Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For A Child With Misophonia: A Case Study, Julie M. Petersen, Michael P. Twohig Sep 2022

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy For A Child With Misophonia: A Case Study, Julie M. Petersen, Michael P. Twohig

Psychology Faculty Publications

Misophonia, a condition involving hypersensitivity, anger, and/or disgust in response to specific noises (e.g., chewing, tapping), is highly underresearched in children. Several case studies point towards the utility of cognitive behavioral therapy and related treatments (e.g., acceptance and commitment therapy [ACT]). ACT presents a particularly promising option, as it focuses on building psychological flexibility in response to difficult internal experiences, rather than trying to remove or change them (e.g., responding effectively to irritation provoked by chewing). The present case study describes “Kelly” (pseudonym), a 12-year-old girl with moderately severe misophonia symptoms, who received a 16-session course of ACT for misophonia. …

Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesat Radiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy Sep 2022

Adaptive Calibration Of Cubesat Radiometer Constellations, John Bradburn, Mustafa Aksoy

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

“Adaptive Calibration of CubeSat Radiometer Constellations” (ACCURACy) is a novel, constellation-level calibration framework developed to address the challenges in calibrating constellations of CubeSat radiometers. CubeSats are smaller than conventional monolithic systems, and so while cheaper and easier to develop and deploy, a lack of sufficient radiation shielding and thermal mass results in gain fluctuations due to the increased sensitivity to ambient conditions. Weight, cost, and power requirements also mean that CubeSats need to rely on vicarious calibration measurements, rather than external blackbody references, which cannot be collected frequently. ACCURACy is a multi-module framework which uses onboard telemetry data to cluster …

The resolution of both instruments is 57m at nadir and their swath is about 1000 km. TRISHNA’s TIR and VSWIR instruments will be extensively calibrated and characterized in on-ground facilities to ensure that their performance will …

Evaluation Of Hydrograph Separation Techniques With Uncertain End-Member Composition, Eileen Page Lukens, Bethany T. Neilson, Kenneth H. Williams, Janice Brahney Sep 2022

Evaluation Of Hydrograph Separation Techniques With Uncertain End-Member Composition, Eileen Page Lukens, Bethany T. Neilson, Kenneth H. Williams, Janice Brahney

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Hydrograph separation is one of many approaches used to analyse shifts in source water contributions to stream flow resulting from climate change in remote watersheds. Understanding these shifts is vital, as shifts in source water contributions to a stream can shape water management decisions. Because remote watersheds are often inaccessible and have poorly characterized contributing water sources, or end-members, it is critical to understand the implications of using different hydrograph separation techniques in these data-limited environments. To explore the uncertainty associated with different techniques, results from two hydrograph separation techniques, mass balance and principle component analysis, were compared using 3 …

Accepting Uncomfortable Emotions: Learning From Car Dashboards And Manure, Jacob D. Gossner, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Tasha Howard

All Current Publications

Agricultural producers can face many stressors, such as long hours coupled with challenging, unpredictable conditions, which can give rise to challenging thoughts and feelings at times. Phrases you may hear in modern culture as you approach difficulty may be "pull yourself together," "quit worrying," or "get over it." However, these aren't the best processes for working through hard emotions. Cultivating acceptance is a way to combat traditional rationalization and work through emotions.

Social Predictors Of Doctoral Student Mental Health And Well-Being, Feng Zhang, Kaylee Litson, David F. Feldon Sep 2022

Social Predictors Of Doctoral Student Mental Health And Well-Being, Feng Zhang, Kaylee Litson, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Graduate students' mental health and well-being is a prominent concern across various disciplines. However, early predictors of mental health and well-being in graduate education, specifically doctoral education, have rarely been studied. The present study evaluated both the underlying latent classification of individuals' mental well-being and predictors of those classifications. Results estimated two latent classes of students' mental health and well-being: one class with generally high levels of mental well-being and one with lower levels of mental well-being. Regression analyses showed that mentoring in the second year of doctoral study, certainty of choice in the thrid year, and both academic development …

Responding To Financial Stress For Agricultural Producers And Couples, Jacob D. Gossner, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Tasha Howard Sep 2022

Responding To Financial Stress For Agricultural Producers And Couples, Jacob D. Gossner, Elizabeth B. Fauth, Tasha Howard

All Current Publications

Finances are a necessary component of running an agricultural production and with an uncertain economy, drought conditions, and rising costs, financial stress is increasingly common. Although financial stress is linked with poor individual and relationship outcomes, research suggests that there are effective ways to manage financial stress so that it does not reduce personal or relationship well-being. We review the body's response to stressors and how to respond rather than react to stress. We present specific strategies couples can use to navigate financial stress together. We include ideas for practical application for individuals seeking to improve the way they manage …

Ungulate Herbivores As Drivers Of Aspen Recruitment And Understory Composition Throughout Arid Montane Landscapes, Elizabeth S. Reikowski, Tyler Refsland, J. Hall Cushman Sep 2022

