Smallsat missions using cooperating constellations offer significant benefits compared to traditional space missions. These benefits include lower unit costs, better robustness to failures, and the ability to collect data in a distributed fashion. Significant commercial smallsat missions are active in low Earth orbit, and spacecraft operators have expressed interest in smallsat constellations operating both at higher altitudes and in proximity operations missions. Autonomy plays a significant role in extending smallsat missions to these more challenging domains. Autonomy in a broad sense refers to a spacecraft's or constellation's ability to operate independently of ground systems, and affects every part of a …

As satellites and spacecraft grow in number and operate farther from Earth, there is an emerging need for increased autonomy via onboard decision making that is independent of ground stations but allows for collaboration between teams of assets. Such autonomy will relieve the burden on human operators, enable faster responses to dynamic events, and reduce communications between orbital assets and ground stations. Orbit Logic’s Autonomous Planning System (APS) is flexible and customizable onboard software that enables teamed autonomy through the use of Tasking, Collection, Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (TCPED) pipelines onboard the satellites. Its small computational/memory footprint makes it especially …

Machine Learning For Early Satellite Anomaly Detection, Pablo Bernal-Mencia, Kelsey Doerksen, Chen Yap
Small Satellite Conference
Despite its recent disruption to many engineering fields, incorporating machine learning into satellite operations is difficult due to the associated performance restrictions with the relatively small amount of available data during a satellite’s operating lifetime; a satellite needs to be operating for several months to years in order to grow a dataset able to be used in machine learning. That is the reason behind its historically limited application to active satellite operations, whereas a posteriori applications to past missions can be found in the literature. Recently however, the eruption of mega-constellations of satellites, whose hardware, software, and orbit are almost …

Efficient Smallsat Operation Using Scibox, Kristin Fretz, Ralf Perez, Teck Choo, Annette Mirantes, Warren Chen
Small Satellite Conference
Planning and commanding a space operation is inherently a very complex task requiring highly skilled operators from various disciplines coordinating in a timely manner to ensure both smooth and successful operation. This process can be performed manually, however, resolving conflicts quickly becomes an intensive iterative process that underuses a space system’s resources and renders it less responsive to sudden schedule changes. Increasingly complex space missions combined with the desire to maximize efficiency require a different approach. Responding to these challenges is SciBox, an autonomous planning and commanding system and a technology enabler for space operations, developed by the Johns Hopkins …

The operational complexity of managing the Spire constellation continually increases with the routine introduction of additional satellites and new capabilities. The heterogeneous nature of the satellites, payloads, and ground station configurations compounds the difficulty of strategic planning and operational scheduling. In order to efficiently operate this diverse network of assets, Spire developed a suite of bespoke constellation modeling and management tools that are designed to support existing demand and to scale for future needs. The modeling tools enable Spire to accurately simulate and optimize the performance of various constellation configurations prior to deployment. The operational tools required to harness the …

Ph 11.3 Enhances The Solubility Of Potassium Silicate For Liquid Fertilizer, Brendan Fatzinger, Bruce Bugbee
Nutrients
Consistent delivery of up to 1 mM silicon (Si) to the root-zone is beneficial for plant health, but the maximum solubility of silicon is only 1.7 mM between pH 4 and 8. This makes Si difficult to concentrate and add through a proportioner in liquid fertilizer systems. The solubility of Si begins to increase with increasing pH above 9. We added potassium silicate (K2SiO3) and fumed silica (SiO2) to RO water that was pH adjusted to pH 5, 8, 9, 10, or 11 with either KOH or NaOH. Samples were filtered and dried to …

Many diseases, disabilities, and mental health conditions associated with aging can be delayed or prevented through regular exercise. Several barriers to exercise, many of which are exacerbated in rural communities, prevent mid-life and older adults from accessing its benefits. However, recently, a racquet sport named pickleball has become popular among older adults, and it appears to overcome some of these barriers. We conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the impact of a six-week pickleball intervention on measures of muscle function, cognitive function, perceived pain, and cardio-metabolic risk, as well as several psychosocial factors contributing to adherence in sedentary rural participants. …

Automated Fault-Detection For Small Satellite Pointing Control Systems Using One-Sided Learning, Yujia Huang, Philip A. Ferguson
Small Satellite Conference
In this paper, we propose a ground-based automated novelty detection system for a small satellite attitude dynamics control system using a one-sided learning algorithm: One-Class Support Vector Machine (OC-SVM) method. This fault-detection system was designed to only learn from nominal behavior of the satellite during the commissioning phase and to identify and detect anomalies when there was a subtle behavioral failure in the attitude control system. The detection system was trained by only observing the nominal attitude dynamics behavior of a small satellite for a period of time. Training data was obtained from reaction wheel outputs in a healthy attitude …

Quicksat/Autonomy: A Framework Of Autonomy Apis And System For Small Satellites To Support Tactical Intelligence, Surveillance, And Reconnaissance And Vehicle Health Management Functions, Andrew Santangelo
Small Satellite Conference
The QuickSAT/Autonomy is a framework of autonomy APIs and system with flight computer designed for cubesats to support Tactical Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) functions plus generic autonomy related functions such as vehicle health management. The system allows the cubesat through a range of sensors such as a hyperspectral camera to collect data, “perceive” key select information, and alert to the ground what is “sensed”, relaying only the required critical data. Operators can later download larger data sets as needed. This will allow the streamlining what is communicated to the ground in a timely manner. Communications is a critical bottleneck …
