The Effects Of Low Socioeconomic Status On Parent-Child Interactions, Chelsea Dikwa
The Effects Of Low Socioeconomic Status On Parent-Child Interactions, Chelsea Dikwa
Student Research Symposium
Interactions between parents and children during infancy and childhood are some of the many key factors to facilitating proper child development (Yoshikawa et al., 2012). Children’s physical and psychological development are very much influenced by their parents (Bornstein, 2002) being able to support positive parenting interactions. In most cases these positive interactions can often be difficult for mothers of lower socioeconomic status. This can be because the work schedules of families with lower SES are ones that are set at non-standard work times which can disrupt family routines and relationships (Strazdins et al., 2004). Or the increased stress that lower …
Secondary Effects Of Stair Striping On Stair Negotiation, Travis Boman
Secondary Effects Of Stair Striping On Stair Negotiation, Travis Boman
Student Research Symposium
Stairs can be a concern for injury, with falls negatively impacting one’s health. A proposed strategy to reduce fall risk during stair negotiation involves enhancing the visual contrast of stairs, or adding clear demarcations of where the stairs begin and end. Stair negotiation walk speed (m/s), may provide insight on the visual contrast striping effects. In addition, distractions such as mobile phone use during stair negotiation could increase fall risk, and may alter handrail risk. Therefore our secondary (fall risk – primary) objectives were to determine if: (1) if staircase striping would increase walk speed, and (2) if mobile phone …
Mft Interventions For Racial/Ethnic Minorities: A Decade-In-Review Of Three Therapeutic Journals, Moana Fullmer
Mft Interventions For Racial/Ethnic Minorities: A Decade-In-Review Of Three Therapeutic Journals, Moana Fullmer
Student Research Symposium
Social inequality and its subsequent marginalization of racial and ethnic minorities are significant societal crises of our time. Racial tensions culminated in an explosive head this past Spring as protestors took to the streets, airwaves, and social media to voice that an immediate change in our culture was in order. A growing body of evidence indicates that mental health disparities that disadvantage racial and ethnic minorities within all mental health fields, including marriage and family therapy (MFT), exist in the United States (Tseng et al., 2021). Currently, in the United States, more than 100 million people identify as racial or …
Investigation Of Active Life Balancing To Recondition Li-Ion Battery Packs For 2Nd Life, Marium Rasheed
Investigation Of Active Life Balancing To Recondition Li-Ion Battery Packs For 2Nd Life, Marium Rasheed
Student Research Symposium
An investigation is presented into the application of active life balancing battery management systems to recondition inhomogeneous Li-ion battery packs and achieve homogeneity in capacity for second life. The work proposes a life balancing objective map, which controls the state of charge references for each cell in a battery pack based on its capacity relative to other cells. The impacts of life balancing objective maps on the reconditioning time and overall pack capacity fade are considered. Moreover, the proposed approach accounts for various load and environmental effects, including depth-of-discharge, battery pack temperature, number of cycles per day, and cells' resting …
Detecting Dna Oxidation In Sperm, Alexie Zwerdling
Detecting Dna Oxidation In Sperm, Alexie Zwerdling
Student Research Symposium
Declining body-wide levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) that are present in normal aging men are linked to decreased sperm quality and DNA integrity. When NAD is low, the amount of oxidative stress on the DNA appears to be increased, due to the limited regeneration of the antioxidant glutathione, which is NAD-dependent. We therefore hypothesize that the increased sperm DNA damage in the aging male is caused by an elevated formation of 8-oxoguanine in the DNA, caused by increased oxidative stress when NAD levels are low. To test this hypothesis, a transgenic mouse model (ANDY mouse) was used to create …

Covid 19 & Impulsive Spending, Rebekah Miller
Covid 19 & Impulsive Spending, Rebekah Miller
Student Research Symposium
Everyone responds to negative emotions in a different way. One response less-frequently spoken of is shopping, commonly referred to as “retail therapy”. In 2020 the world was thrown into chaos by the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lock downs, riots and overrun hospitals. In this study we wanted to look at the correlation between anxiety and shopping behaviors, primarily impulsive vs cognitive purchasing. With a voluntary survey (N=81) we found that 46% (N=37) of people used shopping therapeutically to some extent. We also found a positive correlation between those that used shopping as a way to relieve …
The Effect Of Step Edge Highlighters And Distractions, Such As Mobile Devices, On Successful Stair Negotiation, Christopher Long, Samantha Corbridge
The Effect Of Step Edge Highlighters And Distractions, Such As Mobile Devices, On Successful Stair Negotiation, Christopher Long, Samantha Corbridge
Student Research Symposium
Falls on stairs occur frequently in older adults and they can pose a significant health and financial risk to this population. Fall frequency may be reduced, however, through the enhancement of visual cues, such as striping the steps' face and edge, and the removal of distractions, such as mobile device use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of these factors on fall frequency during stair negotiation. Our objectives were to determine if: staircase striping reduces fall risk factors; handrail reaching increases with proximity to the handrail; handrail reaching decreases with mobile device use, compared to hands …