Ungulate Herbivores As Drivers Of Aspen Recruitment And Understory Composition Throughout Arid Montane Landscapes, Elizabeth S. Reikowski, Tyler Refsland, J. Hall Cushman

Aspen Bibliography

Herbivory by wild and domestic ungulates can influence tree recruitment and understory forest communities throughout the world. Herbivore-driven declines in tree recruitment have been observed for quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), a foundation species whose health and management is recognized as a critical priority throughout much of its range. Livestock fencing is commonly used to promote aspen regeneration, but its effectiveness is rarely assessed, especially across large spatial scales. Using a livestock-reduction experiment, we evaluated the effects of ungulate herbivory on aspen in the Great Basin and southern Cascades, an expansive and environmentally heterogeneous region where aspen faces the …

The Current Status Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) In Iran: A Systematic Narrative Review, Mehdi Akbari, Mohammad Seydavi, Carter H. Davis, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. Twohig, Elahe Zamani Sep 2022

The Current Status Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) In Iran: A Systematic Narrative Review, Mehdi Akbari, Mohammad Seydavi, Carter H. Davis, Michael E. Levin, Michael P. Twohig, Elahe Zamani

Psychology Faculty Publications

Research on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and its application to various clinical issues have proliferated across the world. Despite very active clusters of ACT research occurring worldwide, the science that is disseminated through the literature does not fully reflect this scope and diversity, with Iran serving as a prime example of this issue. To increase awareness of ACT research findings in Iran, we conducted a systematic review of 110 randomized trials and extracted data on key study features. RCTs were identified, suggesting the efficacy of ACT in Iran for a wide range of clinical areas, including anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive …

A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan Sep 2022

A Practicum In Behavioral Economics, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

A Practicum in Behavioral Economics is a practice-based textbook covering the broad field of behavioral economics. Because behavioral economics is foremost a "test-and-learn" field of scientific inquiry that evolves according to experimental outcomes, so too should students test-and-learn. As such, the book's primary goal is to help students experience behavioral economics through participation in the same experiments and games that serve as the foundations for, and shape the contours of, the field. With the help of this book students learn behavioral economics firsthand, and in the process create their own experiences. They learn about themselves - about how they make …

Toward Deeper Understanding And Wide-Scale Implementation Of Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions, Sophia D'Agostino, Ana D. Dueñas, Alice Bravo, Kelsie Tyson, Diondra Straiton, Giovanna L. Salvatore, Cressida Pacia, Melanie Pellecchia

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

Naturalistic Developmental Behavior Interventions (NDBIs) have a strong and growing evidence base. Yet, NDBIs are not implemented on a wide scale within early intervention programs for children on the autism spectrum. Potential reasons for the slow adoption of NDBIs likely stem from the differing theoretical orientations of behavioral and developmental sciences from which NDBI are derived, and a lack of training, knowledge, and support for implementing NDBIs within the behavior analytic community. In support of efforts to promote wide-scale implementation of NDBIs, we clarify their common features, discuss possible misconceptions, offer reasons why NDBIs should be widely implemented, and provide …

An inextricable link exists between humans and pollinators, with benefits that include ecosystem health and function and human food security. Bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles are responsible for most the world's pollination services. Considering the mounting scientific evidence denoting global pollinator declines, there is a critical need to prioritize pollinators and the essential services they provide. This fact sheet provides information about integrated pest and pollinator management (IPPM), which goes beyond integrated pest management (IPM) to include proactive, preventive measures that consider pollinators as well as pests in horticulture management.

A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews Aug 2022

A Network Flow Approach For Constellation Planning, Skylar A. Cox, Greg N. Droge, John H. Humble, Konnor D. Andrews

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A graph-based network flow approach to constellation planning is presented that respects spacecraft resources and mission constraints to arrive at a preliminary operational schedule. The method discretizes task fulfillment opportunity windows into graph nodes and then adds edges based on feasibility of transition between these opportunities, either by slew maneuvers or extended-time task fulfillment during downlink operations. Intelligent graph pruning is applied to improve computation performance and provide a versatile planning capability with a minimal impact on the resulting solution. A network flow formulation allows for a simultaneous search for spacecraft plans using a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP). The …

Validating Students' Diverse Identities, Erin Hughes Aug 2022

Validating Students' Diverse Identities, Erin Hughes

Exploring How We Teach

  • Recognizing and appreciating students’ identities is important for learning and feelings of academic empowerment.
  • The ways in which we can amplify students feeling validated is by being responsive to their needs and respecting who they are both inside and outside the classroom.
  • The ways students may feel invalidated are by perpetuating the power dynamics between student and teacher, disregarding students’ mental health, and engaging in inflexible standards.
  • Students may feel more able to take on the difficulties of academia when we help them take a strengths-based approach to who they are.
