A Thermodynamic Analysis Of A Primary Waste Stabilization Pond, David W. Hendricks
A Thermodynamic Analysis Of A Primary Waste Stabilization Pond, David W. Hendricks
Reports
Traditional design practice for waste stabilization ponds is based upon the premise that sufficient photosynthetic oxygen must be produced within the pond to satisfy oxygen requirements of the incoming waste flow. Thus, because algae production is proportional to pond surface area, surface organic loading rate is a principal design criterion (hydraulic detention time is the other) . That a possible adverse energy trade exists in the sequence of coupled reactions (aerobic waste degradation-photosynthesis) has been largely ignored. This work is focused on quantitatively articulating this energy trade, in terms of algae produced vis a vis waste degraded. This is done …

Are Pschological Principles Useful?(A Guid To The Study Of Human Learning), David R. Stone
Faculty Honor Lectures
To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.
It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.
A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …
The Case For Town And Country Planning, Allen Lebaron
The Case For Town And Country Planning, Allen Lebaron
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
In many ways town and country planning is an exceedingly old science or art. Nineva, Babylon, and Damascus were (or are) planned cities and as long as 3,000 B.C. worker's villages in areas near the sites of the great pyramids were carefully laid out. Miletus was an example of town planning by the ancient Greeks and or course the Romans were notable and conspicuous planners.

Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson
Graduate Recital, Gerald Graham Peterson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
For several years the writer had considered the idea that being an accomplished performer would be challenging and stimulating. He had been in public school music instruction and unable to develop this idea to the point that he would like. After his decision to work on a Master 's Degree in music, the thought of performing a recital was greeted as a welcome experience.
Certain aspects had to be considered before actual practice on a recital could begin. When planning a program to present for the recital, two facts came to mind. The writer had played the clarinet for 16 …

This study was undertaken because of the seemingly large families of the Mormons in Logan, Utah. Until this year I had never been in an area where Mormons made up a significant proportion of the population and had not realized the apparent difference in family size when compared to non-Mormons.
As a member of the Experienced Teacher Fellowship Program, I also had occasion to take two classes in Marriage and Family in the Family Life College at the University, and this also stirred my interest in the subject.
In the process of reviewing the literature on family size (fertility) and …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In the first chapter of the Book of Esther, we are told of an exhibition created by King Ahasuerus. In the third year of his reign he staged a huge fair to display "the riches of his glorious Kingdom and the honor of his excellent Majesty." This event was a forerunner of today's world fair. It lasted "many days, even an hundred and fourscore days." Interestingly enough, that span equals exactly a current world's fair season.

The Problem Of Terminal Xanthommatin Synthesis In Drosophila, John P. Phillips
The Problem Of Terminal Xanthommatin Synthesis In Drosophila, John P. Phillips
Biology
A model for the synthesis of the brown insect pigment, xanthommatin, has been proposed by Butenandt, Biekert, and Linzen (1956). This model states that two molecules of 3-hydroxykynurenine condense in the presence of a phenol oxidase catalyzed dopa-dopaquinone redox system to form one molecule of xanthommatin. Two criteria have been used in this investigation to determine the validity of the model as applied to xanthommatin synthesis in Drosophila melanogaster. (1) Does the model provide a basis for the action of mutants, such as scarlet (st), cardinal (cd), and lightoid (ltd), which block the …
A Study Of The Growth And Sheath Shapes Of Sphaerotilus Natans In Response To Inhibitors And Specific Reagents, Lo-Ping Chi
A Study Of The Growth And Sheath Shapes Of Sphaerotilus Natans In Response To Inhibitors And Specific Reagents, Lo-Ping Chi
Biology
The sheath forming bacterium, Sphaerotilus natans is generally considered a nuisance organism. It is a causative agent of bulking sludge as well as the nuisance in commercial fishing areas. A unique characteristic of the bacterium is its coherent sheath. The formation, shape, and growth of the cell and sheath was observed by using seven inhibitors: neomycin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, penicillin, sodium azide, acridine orange, and phenethyl alcohol. In the study, minimal concentration of inhibitors was used to determine their effect on the cell and its sheath. In many cases, the sheaths developed abnormally, and cells appeared fragmented and isolated as if …

A Survey Of Projects Attempting To Provide Experimental Enrichment To Improve Improvement In Reading, Adell H. Thurman
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this complex modern world, reading is a medium of communication and a tool of learning that is an indispensable function in society (Tinker and McCullough, 1962) .
For many years the issues of reading disability were argued in terms of genetic as compared to environmental factors . In the light of research it is now known that the home produces a powerful impact upon the child's ability to learn and that social and cultural disadvantages can depress academic ability.
Over the years educators have been aware of the importance that experience plays in the child's preparation for reading. Hilliard …

