Proceedings Of The Fourth Western Black Bear Workshop, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service

Wildlife Conservation and Management

The status of black bears in North America ranges from pest to threatened. The species appears relatively secure throughout most parts of its range except the southeastern coastal plain; in this region a number of disjunct populations exist on primarily publicly owned lands. Concern over the status of Ursus americanus luteolus led to a petition to list this subspecies under the Endangered Species Act. The Endangered Species Act is arguably the most important wildlife legislation in recent years. However, applying this valuable, but young, untested, and evolving legislation to the black bear subspecies is judged unwarranted and premature because of …

Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy Of Biological Specimens, W. C. De Bruijn, C. W. J. Sorber, E. S. Gelsema, A. L. D. Beckers, J. F. Jongkind May 1993

Energy-Filtering Transmission Electron Microscopy Of Biological Specimens, W. C. De Bruijn, C. W. J. Sorber, E. S. Gelsema, A. L. D. Beckers, J. F. Jongkind

Scanning Microscopy

By energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) electrons can be separated by their energy losses. An electron-energy filter, added to the microscope column allows the measurement of the energy distribution of transmitted electrons that have lost energy (< 2,000 eV, with an energy resolution of ~ 1 eV). These filtered electrons, recorded either as a spectrum or as an image, are composed of two parts superimposed on top of each other: (a) the unspecific energy-loss population (= the continuum) and (b) the specific element-related energy-loss population (= the edges). At the edges, electron data in spectra and images are mathematically processed, to obtain the desired element-related net-intensity values or images. These data are related to the total transmitted electron intensity, from the zero-and low-loss spectral region giving the relative spectral-or image intensity ratios (SR*x, IR*x), which can be related to the element concentration. The acquisition of the zero-loss and low-loss data is hampered by the restricted dynamic range of the TV camera. By improvements through the introduction of calibrated attenuation filters in the optical path to the TV-camera, more reliable values for SR*x and IR*x can …

Modification Of The Eikonal Relation For Chemical Waves To Include Fluid Flow, J. W. Wilder, D. A. Vasquez, Boyd F. Edwards May 1993

Modification Of The Eikonal Relation For Chemical Waves To Include Fluid Flow, J. W. Wilder, D. A. Vasquez, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

Propagating wave fronts resulting from autocatalytic chemical reactions have been the focus of much recent research. For the most part, the hydrodynamics resulting from such reactions has been neglected. In this work, a relation is derived for the normal speed of a propagating wave front as a function of the local curvature when fluid motion is allowed. This ‘‘eikonal’’ equation is a generalization of one which was derived in the absence of fluid flow. It is also shown that small variations in the fluid density due to the chemical reaction do not change the form of the relation.

Growth And Water Relations Of Liquidambar Styraciflua L In An Urban Park And Plaza, Roger Kjelgren, James R. Clark

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Growth and water relations of 10-year-old sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) street trees were studied in sites with low and high potential evapotranspiration to determine how these differences are integrated by growth and water relations over time. The trees were located in the parking strip between the curb and sidewalk at a partially vegetated urban park and an urban plaza in Seattle, Washington. Crown size, and seasonal and diurnal stomatal conductance and water potential, as well as diurnal air temperature and humidity, were measured over 2 growing seasons. Yearly trunk growth since transplanting was measured from increment cores. Vapor pressure …

A Philosophical Investigation Of Sexual Jealousy And Jealousy In Shakespeare's Othello, Cymbeline, And The Winter's Tale, Greg P. Miner May 1993

A Philosophical Investigation Of Sexual Jealousy And Jealousy In Shakespeare's Othello, Cymbeline, And The Winter's Tale, Greg P. Miner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Many poets, social scientists, and philosophers have tried to understand, explain, and define jealousy. The methods employed in their pursuits are as varied as the different conclusions they have given. Three of the difficulties involved in the pursuit of jealousy are: the complex nature of jealousy, the significant role jealousy plays in interpersonal relationships, and the labyrinth encountered when trying to distinguish between jealousy and envy. The most common questions asked about jealousy are: What is jealousy? and, How can jealousy be helped? This paper will focus on the question: What is jealousy? Specifically, the following questions will be answered. …

