Rising Coastal Groundwater As A Result Of Sea-Level Rise Will Influence Contaminated Coastal Sites And Underground Infrastructure, K. Hill, D. Hirschfeld, C. Lindquist, F. Cook, S. Warner

Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Faculty Publications

Sea-level rise (SLR) will cause coastal groundwater to rise in many coastal urban environments. Inundation of contaminated soils by groundwater rise (GWR) will alter the physical, biological, and geochemical conditions that influence the fate and transport of existing contaminants. These transformed products can be more toxic and/or more mobile under future conditions driven by SLR and GWR. We reviewed the vulnerability of contaminated sites to GWR in a US national database and in a case comparison with the San Francisco Bay region to estimate the risk of rising groundwater to human and ecosystem health. The results show that 326 sites …

Sudden Oak Death And Ramorum Blight, Marion Murray, Ann Mull Sep 2023

Sudden Oak Death And Ramorum Blight, Marion Murray, Ann Mull

All Current Publications

Sudden oak death (SOD) and ramorum blight are caused by Phytophthora ramorum, a non-native water mold (oomycete) that originates from parts of Asia. Sudden oak death was given its name due to the appearance that entire trees were dying in just 2 to 4 weeks. In reality, the disease progresses over an extended period, estimated at more than 2 years after initial infection. Ramorum blight is nonlethal, typically causing foliar browning and wilting. This fact sheet discusses impact, damage and symptoms, plant hosts, disease cycle, and management.

Mrs. His Name: Reparative Description As A Tool For Cultural Sensitivity And Discoverability, Elspeth A. Olson Aug 2023

Mrs. His Name: Reparative Description As A Tool For Cultural Sensitivity And Discoverability, Elspeth A. Olson

Journal of Western Archives

Reparative description, a term coined by La’el Hughes-Watkins to describe the role of revising archival metadata in social justice, becomes a tool of both practical discoverability and cultural sensitivity toward the past when applied to the issue of married women’s names in legacy metadata in finding aids. The Mrs. His Name Project at the University of Nevada, Reno, represents a case study in balancing the practical with the ethical in identifying married women formerly identified solely by their husband’s names in finding aids. The project further suggests methodology which may be applied to other reparative description projects in archives, and …

How Teachers Conceptualise Shared Control With An Ai Co-Orchestration Tool: A Multiyear Teacher-Centred Design Process, Luettamae Lawrence, Vanessa Echeverria, Kexin Yang, Vincent Aleven, Nikol Rummel

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance teachers' capabilities by sharing control over different parts of learning activities. This is especially true for complex learning activities, such as dynamic learning transitions where students move between individual and collaborative learning in un-planned ways, as the need arises. Yet, few initiatives have emerged considering how shared responsibility between teachers and AI can support learning and how teachers' voices might be included to inform design decisions. The goal of our article is twofold. First, we describe a secondary analysis of our co-design process comprising six design methods to understand how teachers conceptualise sharing control with …

Commercial Data Relay Services In The Cis-Lunar Environment With Sstl’S Lunar Pathfinder, Ramy Kozman, Alex Da Silva Curiel Aug 2023

Commercial Data Relay Services In The Cis-Lunar Environment With Sstl’S Lunar Pathfinder, Ramy Kozman, Alex Da Silva Curiel

Small Satellite Conference

Many missions are planned for the lunar environment in the coming decades. Traditionally, all missions would receive telecommands direct-from-Earth and send payload data and telemetry direct-to-Earth. However, missions can benefit from reduced size, weight, power and costs and increased data rates if they forgo space-borne direct-to/from-Earth communications hardware and instead communicate with a nearby cis-lunar data relay orbiter.

Accordingly, SSTL has been working with the European Space Agency under the auspices of the Commercial Lunar Missions Support Services partnership agreement to provide Lunar communications and navigations services. This agreement will see SSTL design, build, test and operate the Lunar Pathfinder …

Cost-Effective Payload Operations Planning Software For Complex Small Spacecraft Mission Operations, Willard Farmer Aug 2023

Cost-Effective Payload Operations Planning Software For Complex Small Spacecraft Mission Operations, Willard Farmer