Comparative Study Of The Microbiome Of The Native Plant Ceanothus Velutinus (Snowbrush) From Different Locations And Greenhouse Studies, Jyothsna Ganesh
Student Research Symposium
Climatic change is one of the biggest threats to the ecosystem and biodiversity by enhancing environmental stresses. Environmental stresses such as biotic and abiotic stresses affect plant health and reduce crop production. The rhizosphere microbiome of a plant plays a significant role in a plant's defense against various biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, we are investigating the microbiome diversity of bulk soil, rhizosphere, and endosphere of Ceanothus velutinus, snowbrush. Ceanothus is an evergreen native plant that is usually found in dry areas and thrives well in harsh conditions. The snowbrush samples were collected from different locations 1920m, 1950m, …
Effects Of Early Developmental Parenting On Later Child Language Development In Low-Income Families That Speak English As A Second Language, David Novoa
Student Research Symposium
Parenting language experiences are crucial for children’s development and understanding. Language development context is very complex, especially for families that speak English as a second language and do not have the resources to influence children’s development. Being bilingual could bring a lot of benefits to children's development if the right supports are available for families. However, if resources are not available for families who are affected by low-income status it will be difficult for children to reach their potential. The aim of this project is to determine the effect of early developmental parenting, on later language development in low-income families …
Human-Accelerated Biodiversity Loss During Climate Change Threatens Human Health & Food Security, Miles Robertson
Human-Accelerated Biodiversity Loss During Climate Change Threatens Human Health & Food Security, Miles Robertson
Student Research Symposium
Humans have been the single most impactful species to the biosphere for the past few thousand years. Usually, consequences of human-caused ecological changes come about on a time scale larger than our normal cause-and-effect perception allows. However, with the onset of climate change, the effects of human-accelerated biodiversity loss are set to expose vulnerabilities in human health and food security. My research explores three arenas in which climate change is set to exacerbate the effects of biodiversity loss: zoonotic disease, US corn crops, and the Chinese fishing industry. Thy Sorrow And Thy Conception: Pregnancy And Abortion In Early Christian Theology, Anastasia Davis
Thy Sorrow And Thy Conception: Pregnancy And Abortion In Early Christian Theology, Anastasia Davis
Student Research Symposium
Christianity’s earliest centuries were filled with a multitude of efforts toward unity and consistency. Through fervent debate and political maneuvering, competing branches attempted to establish personal legitimacy and a cohesive doctrine. These conflicts brought questions of personhood, mortality, and life to the forefront, alongside the related questions of gender, power, and sexuality. This paper looks to leverage primary sources in the form of medical writings, theological debates, and legal histories in order to bring clarity to the earliest thoughts on abortion and contraception in the earliest Christian communities. Presentation Time: Thursday, 9-10 a.m. Zoom link: https://usu-edu.zoom.us/j/83802262211?pwd=QU5icUo4WW03NWZwNXVPNjlXYXQvUT09
The Effect Of Video Narratives On Creating Realistic Expectations Of Hearing Aids In Adults, Katherine Van Wagoner
The Effect Of Video Narratives On Creating Realistic Expectations Of Hearing Aids In Adults, Katherine Van Wagoner
Student Research Symposium
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not being exposed to multiple perspectives regarding hearing aids (HAs) influences HA use in adults with hearing loss (HL). The majority of adults with HL do not use HAs, even if they are prescribed to them. This is a problem because hearing loss has a large impact on individuals' quality of life and overall health. In the field of audiology, we are continually looking for ways to increase HA uptake. There are not currently any viable solutions in the field of audiology, so we have turned to the field of …
Maintenance Of Water Systems With The Bear River Health Department, Kaden Bunch
Maintenance Of Water Systems With The Bear River Health Department, Kaden Bunch
Student Research Symposium
The Bear River Health Department (BRHD) is one of the 13 local health departments that work to promote and protect the citizens of Utah. Within the department, there are dozens of divisions, one such overseeing maintenance and approval of public water systems and pools. Public water systems are prone to bacterial growth, whether caused by those that use these systems, construction, or simply an animal that slipped in. To solve this issue, BRHD and the state of Utah actively monitor these public systems to ensure the health of those that use them. This is done by measuring chlorine levels in …

