Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson May 1966

Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson

Faculty Honor Lectures

Several preceding honor lectures have dealt with water. The title of a recent one, "Water and Man," by Dr. Sterling Taylor closely resembles the one for this paper. Dr. Taylor's paper dealt primarily with the physical science of water. This one will consider the nature of the use of water by man and the technological and institutional structure related to that use. Thus there should be no serious overlap. My friends in the social sciences may be surprised, too, to find that somehow this lecture has spilled over into their territory. But engineering is the implementation of science and technology. …

Herbert B. Maw As Governor Of Utah, John C. Setmire

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Herbert B. Maw, like many other Utahn’s, is a self-made man, a poor boy who sold newspapers from the age of ten to fifteen, and worked nights to put himself through college. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1923 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree, and in 1926 he obtained a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University. Maw received his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1927 from Northwestern University, and in the same year he was elected to the Utah Senate on the Democratic ticket. In 1934 Maw ran for the United States Senate and lost the election, however, in …

A Descriptive Analysis Of Eight Remedial Reading Students In The Sevier District Schools, Doris P. Tuft May 1966

A Descriptive Analysis Of Eight Remedial Reading Students In The Sevier District Schools, Doris P. Tuft

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Authorities have variously estimated the number of children with a reading disability to be between ten and fifteen percent of the total school population.1,2,3 Formerly, many children who had reading difficulties perhaps left school at an early age. Also, many children who might have had reading problems perhaps remained undetected before widespread group testing was initiated. Today, with the high premium placed upon high school and even college achievement, an education is, so to speak, a prerequisite to adult success. With reading unique in its being both a subject area and a tool necessary for the mastery of other …

A Study Of The Extent Of Extramural Competition For Girls In The High Schools Of Utah, Betty Ann Dance May 1966

A Study Of The Extent Of Extramural Competition For Girls In The High Schools Of Utah, Betty Ann Dance

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Physical education is included as a part of the curriculum in most secondary schools throughout the United States. Since it is usually required for at least one year, and possibly more in some schools, it is important to design the program properly. A well-rounded physical education program is established to include three phases: the instructional phase, the intramural phase, and the extramural phase.

An Individualized Developmental Reading Program For Junior High School, Faye Merrims Zeller May 1966

An Individualized Developmental Reading Program For Junior High School, Faye Merrims Zeller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The majority of high school dropouts read below the grade level at which they dropped out; nearly half read at or below the sixth-grade level. Students who " ... learn to read better are usually able to do better work in their subjects of study." Major authorities concur that maturity of reading achievement is crucial to success in college. Th e student whose reading instruction ceased with elementary school may find he is ". . . no better reader at the end of senior high school than he was when he entered high school." Developmental reading for all types of …

Considerations Influencing Utah Farmers In Their Decisions To Produce Sugar Beets, Surjit Singh Sidhu May 1966

Considerations Influencing Utah Farmers In Their Decisions To Produce Sugar Beets, Surjit Singh Sidhu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sugar has been an important commodity down through the ages. In the present day world, there is hardly any corner of the world where sugar is not consumed in one form or another.

Wide variation in per capita consumption of sugar exists among nations. Sugar consumption appears to be related to income level. Sugar in the United States is considered an item of necessity, and its consumption is relatively stable. This is evidenced by low price and income elasticities of demand for sugar which were -0.28 and 0.27 respectively for the period 1921-1956 (1). Consumers thus consume about the same …

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson May 1966

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Children afflicted with speech disorders represent the largest single group of exceptional children. The numbers of speech defectives reach between 2 and 2½ million or about 5% of the population (Johnson et al., 1956). Newman (1961) has disputed this claim and has stressed the difference to be made between speech differences and handicapping conditions:

It can be confidently stated that 5% of the population categorized speech handicapped, have speech differences of such a nature that the differences can be pointed out, recorded, classified, or quantified in some reliable manner. But that does not necessarily make the conditions handicapping or impairing. …

Graduate Recital, Valorus D. Lindsay May 1966

Graduate Recital, Valorus D. Lindsay

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The inclusion of such a large number and variety of songs and arias in a vocal recital necessitates a separate discussion of each composer involved and his contributions to vocal literature. Accordingly, the writer has compiled this report into sections dealing with the composers. A brief biographical sketch of each composer has been given and an analysis of the music performed in the recital has been made .

