Scour Geometry And Dune Formation Characteristics Around Customized Structure In Channels, Rajib Das, Subhasish Das, Michele Palermo, Deep Roy, Simone Pagliara
Scour Geometry And Dune Formation Characteristics Around Customized Structure In Channels, Rajib Das, Subhasish Das, Michele Palermo, Deep Roy, Simone Pagliara
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
In this study, an attempt is made to verify the scour geometry and location of the dunes at a channel downstream where various structures are used as flow barriers. Various structures such as a square structure with a vane attached to one side, a rhombus and two similar structures positioning eccentrically, are used to examine scour geometry and dune formation. Overall, six Clearwater tests are performed, three of which are of single structures and three are a combination of two similar structures. All tests are performed keeping approach flow depth, discharge and bed material fixed. The main focus of the …

Numerical Simulation Of Air Entrainment In Stepped Spillways, F. Zabaleta, S. Márquez Damián, F. A. Bombardelli
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Existing methods to simulate air entrainment in stepped spillways are based on a sub-grid air-entrainment function that accounts for the incorporation of air through the air-water interface; a transport equation for the bubbly phase is then solved inside the water domain. Unfortunately, these techniques are unable to represent bulking, i.e., the increase in water depths after the inception point. In this work, we introduce a novel method for the simulation of flow in stepped spillways (including the aerated region). The new air-entrainment model is implemented in the OpenFOAM platform and couples an air-concentration-transport equation with the traditional Volume-of-Fluid (VoF) method …

Numerical Modeling For Optimization Of The Aspect Ratio Of Submerged Vanes For The Purpose Of Sediment Deflection In Rivers, V. Chauhan, R. Chavan, G. D. Singhal
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
In order to create a secondary circulation (spiral flow) in the downstream direction to their trailing edge, submerged vanes are tiny aspect ratio (H/L) devices that are positioned vertically on riverbeds. Since this secondary circulation is driven by the vane-induced tip vortex, submerged vanes are best recognized for changing the alluvial river-bed profile. Finding the right aspect ratio as a function of the angle of attack with the approach flow is one of the current issues with using the submerged vane technique. In this context, the current study aims to investigate the best vane length to be used, based on …
Porous Concrete Slabs Underlain By Polypropylene Fabric For Restoration Of Beaches, N. N. Pillai, M. L. Kansal, R. Ramkrishnan
Porous Concrete Slabs Underlain By Polypropylene Fabric For Restoration Of Beaches, N. N. Pillai, M. L. Kansal, R. Ramkrishnan
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Beaches in India and elsewhere are getting destroyed at an alarming rate as many small ports are being built and sea walls are coming up on the banks. There is an urgent need to stop it. In 1966, Posey used cylinders of net filled with rock (called rock sausages) underlain by a reverse gravel filter for safety against scour in hydraulic structures. Pillai used a bed of stones enclosed in nets underlain by a reverse filter to allow overflow over a sand embankment. Later it was understood that a Polypropylene Fabric (P.F.) could be effective as a filter, and a …
Designing Smooth Mixed-Geometry Canal Transition, D. C. Froehlich
Designing Smooth Mixed-Geometry Canal Transition, D. C. Froehlich
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
When a canal’s size or shape changes, usually over a short distance, a section of the channel, known as a transition structure, is needed to connect the waterway’s two stretches. Fifth-degree parametric equations are developed to calculate the cross-section dimensions and bed centerline elevations (thus, the geometric surface coordinates) between the two ends of a warped transition structure in a water-supply canal. The parametric modeling approach provides a smooth representation of the mixed geometry that results from terminal sections having vastly different shapes. A generalized cross-section defined by four parameters enables a straightforward model of various forms ranging from trapezoids …
Stilling Basins Using Wedge-Shaped Baffle Blocks, N. N. Pillai, M. L. Kansal
Stilling Basins Using Wedge-Shaped Baffle Blocks, N. N. Pillai, M. L. Kansal
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
The United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) extensively studied hydraulic jump-type stilling basins for various inflow and tailwater conditions. They recommend Basin III using chute blocks, rectangular baffle blocks, and sloping end sill for medium to high dams. However, a significant contribution to the knowledge regarding the production of turbulence in discontinuity layers, the dissipation of energy, the convection, and the decay of turbulence in hydraulic jump was made by subsequent researchers. However, while developing the stilling basin, the wake formed by the jets separating at the front corners of the rectangular baffle blocks in Basin III and reattaching the …
Prediction Of Discharge Coefficient Of Circular Side Orifice Through Machine Learning Technique, Syed Ahmed Noman, Ajmal Hussain, Mohd. Danish, Rashid Ali
Prediction Of Discharge Coefficient Of Circular Side Orifice Through Machine Learning Technique, Syed Ahmed Noman, Ajmal Hussain, Mohd. Danish, Rashid Ali
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
A sharp-crested circular side orifice is a crucial element when it comes to diverting flow from primary source to its subordinate source. Such a flow measurement instrument technique is of immense value in conservation and evaluation of drainage and irrigation networks. Usually, it is placed towards the side of a channel in order to regulate the flow of the fluid. Traditionally, coefficient of discharge was predicted through regression methods which are time-consuming and lack accuracy. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in this domain have bridged this gap by providing novel alternative methods which prove much more efficient. Repeated studies …

