Proteolytic activity of Streptococcus cremoris HP, P2 and AM2; Strept-ococcus lactis-C2, ML8 and a commercial mixed culture was determined in skimmilk and whey by measuring the increase in Absorbancy at 274.5 nm of a pH 4.6 soluble filtrate, following incubation in a 2.5% casein solution. Proteolytic activity, rate of acid production and growth rate decreased in order of C2, HP, mixed culture, AM2, ML8 and P2 at a regulated pH (6.1 - 6.2) and 32 C. The requirement of bacteria for water increases when temperature of growth deviates from the organism's optimum growth temperature. A psychrophilic organism was isolated from a meat sample stored at refrigerator temperature and shown to have an optimum temperature 17 C. Partial identification of the unknown meat isolate was also carried out using morphological and biochemical characteristics. A comparative study was carried out using a mesophile Staphylococcus aureus and a thermophile Bacillus stearothermophillus for requirements of free water at different temperature ranges. The ry+ gene of Drosophila melanogaster and its associated enzyme, xanthine dehydrogenase, were employed in an analysis of the relationship between regulation and the location of a gene in the genome. Enzyme assays as an indication of gene activity were performed on genotypes containing zero, one and two doses of ry+ genes. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity of rosy genes in normal and relocated positions was determined during development.
The results indicate: 1) the gene ry+ is differentially active during ontogeny; 2) the activity during ontogeny is proportional to the number of ry+ genes present in the genome; …

Blood is a constantly changing, highly complex tissue which is concerned with the transport of cell nutrients, the elimination of wastes, and the maintenance of chemical equilibrium. The mature red blood cell takes about seven and half days to develop, then has a life cycle of 120 days. Many factors are involved in this complicated process. Many nutrients are required for the frame-work of the red blood cells and in the hemoglobin within these cells.

The absorption, translocation and metabolism of 1,3-dichloropropene (a soil fumigant) in bush beans, tomato and carrot was studied under growth chamber and greenhouse conditions using solution culture, vermiculite and sand. Absorption was monitored using gas chromatographic analysis and isotope techniques. Plants were shown to absorb a maximum amount of dichloropropene by 24 to 48 hr from solution culture and vermiculite. The plant absorbed and translocated 1,3-dichlorpropene-14C-U readily to aerial parts of the plant.
Bush beans, tomatoes and carrots absorbed and translocated 3-chlorallyl alcohol-14C-U from solution culture and vermiculite. Levels of 3-chloroallyl alcohol reached maximum at 24 …

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the existing noise conditions within industrial education woodworking and metalworking laboratories to determine whether these noise conditions were a problem as seen by the instructors and if in fact these noise conditions exceeded the standards set by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). This study deals with labor force projections for the State of Utah, counties and multi-county areas, by age and sex for the years 1980, 1990, and 2000, using the technique of cohort analysis for long-range labor force projections. The study also examines some social and economic implications of labor force projections for Utah.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) has been v recognized as a helpful tool to the psychologist in identifying abnormal characteristics (Leverenz, 1956; Modlin, 1956; Hathaway and Mckinley, 1967; Hock, 1970). Likewise the Shipley-Institute of Living Scale for Measuring Intellectual Impairment (S-H) has also been recognized as a helpful tool in identifying emotional impairment (Pollack, 1942; Halstead, 1943; Fleming, 1943; Wright, 1946; Garfield and Fey, 1948; Lewinsohn, 1963) . This paper entails the economic and biological interpretation of the response of rangeland grasses to nitrogen fertilization. Six sites throughout Utah received graduated rates of fertilizer. The coefficients of the production function

An initial production and a carry-over response were identified on sites receiving greater than ten inches of annual precipitation. Optimum fertilization rates may be identified by equating the marginal physical product to the ratio of the price of nitrogen to the price of the forage.

Fish and wildlife were randomly sampled in Utah from pre-selected x areas and analyzed for levels of total mercury, dieldrin, DDT, and DDE. Levels were well within consumptive tolerance or guideline limits except for mercury levels of fish in Willard Bay Reservoir. PCB's were also identified in a large proportion of samples.
None of the chukars, 6 percent of the pheasants, 4 percent of the waterfowl, and none of the fish sampled, excluding Willard Bay Reservoir, were above the 0.5 ppm guideline level for mercury established by the Food and Drug Administration. Seventy-seven percent of the fish sampled from Willard …

Five day old dark-grown seedlings of Secale cereale variety "cougar" grown at 20 C were subjected to hardening at 2 C in daily increments from 0 to 7 days, to temperature stress at -5 C for 0, 1, and 3 days, and to recovery at 20 C for 0, 1, and 3 days. Unhardened plants were killed by temperature stress but as the time of hardening increased fewer plants were killed. After 5 days of hardening all plants survived subsequent freezing stress.
Mitochondria were isolated from the plants after they received various combinations of the three temperature treatments. There were …

During 1973 a series of land use planning workshops for local officials and interested citizens was held in the multi-county planning districts of the state of Utah. The workshops were based on a planning process which had been used in Wasatch County, Utah, to develop the Heber Valley Plan. The emphasis of this process and of the workshops was the involvement of the citizens of the community in the planning process and the use of natural resource information as an additional basis for making planning decisions.

