jennifer Kingston, Stephen Hobbs, Ian Holbrough Aug 2020

Drag Augmentation Systems For Space Debris Mitigation, Zaria Serfontein, Jennifer Kingston, Stephen Hobbs, Ian Holbrough

Small Satellite Conference

Although advances in small satellite technologies has allowed for the development of large constellations and has made space more accessible to all, space debris is a growing concern within the space community. Every year, an increasing number of small satellites are launched, adding to the already high number of objects currently in low-Earth orbit. When considering the infinite possibilities of space mission architectures it is important not just to focus on the advancements in science and technology, but also to consider the sustainability of the spacecraft and its impact on its environment. If the challenge of space debris is not …

An Economic Comparison Of Two Leading Aquaponic Technologies Using Cost Benefit Analysis: The Coupled And Decoupled Systems, Grace M. Gibbons Aug 2020

An Economic Comparison Of Two Leading Aquaponic Technologies Using Cost Benefit Analysis: The Coupled And Decoupled Systems, Grace M. Gibbons

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Aquaponics is an agricultural production practice which combines aquaculture, the raising of fish, and hydroponics, a soil-less crop production method, to create a system that symbiotically produces both. Compared to conventional open-field agriculture, this practice is highly resource efficient in terms of water and land usage, but has yet to be widely adopted due to a lack of research regarding its economic feasibility. This study compares the two most economically promising aquaponic system designs to determine which would be more profitable at the intermediate-commercial scale. The first of these is the coupled system which continuously circulates water in a closed …

A Technical Evaluation Of Integrating Optical Inter-Satellite Links Into Proliferated Polar Leo Constellations, Joshua Ingersoll Aug 2020

A Technical Evaluation Of Integrating Optical Inter-Satellite Links Into Proliferated Polar Leo Constellations, Joshua Ingersoll

Small Satellite Conference

This study evaluates the technical requirements, benefits, and limitations of integrating optical inter-satellite links into a proliferated polar LEO constellation. When compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) links, optical links can transmit orders of magnitude more data at much lower powers in a far more secure method. However, these benefits come with stiff coarse and fine pointing requirements, complex thermal and vibrational satellite bus interfaces, as well as sensitivities to atmospheric conditions for LEO-ground connections. This study breaks optical inter-satellite links (OISL’s) into three distinct categories; in-plane, out-of-plane (crosslink), and LEO-ground. General commercial off the shelf (COTS) state of the …

Satcat5: A Low-Power, Mixed-Media Ethernet Network For Smallsats, Alexander Utter, Mark Zakrzewski, Andrew Keene, Samuel Dietrich, Sammy Lin, Eric Mcdonald, Nathan Whitehair, Jason Zheng Aug 2020

Satcat5: A Low-Power, Mixed-Media Ethernet Network For Smallsats, Alexander Utter, Mark Zakrzewski, Andrew Keene, Samuel Dietrich, Sammy Lin, Eric Mcdonald, Nathan Whitehair, Jason Zheng

Small Satellite Conference

In any satellite, internal bus and payload systems must exchange a variety of command, control, telemetry, and mission-data. In too many cases, the resulting network is an ad-hoc proliferation of complex, dissimilar protocols with incomplete system-to-system connectivity. While standards like CAN, MIL-STD-1553, and SpaceWire mitigate this problem, none can simultaneously solve the need for high throughput and low power consumption.

We present a new solution that uses Ethernet framing and addressing to unify a mixed-media network. Low-speed nodes (0.1-10 Mbps) use simple interfaces such as SPI and UART to communicate with extremely low power and minimal complexity. High-speed nodes use …

Cellular Based Aggregated Satellite System: The Design And Architecture Of A Three Degree Of Freedom Near-Frictionless Testbed For Ground Validation Of Cubesat Operations, Michael Smat, David Barnhart, Lizette Villafaña, Kirby Overman

Small Satellite Conference

As small and nano-satellite operations become more complex and increase in functionality, the need to validate new concepts prior to deployment in a low-cost and time efficient manner has further increased. While computer simulations have traditionally provided acceptable results for guidance navigation and control (GNC) algorithms, more complex actions such as rendezvous and proximity operations and docking (RPOD) require alternative methods, which often require ground-based platforms. The concept of on-orbit autonomous docking of small satellites has grown in popularity due to its broad range of applications. However, most existing ground testing platforms (GTP) are expensive due to the technologies used …

The Power Of Mercy: An Examination Of Presidential Pardon Patterns, Stewart Ulrich Aug 2020

The Power Of Mercy: An Examination Of Presidential Pardon Patterns, Stewart Ulrich

