Monitoring Goes-R Abi Radiometric Performances With A Machine Learning System, Zhenping Li, Ken Mitchell, Biruh Tesfaye
Monitoring Goes-R Abi Radiometric Performances With A Machine Learning System, Zhenping Li, Ken Mitchell, Biruh Tesfaye
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
The GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument represents a considerable challenge for engineers to monitor its health, safety, and radiometric performance. As there are 7856 detectors across 16 spectral channels, the existing approach for monitoring the radiometric performance of the GOES N-P Imagers, each with only 16 detectors, is no-longer possible. The ABI radiometric monitoring has to be automated in order to handle such a huge volume of data. To help with this task, a machine learning system has been developed and implemented that automates the trending and monitoring of ABI radiometric calibration datasets. This machine-learning framework is used to …

Using The Moon As A Calibration Source For A Fleet Of Satellites, Arin Jumpasut, Adriana Fukuzato, Ignacio Zuleta
The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Radiometric calibration is an ongoing concern at Planet. The moon has been used as a stable calibration source by previous imaging systems, making it a natural choice for radiometric calibration efforts at Planet. Planet has been conducting an ongoing Lunar capture campaign since Q4 of 2016 and has amassed a database of over 1.7 million images of the moon so far.
Every lunar cycle over 100 satellites take collects of the moon at three phase angles in both the waxing and waning part of the cycle and a subset of these satellites take daily collects of the moon while in …

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)
Calibration accuracy, long-term precision, and inter-consistency are key on-orbit performance metrics for Earth observing sensors. The accuracy and consistency of environmental measurements across multiple instruments in low Earth and geostationary orbits are directly connected to the scientific understanding of complex systems, such as Earth’s weather and climate. Recent studies have demonstrated the quantitative impacts of observational accuracy on the quality of science data products and the ability to detect climate change trends for essential climate variables (e.g., Earth’s radiation budget, cloud feedback, and long-term trends in cloud parameters). It is common for instruments to carry on-board references for calibration at …

We address the issue of optimal investment in “preventative capital” to mitigate episodic, mobile-source air pollution events. We calibrate Berry et al.'s (2015) endogenous-risk model using a unique dataset related to "red air day" episodes occurring in Northern Utah over the past decade. Our analysis demonstrates that, under a wide range of circumstances, the optimal steady-state level of preventative capital stock – raised through the issuance of a municipal “clean air bond” that funds more aggressive mitigation efforts – can meet the standard for PM2.5 concentrations with positive social net benefits. We estimate benefit-cost ratios ranging between 0.9:1 and 2.2:1, …

Gastrinoma And Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome In Canids: A Literature Review And A Case In A Mexican Gray Wolf, Jason D. Struthers, Nick Robl, Valerie M. Wong, Matti Kiupel
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Student Research
Gastrinoma, an infrequent diagnosis in middle-aged dogs, occurs with nonspecific gastrointestinal morbidity. Laboratory tests can yield a presumptive diagnosis, but definitive diagnosis depends on histopathology and immunohistochemistry. We describe a malignant pancreatic gastrinoma with lymph node metastases and corresponding Zollinger–Ellison syndrome in a Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi) and review this endocrine neoplasm in domestic dogs. A 12-y-old, captive, male Mexican gray wolf developed inappetence and weight loss. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a thickened duodenum and peritoneal effusion. Two duodenal perforations were noted on exploratory celiotomy and were repaired. Persisting clinical signs led to a second celiotomy that …

How Useful Is Travel-Based Multitasking? Evidence From Commuters In Portland, Oregon, Patrick A. Singleton
How Useful Is Travel-Based Multitasking? Evidence From Commuters In Portland, Oregon, Patrick A. Singleton
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
As research on travel-based multitasking—doing other things while traveling—becomes more common, some studies also investigate the quality or value of activity participation during travel. This idea of travel usefulness is a component of the positive utility of travel concept; understanding the benefits of travel-based multitasking is important for calculating accurate economic values trading-off travel time and other variables. This study analyzed travel usefulness and its potential determinants using a 2016 survey of about 650 commuters in the Portland, Oregon, area. Ordered logit models identified factors associated with subjective assessments of the overall usefulness of activity participation while on a recent …

Calibration Parameter Selection And Watershed Hydrology Model Evaluation In Time And Frequency Domains, Karthik Kumarasamy, Patrick Belmont
Calibration Parameter Selection And Watershed Hydrology Model Evaluation In Time And Frequency Domains, Karthik Kumarasamy, Patrick Belmont
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Watershed scale models simulating hydrological and water quality processes have advanced rapidly in sophistication, process representation, flexibility in model structure, and input data. With calibration being an inevitable step prior to any model application, there is need for a simple procedure to assess whether or not a parameter should be adjusted for calibration. We provide a rationale for a hierarchical selection of parameters to adjust during calibration and recommend that modelers progress from parameters that are most uncertain to parameters that are least uncertain, namely starting with pure calibration parameters, followed by derived parameters, and finally measured parameters. We show …

Mere observation of objects in our surroundings can potentiate movement, a fact reflected by visually-primed activation of motor cortical networks. This mechanism holds potential value for reactive balance control where recovery actions of the arms or legs must be targeted to a new support base to avoid a fall. The present study was conducted to test if viewing a wall-mounted safety handle – the type of handle commonly used to regain balance – results in activation of motor cortical networks. We hypothesized that the hand area of the primary motor cortex would be facilitated shortly after visual access to a …

