The Impact Of Master’S Level Education On The Assessment And Intervention Of Pediatric Swallowing, Andrea Seagren May 2019

The Impact Of Master’S Level Education On The Assessment And Intervention Of Pediatric Swallowing, Andrea Seagren

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Purpose: Pediatric swallowing disorders is increasing in prevalence as medical advancements are made. This increase raises the need for more speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to be involved in the assessment and intervention of pediatric swallowing. However, discrepancies exist in the amount and level of education being provided during academic coursework in the area of pediatric swallowing.

Method 1: The investigation had a two-tier approach. Part one included a survey specifically targeting SLPs who graduated within the most recent accreditation standards (2014 to present) and masters level students in their second year of graduate school (n=100). Part two explored academic courses offered …

Phosphorus Rate Effects With And Without Avail® On Dryland Winter Wheat In An Eroded Calcareous Soil, Ryan C. Hodges May 2019

Phosphorus Rate Effects With And Without Avail® On Dryland Winter Wheat In An Eroded Calcareous Soil, Ryan C. Hodges

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soluble phosphorus fertilizer is bound in the soil rapidly after application in soils high in calcium. A fertilizer additive known as AVAIL® (J.R. Simplot Company) is purported to keep applied phosphorus fertilizer more available to plants by binding to soil minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, thereby reducing phosphorus binding. This could prove useful due to the attraction of AVAIL® with cations such as Ca2+, but is fairly unstudied for dryland wheat production on alkaline, calcium-rich soils. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of low-rate fertilizer treatments with AVAIL® on dryland small grain …

Quantifying The Value Teachers Place On Non-Monetary Factors When Evaluating Job Opportunities, Jeffrey Gunther Apr 2019

Quantifying The Value Teachers Place On Non-Monetary Factors When Evaluating Job Opportunities, Jeffrey Gunther

Teacher Education and Leadership Student Research

The way in which working conditions, personal characteristics, and school factors influence teacher recruitment and retention is an oft-studied topic in the field of education finance and policy. Through decades of research, it has become increasingly clear that teachers respond to a set of monetary and non-monetary factors when making decisions in the teacher labor market. What is less clear is the relative or absolute value teachers place on factors such as salary, student demographic factors, school conditions, and other working conditions such as class size, curricular autonomy, and principal support, to name a few. This project introduces the use …

Altered Gene Response To Aflatoxin B1 In The Spleens Of Susceptible And Resistant Turkeys, Kent M. Reed, Kristelle M. Mendoza, Roger A. Coulombe Jr. Apr 2019

Altered Gene Response To Aflatoxin B1 In The Spleens Of Susceptible And Resistant Turkeys, Kent M. Reed, Kristelle M. Mendoza, Roger A. Coulombe Jr.

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Susceptibility and/or resistance to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a threshold trait governed principally by glutathione S transferase (GST)-mediated detoxification. In poultry, domesticated turkeys are highly sensitive to AFB1, most likely due to dysfunction in hepatic GSTs. In contrast, wild turkeys are comparatively resistant to aflatoxicosis due to the presence of functional hepatic GSTAs and other possible physiological and immunological interactions. The underlying genetic basis for the disparate GST function in turkeys is unknown as are the broader molecular interactions that control the systemic response. This study quantifies the effects of dietary AFB1 on gene …

Marine reserves can effectively restore harvested populations, and ‘mega-reserves’ increasingly protect large tracts of ocean. However, no method exists of monitoring ecological responses at this large scale. Herbivory is a key mechanism structuring ecosystems, and this consumer–resource interaction's strength on coral reefs can indicate ecosystem health. We screened 1372, and measured features of 214, reefs throughout Australia's Great Barrier Reef using high-resolution satellite imagery, combined with remote underwater videography and assays on a subset, to quantify the prevalence, size and potential causes of ‘grazing halos’. Halos are known to be seascape-scale footprints of herbivory and other ecological interactions. Here we …

Baseline Cultural Competence In Physician Assistant Students, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, Paula B. Phelps, H. Cathleen Tarp Apr 2019

