Foreward: Recognizing the need for training of individuals to meet the rapidly rising problems connected with water resources development, Utah State University, with National Science Foundation support, organized a Summer Institute in Water Resources for college teachers. it was hoped that participants carefully selected from all regions of the country would receive additional insight and stimulation to improve and enlarge water resources training programs at their own institutions. Thus, the accelerated dissemination of such knowledge on a national scale could be facilitated. Realizing further that the key to a successful institute of this nature lay in the excellence of its …

America has been known throughout its history as a land of plenty . Enough food to feed a rapidly increasing population has been produced continuously . Scientific progress has made it possible for fewer farm workers to produce larger amounts of food both from increased acreage and increased yield per acre . With today's nationwide network of distribution , these foods have been made available throughout all sections of the country . Modern science and industry have taken over many of the processing duties of the homemaker and have done it on a less expensive and a much safer scale. …
Biological Studies Of Three Species Of Cuterebra (Diptera: Cuterebridae) From Northern Utah, Charles L. Graham
Biological Studies Of Three Species Of Cuterebra (Diptera: Cuterebridae) From Northern Utah, Charles L. Graham
Biology
Flies of the genus Cuterebra are found in the New World only. They are parasitic bots of rodents and lagomorphs as larvae and have been studied for about one and one-half centuries. During this time very little has been found out about the biology of most of the species, even hosts are still unknown for many of them.

The Genetics Of Abnormal Head Morphogenesis In Drosophila Melanogaster, With Special Reference To Eyelessness, Homoeosis, Penetrance, Asymmetry, And The "Fourth" Instar, James Wesley Edwards
Biology
During experiments involving the addition of copper sulfate to the food medium (Turner, 1959) some files from the tu150/Cy strain of Drosophila melanogaster exhibited a structural eye abnormality. By inbreeding those flies a new mutant stock was developed. Edwards and Gardner (1962) designated the stock as eyes-reduced and located the major genetic factor (eyr) in the right arm of the third chromosome. The eyes-reduced stock possesses characteristics which are challenging to current theories in genetics and development; the purpose of this investigation was to thoroughly study those characteristics.

The Use Of Amprolium In Controlling Coccidiosis In Calves, Ronald Fayer
Biology
Bovine coccidiosis is an economically important disease in the United States. The Agriculture Research Service (1954) reported that the annual loss caused by coccidiosis in cattle in the United States amounts to $10,000,000. Fitzgerald (1963) found in a survey of losses of calves under 1 year of age in the west northcentral and the western United States that approximately $11,000,000 is lost yearly because of mortality and morbidity from coccidiosis.

Histochemical Investigations Of The Effects Of Fluoride On Dehydrogenase Enzymes Of Pelargoniom Zonale, Clyde J. Hurst
Histochemical Investigations Of The Effects Of Fluoride On Dehydrogenase Enzymes Of Pelargoniom Zonale, Clyde J. Hurst
Biology
The industrialization of the Intermountain West has brought with it the by products of industry. Of these by products, fluoride is of particular interest and importance, because of its toxicity to both plants and animals at low concentrations. There is a wide range of variation in susceptibility of different plants, but gladiolus, prune, apricot, and peach among others are very sensitive to fluoride in concentrations as low as 0.02 to 0.05 ppb (Katz, 1956).

Coccidiosis Of Cattle, Datus M. Hammod
Faculty Honor Lectures
The disease known as coccidiosis occurs in many domestic and wild animals. It is of great importance in chickens, in which coccidiosis is one of the chief causes of losses to the producer. In cattle the disease was estimated by Fitzgerald in 1962' to cause an . annual loss of $3,500,000 in calves under one year of age in the 11 western states and $7,500,000 in the seven west north-central states. In making this estimate Fitzgerald calculated that 90 percent of all calves are infected by coccidia, and that the average loss amounted to 75 cents per head on all …

Molybdenum-L-Histidine Complexes, Jiing-Yun Lee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
L- Histidine is a very important amino acid and is widely distributed in living systems. In the growth and multiplication of animal cells, it was found that L-histidine is one of the amino acids that must be present. From the kinetic studies of certain enzymes such as chymotrypsin and ribonuclease, it has been proposed that the imidazolyl group of the histidine residue may serve as the basic electron donor, and that the histidine residue in some cases may be the active site of the enzyme. The interactions of L-histidine with heavy metal ions, including Ni (II) (1), Zn (II) (1, …

Ionizing radiation from natural occurring radionuclides and cosmic rays has always been a part of man's environment, but at such low levels as to have had virtually no effect. However, with the advent of the atomic age and the advancement of nuclear technology, background activity has measurably increased all over the world. Fallout from nuclear weapons testing, wastes from nuclear reactors, and wastes from the milling of radioactive ores have all contributed to this increase. Due to this increase, many ecosystems and their individual components are now subjected to radiation levels as high as a million times natural background. What …

A Study Of Thailand's Balance Of Trade 1953-1962, Suchin Worawongwasu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
International trade theory suggests that trade can be advantageous to the industrial as well as to the underdeveloped countries. For the latter, specialization and exchange brings about an increase in total productions.
Thailand, an underdeveloped country, has for the past decade experienced an unfavorable balance of trade. A primary producing country, Thailand principally exports rice, rubber, tin, and teak. Her principal imports are manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment, mineral fuels, lubricants and chemicals.
The thesis is intended to investigate the causes of this adverse balance of trade. Thailand's four principal exports accounted for an average of 74.7 percent of …