A Mechanistic Approach To Modeling Habitat Needs Of Drift-Feeding Salmonids, R. Craig Addley May 1993

A Mechanistic Approach To Modeling Habitat Needs Of Drift-Feeding Salmonids, R. Craig Addley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A mechanistic model is developed to determine the habitat needs of drift-feeding stream salmonids from the direct cause-and-effect relationships of environmental and physiological variables on net energy intake (NEI). The model determines NEI by subtracting energy costs (basal metabolism, swimming cost, digestion cost) and losses (egestion and excretion) from the gross energy intake obtained as a result of simulated prey capture. The prey capture portion of the model utilizes components of the predation model of C.S. Holling and the prey capture model of N.F. Hughes and L.M. Dill to determine the rate of prey capture (gross energy intake) as a …

Postbreeding Ecology Of Adult Male Northern Pintails And Cinnamon Teal Near Great Salt Lake, Utah, Robert R. Cox Jr. May 1993

Postbreeding Ecology Of Adult Male Northern Pintails And Cinnamon Teal Near Great Salt Lake, Utah, Robert R. Cox Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

I studied nutrient reserves, digestive organs, molt intensity, diets, and seasonal changes in food resources available to postbreeding adult male Northern Pintails (Anas acuta) and Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) in marshes near Great Salt Lake, Utah. Total lipid and protein reserves of Northern Pintails were lower during the flightless period than before or after. For Cinnamon Teal, total protein was lowest during the flightless period, and total lipid showed a similar trend. Total mineral did not differ among plumage classes in either species. Use of nutrient reserves in these species may be an endogenous rhythm in …

A Comparison Of Models To Forecast Annual Average Potato Prices In Utah, Glade R. Erikson May 1993

A Comparison Of Models To Forecast Annual Average Potato Prices In Utah, Glade R. Erikson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Potatoes are a capital-intensive crop. A farmer who is considering expanding his potato acreage must carefully consider revenue requirements to offset the high costs of raising the crop. A method to forecast annual farm potato prices would be useful not only to the farmer, who is considering potato acreage expansion (or contraction), but also to the potato buyers.

Seven forecasting models were considered: (1) a simultaneous equation model (with five equations); (2) a Box-Jenkins type ARIMA model; (3) an exponential smoothing model; (4) a moving-average model; (5) a trend model; (6) an "opposite" model; and (7) a current, or naive, …

Anaerobic Treatment Of Whey Permeate Using Upflow Sludge Blanket Bioreactors, Seokhwan Hwang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Whey permeate was anaerobically digested in laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors. Nine hydraulic retention times between 5 and 0.2 days were examined with a fixed influent concentration of 10.6 ± 0.2 g COD/L.

Chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency ranged from 99.0 to 18.9% and maximum production rate of methane gas was 2.67 L/L/day at a hydraulic loading rate of 12.97 kg COD/m3/day. About 70% of the chemical oxygen demand removed was converted to methane.

Both the nonlinear least square method with 95% confidence interval and linear regression were used to evaluate kinetic coefficients. The maximum substrate …

Can Duration -- Interest Rate Risk -- And Convexity Explain The Fractional Price Change And Market Risk Of Equities?, David L. Cheney May 1993

Can Duration -- Interest Rate Risk -- And Convexity Explain The Fractional Price Change And Market Risk Of Equities?, David L. Cheney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the last two decades, duration analysis has been largely applied to fixed-income securities. However, since rising and falling interest rates have been determined to be a major cause of stock price movements, equity duration has received a great deal of attention.

The duration of an equity is a measure of its interest rate risk. Duration is the sensitivity of the price of an equity with respect to the interest rate. Convexity is the sensitivity of duration with respect to the interest rate.