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Constitution gives the president the power of clemency, the ability to forgive crimes and release individuals from prison. There are no checks on this power, giving the president unilateral power. Are there any factors that constrain this power or affect it? I claim that the electoral manner in which a president comes into office helps determine how they will use the power. Presidents coming into power with enthusiasm and confidence of the people will issue more clemency, while those who come into power with less will have decreased levels of clemency. Additionally, with more media outlets to scrutinize their …

Evaluation Of Enrichment And Identification Media For Isolation Of Common Bovine Salmonella Serotypes, Katie Irene Swanson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Salmonellosis is an important cause of diarrhea in humans and animals, which can lead to death in severe cases. Rapid and efficient detection of Salmonella spp. is essential to limit the spread of disease. Many enrichment procedures have been described for the isolation of Salmonella, and often include variations on Rappaport-Vassiliadis medium, which is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The current procedures vary in incubation temperature, incubation time, and type of media used for identification of Salmonella. This project compared four procedures for enrichment and identification of common bovine Salmonella serotypes. We determined the best …

Cytomegalovirus Inhibition By Pluronic-Encapsulated Quercetin And Synergy With Ganciclovir, Ian Wadsworth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading viral cause of birth defects worldwide and leads to a variety of complications. Ganciclovir is the most common anti-CMV drug used but often causes severe side effects. Quercetin, a plant pigment, shows anti-CMV activity that may provide a less toxic alternative to ganciclovir, or when co-administered, reduce ganciclovir treatments. However, a drug carrier is needed to deliver quercetin for CMV treatment. In this study, three Pluronic polymers (P123, F127, and F68) were investigated as a quercetin drug delivery system (DDS) for CMV treatment.

All selected Pluronics successfully encapsulated quercetin at varying degrees of efficacy. …

Examining The Effects Of Aspects Of Resiliency And Vulnerability On The Relationship Between Experiencing Microaggressions And Mental Health Among Persons Of Color, Amanda K. Blume

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ethnic minorities experience discrimination frequently, especially a subtle form of discrimination called microaggressions-which are linked with poorer mental health. This study examined protective factors against microaggressions. In this study, responding to microaggressions actively (as opposed to ignoring the situation) was linked with better mental health. When use of active coping strategies was low, microaggressions were associated with lower self-esteem and higher depression and anxiety. Alternatively, when use of active coping styles was high, microaggressions were associated with higher self-esteem and less depression, anxiety, and drug use. Responding to microaggressions is a disengaged way (such as attempting to ignore or avoid …

Characterization Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cell Performance With Pentanoic Acid And N-Acetyl Cysteine Treatment, Joseph Camire Aug 2020

Characterization Of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cell Performance With Pentanoic Acid And N-Acetyl Cysteine Treatment, Joseph Camire

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To improve the cost of producing protein therapeutics manufacturers can attempt to increase the amount of protein produced per unit volume. Some small fatty-acids have shown the ability to increase protein concentrations in some manufacturing systems. An example system is in the industrially important cell line derived from a Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO). A drawback of adding these fatty-acids is they can increase the rate of cell death.

A potential way to minimize the cell death rate, caused by adding fatty-acids, is to also add additional anti-oxidants. Through a series of studies, we demonstrate production with different fatty-acids, butanoic acid …

Exploring The Connection Between Acid Exposure And Virulence In Listeria Monocytogenes, Minghao Li Aug 2020

Exploring The Connection Between Acid Exposure And Virulence In Listeria Monocytogenes, Minghao Li

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive food-borne pathogen that is widely dispersed in the environment and can cause listeriosis with high fatality rates when consumed in contaminated food products. They are capable of growing over a wide range condition. Listeria is also able to tolerate adverse conditions which allows the bacterium to survive in unfavorable environments. The ubiquitous nature of L. monocytogenes makes it difficult to eliminate from food systems. One major problem in the food industry is the survival of L. monocytogenes under sublethal low pH-environment since organic acids are widely used as food decontaminants. Prior research has suggested that …

Nanoparticles (NPs) are defined as particles less than 100 nm in at least one dimension. CuO NPs have possible applications in agriculture as micronutrient sources, pesticides, and enhancers of crop stress tolerance. Here, three aspects of CuO NP agricultural applications are studied: 1) the potential of CuO NPs to prevent wheat lodging-when crops irreversibly fall over; 2) CuO NP-induced drought tolerance in wheat seedlings; and 3) the effects of CuO NPs on outer membrane vesicle (OMV) production by Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 (PcO6), a plant-health promoting bacterium.