The Utah Black Hawk War 1865-1871, Deloy J. Spencer
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
From 1865 until 1871 the Territory of Utah was the scene of a little-known war. The Ute and Piute Indians responding to pressure of white settlers devastated much of Utah south of Spanish Fork. During the first three years of warfare the Mormon Settlements south of the Utah Valley struggled to exist. The next three years saw improving conditions but a continuation of raids by the Navaho in the south.
This was a private war. Attempts to get government aid were futile. The settlers and the Mormon Church provided the men and equipment necessary. While the problems faced by the …
An Evaluation Of Distributive Education At Tooele High School, Hubert J. Jensen
An Evaluation Of Distributive Education At Tooele High School, Hubert J. Jensen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
An ever-increasing number of youth, upon leaving school, are finding employment in the distributive organizations--stores of all kinds, wholesale establishments, brokerage concerns, and other businesses. Studies and investigations show that more extensive and more effective training for employment is one of the outstanding needs of youth and adult workers in these occupations. It was to supply these needs in part, at least that, in succession of vocational a c ts, Congress provided for the training of persons employed in distributive occupations.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The development of education in the United States to its present standard has been a major contribution to the concept of democracy the world over. The education of people has been all-important to industrial progress.
Vocational training for distributive occupations is not in opposition to other kinds of education; in fact, vocational education is a vital part of education for a great number of persons. vocational training for distributive occupations has definite fundamental contributions to make toward the achievement of the major purposes of education in a democracy. These major purposes of vocational education are usually stated as: self-realization, civic …
Characterization Of A Group Of Bacteroides, Yung-Yuan Kwok
Characterization Of A Group Of Bacteroides, Yung-Yuan Kwok
Biology
Bacteroides are normal inhabitants of human bodies. Because of their anaerobic nature and fastidious nutritional requirement, their possibility of becoming a water pollution indicator to replace coliforms is low unless these problems can be solved. A medium used in this research proved to be highly selective for bacteroides but the recovery rate was too low. Using this medium 12 cultures were isolated and followed by a rather complete identification and characterization. Ten of the 12 cultures were bacteroides and 2 were of the genus Sphaerophorus. In order to fulfill the requirements of being an efficient medium for isolating bacteroides …

According to Maze, "A society that guarantees the social and political freedom of its members, through democratic means, and which extends this freedom into the realm of economics, may be expected to place a heavy responsibility upon its members to protect these freedoms through the exercise of sound choices among alternative means to desired ends." The educational means by which the individual learns of these alternatives must be provided.

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Two stores side by side have, under the free enterprise system, usually more than twice the business of a single store. Merchants of the world recognize the value of this cumulative pull; it is implicit in every Main Street, every Fifth Avenue, every crossroads store group.
In this paper, we are interested in shopping centers, which are compound of the department store, the rural general store, the downtown shopping block, and a traditional street market. This new type of store group will usually be under single ownership, a dominating fact which will show itself through a certain architectural unity which …

Attitudes Toward Water Resource Development, Use, And Control And The Rural-Urban Diffferential In The Bear River Basin, James Lane Gillings
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The rural-urban differential was investigated in its relationship to certain expressed attitudes relating to natural resource development, use, and control. The rural-urban differential was also investigated as a variable affecting expressed attitudes toward the educational, economic, and political institutions. The two sets of expressed attitudes were then correlated to each other.
A difference was found between the rural and the urban groups regarding their expressed attitudes concerning natural resource development, use, and control. Differences between the rural and the urban groups were also found in regard to attitudes toward the political institution. No significant differences were found regarding the attitudes …

Introducing Contemporary Music: A Method For Young Bands, Farrell Dean Madsen Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The introduction of contemporary music to elementary and junior high school students in performance classes is hindered by a shortage of such music playable by young students. For example, in Contemporary Music for the Schools (Music Educators National Conference, 1966) which is the major source of contemporary music for school bands, 85 band pieces are listed, but only five are designated as suitable for junior high school bands, and only two are designated as suitable for elementary school bands.
In this project, five original band pieces (Bodo, Whispers and Shouts, Malcolm, Fission and Fusion, Newton's …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects of maternal employment, as contrasted with maternal nonemployment, on the scholastic performance of children were studied using a sample of 80 Mount Ogden Junior High seventh grade students and their mothers. The 80 mothers concerned met the criterion for employment by having worked a forty-hour week outside the home the first six years their child attended school or the criteria of nonemployment by having never engaged in paid employment outside the home for the first six years of their child's schooling.
Of nine areas tested between the two groups no significant difference was found concerning grade point average, …