Visitation to parks and protected areas is a common COVID-19 coping strategy promoted by state and national public health officials and political leadership. Crowding and congestions in parks has been a perennial problem and the ability to socially distance within them is an unproven assumption. Is it possible to socially distance in a busy national park that has been designed to concentrate use?Presentation Time: Thursday, 3-4 p.m.
Using Handmade Cloning To Reduce Oocyte Mitochondria In Reconstructed Embryos, Laura Adams
Using Handmade Cloning To Reduce Oocyte Mitochondria In Reconstructed Embryos, Laura Adams
Student Research Symposium
Mitochondrial heteroplasmy, the presence of more than one population of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in one cell, can cause metabolic issues and reduced ATP synthesis, even at relatively low levels. The presence of this condition in somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos likely contributes to reduced prenatal and postnatal viability: the majority of the oocyte’s mitochondria is still present at the time of nuclear transfer, as well as through any further embryonic development post-fusion and activation. Though the somatic cell also contributes its mitochondria (which can successfully communicate with its nucleus), the oocyte’s mitochondria compose a greater proportion of the total …
Ubiquitous Augmented Reality Could Hold Implications For Health, Data Privacy, Societal Norms, Madelyn Gardner
Ubiquitous Augmented Reality Could Hold Implications For Health, Data Privacy, Societal Norms, Madelyn Gardner
Student Research Symposium
Common use of augmented reality (AR) technologies is emerging on the tech horizon. AR is the virtualized mixture of real-world objects and locations with superimposed computer-generated imagery. Continuous developments have made AR technologies more accessible and will continue to do so in the coming years. There’s much to look forward to with the advent of sophisticated and accessible AR technologies, but the adverse health effects, heightened privacy issues, and increased social media consequences need to be addressed prior to ubiquitous AR application. This research paper looks at adverse health threats potentiated in the use of AR including epilepsy, adaptation phenomena, …
Anxiety's Relationship With Taking Conflict Personally And Fear Of Missing Out, Bryant Ellis, Alex Crandall, Reed Ericson
Anxiety's Relationship With Taking Conflict Personally And Fear Of Missing Out, Bryant Ellis, Alex Crandall, Reed Ericson
Student Research Symposium
The aim of this investigation was to test the links between two interpersonal communication factors (i.e., fear of missing out, and taking conflict personally) and generalized anxiety. Taking conflict personally (TCP), or an individual’s tendency to perceive conflict as a personal attack (Hample & Dallinger, 1995), leads to anxious thought surrounding conflict and one’s relationships with others. Similarly, having a Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), or apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent, can result in a person feeling anxiety or experiencing a sense of overall negative well-being (Przybylsk et al, 2013). Grounded in …

Medicaid is a federal programs within the US whose goal is to provide healthcare to vulnerable populations such as low-income adults, children, pregnant women, older adults and persons with disabilities. These groups are also some of the same groups found to be most at risk for vulnerability to and exposure to effects of climate change, such as “heat waves, extreme weather events, poor air quality, food safety, infectious diseases, and psychological stressors that can arise from these experiences. As climate change and its effects continue to worsen financial strain will be place on states’ Medicaid programs because of the exacerbating …
Combating Loneliness In Assisted Living Facilities: An Evidence-Based Practice Guide For Social Work Practitioners Working With Older Adults, Annie Alexis Romano
Combating Loneliness In Assisted Living Facilities: An Evidence-Based Practice Guide For Social Work Practitioners Working With Older Adults, Annie Alexis Romano
Evidence-Based Social Work Practice Guide Series
It has been well documented that social needs do not change with aging (Teater, Chonody, & Davis, 2021), but often, older adults are left out of the conversation when it comes to loneliness and the feelings that come with social isolation. In the same way that researchers are de-stigmatizing the mental health conversation for youth and middle-aged adults, we need to bring to light the issues that come with those who live in assisted living facilities or nursing homes and the social issues presented in that population.