New Insights Into The Glycosylation Steps In The Biosynthesis Of Sch47554 And Sch47555, Ozkan Fidan, Riming Yan, Gabrielle Gladstone, Tong Zhou, Du Zhu, Jixun Zhan
Biological Engineering Faculty Publications
Sch47554 and Sch47555 are antifungal compounds from Streptomyces sp. SCC‐2136. The availability of the biosynthetic gene cluster made it possible to track genes that encode biosynthetic enzymes responsible for the structural features of these two angucyclines. Sugar moieties play important roles in the biological activities of many natural products. An investigation into glycosyltransferases (GTs) might potentially help to diversify pharmaceutically significant drugs through combinatorial biosynthesis. Sequence analysis indicates that SchS7 is a putative C‐GT, whereas SchS9 and SchS10 are proposed to be O‐GTs. In this study, the roles of these three GTs in the biosynthesis of Sch47554 and Sch47555 are …

The State Of American Federalism 2017–2018: Unilateral Executive Action, Regulatory Rollback, And State Resistance, Shanna Rose, Greg Goelzhauser
Political Science Faculty Publications
The state of American federalism in 2017–2018 is characterized by federal policy reversals, as the Trump administration and congressional Republicans continue to undo many of the Obama administration’s policies. Two themes are highlighted in this essay. First, major policy changes continue to be undertaken primarily through unilateral executive action, even with Republicans holding the presidency and both the House and Senate. Ideological divisions within the Republican Party prevented Congress from enacting major legislation, save for a tax reform measure, and resulted in policy changes on health care, immigration, and the environment being made through executive and administrative action. Another prominent …

Implications Of Sensor Inconsistencies And Remote Sensing Error In The Use Of Small Unmanned Aerial Systems For Generation Of Information Products For Agricultural Management, Mac Mckee, Ayman Nassar, Alfonso F. Torres-Rua, Mahyar Aboutalebi, William Kustas
AggieAir Publications
Small, unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) for remote sensing represent a relatively new and growing technology to support decisions for agricultural operations. The size and power limitations of these systems present challenges for the weight, size, and capability of the sensors that can be carried, as well as the geographical coverage that is possible. These factors, together with a lack of standards for sensor technology, its deployment, and data analysis, lead to uncertainties in data quality that can be difficult to detect or characterize. These, in turn, limit comparability between data from different sources and, more importantly, imply limits on the …

Multispectral Remote Sensing For Yield Estimation Using High-Resolution Imagery From An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Mahyar Aboutalebi, Alfonso F. Torres-Rua, Niel Allen
AggieAir Publications
Satellites and autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are two major platforms for acquiring remotely-sensed information of the earth’s surface. Due to the limitations of satellite-based imagery, such as coarse spatial resolution and fixed schedules, applications of UAVs as low-cost remote sensing systems are rapidly expanding in many research areas, particularly precision agriculture. UAVs can provide imagery with high spatial resolution (finer than 1 meter) and acquire information in visible, near infrared, and even thermal bands. In agriculture, vegetation characteristics such as health, water stress, and the amount of biomass, can be estimated using UAV imagery. In this study, three sets …

Bridge Inspection: Human Performance, Unmanned Aerial Systems And Automation, Sattar Dorafshan, Marc Maguire
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) have become of considerable private and commercial interest for a variety of jobs and entertainment in the past 10 years. This paper is a literature review of the state of practice for the United States bridge inspection programs and outlines how automated and unmanned bridge inspections can be made suitable for present and future needs. At its best, current technology limits UAS use to an assistive tool for the inspector to perform a bridge inspection faster, safer, and without traffic closure. The major challenges for UASs are satisfying restrictive Federal Aviation Administration regulations, control issues in …

Chat reference at USU Libraries has decreased since introducing the service. In order to understand this trend, we analyzed a year’s worth of chat transcripts from August 2016 to August 2017. In addition to examining the types and timing of patron questions, we coded qualities of the chat interactions themselves. We will share how the results of our analysis might inform future changes to the chat reference service and staff training in an effort to “level up” the library’s virtual reference.

Understanding Dysrhythmic Speech: When Rhythm Does Not Matter And Learning Does Not Happen, Stephanie A. Borrie, Kaitlin L. Lansford, Tyson S. Barrett
Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education Faculty Publications
A positive relationship between rhythm perception and improved understanding of a naturally dysrhythmic speech signal, ataxic dysarthria, has been previously reported [Borrie, Lansford, and Barrett. (2017). J. Speech Lang. Hear. Res. 60, 3110–3117]. The current follow-on investigation suggests that this relationship depends on the nature of the dysrhythmia. When the corrupted rhythm cues are relatively predictable, affording some learnable acoustic regularity, the relationship is replicated. However, this relationship is nonexistent, along with any intelligibility improvements, when the corrupted rhythm cues are unpredictable. Findings highlight a key role for rhythm perception and distributional regularities in adaptation to dysrhythmic speech.
Numerical Study On The Hydraulic Conditions For Species Migrating Downstream Over A Weir, Carsten Thorenz, Michael Gebhardt, Roman Weichert
Numerical Study On The Hydraulic Conditions For Species Migrating Downstream Over A Weir, Carsten Thorenz, Michael Gebhardt, Roman Weichert
International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures
The German Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) has to replace several weirs in the near future. In addition to maintenance and operation, the WSV is also responsible for the establishment of the ecological continuity, i.e. free migration of species like fish along the river and thus over weirs. The downstream migration over weirs with low to medium heads was a mostly neglected issue and was commonly considered to be an insignificant hazard for fishes. Recently, this assumption was tackled by fish biologists by applying design rules for plunge pools at fish bypasses to weirs. As a consequence, an additional plunge …