Small Satellite Conference

As small spacecraft become more capable, so does the complexity of their operations. Searching for potential concurrent observation or access opportunities and ensuring they are compatible with one another may become tedious and repetitive for operators to manually compute. Currently available commercial-off-the-shelf tools that automate this process are capable but expensive. To address this problem, a new payload operations planning tool has been developed by the Space Flight Laboratory to handle the deterministic aspects of mission planning, such as: detecting observation opportunities, validating observations in a schedule, and generating lists of commands to be sent to satellites. This lightweight tool …

Small Satellite Conference

Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities have seen an exponential increase in interest from academia and industry that can be a disruptive, transformative development for future missions. Specifically, AI/ML concepts for edge computing can be integrated into future missions for autonomous operation, constellation missions, and onboard data analysis. However, using commercial AI software frameworks onboard spacecraft is challenging because traditional radiation-hardened processors and common spacecraft processors cannot provide the necessary onboard processing capability to effectively deploy complex AI models. Advantageously, embedded AI microchips being developed for the mobile market demonstrate remarkable capability and follow similar size, weight, …

Applying An Aviation Analogy To Sustained Safe Space Operations, Ruth Stilwell, Darren Mcknight Aug 2023

Applying An Aviation Analogy To Sustained Safe Space Operations, Ruth Stilwell, Darren Mcknight

Small Satellite Conference

The current framework for aviation safety is a coherent series of airspace classes to partition air safety concerns. This methodology bases performance requirements on the capabilities and purposes of the air vehicles operating in a given volume of airspace in both an absolute sense and relative to other vehicles used in the same region. It is hypothesized that there may be some lessons learned to apply to space safety initiatives from this approach. Primarily, requiring more capable safety credentials for altitudes where resident missions are most critical, and effects of accidents are most consequential is proposed. The term “consequential” not …

A Reusable Framework For Fault Detection And Isolation In Small Satellites, Jubilee Prasad Rao, John Pace, Jesse Williams, Ryan Mackey, Liang He, Carlo Menegazzo Aug 2023

A Reusable Framework For Fault Detection And Isolation In Small Satellites, Jubilee Prasad Rao, John Pace, Jesse Williams, Ryan Mackey, Liang He, Carlo Menegazzo

Small Satellite Conference

Nearly half of all small satellites launched between 2000 and 2016 have experienced partial or complete failures. Detecting the anomalies and faults responsible for such failures and responding to them rapidly may help increase the success rates of future small satellite missions. However, developing and implementing platform-specific and comprehensive fault management solutions can be cost-prohibitive to most small satellite teams. To enable such teams to achieve this capability quickly and cost-efficiently, we have developed a reusable and fully data-driven framework and associated algorithms to detect and isolate anomalous behaviors. This work is supported by NASA and utilizes correlations between system …

University-Class Spacecraft In 2023: More Missions, More Problems?, Michael Swartwout

Small Satellite Conference

A "university-class" mission is one where the training of the students is as least as important as the in-orbit results from the spacecraft. Since the University of Melbourne's Australis OSCAR 5 launched in 1970, nearly 300 universities around the world have built & launched 720 university-class spacecraft. But, most of these events are recent: more than half of these schools had their first launch in the last five years. Coincidentally, 5 years ago is the last time that a paper like this was presented at the conference. And thus it's worth updating the previous work with all these new data …

Small Satellite Conference

Over the past few years, the space sector has witnessed a growing interest in exploring how biological organisms, such as Escherichia coli or Saccharomyces cerevisiae, respond to high radiation and microgravity environments. Among the various biological space missions, CubeSats, particularly SmallSats, have emerged as a popular platform for conducting such experiments owing to their reduced size and cost-effectiveness, which allows for the integration of miniaturized labs to study microorganisms onboard. However, the biggest challenge facing such missions is the preservation of living organisms for extended periods before the start of the experiments.

The UVigo SpaceLab team is currently developing a …

Control Of Small Spacecraft By Optimal Output Regulation: A Reinforcement Learning Approach, Joao Leonardo Silva Cotta, Omar Qasem, Paula Do Vale Pereira, Hector Gutierrez

Small Satellite Conference

The growing number of noncooperative flying objects has prompted interest in sample-return and space debris removal missions. Current solutions are both costly and largely dependent on specific object identification and capture methods. In this paper, a low-cost modular approach for control of a swarm flight of small satellites in rendezvous and capture missions is proposed by solving the optimal output regulation problem. By integrating the theories of tracking control, adaptive optimal control, and output regulation, the optimal control policy is designed as a feedback-feedforward controller to guarantee the asymptotic tracking of a class of reference input generated by the leader. …