Wheat grown 7 d exposed to CuO NPs in the growth matrix …

A Stratospheric Approach To Diagnose The North American Winter Dipole, Henrik Panosyan Aug 2020

A Stratospheric Approach To Diagnose The North American Winter Dipole, Henrik Panosyan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been well established in the literature that the stratosphere is dynamically coupled with the troposphere during boreal winter. The North American Winter Dipole is comprised of an upper-tropospheric contrast between a ridge over western North America, and a trough over eastern North America. The variance of this circulation regime has increased in recent years, with its amplified states being associated with extremes ranging from drought and floods, to extreme cold air outbreaks. This study explores the stratospheric link to this extreme weather regime, in the hopes of ultimately improving the predictability of this regime on intraseasonal-to-seasonal timescales. We …

Communications, bandwidth, security, and hardware simplicity are principles of interest to society at large. Recent advances in optics and in understanding properties of light, such as orbital angular momentum (OAM), have provided new potential mediums for communication.

Machine learning has wound its way into a broad range of fascinating areas. An emerging field of research is the use of a unique property of lasers called orbital angular momentum (OAM). With the proper hardware, a laser can go from a Gaussian shaped distribution to a doughnut shaped pattern, where the radius can be changed. Multiple OAM patterns, or modes, can be …

Anti-State Criminal Violence As Civil Defense, Tyler S. Thomas Aug 2020

Anti-State Criminal Violence As Civil Defense, Tyler S. Thomas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Anti-state criminal violence is a puzzle. Criminal organizations should avoid violent interactions with the state, yet in several countries like Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia there has been widespread anti-state violence orchestrated by organized criminal groups for the past 25 years. Why?

Building on existing literature, I develop a theory with which to explain anti-state criminal violence. I argue that organized crime is more likely to commit anti-state violence when state enforcement agents commit a serious grievance against the local population with whom the criminals share a social identity. I develop this theory using the case of the Michoacán Family, later …

Cultural And Contextual Influences On Mental Health, Stigma, And Substance Use Among Mena U.S. College Students, Molly Mechammil

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The aim of this dissertation was to investigate whether certain cultural and contextual factors influence Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) college students' mental health, alcohol/marijuana use, and experiences with mental health stigma and help seeking. Research with MENA college students is very limited, which leaves mental health providers with limited information on how to best support MENAs. MENAs report high rates of discrimination, and other research shows that many they may use religion as a way to cope with stressors such as discrimination. I examined whether religious coping might buffer the effects of discrimination on mental health outcomes. I also considered …

Trisiloxane Surfactant Adjuvants In Pollen, Autumn Slade Aug 2020

Trisiloxane Surfactant Adjuvants In Pollen, Autumn Slade

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chemicals are often added to agricultural pesticide mixes to help increase the efficiency of the field spray solution, and one of the main groups of chemicals used for this purpose are trisiloxane surfactants (TSSs). Normally TSSs are considered non-toxic, but recent studies have shown TSSs to have negative impacts on organisms like honey bees. Though TSSs have recently been found in environmental sources like water, pollen, and beeswax, little is known about how TSSs behave in the environment or affects active ingredients, like pesticides.

To help determine the environmental prevalence and fate of TSSs, several studies were performed. Pollen was …

Effect Of Long Pasteurization Run Times On Bacterial Numbers In Milk, Brynli Tattersall Aug 2020

Effect Of Long Pasteurization Run Times On Bacterial Numbers In Milk, Brynli Tattersall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This project was funded by the Western Dairy Center to understand how long a milk pasteurizer can be operated before increases in bacterial numbers are observed in the pasteurized milk. While pasteurization kills pathogenic bacteria there are some non-pathogenic bacteria that can survive and have the ability to become attached to the surfaces in the cooling sections of the pasteurizer. Some bacteria can also produce spores that survive pasteurization even if the bacterial cells are killed. Temperatures in the cooling section remain in a range suitable for growth of these heat-tolerant bacteria and can allow germination of bacterial spores. While …

Thermal Management For High Power Cubesats, Boris Yendler, Ashton Meginnis, Adam Reif Aug 2020

Thermal Management For High Power Cubesats, Boris Yendler, Ashton Meginnis, Adam Reif

Small Satellite Conference

Thermal management systems for small satellites have traditionally been neglected entirely or only considered as an afterthought. This approach to small satellite systems design is no longer acceptable as technology has matured over the past decade and payload operational power has increased. Higher power leads to an increase in waste heat generated on-orbit. Trends in industry indicate that power demand for small satellite class (10-100 kg) can reach up to kilowatt range in the near future. A scalable Thermal Management System (TMS) has been developed which is applicable to small satellites ranging from CubeSats to ESPA class spacecraft. The TMS …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper examines the shifting portrayals of Pacific Islanders in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) across three generations. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. The WWE originally presented Pacific Islanders using the most offensive stereotypes, and the first two generations of the Samoan Dynasty had to “play Indian” or cosign onto gross representations of their …