Baseline Cultural Competence In Physician Assistant Students, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, Paula B. Phelps, H. Cathleen Tarp

Psychology Faculty Publications

Purpose

Cultural competence is a critical component in health care services. The relationship between health disparities and prejudice and discrimination is well documented. Prejudicial attitudes and discriminatory behavior are modifiable through training yet few programs have evidence-based training. No published data has reported on baseline levels of cultural competencies in medical trainees which is necessary for tailoring programs appropriate to the audience. This manuscript fills that gap by reporting on data from three cohorts of first-year Physician Assistant (PA) students (N = 216). We examined students’ baseline levels with special attention to differences in cultural competence constructs across age, …

140%: Helping Students With Reading Disabilities, Emily Joy Powell Apr 2019

140%: Helping Students With Reading Disabilities, Emily Joy Powell

Tutor's Column

Tutoring students with reading disabilities will take more than a simple knowledge of reading disabilities in general; it takes knowing how to ask specific questions and fighting against popular stereotypes to create a successful tutoring session. Studies show that one in five students have some type of reading disability. There are ways for tutors to make these students feel more comfortable and confident in their ability to write, however, these techniques must be practiced. While mastering these techniques can be profoundly beneficial for students with reading disabilities, they are valuable to apply in all tutoring sessions.

Life‐History Differences Across Latitude In Common Side‐Blotched Lizards (Uta Stansburiana), Geoffrey D. Smith, Peter A. Zani, Susannah S. French

Biology Faculty Publications

  1. Life‐history strategies are known to shift with latitude in many species. While life‐history variation related to body size, reproductive investment, and behavior has been studied for years, another crucial life‐history component is the immune system, which can influence an animal's survival.
  2. We measured selected life‐history traits in side‐blotched lizards in southern Utah and Oregon in the field for two consecutive years and conducted a common‐garden experiment in the laboratory to determine how organisms from different latitudes optimize either immunity or reproduction. We observed lizards from southern populations, which are known to be shorter‐lived, had lower immune function during reproduction when …

The Effects Of Photographic Activity Schedules On Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity In Children With Asd, Lorraine Becerra Apr 2019

The Effects Of Photographic Activity Schedules On Moderate-To-Vigorous Physical Activity In Children With Asd, Lorraine Becerra

Student Research Symposium

Obesity rates in children who live in the United States have increased 17% in the past few decades and affects approximately 1/3 of U.S. children (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2012). Occurrence of obesity in children with disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), were found to be 40% higher than for children without disabilities (CDC, 2014; Hinckson et al. 2013; Curtin et al. 2010). Regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is likely to reduce many risks associated with obesity in children (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). The Observational System for Recording Physical Activity codes (OSRAC; Brown et al., …

Impact Of The Total Western Diet For Rodents On Colon Mucosal Gene Expression In A Multigenerational Murine Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Sumira Phatak Apr 2019

Impact Of The Total Western Diet For Rodents On Colon Mucosal Gene Expression In A Multigenerational Murine Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Sumira Phatak

Student Research Symposium

A Western type dietary pattern is a major risk factor for colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Observations from transgenerational studies suggest that epimutations may be inherited, resulting in persistent aberrant gene expression in offspring. Previously, our group reported that ancestral exposure to the total Western diet (TWD) increased CAC incidence and disease severity in F3 offspring. Moreover, exposure to TWD over multiple generations exacerbated disease in F3 offspring as compared to those fed TWD directly. For the present work, we hypothesized that ancestral or cumulative exposure to TWD will result in differential expression of cancer critical genes, explains the greater tumor …

Listener Impressions Of Individuals Who Use Alaryngeal Communication, Kate Scott Apr 2019

Listener Impressions Of Individuals Who Use Alaryngeal Communication, Kate Scott

Student Research Symposium

For individuals with laryngeal cancer, a multimodal treatment approach is commonly used, which often includes a total laryngectomy. Total laryngectomy involves surgical removal of the entire larynx, the muscular and cartilaginous structure in the neck, also known as the voice box. Subsequently, a hole is surgically created in the front of the neck and trachea (or windpipe), then a small tube and valve called a stoma is inserted into the hole. The purpose of the stoma is to reroute the respiratory pathway from the mouth and nose to this opening. For individuals who require a total laryngectomy, the ability to …