The personal translations of the writer are included with each song written in a foreign language . To a singer not familiar with the language, the meaning of a piece is as …

An Educational Study To Determine The Nutritional Value And Acceptability Of Dry Milk Among The Navajo, June C. Larson May 1966

An Educational Study To Determine The Nutritional Value And Acceptability Of Dry Milk Among The Navajo, June C. Larson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One day at the Intermountain Indian School, when a package of government surplus dry milk seemed to defy opening, a senior Navajo student offered her assistance anx easily opened the many boxes of milk. Upon inquiry, she said that she had opened many a box, especially in the springtime. She went on to say that most of their dry milk was used in the spring to feed baby lambs.

Later this same student told how her baby sister had died during the winter from something. The sister just seemed to get sick and then died. Could her death have been …

Nutrition In Thailand, Methee Larptavee May 1966

Nutrition In Thailand, Methee Larptavee

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Thailand is located in souteast Asia between Burman, Laos, and Cambodia. It has a long coast line as one strip of land reaches out into the sea. It has a warm climate with much rain, especially in the south. There are 27 million people in the area of 200,000 square miles. Rice ranks number one in the Thailand diet. Next to rice is fish, both from fresh water and from the sea.

A nutritional survey was first made in Thailand in Bang Chan Village in 1952-54, in connection with the Cornell-Thailand project. Since the results covered only a small segment …

Team Teaching In Secondary School Science: Techniqeus In Large And Small Group Instruction And The Use Of Para-Professionals, Berlin C. Jensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In team teaching there are considerations that are basic to conducting a successful learning experience. In large and small group instruction certain techniques are used that can reduce the tension and anxiety of the team teacher. Just how these techniques are used will vary for the individual team teacher. How to secure and use para-professionals are also basic considerations in a team teaching program. According to this survey certain techniques can be effectively used in large groups (1). The school plant itself has undergone a remarkable change, Newly constructed schools can now accommodate larger and more effective classes, or the …

An Exploration Of Test Taking Strategy With Sixth Grade Students, Mary Bates May 1966

An Exploration Of Test Taking Strategy With Sixth Grade Students, Mary Bates

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The present study was an attempt to evaluate the benefits of certain cues in reaching correct answers to test questions given to sixth grade students. While it seems reasonable to assume that test-taking strategy is not as well developed in sixth grade children as in older students, this study was intended to discover if test-taking strategy would be apparent to a measurable degree at this age level. Before such an observation could be undertaken, a technique had to be devised to measure the behavior in question (in this case the use of cues). The technique used was in the form …

An Evaluation Of The Small Business Investment Company Program, It's History And Development, With Emphasis On The Utah Sbic Industry, J. G. Dursteler May 1966

An Evaluation Of The Small Business Investment Company Program, It's History And Development, With Emphasis On The Utah Sbic Industry, J. G. Dursteler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Does the small business concern in this country have access to sufficient amounts of growth capital? For the past several years there has been much controversy concerning this question. Articles have been written both pro and con voicing opinions as to whether small businesses are being discriminated against in the acquisition of long-term loans to finance growth and business expansion. The majority of the written information on this subject appears to support the theory that too many small business firms are under-capitalized and the sources of long-term investment and growth funds are seriously limited to the small businessman. The Small …