The study compared the marital adjustment scores of young college student Mormon temple and nontemple couples. Marital adjustment scores of temple couples were significantly higher than they were for nontemple couples. Responses of 20 temple and 20 nontemple couples were analyzed controlling for age, length of marriage, income, number of children, and education. The mean marital adjustment scores did not vary significantly when each control variable was analyzed in terms of its effect on marital adjustment for temple and nontemple couples. Nontemple husbands and wives were affected differently by the various control variables.

This thesis examined the basic developmental concepts , space, quantity, time, miscellaneous, as they related to family size, sex, and rural-urban environment among kindergarten children.
The Boehm Test of Basic Concepts was individually administered to 53 students from two kindergarten classes--one from Ogden City School District and one from Cache County School District.
The findings indicated that family size, sex of the child, or urban-rural environment produced no significant differences in concept development among kindergarten children.

The problem to be investigated in this study was to examine the association between the educational training program of an Urban Job Corps Center and the reading performances of trainees from disadvantaged backgrounds.
A sample of 100 trainees was randomly selected to represent the total population of Job Corpsmen in an urban center. The Job Corps Center in Clearfield, Utah, was the initial site in this study. The sample selected from the Job Corps was from four racial-ethnic groups: Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Whites, and Mexican-Americans. This study was designed to reveal the self perception of unwed fathers. Ten men participated in the project; nine of them were 25 years of age or younger. To measure self perception an instrument was constructed in the form of a questionnaire. Each unwed father was then interviewed to discover his perceptions, particularly as they relate to their common plight of unwed fatherhood.
The men perceived themselves as normal young Americans, and felt their conduct and intentions were in compliance with peer expectations. Some of the subjects responded to the interview with descriptive and detailed accounts while others were either …

Several large sources of ice nuclei were identified for the Wasatch Weather Modification Experimental Area. When stable air masses remained over the area for several days, ice nuclei concentrations as large as 1750 per liter (measured at -20 C) were found at the surface. Concentrations as large as 6000 per liter were measured with an airborne ice nuclei counter over the smelter industry of the Salt Lake Valley. Ice nuclei concentrations during storm periods were usually less than 3 per liter, indicating an excellent potential for increasing precipitation amounts over the Wasatch Mountains through the release of artificial ice nuclei. …

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the political beliefs and extent of political participation of secondary and elementary teachers in the state of Utah. The relationship of sense of political efficacy and political participation for teachers as citizens and teachers as members of the teaching profession was investigated. The correlation of teacher as citizen political participation with teacher as professional political participation was also examined. Indexes measuring the teacher's sense of political efficacy, political participation, and extent to which they felt political behavior was professionally ethical were used. A potato varietal trial, the equivalent of the final step in a potato breeding and testing program was conducted in 1972 at the Farmington Experimental Sub-station, Farmington, Utah. The test consisted of twelve named varieties and two numbered selections.
This study measured the yielding capacity of new potato varieties and selections during one growing season at one location in Utah. Yields were compared with those of the older accepted varieties grown in the state and used as control or standard varieties in the varietal trial.

Primary production was measured on a 9.5 acre Cache Valley, Utah farm pond from July 1971 to July 1972. Polyethylene film tubes, with lids, were used to confine columns of water for determining dissolved oxygen concentration. Once a week, dissolved oxygen samples were taken at sunset, the following sunrise and sunset. Annual primary production was estimated at 1289 grams oxygen per square meter for two of the four stations, and 927 grams oxygen per square meter for the remaining two stations.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of access roads on the process of spontaneous colonization of virgin forest land in the tropical lowlands of Bolivia. An access road in the Department of Santa Cruz serving an area opened up by spontaneous colonization was studied. The interpretation of aerial photographs and data collected in the area were used to illustrate the importance of access roads for successful spontaneous colonization. General conclusions were drawn with regard to the role that spontaneous colonization as a dynamic force was playing in the development of Bolivia's tropical lowlands.

The purpose of this paper was to determine the economic, sociopolitical, and other related factors which account for the variation in state expenditures across time. Utah was selected as the test state and data were collected from school records, political rosters, employment statistics, and a variety of federal government documents. Particular emphasis was placed on three areas: the cause-effect relationships between variables, relating the model to a body of economic theory, and demonstrating how the model may be applied in forecasting state expenditure needs.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any differences in faculty members' and administrators' perceptions of those factors which should be influential and those factors which are actually accounted for in making decisions pertaining to salary increases at Utah State University.
The data for this study was collected from 55 administrators and 303 faculty members at Utah State University. A total of 21 factors, which were identified as being influential and/or determinants of faculty salary increases at Utah State University, were analyzed through the testing of four hypotheses using the chi square test for independence.