International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Block ramps are ecofriendly drop structures, which ensure stable downstream river bed, peculiar to flows over macro roughness elements. It uniquely serves an essential paradigm in riverine management, to encounter deliveries in an ecologically sound manner. It permits safe fish passage, stabilizes stream banks and bed profiles and creates habitat diversity. Study of flows over block ramps are quite extensive and are associated with many intricacies. In this paper, flume experiments were conducted in the hydraulic laboratory of National Institute of Technology Patna. The particle densimetric Froude number (F*) was calculated for the mobile bed and chosen to predict the …
Physical And Numerical Model Studies For Hydraulic Design Of Stilling Basin As An Energy Dissipator Of A Spillway - A Case Study, B. S. Sundarlal, Vaishali Gadhe, S. R. Patnaik, Amol H. Gaikwad
Physical And Numerical Model Studies For Hydraulic Design Of Stilling Basin As An Energy Dissipator Of A Spillway - A Case Study, B. S. Sundarlal, Vaishali Gadhe, S. R. Patnaik, Amol H. Gaikwad
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
The design of the stilling basin for a dam spillway is site specific and hydraulic model studies are required to be carried out for evolving the best possible design. A properly designed hydraulic jump stilling basin can ensure 60-70% dissipation of energy in the basin itself. Supported by hydraulic model studies and prototype experience, a suitable stilling basin caters to a variety of conditions covering discharge intensity, head, tail water variation, and topographical conditions. The most serious problem with hydraulic jump type dissipator is more structural strength rather than hydraulic efficiency. Experience in recent years gives many examples of stilling …
Hydraulic Behavior Of Spill Channel Of Polavaram Dam Spillway Without Left Embankment, Vankayalapati S. Ramarao, Yogendra Nath Srivastava
Hydraulic Behavior Of Spill Channel Of Polavaram Dam Spillway Without Left Embankment, Vankayalapati S. Ramarao, Yogendra Nath Srivastava
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
Spill channel is a flood disposing channel excavated on the downstream of spillway which joins the main river course. The purpose of spill channel is to divert the spillway released flood safely to the downstream river course. The alignment of the spill channel may be straight of curved or partially straight and partially curved. It may be in steep gradient or in flat gradient and subjected to supercritical flows or subcritical flows. While disposing of the flood, the flow conditions in the spill channel would be straight without cross waves. Water surface profiles in the convex and concave banks of …

