Simulating Gas Exchange In The Human Lung And Body, Noah D. Syroid, Joseph A. Orr, Dwayne R. Westenkow May 1999

Simulating Gas Exchange In The Human Lung And Body, Noah D. Syroid, Joseph A. Orr, Dwayne R. Westenkow

Utah Space Grant Consortium

We have implemented a real-time simulator of gas exchange in the human body and lung. The system realistically mimics respiratory gas uptake and production as a function of pulmonary, cardiovascular, and metabolic parameters. The implementation consists of hardware and software to control the flow of gases entering and leaving a ventilated test lung. Such a device could serve as a bench-top resource for testing newly developed anesthesia, hemo-dynamic, and patient monitors. Preliminary tests have been performed for validation of a non-invasive cardiac monitor. The results, while promising, expose the need for more sophisticated models of the human respiratory and circulatory …

Simulation Of The Human Lung, Noah Syroid, Dwayne Westenskow, Volker E. Boehm Jun 1998

Simulation Of The Human Lung, Noah Syroid, Dwayne Westenskow, Volker E. Boehm

Utah Space Grant Consortium

A human lung simulator was implemented using a model based on the Fick principle. The simulator is designed to emulate C02 production and 02 consumption in the body and gas exchange in the lung. The implementation consists of hardware and software to control the flow of gases entering and leaving a ventilated test lung. An initial test of C02 production qualitatively demonstrated that the lung simulator behaved as expected. Since this project is in its initial stages, additional experimentation and model refinement is necessary for the simulator to accurately represent physiologic responses of a human lung.

The Efficacy Of Guided Imagery For Recovery From Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) Replacement, Deborah D. Durso-Cupal May 1997

The Efficacy Of Guided Imagery For Recovery From Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) Replacement, Deborah D. Durso-Cupal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As an exploratory, developmental injury intervention study, this research investigated the efficacy of providing psychological intervention in the form of relaxation and guided imagery to a group of orthopedic patients recovering from major knee surgery. Utilizing a prospective, experimental research design with 30 subjects randomly assigned to either an intervention, placebo, or control group, this study employed physiological as well as psychological outcome measures. Intervention consisted of 10 individual mental practice sessions for intervention group members as an adjunct to physical therapy. Content of these sessions was intentionally designed to facilitate physiotherapy goals. Imagery protocols with which to deliver these …

Evidence That A Major Portion Of Cellular Potassium Is "Bound", Ivan L. Cameron, W. Elaine Hardman, Keithley E. Hunter, Christine Haskin, Nancy K. R. Smith, Gary D. Fullerton Jan 1990

Evidence That A Major Portion Of Cellular Potassium Is "Bound", Ivan L. Cameron, W. Elaine Hardman, Keithley E. Hunter, Christine Haskin, Nancy K. R. Smith, Gary D. Fullerton

Scanning Microscopy

In this report we briefly review recent evidence which shows that a substantial proportion of intracellular K+ is "bound" or perturbed from the physicochemical properties expected in dilute aqueous solutions. In addition, we present evidence from electron probe x-ray microanalysis of thin cryosections of cells which indicates that the binding of K+ to anionic groups either carboxyl groups (HCO2) on proteins or to phosphate groups in creatine phosphate (CrP) , in adenosine triphosphate, (ATP), in protein and in nucleic acids, are the main determinants of the maintenance of (as differentiated from the generated of) the well …

Public School Preschool For Disadvantaged Children: Program Quality And Long-Term Effects, Ellen Frede May 1989

Public School Preschool For Disadvantaged Children: Program Quality And Long-Term Effects, Ellen Frede

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although preschool for disadvantaged children is strongly supported nationally as a beneficial endeavor, the research that underlies this support has mostly been limited to small-scale, high-quality experiments. Some have questioned the ability of public schools to provide similar experiences for young children and to produce long-term effects. This study is a long-term follow-up in first-grade children who attended preschool in a statewide public school program. The classrooms were observed to assess the quality of treatment. It was determined that children who attended classrooms that provided medium- to high-quality experiences outperformed those in poor-quality classrooms, as well as comparison children who …

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers May 1985

Beta-Endorphin And Running Addiction: Use In The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Mania, Depression, And Anxiety, James Glenn Rogers

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Neither Glasser's (1976) survey data nor popular magazine articles (which seldom cite references) have provided conclusive evidence regarding the existence of running addiction or established causality between this addiction and Beta-endorphin. An integration and summarization of research on the effects of opiates, Beta-endorphin and running will answer the following question, or indicate where evidence is insufficient and explore avenues that require further research.

  • Question 1: Is distance running addictive and if so, what is the role of Beta-endorphin in this addiction?

Secondly, prior reviews of research of the effects of opiates and Beta-endorphin on psychopathological illnesses will be combined with …

Children's Perceptions Of Parental Responses To Boys' And Girls' Aggressive Behavior, K. B. Rohrbach May 1979

Children's Perceptions Of Parental Responses To Boys' And Girls' Aggressive Behavior, K. B. Rohrbach

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in children's perceptions of mothers' and fathers' to aggressing girls and boys. A picture test of children aggressing was devised and administered to 52 fourth grade children from upper middle socioeconomic backgrounds attending school in an Idaho community.

Sex of aggressor, type of aggression (verbal or physical), and sex of parent were investigated as factors possibly related to children's perceptions. None of these variables were found to be significant in this sample. However, boys' perceptions of how parents respond to children aggressing were significantly different from girls' perceptions. Girls perceived parents …

Energy Usage Trends, Energy-Food Conversion Efficiency, And Relative Energy Efficiency Of Primary Crop Agriculture, Estimated From Energy-Nutrient Conversion Ratios In Mexico, India, United States, And Japan, Gerald L. Blight May 1977

Energy Usage Trends, Energy-Food Conversion Efficiency, And Relative Energy Efficiency Of Primary Crop Agriculture, Estimated From Energy-Nutrient Conversion Ratios In Mexico, India, United States, And Japan, Gerald L. Blight

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Energy-nutrient conversion ratios, as a measure of relative agricultural efficiency for Mexico, India, in the United States, and Japan between 1951 and 1974, were calculated for protein, B-vitamins, calcium, iron and food energy production. Estimates from the different nutrient ratios showed a range in percent change of production efficiency over the twenty-four year period. Indian estimates were the most consistent with only a 7 percent variability. Japan (23 percent), United States (42 percent), and Mexico (43 percent) each showed greater variability in their efficiency estimate ranges from aggregate energy-nutrient conversion ratios. Japan was the only country for which negative trends …

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey May 1961

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …
