Antisocial Personality Disorder/ Psychopathy With An Increase Of Violent Crime, Meagan Lym
Antisocial Personality Disorder/ Psychopathy With An Increase Of Violent Crime, Meagan Lym
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
The work below is other research conducted in the same area, does having antisocial personality disorders or psychopathy make a person more violent. The study will include those who have committed a violent crime; to narrow the pool more, these individuals will be serving life sentences or be on death row. The individuals will have a rigorous interview to go through that will establish what traits they carry and if they have any specific disorders. The individuals’ files will then be analyzed. We are looking for what kind of crime, the nature of the crime, the violence used during the …
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Latinx Community In Cache Valley, Utah., Jasmine Morales, Virginia Hernandez
The Impact Of Covid-19 On The Latinx Community In Cache Valley, Utah., Jasmine Morales, Virginia Hernandez
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
The purpose of this investigation is to learn about the Latinx experience with Covid-19 in Cache Valley, Utah. For this research, we interviewed twelve Latinx families who explained in detail their perceived and conceived notions of Covid-19, and how they survived compounded social disadvantages such as fear of unemployment, inability to pay rent/mortgage, eviction, lack of safeguards in their jobs, worry about medical costs, isolation, and fear of deportation. After the interviews, we identified five interconnected aspects that all families shared: 1) Fears and stigma about Covid-19; 2) Economic distress and how they received support from the community and government …