Symplectic Reduction Along A Submanifold, Peter Crooks, Maxence Mayrand
Symplectic Reduction Along A Submanifold, Peter Crooks, Maxence Mayrand
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
We introduce the process of symplectic reduction along a submanifold as a uniform approach to taking quotients in symplectic geometry. This construction holds in the categories of smooth manifolds, complex analytic spaces, and complex algebraic varieties, and has an interpretation in terms of derived stacks in shifted symplectic geometry. It also encompasses Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer reduction, Mikami-Weinstein reduction, the pre-images of Poisson transversals under moment maps, symplectic cutting, symplectic implosion, and the Ginzburg-Kazhdan construction of Moore-Tachikawa varieties in topological quantum field theory. A key feature of our construction is a concrete and systematic association of a Hamiltonian G-space 𝔐𝐺,𝑆 to …

Pausing While Programming: Insights From Keystroke Analysis, Raj Shrestha, Juho Leinonen, Albina Zavgorodniaia, Arto Hellas, John M. Edwards
Computer Science Student Research
Pauses in typing are generally considered to indicate cognitive processing and so are of interest in educational contexts. While much prior work has looked at typing behavior of Computer Science students, this paper presents results of a study specifically on the pausing behavior of students in Introductory Computer Programming. We investigate the frequency of pauses of different lengths, what last actions students take before pausing, and whether there is a correlation between pause length and performance in the course. We find evidence that frequency of pauses of all lengths is negatively correlated with performance, and that, while some keystrokes initiate …

Predicting Stochastic Lightning Mechanical Damage Effects On Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites, Juhyeong Lee, Syed Zulfiqar Hussain Shah
Predicting Stochastic Lightning Mechanical Damage Effects On Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites, Juhyeong Lee, Syed Zulfiqar Hussain Shah
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Three stochastic air blast models are developed with spatially varying elastic properties and failure strengths for predicting lightning mechanical damage to AS4/3506 carbon/epoxy composites subjected to < 100 kA peak currents: (1) the conventional weapon effects program (CWP) model, (2) the coupled eulerianlagrangian (CEL) model, and (3) the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model. This work is an extension of our previous studies [1–4] that used deterministic air blast models for lightning mechanical damage prediction. Stochastic variations in composite material properties were generated using the Box-Muller transformation algorithm with the mean (i.e., room temperature experimental data) and their standard deviations (i.e., 10% of the mean herein as reference). The predicted dynamic responses and corresponding damage initiation prediction for composites under equivalent air blast loading were comparable for the deterministic and stochastic models. Overall, the domains with displacement, von-Mises stress, and damage initiation contours predicted in the stochastic models were somewhat sporadic and asymmetric along the fiber’s local orientation and varied intermittently. This suggests the significance of local property variations in lightning mechanical damage prediction. Thus, stochastic air blast models may provide a more accurate lightning mechanical damage approximation than traditional (deterministic) air blast models. All stochastic models proposed in this work demonstrated satisfactory accuracy compared to the baseline models, but required substantial computational time due to the random material model generation/assignment process, which needs to be optimized in future work.

An Assessment Of The Location Of The Bears Ears National Monument Cultural Center, Jordan W. Smith, Eunjung Yang, Anna B. Miller
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
A cultural center at Bears Ears National Monument, if well planned, could serve as an anchor destination through which visitors could learn about, experience, and appreciate the cultures, histories, and landscapes that define southeastern Utah. A cultural center also holds the potential to bolster the regional economy, by signaling a long-term investment in the sustainability of the region’s outdoor recreation and tourism industry. Our intent with this analysis is to establish a foundational understanding of potential locations for a cultural center. We develop and analyze a set of cultural, environmental, and economic metrics that can be used to shape ongoing …