In Search Of The Elizabethan Woman, Melba Mcdonald Burrows May 1966

In Search Of The Elizabethan Woman, Melba Mcdonald Burrows

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The modern woman, who analyzes every detail of her existence by means of the written word, finds the Elizabethan woman an enigma that defies a satisfactory solution. She received the finest education available in her day, and she lived during some of the stirring events in English history; yet she has left us almost no written record of her personal life and her attitude toward the world she knew. We catch glimpses of her materialistic life in the detailed accounts in which she recorded the financial transactions affecting her husband’s properties, but we do not know how she regarded the …

The Initiation Of Infection By Dna From Bacteriophage Lambda, Gerald D. Elseth May 1966

The Initiation Of Infection By Dna From Bacteriophage Lambda, Gerald D. Elseth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Deoxyribonucleic acid isolated from bacteriophage λ can infect Escherichia coli K12 in the presence of adsorbed helper phage (Kaiser and Hogness, 1960; Kaiser, 1962). The manner in which λ DNA enters the cell and the possible role of helper phage in the penetration process is still not clear. Kinetic studies conducted in this laboratory during the initial stages of infection by λ DNA demonstrate a requirement for helper function during the penetration of an infectious molecule. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this study.

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson May 1966

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is designed to examine and evaluate the basic beliefs and actions of the John Birch Society. It is not intended to determine the proper location for the Society on the American political spectrum, but to merely represent an opinion. An objective approach is intended, but the conclusion expresses a point of view, which, I hope, is clear and consistent enough to allow those who may disagree to take issue.

There is a great deal of room for disagreement on a subject such as this. The sources used in determining the content of this presentation are listed in the …

A Two Year Course Outline In Quantity Foods For Intermountain High School Girls, June C. Larson May 1966

A Two Year Course Outline In Quantity Foods For Intermountain High School Girls, June C. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has recently completed or is now in the process of building 19 new grade schools on the Navajo reservation. Some of these schools are boarding schools, and some are day schools, but each new school needs school lunch personnel. To meet this need intermountain School added to their curriculum a course in Quantity Foods to be given to Junior and Senior High School girls as a two year vocation. This necessitated the development of a 2 year course outline for the 2 year Quantity Food class, which gave the girls 4 hours daily practical training …

Neutral 17-Ketosteroid And 17, 21-Dihydroxy-20-Ketosteroid Excretion In Urine Of University Women During The Menstrual Cycle, Shao Shen Yam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the last few years, much research has been done on lipid metabolism because of the possible involvement of lipids in atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. These diseases appear to be related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Since sex differences have been noted in lipid metabolism, the role of steroid hormones has been under investigation in a number of laboratories. Coronary heart disease occurs only rarely in women during the reproductive phase. In men, the administration of estrogens results in a decreased serum cholesterol level while androgens tend to increase circulating cholesterol.

Experiments on rats and chickens have indicated that …

Cholesterol Levels In Serum And 5Β – Pregnane – 3Α,20Α - Diol In Urine Of University Students, Gertrude Kuei-Shu Chiang May 1966

Cholesterol Levels In Serum And 5Β – Pregnane – 3Α,20Α - Diol In Urine Of University Students, Gertrude Kuei-Shu Chiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since there is a high incidence of coronary heart disease in humans of middle-age and older in the United States, and the mortality of this disease is still increasing, a great deal of research has been done in this field. Although many theories have been formulated concerning the cause of atherosclerosis, it is a very complex disease, and appears to be influenced by many factors. Disturbed lipid metabolism is widely believed to be involved in the development of the vascular lesions found in arteriosclerosis, although the nature and origin of the disturbance is unknown. The mechanism for the elevation of …

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson May 1966

The Impact Of Research And Development On Income And Employment In Utah, Thomas Clark Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research and development (R&D) play an increasingly important role in the economy of the United States. Total expenditures for R&D during the decade of the 1950's were greater than in the entire history of the United States previous to that time. As a percent of gross national product, R&D has grown from 0.2 percent in 1921, to 0.4 to 0.6 percent in the 1930's and 1940's, and is now more than 3 percent.1