Halotolerant Rhizosphere Bacteria: Isolation Of Rhizosphere Bacteria From Native Utah Plant Ceanothus Velutinus, Alyssa Nielsen
Halotolerant Rhizosphere Bacteria: Isolation Of Rhizosphere Bacteria From Native Utah Plant Ceanothus Velutinus, Alyssa Nielsen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Increasing incidences of drought forced farmers to use the secondary, degraded water for irrigation. These water sources are rich in salt concentrations. This project has started with the hopes of finding bacteria from the rhizosphere of a native to Utah plant, Ceanothus velutinus, that helps the plant survive the saltier conditions of Utah. The rhizosphere, a layer of soil attached to the roots of a plant, contains microorganisms that may contribute to the plants' abiotic and biotic stress resistance. These microorganisms are known as Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR). The roots and rhizosphere samples were collected from Tony Grove in …
Gender & Social Support In Young Adults, Sierra Howe, Amy Jensen, Kaitlin Welsh, Jalena Warner
Gender & Social Support In Young Adults, Sierra Howe, Amy Jensen, Kaitlin Welsh, Jalena Warner
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
The effect of social support on mental health outcomes is important in understanding how best to address mental health issues in the general population. Young adulthood is a time of extreme stress and change which can often be a trigger for mental illness to occur. Previous research indicates gender as a major determinant for mental health outcomes, especially when exploring help-seeking behaviors. While women are more likely to seek support for mental illness, men are much more likely to self-medicate rather than seek help. Trans and gender diverse individuals were much less likely to receive social support for mental illness, …
Re-Envisioning Transforming Communities Initiative, Alyssa Cronin
Re-Envisioning Transforming Communities Initiative, Alyssa Cronin
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Have you ever seen a large problem you wished we could just solve already? There are many: poverty, homelessness, racism, hunter. The list goes on. Huge issues like these require people to step up to the plate and dismantle oppressive systems and construct better ones. Social workers have been doing this since their conception; however, engagement in these areas have been dwindling over the past decades. TCI was born in 2014 to help combat this by training the next generation of civically engaged social workers while conducting research and working with communities in Utah to create change. It is now …
Microaggressions Experienced By Lgbtq Individuals In Cjclds Contexts, Jane Bell
Microaggressions Experienced By Lgbtq Individuals In Cjclds Contexts, Jane Bell
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Relative to heterosexual and cisgender individuals, sexual and gender minorities (SGM) have elevated rates of minority stress and heightened chances of health problems, including mental health disorders and suicidal ideation. This process can be exacerbated in a conservative Christian religious setting, such as in the context of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (CJCLDS). Although CJCLDS doctrine embraces love for all, LGBTQ+ individuals experience discrimination, sometimes through subtle verbal/nonverbal barbs called microaggressions. There is limited research on this intersection of experience, which makes it difficult to understand how to help the individuals being adversely affected. This study seeks …
Trauma: Forced Sterilizations Of Latina Women In The United States, Lisset Delgado, Wystan Hampton
Trauma: Forced Sterilizations Of Latina Women In The United States, Lisset Delgado, Wystan Hampton
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
The purpose of our research is to understand the history of how American society has viewed Latina women and the oppression they have faced mainly due to forced sterilizations. Between the 1930s and 1970s, Latinos in the United States were forced to undergo sterilizations which have been a large contributor to the cause of multiple underlying mental health issues. Although the book Taína, written by Ernesto Quiñónez, is considered fiction, we understand that many of Quiñónez's stories within the book are based on actual events that took place in his life. As a result, his literary work will be …
The Impact Of China's Recent Economic Growth Has Had On The Environment: Challenging The Assumption That In Order To Protect The Environment We Must Sacrifice Development., Mckay Overton
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Pollution is a major issue in China effecting both the health and environment of the Chinese people. Since its rapid rise in economic and technological development, China has become one of the global leaders in business and technology. Conversely, China has also become one of the global leaders in the amount of pollution it creates. Every day, large amounts of coal and fossil fuels are burned. There are few regulations to protect the environment, and even fewer that are actually enforced. High levels of pollution cause high rates of cancer as well as high rates of lung and heart issues …
Are Laws And Regulation Necessary For Microtransactions And Loot Boxes?, Zachary Jamison
Are Laws And Regulation Necessary For Microtransactions And Loot Boxes?, Zachary Jamison
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
As more video games are advertised and released, they include more uses and forms of microtransactions and gambling. Microtransactions are where you can spend money for a virtual currency inside the game that you can then use to buy in game items and cosmetics. Through the use of advertising these skins, cosmetics, and other items, they prey on the desires of children that want something that looks “cool” or “amazing.” Indulging in these circumstances can lead into gambling problems and can even cause mental health issues. While adults can also suffer from these issues, it is more prevalent in emerging …
Effects Of The Checks, Andrew Stott
Effects Of The Checks, Andrew Stott
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of people have lost thousands of dollars, and some much more. As a result, the government issued aid in the form of stimulus checks, with the intention to stimulate the economy and compensate for money lost. The government is not adding value to the economy, but merely moving it around, and in many cases simply making it worse. The checks allude to an even bigger issue: that of universal income and welfare checks. Although these things may be helpful to the individual, they are ineffective and harmful to the economy because they …
Identification And Isolation Of Halotolerant Endophytes In Ceanothus Velutinus May Lead To Plant Health In Saline Conditions, Katherine Hewitt
Identification And Isolation Of Halotolerant Endophytes In Ceanothus Velutinus May Lead To Plant Health In Saline Conditions, Katherine Hewitt
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Plant-microbe relations are integral to plant survival and crop productivity. Part of a plant’s biosphere are endophytes, microbes found between the cells of a plant. Endophytes can be beneficial to help a plant cope with abiotic stressors such as salinity. In Utah, our soils are high in salinity due to topography and climate. Climate change has increased soil salinity across the world, and water availability is becoming scarcer leading agriculture to use more saline sources to irrigate. Thus, salt is a concern for farmers. We aim to identify halotolerant endophytes from Ceanothus velutinus, Snowbrush which is native to the …

Effectiveness Of Cannabidiol And Resveratrol Against Diesel Exhaust Particle-Induced Lung Cell Cytotoxicity, Emily Brothersen
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Environmental air pollution poses a significant health risk to individuals across the world. Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), a major component of air pollution, have been shown to cause lung damage leading to cancer, respiratory infections, and premature death. Antioxidants, such as resveratrol, have previously demonstrated protective properties against DEP-induced cytotoxicity and reactive oxygen species. Cannabinoids extracted from hemp species have also been found to have powerful antioxidant properties, though these properties have not been thoroughly explored. In this study, A549 human lung carcinoma cells were used as a cellular model to determine the effectiveness of cannabinoids’ antioxidant properties against DEP-induced …