Leveraging The "Large" In Large Lecture Statistics Classes, Kady Schneiter, Kimberleigh Felix Hadfield, Jenny Lee Clements
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
Being a teacher or a student in a class with a large enrollment can be intimidating. Often, teachers view comforts that are common to small classes as unattainable in a larger class, including knowing students’ names, using active learning, employing group work, and creating group discussion. Students in large classes may find that the class size leads to isolation. At Utah State University, we offer introductory statistics classes for various audiences using a large lecture format. The authors have collectively led these large lectures dozens of times and found that, despite its shortcomings, the large lecture format can be an …
Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesat Radiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy
Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesat Radiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
“Adaptive Calibration of CubeSat Radiometer Constellations” (ACCURACy) is a novel, constellation-level calibration framework developed to address the challenges in calibrating constellations of CubeSat radiometers. CubeSats are smaller than conventional monolithic systems, and so while cheaper and easier to develop and deploy, a lack of sufficient radiation shielding and thermal mass results in gain fluctuations due to the increased sensitivity to ambient conditions. Weight, cost, and power requirements also mean that CubeSats need to rely on vicarious calibration measurements, rather than external blackbody references, which cannot be collected frequently. ACCURACy is a multi-module framework which uses onboard telemetry data to cluster …

Mammals have displayed spectacular evolutionary success ever since an asteroid impact caused the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event ~66 million years ago, when the non-avian dinosaurs disappeared. Now another mass extinction event is underway because of another major planetary disturbance, but this time it is directly caused by just one over-achieving species among all those mammals: Homo sapiens.

Past research has yielded ample knowledge regarding the design of analytics-based tools for teachers and has found beneficial effects of several tools on teaching and learning. Yet there is relatively little knowledge regarding the design of tools that support teachers when a class of students uses AI-based tutoring software for self-paced learning. To address this challenge, we conducted design-based research with 20 middle school teachers to create a novel real-time dashboard, Tutti, that helps a teacher monitor a class and decide which individual students to help, based on analytics from students’ tutoring software. Tutti is fully implemented and has been …
A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan
A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
A Practicum in Behavioral Economics is a practice-based textbook covering the broad field of behavioral economics. Because behavioral economics is foremost a "test-and-learn" field of scientific inquiry that evolves according to experimental outcomes, so too should students test-and-learn. As such, the book's primary goal is to help students experience behavioral economics through participation in the same experiments and games that serve as the foundations for, and shape the contours of, the field. With the help of this book students learn behavioral economics firsthand, and in the process create their own experiences. They learn about themselves - about how they make …
Pulsed Electroacoustic Measurements Of Polymers Irradiated With Low Energy Monoenergetic Electrons, Zachary Gibson, Jr Dennison
Pulsed Electroacoustic Measurements Of Polymers Irradiated With Low Energy Monoenergetic Electrons, Zachary Gibson, Jr Dennison
Physics Student Research
Understanding the dynamics and accumulation of embedded charge in dielectric materials is paramount for many applications from HVDC power transmission to spacecraft charging. The pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method allows for nondestructive measurements of embedded charge distributions in dielectrics. The spatial resolution of PEA measurements are typically ~10 μm. However, some of the most deleterious spacecraft charging events result from electron fluxes with 10 keV to 50 keV energies, resulting in electron ranges of 1's to 10's of μm. Due to the resolution of the PEA method and the superposition of the interfacial charge with the deposited charge distribution, it is …

Including sea-level rise (SLR) projections in coastal adaptation is increasingly recognized as crucial. Here we analyze the first global survey on the use of SLR projections comprising 253 coastal practitioners engaged in adaptation/planning from 49 countries with time frames of 2050 and 2100. While recognition of the threat of SLR is almost universally recognized, only 71% of respondents currently utilize SLR projections. Generally, developing countries have lower levels of utilization. There is no global standard in the use of SLR projections: for locations using a standard structure, 53% are planning for a single projection, while the remainder are using multiple …

We conducted a range-wide investigation of the dynamics of site-level reproductive rate of northern spotted owls using survey data from 11 study areas across the subspecies geographic range collected during 1993–2018. Our analytical approach accounted for imperfect detection of owl pairs and misclassification of successful reproduction (i.e., at least one young fledged) and contributed further insights into northern spotted owl population ecology and dynamics. Both nondetection and state misclassification were important, especially because factors affecting these sources of error also affected focal ecological parameters. Annual probabilities of site occupancy were greatest at sites with successful reproduction in the previous year …