An Evidence Based Practice Guide For Parents And Schools: Supporting Kids And Adolescents' Mental Health During And After Covid-19 Pandemic, Ivanna M. Fuentes Javier
Evidence-Based Social Work Practice Guide Series
Adolescent mental health is important to consider by parents and schools. Parents need to build a strengthened mentality in their children and with the school support, the results would be greater. The active participation of schools is needed in order to support kids' and adolescents' mental health and create parent awareness about mental health. Also, when parents are able to identify early signs of mental health problems, they can prevent it from becoming greater and the school can help parents learn about these early signs. In addition, parents play a fundamental role in identifying symptoms of mental health problems in …
Do Aspen Stands Reduce Fire Severity And Stop Fire Spread?, Elyse Doty
Do Aspen Stands Reduce Fire Severity And Stop Fire Spread?, Elyse Doty
Student Research Symposium
Aspen stands are widely thought to behave as fire breaks, reducing fire severity and preventing fire spread. However, this prevailing belief has not been well studied. With larger more intense fires in recent decades and further projected changes in fire behavior for the future, having a better understanding of how aspen trees and stands interact with fire would be valuable for forecasting how our forests will respond to climate change and disturbance in the future. In addition, forest managers in Utah and other regions of the Intermountain West conduct aspen restoration treatments for multiple objectives, including fire mitigation. To quantify …
Roles Of Nad+ In Testicular Aging And Epigenetic Sperm Modifications, Renata Hoskova
Roles Of Nad+ In Testicular Aging And Epigenetic Sperm Modifications, Renata Hoskova
Student Research Symposium
Since 1980, the average age of first-time fathers has been increasing. With increased age, sperm chromatin quality and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) levels are reduced. In order to condense around protamines, sperm DNA undergoes breaks, at which time epigenetic reprogramming occurs. In humans, about 2% of DNA stays wound to histones in spermatozoa. Histones carry post-translational modifications that control gene activity and have the potential to transmit epigenetic information to the offspring. Analysis of epigenetic sperm modifications is being conducted within niacin deficient versus niacin replete mice. The experimental plan includes the characterization of histone exchange in elongating spermatids via …
Use Of Cancer-Associated Mutations To Probe The Role Of Dimerization In Protein Arginine Methyltransferase 1 Catalysis And Physiological Dysfunction, Owen Price
Student Research Symposium
Communication within and between cells, either in the context of normal biological activities or in response to stressors or other stimuli, is a crucial aspect of cell function. One strategy parts of a cell uses to communicate with other parts involves protein arginine methylation. This is a post-translational modification that is catalyzed by the members of the Protein Arginine Methyltransferase (PRMT) family of enzymes. PRMTs are ubiquitous in eukaryotic organisms and they are involved in many signaling pathways in many tissues. Given this broad activity, along with the fact that aberrant arginine methylation is associated with a variety of life-threatening …
Fecal Microbiota Transfer (Fmt) From Tumor-Bearing Mice Fed The Total Western Diet (Twd) Does Not Contribute To A Higher Tumor Burden In Mice Fed A Healthy Diet, Porter Green

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cause of cancer death in the United States. Diet and gut microbiome have shown to influence the development of colitis associated colorectal cancer (CAC). For this study, the goal was to determine the association between colon inflammation, diet and microbiome in the development of CAC in mice. The primary objective of this study was to determine the contribution of gut microbiota from mice donors who have previously consumed one of two basal diets: 1) the standard AIN93G diet, which is designed to promote rodent health; and 2) the total Western diet (TWD), …
Ὁ Δρόμος: Testing The Charge At Marathon, 490 Bce, Daniel Porter
Ὁ Δρόμος: Testing The Charge At Marathon, 490 Bce, Daniel Porter
Student Research Symposium
In 490 BCE, a heavily outnumbered Greek force of mainly Athenians fought an invading Persian army at Marathon to preserve their freedom. According to Herodotus, the Hellenes charged at a run (δρόμος) across the plain, a distance of eight stades (.9 miles), to engage and subsequently repel the Persians. Herodotus continues on to claim that this was the first Greek charge. The reason for this was that the phalanx, the Greek military formation, required close ranks and heavy armor, so running was not easy. Modern historians have questioned Herodotus’ veracity as well as the actual plausibility of this event due …

Factors Associated With Financial Stress In The U.S., Paula Andrea Lopez
Student Research Symposium
Overall consumer debt reached $4.1 trillion in the U.S. (Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 2020). When individuals find themselves under challenging financial circumstances, they can become susceptible to emotional side effects and experience severe financial stress. It is, therefore, timely and important to examine to what extent certain financial stressors increase individuals’ financial stress levels. Using data from the 2018 National Financial Capability Study (NFCS), this study examined the relationship between financial stressors and financial stress and investigated factors associated with financial stress among adults in the U.S. In this study, financial stress level was measured by summing three …

Biophilic Design In Women Health Facilities, Erica Carnea Williams
Student Research Symposium
In Margaret Robertson’s book, Sustainability Principles and Practice-Routledge, 2017, biophilia is described as “the genetically encoded emotional need of humans to affiliate with nature and with other living organisms, evolved as an adaptive mechanism to protect people from hazards and to help them access resources such as food, water, and shelter.” This expresses that biophilia is the innate desire within human beings to have a positive connection to nature. It was a trait developed through years of evolution to keep us safe and now it is said that it can be used in design to reduce stress, expedite healing, and …