A Case For Greek Life, Jett Hawk
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Since the late 19th Century, fraternities and sororities have been unique college organizations. Today however, Greek Life’s existence is being threatened by problems that it has created. Sexual assault, member harm, and destructive recruitment techniques are prevalent in the community. These are the primary issues raised by the Abolish Greek Life movement. On the other hand, Greek Life has been a great community from which individuals can build lifelong friends and develop personally and professionally, as many have experienced. My research investigated women’s, LGBTQIA+ students’, working class’s, and fraternity members’ perspectives to gain insight on problems, solutions, and the future …

Data from the Utah Climate Center shows that the 3rd yearly quartile has the highest levels of airborne ammonia due to the high levels of fertilizer use and livestock emissions in the farming industry in Cache Valley. After data analysis, there seems to be a connection …
A Method To Assess Response Inhibition During A Balance Recovery Step, Molly Rowley
A Method To Assess Response Inhibition During A Balance Recovery Step, Molly Rowley
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Background: Correlations between falls and executive function tests, particularly those tests emphasizing inhibitory control, suggests that the ability to suppress automatic, but unwanted action, is important in fall prevention. Response inhibition has been a topic of considerable interest in the cognitive neuroscience community for many decades, bringing with it, the development of techniques that could be used to inform assessment of reactive balance. Research question: Can we apply a method used in traditional cognitive testing - the stop signal task - to measure response inhibition in a speeded, balance recovery task? Methods: Twenty healthy, young adults completed a novel reactive …

Pcos: What They Should Be Telling You, Gracie Leavitt
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
It is speculated that out of 14 million women in the United States, 70% are being affected by Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and yet it continues to be one of the most misdiagnosed or undiagnosed diseases. PCOS is a condition that stems from the endocrine system and is often determined by cysts in the ovaries, but studies have proven that that isn’t always the case nor the determining diagnostic criteria. Women aren’t given enough information when being diagnosed with PCOS, nor substantial treatment options. In a world with incredible medical advances and research happening continuously, PCOS seems to be lacking in …

Universal Healthcare: Is It The Future?, Izzy Wappett
Universal Healthcare: Is It The Future?, Izzy Wappett
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
About 8.5% of the United States population has no form of healthcare. The rest of the population either has a form of public or private insurance given to them by the government, private insurers, or employers. But there are countries worldwide that have systems where every citizen has healthcare. This is called universal healthcare. Universal Healthcare has shown to be more effective because it portrays healthcare as less of a privilege and more of a right to all. But many Americans view this kind of system as controlling and a system that takes away your freedom. But as studies and …
Effect Of Basal Diet And Black Raspberry Supplementation On Gene Biomarkers Of "Leaky Gut" In Mouse Model Of Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer, Eliza Stewart
Fall Student Research Symposium 2021
Colorectal cancer is currently the third leading cause of cancer death in the world. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases significantly in individuals who suffer from colitis, which is inflammation of the colon lining, seen in Irritable Bowel Disease. The term “leaky gut” is often used to describe increased intestinal permeability and is closely related to colitis. Leaky gut is associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, which can occur through diet. This dysbiosis leads to pro-longed inflammation and affects genes that encode for proteins involved in the tight junctions between cells. Compromised intestinal integrity allows for translocation of …

Glycosylation is an effective way to improve the water solubility of natural products. In this work, a novel glycosyltransferase gene (BbGT) was discovered from Beauveria bassiana ATCC 7159 and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified enzyme was functionally characterized through in vitro enzymatic reactions as a UDP-glucosyltransferase, converting quercetin to five monoglucosylated and one diglucosylated products. The optimal pH and temperature for BbGT are 35 ℃ and 8.0, respectively. The activity of BbGT was stimulated by Ca2+, Mg2+, and Mn2+, but inhibited by Zn2+. BbGT enzyme is flexible and can glycosylate a variety of substrates such as curcumin, …