Much has been said of the impact that the growth of R&D has on the general economy. R&D had also had a significant economic and sociocultural …

A Study Of The Extent To Which Further Consolidation Is Feasible And Desirable Within Selected County School Districts In Utah, Walter D. Talbot May 1966

A Study Of The Extent To Which Further Consolidation Is Feasible And Desirable Within Selected County School Districts In Utah, Walter D. Talbot

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Under the mandator consolidation act of 1915, the county-unit school district in Utah had its beginning (10). Although, through this consolidation movement, many small school districts were combined into larger ones, the elimination of the small districts did not, necessarily, provide for the elimination of the small schools. Due to several factors including distance, poor communication and transportation facilities, and a strong desire on the part of the people who lived in small communities for a voice in school matters, the consolidation of school attendance areas did not keep pace with school district reorganization.

With the improvement of highways and …

Navajo Student Food Preferences, Kathlyn L. Coffman May 1966

Navajo Student Food Preferences, Kathlyn L. Coffman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adapt -- “to make suitable to requirements; adjust or modify fittingly." Adaptability is a trait which has been attributed to Navajo Indians by anthropologists, educators, novelists, psychologists, artists -- in fact, by almost everyone who has had dealings with them over a period of time. Yet, to identify specific examples of their adaptability and the attempt to measure the effect upon interpersonal relations of evidences of adaptation has proved to be no easy task.

A Comparison Of Tests Used In The Selection Of Milk, Roger L. Stephens May 1966

A Comparison Of Tests Used In The Selection Of Milk, Roger L. Stephens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The selection of milk has for many years been based upon the use of bacteriological tests such as the standard plate count, methylene blue, and resazurin tests. Such tests demoted the numbers of bacteria in milk and thus were well accepted as a close correlation of sanitary practices on the farm.

However, improvements in equipment, cleaning procedures, sanitizers and handling methods have greatly improved milk quality over the past decade. The farm bulk tank is a much more efficient system of cooling use in many areas. However, its very efficiency in cooling milk poses many new problems for those engaged …

Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks Apr 1966

Jack London: Master Craftsman Of The Short Story, King Hendricks

Faculty Honor Lectures

In November of 1898 Jack London, aged 22, sold his first short story, "To the Man on Trail," to Overland Monthly for the sum of $5. Three months later The Black Cat magazine paid him $40 for "A Thousand Deaths." This was the beginning of a writing career that in 17 years was to produce 149 short stories, not including his tramping experiences which he published under the title of The Road, 19 novels, and a number of essays. If all were accumulated and published, they would fill 50 volumes. Besides this, he wrote a number of newspaper articles (war …

Proceedings Of A Summer Institute In Water Resources: Volume 1 - Philosophical, Institutional, And Legal Aspects Of Water Resources, Cleve H. Milligan, Charles E. Corker, Wayne D. Criddle

Reports

Foreward: Recognizing the need for training of individuals to meet the rapidly rising problems connected with water resources development, Utah State University, with National Science Foundation support, organized a Summer Institute in Water Resources for college teachers. it was hoped that participants carefully selected from all regions of the country would receive additional insight and stimulation to improve and enlarge water resources training programs at their own institutions. Thus, the accelerated dissemination of such knowledge on a national scale could be facilitated. Realizing further that the key to a successful institute of this nature lay in the excellence of its …

Programs Of Guidance And Counseling As They Relate To Young People And Their Preparation For Work, William E. Mortimer

Applied Sciences, Technology and Education Faculty Publications

There is evidence on every hand that one of the important needs in present day and future education is good guidance and counseling. Although some guidance and counseling programs have been in operation for many years, only recently have they blossomed forth into the significant place in education which they now occupy. The rapid growth has brought about numerous problems, many of which are yet unsolved. Among these important unsolved problems are the following: What are the real duties and responsibilities of counselors? Is vocational guidance receiving its proper emphasis? How well informed about vocations are the counselors and how …