The analysis revealed that the fractional price change and market risk of equities can be explained by …

Integration Of Short-Run Exchange Rate Dynamics With Long-Run Equilibrium: An Empirical Analysis, Sugata Biswas May 1993

Integration Of Short-Run Exchange Rate Dynamics With Long-Run Equilibrium: An Empirical Analysis, Sugata Biswas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigates the linkage between long-run and short-run dynamics of exchange rate determination for the German mark/U.S. dollar quarterly rate for the period 1973-1990. Earlier investigations failed to explicitly take into account the possible nonstationarity of the data set they were using. This study continues the work performed in this area by applying modern econometric techniques to empirical tests of the Dornbusch model. In essence, this study revives the monetary model and determines if the empirical analysis using the German/U.S. case derives elements which are compatible with the monetary theory of exchange rate determination.

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton May 1993

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gregarious behavior of ungulates was considered in four ways. The first concern was W. D. Hamilton's hypothesis that a simple movement rule could reduce predation risk and encourage grouping behavior. Simulations showed little effect of this nearest-neighbor rule on predation risk. Similar, more complicated rules reduced predation risk by up to two thirds.

The second focus was on the accuracy of ground observers in diagramming individual animal locations in small herds of elk. A remotely controlled airplane was used to photograph the herds from above. A substantial distance discrepancy was found between "true" and "observed" animal locations. This discrepancy increased …

Properties Of Rigid Foams For Application As Materials For Light Weight Structures In Space, Huichen Chi May 1993

Properties Of Rigid Foams For Application As Materials For Light Weight Structures In Space, Huichen Chi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mechanical and mesoscopic structural properties of rigid cellular foam made of polystyrene have been investigated. Basic properties (e.g., density, total and available porosity, permeability, surface area, isotropicity, and cell size and cell wall thickness distributions) were measured. In most cases, alternative methods were used to determine which methods were most appropriate for the type of samples we studied. Standard compression and deflection mechanical tests were performed. The stress-strain curves and related mechanical properties were found to agree with standard cellular structural models of open-cell foams.

We investigated the effects of small (~ < 5 atm) hydrostatic stress applied to foam samples for long periods of time (~one day). We observed large changes (up to a factor of three) in the stress-strain diagrams, Young's modulus, elastic collapse stress, ultimate strength, resilience, Poisson's ratio, permeability, penetration depth, and available porosity. Effects were most pronounced above 2 atm applied pressure differential, but were observed even for 1 atm loads. Short-term exposure to loads up to ten times as large did not cause comparable changes. These changes were interpreted as resulting from observed changes in the mesoscopic structure occurring near the surface using standard cellular structural models.

This work was originally motivated by applications …

Internal Deformation, Evolution, And Fluid Flow In Basement-Involved Thrust Faults, Northwestern Wyoming, James V. Goddard May 1993

Internal Deformation, Evolution, And Fluid Flow In Basement-Involved Thrust Faults, Northwestern Wyoming, James V. Goddard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An integrated field, microstructure, fracture statistic , geochemistry, and laboratory permeability study of the East Fork and White Rock fault zones, of similar age and tectonic regime but different structural level and hydrogeologic history, provides detailed information about the internal deformation and fluid flow processes in fault zones. The primary conclusions of this research are: 1) Fault zones can be separated into subzones of protolith, damaged zone , and gouge /cataclasite, based on physical morphology and permeability structure. At deep structural levels, gouge/cataclasite zones are more evolved (thicker with increased grain size reduction) due to strain localization, higher pressure and …

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren May 1993

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sixteeen sets of original laboratory data collected by many investigators for various Cutthroat flume sizes are thoroughly reviewed and organized. Best-fit discharge parameters are obtained by performing the free-flow analysis and the submerged-flow analysis. Then, the transition submergence can be calculated. Afterwards, the unified free-flow and submerged-flow discharge parameters are developed for each flume size in order to generalize the calibrations for Cutthroat flumes. This is a very tedious process requiring a trial-and-error approach. Finally, comparisons are made of the measured laboratory discharges with the predicted discharges for both free flow and submerged flow using both the best-fit and the …