The Influence Of Postural Stability And Yoga Experience On Perceptions Of Other's Postural Stability, Kristina Casos Apr 2019

The Influence Of Postural Stability And Yoga Experience On Perceptions Of Other's Postural Stability, Kristina Casos

Student Research Symposium

The purpose of this study was to ascertain if an extensive previous history of experience with body stability affects one's gaze and postural sway when making a judgement of another individual's stability. We assessed postural control of two groups of individuals, those with and without yoga experience. Each group underwent a postural test in the form of a vestibular balance test (COBALT). Each group was then asked to make stability judgments of another individual through a series of photographs of that individual holding different postures. While making the stability judgments, the participant's gaze was tracked and their postural sway was …

Depression Mediates The Association Of Disordered Eating Behaviors And Sexual Function In Female Service Members And Veterans, Whitney Livingston Apr 2019

Depression Mediates The Association Of Disordered Eating Behaviors And Sexual Function In Female Service Members And Veterans, Whitney Livingston

Student Research Symposium

Introduction: Poor sexual function is comprised of diminished sexual desire and arousal, presence of sexual pain, inability to reach orgasm, and loss of satisfaction. Worse sexual function is associated with disordered eating behavior; however, the mechanism through which this association exists remains unclear. Theory suggests that depression mediates the association of disordered eating behaviors and poor sexual function in female service members and veterans. Indeed, veterans with depression have almost 12 times higher odds of having an eating disorder diagnosis and 7 times higher odds of having a sexual dysfunction disorder, relative to those without depression. The purpose of the …

The Effect Of Religious Priming On Rape Victim Blame, Emma Heath Apr 2019

The Effect Of Religious Priming On Rape Victim Blame, Emma Heath

Student Research Symposium

Rape victim blame contributes to unreported incidents and failure to support victims (Ahrens, 2006). This study investigated the relation between religious priming and victim blame. Religious priming is when someone is exposed to ideas of God or religion. Studies show that when participants are primed with religion, they engage in more prosocial behavior (Shariff & Norenzayan, 2007). The present study aimed to examine whether the benefit of religious priming extends to reducing rape victim blame. Data were collected using a Qualtrics Panel (N=260). Analyses revealed Religious Fundamentalism (i.e. level of religiosity) to be significantly correlated with victim blame (r(259) = …

Hydraulic Fracturing, Mandilyn Hatch, Shannon Burnham Apr 2019

Hydraulic Fracturing, Mandilyn Hatch, Shannon Burnham

Student Research Symposium

Hydraulic fracturing or also know as fracking, the removal of natural gas and oil from shale rock, took off in the 1990s, but the anti-fracking movement didn't start taking notice until 2005. Fracking began to take place in the the south and the middle of the United States, because those areas are not known for have environmental activists. Anti-fracking groups main goal was to convince the public that fracking, caused health problems, contaminated drinking water, and increased seismic activity. Where as pro-fracking groups claim that it creates jobs, and boosts the economy for the locals in the area. Our main …

For this literature review, nine different studies have been reviewed to answer the research question over a variety of settings. In the nine different studies that were reviewed the animals used were either dogs, horses, or guinea pigs. These studies were used to determine which of these animals were more effective in a therapeutic setting, and more effective in the improvement of the symptoms in …

I Can't Breathe; The Effects Of Hydraulic Fracturing On Public Health, Lily Fullmer, Sophie Hancey Apr 2019

I Can't Breathe; The Effects Of Hydraulic Fracturing On Public Health, Lily Fullmer, Sophie Hancey

Student Research Symposium

This research analyzes public health risks associated with hydraulic fracturing and the public perception of these risks specifically in Denton, Texas. Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is an expensive and environmentally harmful project that might not be worth it with the potential of air or water pollution at every site. The United States Energy Information Agency released an assessment in 2012 that the Marcellus Shale contains 141 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making it one of the largest reserves in the world (Brasier et al., 2017). More specifically, Denton County in Texas is one of the core counties …