The Economic Contribution Of The Out-Of-State Student To The Economy Of Utah, Joseph Thomas Markowski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Is the out-of-state college student in Utah paying his own way? Many legislative debates within recent years have centered themselves upon this controversial question without obtaining any definite answers. Articles have been written both pro and con concerning the amount of financial responsibility in higher education that should be assumed by governmental bodies, i.e.: should the state institutions be supported more by taxes or should a greater portion of its costs be covered by student fees with the possible result that fewer students will attend because of higher fees.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Riboflavin, 6,7-dimethyl-9-(D-1'-ribityl) isoalloxazine, has been studied extensively by workers in many fields of interest. Because of its almost universal occurrence in plants and its requirement by most animals as a vitamin, it is of interest to both the botanist and the zoologist. It is also of interest to the photochemist and its photo chemistry is currently being studied by several groups (27, 35, 47, 49). In addition riboflavin has been implicated in the photo inactivation of indole-acetic acid (16) and 2,4-D (20). It is also thought to be involved in the processes of bioluminescence (33, 48) and phototropism (17). At …

The various activities associated with the provision of food for feeding of the family traditionally have been functions of the home . One of the major enterprises of the homemaker in past years was to plan , produce or purchase , preserve , and prepare food daily for the family. The role of the homemaker today has changed from one of producer to one of purchaser. Hence, at least weekly, the selection of food at the market place involves not only the best use of her time but wise expenditure of her food budget. The market is changing so rapidly …

The Role Of Cooperative Societies In The Economic Development Of India, A. M. Rananavare
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The idea of cooperation is not new to man. It is as old as man himself. Cooperatives are an almost universal form of organization today found in practically all countries and used by people in many ways. The cooperatives are formed to secure low cost credit, to purchase supplies and equipment for farming and household needs, to market products, even to secure many services, like electric power, irrigation, health, and insurance. Cooperatives can be used in many ways to benefit people in the everyday needs of life.
The meaning of cooperation is that isolated and powerless individuals can, by combining …

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the event which hurled the United States into the throes of the Second World War, convinced many military strategists that precautions should be taken to guard the West Canst against possible invasion. The erection of a formidable defense system along the coast was complicated by the fact that 110,000 Japanese lived in Washington, Oregon, and California, a situation that could be hardly ignored by a suspicious public who rapidly formed the opinion that most Japanese-Americans harbored disloyal attitudes and would prove to be a menace to the war effort unless measures were immediately taken …

Degenerative disease of old age such as atherosclerosis and cerebral hemorrhage appear to be related to abnormal lipid metabolism. Many investigators have studied the role of steroid hormones on lipid and cholesterol metabolism in rats and chickens. The results have consistantly indicated that both corticosteroids and sex hormones play an important role in the regulation of lipid and cholesterol metabolism, in vivo. Serum cholesterol values in humans have been decreased by estrogens, while androgen administration tends to increase circulating cholesterol. Estrogens have been shown to decrease circulating cholesterol and prevent cholesterol-induced coronary atherosclerosis in chickens. A study of the …

Attitudes are usually defined as feelings for or against something (Remmers and Gage, 1955). They are very important in the lives of people because they help determine future success in an individual's life. Because of them one works to get the things he wants, one votes for or against certain issues, one joins a cause, opposes something, or attempts to influence others.
Effects Of Hydro-Cooling, Chemicals, And Packaging Treatments On Refrigerated-Life And Quality Of Sweet Cherries And In Vitro Effects Of Chemicals On Selected Fungi Responsible For Fruit Deterioration, Joseph Yungsheng Do
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As the population tends to urbanize, the potential consumer market of fresh produce becomes distant from the producing farm. This distance brings to growers and handlers the problems of how to keep their fresh products unspoiled after harvest and during transit period of shipping, and how they can be delivered to the specified destination without substantial deterioration. It is the common interest of fruit growers, shippers, wholesalers, and retailers that the shelf-life of fresh fruit be prolonged to increase sales.
Sweet cherries are one of the important fruit crops in Utah. Being highly perishable, fresh sweet cherries have relatively short …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For over forty years ability grouping has been of professional concern to educators in the United States (Reisner, 1936). There have been fundamental changes in educational theory and practice during that time, one of which is the recognition that educational practices must adjust to individual differences. The interpretation of "equal opportunity" in education has gradually changed from meaning the same methods, standards, and course content for all children, to meaning the full opportunity for each child to develop his own potential in a school program suited to his individual capacities and needs.
The interpersonal relationships and social development of school …

Parent Education In A Cooperative Nursery School, Owen William Cahoon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Parent education has existed for as long as one parent has attempted to help another, and for as long as we have records. To what extent it has served its purpose has not been fully established. Only the future will fully tell how successful parent education programs have been among those who participated in them, because the final measure of success of a parent education program is the degree to which it contributes to effective family relationships and to favorable growth and development of children in the home.
Parent education sometimes is defined as the use of educational techniques to …