Climatic Variability And Dynamics Of Great Salt Lake Hydrology, Taiye B. Sangoyomi May 1993

Climatic Variability And Dynamics Of Great Salt Lake Hydrology, Taiye B. Sangoyomi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The time evolution of the Great Salt Lake hydro-climatic system is studied from the perspective of nonlinear dynamics. The dynamics are reconstructed in phase space using the Great Salt Lake volume time series. Important attributes for describing the system are then obtained from the reconstructed space. These include the minimum number of state variables required to describe the system inferred from a determination of the intrinsic dimension, and characterization of the system in terms of linear/nonlinear, and deterministic/stochastic. Other attributes obtained are the dominant modes of behavior of the system, as well as the limit of predictability or information loss, …

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders May 1993

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The present investigation examined the current water demand characteristics and the future water demand of Cache Valley, Utah for the time period of 1990-2010. The demand attributable to agriculture and seven nonagricultural economics sectors was determined and forecasts were performed based on those demand values.

Linear regression, extrapolation, and alternative futures forecasting methods were applied and the various results compared against each other. Three different scenarios were calculated for residential demand to represent different sources and composition of demand information. It was determined that consideration of water demand data excluding Logan City provided the best statistical description of water demand. …

Morphological And Histochemical Changes In Intercellular Junctional Complexes In Epithelial Cells Of Mouse Small Intestine Upon X-Irradiation: Changes Of Ruthenium Red Permeability And Calcium Content, Z. Somosy, J. Kovács, L. Siklós, G. J. Köteles Apr 1993

Morphological And Histochemical Changes In Intercellular Junctional Complexes In Epithelial Cells Of Mouse Small Intestine Upon X-Irradiation: Changes Of Ruthenium Red Permeability And Calcium Content, Z. Somosy, J. Kovács, L. Siklós, G. J. Köteles

Scanning Microscopy

Changes of calcium-content and permeability of tight junction following X-irradiation were investigated in mouse intestinal epithelial cells by electron microscopy. In the control animals the lower parts of tight junctional area as well as the other junctional elements and the intercellular space are labeled by pyroantimonate precipitates, which contain calcium as revealed by electron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectrometry. X-irradiation, parallel with morphological changes, lead to rapid decrease of pyroantimonate precipitable calcium content and increase of the permeability of tight junctions indicated by the penetration of ruthenium red into the intercellular space. These changes were readily reversible following 0,5 …

The Petrochem/EkoTek site was operated by several owners as a refinery from 1953 until 1978 and as a hazardous waste storage treatment facility and a petroleum recycling facility from 1978 through 1988. Removal of essentially all petroleum products and hazardous wastes in tanks and drums was accomplished from 1988 - 1991. The process that will lead to the complete clean-up of the facility is ongoing. The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1992. Exposure of humans to contaminants in soil and air is thought to have occurred near Petrochem. The source(s) of those contaminants in …

Evidence Of Preferential Directions For Gravity Wave Propagation Due To Wind Filtering In The Middle Atmosphere, Michael J. Taylor, E. H. Ryan, T. F. Tuan, R. Edwards Apr 1993

Evidence Of Preferential Directions For Gravity Wave Propagation Due To Wind Filtering In The Middle Atmosphere, Michael J. Taylor, E. H. Ryan, T. F. Tuan, R. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

All-sky TV images of wave structure in the near-infrared hydroxyl (OH) nightglow emission were recorded over a 3-month period during May, June, and July 1988 from a high-altitude site at the Mountain Research Station (40.0° N, 105.6° W, 3050 m), near Nederland, Colorado. Well-defined, coherent wave patterns associated with the passage of short period (<1 hour) gravity waves were observed on a total of 22 occasions. The wave motions exhibited similar spatial and temporal properties during each month but a distinct tendency for northward propagation (68% of the wave azimuths within ± 40.0° N), with some eastward motion in May and June, was observed throughout the campaign. Although it is theoretically well known that upward propagating gravity waves can be blocked at a critical layer produced by the interaction of the waves with the horizontal background wind, observational evidence of this phenomenon is rare. To investigate the possibility that the asymmetry in the wave propagation directions was caused by the critical layer, a model based on mean climatological background winds and numerical tidal wave modes valid for any mid-latitude site and time of the year was constructed to show the regions forbidden to upward gravity wave propagation from critical layer theory. These “blocking diagrams” which vary with height and time were constructed for the OH altitude (∼87 km) for the present paper. Comparison of the predicted (i.e., least restricted) and the observed directions of the wave motion show almost complete agreement. This suggests that middle atmospheric winds can play an important role in determining the flux and the azimuthal distribution of short-period waves reaching the upper atmosphere.

Comparative Analysis Of Syntactic Abilities Of Hard-Of-Hearing And Deaf Children, As Measured By The Screening Portion Of The Test Of Syntactic Abilities, Dawn Misenhimer Apr 1993

Comparative Analysis Of Syntactic Abilities Of Hard-Of-Hearing And Deaf Children, As Measured By The Screening Portion Of The Test Of Syntactic Abilities, Dawn Misenhimer

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

According to the authors of the Test of Syntactic Abilities (TSA), the most difficult task facing deaf and hard-of-hearing children in our educational system is the acquisition of English. The structure, or syntax, of the English language, is especially challenging for these children. The eventual result is that few deaf and hard-of-hearing students acquire even an adequate knowledge of standard English. This in turn affects all other aspects of education, including the learning of reading, writing and content subjects (Quigley, Steinkamp, Power & Jones, 1978). Most deaf and hard-of-hearing children do not even use English syntax to any great extent …

Ta(110) Surface And Subsurface Core-Level Shifts And 4f7/2 Lineshapes, D. Mark Riffe, G. K. Wertheim Mar 1993

Ta(110) Surface And Subsurface Core-Level Shifts And 4f7/2 Lineshapes, D. Mark Riffe, G. K. Wertheim

All Physics Faculty Publications

High-resolution 4f core-level spectra of the Ta(110) surface region have been obtained at 80 and 300 K with 70- and 100-eV synchrotron radiation. The data show that the subsurface core-level binding-energy shift (compared to deeper-lying atoms) for a close-packed bcc(110) surface can be substantial: 65±15 meV for the first underlayer atoms of Ta(110). The surface core-level shift is 360±12 meV at 80 K and decreases by 13±2 meV at 300 K. Final-state screening in both the bulk and surface layers is well described by a constant singularity index of 0.133±0.012. An enhanced phonon broadening at the surface corresponds to a …

Evaluation Of The Surface Roughness Of Cystine Stones Using A Visible Laser Diode Scattering Approach, R. Thibert, B. Dubuc, M. Dofour, R. Tawashi Feb 1993

Evaluation Of The Surface Roughness Of Cystine Stones Using A Visible Laser Diode Scattering Approach, R. Thibert, B. Dubuc, M. Dofour, R. Tawashi

Scanning Microscopy

To understand the processes of fragmentation and the chemical reactivity of solids, proper characterization of surface topography is crucial. This paper describes a non-destructive technique of quantifying the surface roughness of cystine renal stones, using visible laser diode scattering and fractal geometry. Fragments of cystine stones were mounted on microscope slides and coated by a carbon-sputtering apparatus. The slides were placed under a dynamic active-vision system, using a visible laser diode to measure three-dimensional surface coordinates. The data obtained were analyzed by fractal geometry. Surface fractal dimensions were determined by the variation method. The results showed that the surface of …
