Evaluation Of The Addition Of Granular Media Filtration To Wastewater Treatment Plants To Meet New Standards, Madhusudan M. Dawda, M. L. Davidson, E. J. Middlebrooks
Reports
A dual media filtration study was carried out at the central Weber Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ogden, Utah, to evaluate its feasibility as a tertiary treatment to meet new effluent quality standards. A review of the literature indicated that dual media filters were more efficient than conventional single media sand filters because of the “in depth” filtration achieved by dual media filters. An experimental filter was operated at four different hydraulic loading rates, ranging from 3 to 6 gpm/ft 2 (122.10 to 244.20 1/min/m2), to evaluate its effects on effluent quality. Hydraulic loading rate was shown not to affect suspended …

Water As A Factor In Energy Resources Development, A. Bruce Bishop, Melvin D. Chambers, William O. Mace, David W. Mills
Reports
Water, in many cases, is a key factor in the development of energy resources in the western states. The total water supply available in the arid west is fixed; yet potential water uses in the region are growing continually. In fact, in many areas quantities of water desired to be put to beneficial use has already surpassed the limit of local supplies as indicated by filings for water rights. The availability of water, in adequate quantities and of suitable quality, is one of the essentials to the economic viability of some economic sectors in the states in the Colorado River …

Water Quality As An Approach To Managing Recreational Use And Development On A Mountain Watershed: South Fork Of The Ogden River-Ogden Valley Area, Bruce A. Johnson, E. Joe Middlebrooks
Reports
The South Fork of the Ogden River, one of several heavily used mountain watersheds along Utah's Wasatch Front, was studied between February 1 and November 1, 1974, to determine the effects of recreation on water quality.
Although the greatest impacts on water quality occurred during spring runoff, it was found that recreational use had a definite effect on water quality. Bacteriological parameters were found to be the most sensitive indicators of contamination.
Differences between heavy weekend and light weekday recreational use were reflected by differences in bacteriological counts. Also, it appears that changes in bacterial water quality were more closely …

The Development Of A Proposed Model Office Stimulation For Implementation At The College Of Eastern Utah, Faye Ladawn Torgerson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A review of recent articles indicates that the effectiveness of simulation on Vocational Education has been substantiated. Many programs have been used throughout the United States which point out the success of office simulation.
Utah began simulation by converting trailers into mobile modern offices. The first class was taught in June, 1968, with a migrant farm worker project. The program was called MOE (Mobile Office Education). Hanson and Stocker were involved in the development and teaching of this program. They explain their ideas about a successful and effective simulation program:
It is a real organization of students formed under the …
An Improved Serologic Test For Mycoplasmas And The Effect Of Mycoplasma Arthritidis On The Release Of Lysosomal Enzymes From Cell Cultures, Leland George Foster
An Improved Serologic Test For Mycoplasmas And The Effect Of Mycoplasma Arthritidis On The Release Of Lysosomal Enzymes From Cell Cultures, Leland George Foster
Biology
The purposes of this investigation were to develop an improved method for the detection of anti-mycoplasmal antibody and the partial characterization of the effect of Mycoplasma arthritidis on lysosomal enzyme release from cells in culture. A new, rapid, sensitive and specific serologic test for the detection of anti-mycoplasmal antibody is described. This technique is based on the agglutination of acridine orange stained, whole mycoplasmas by homologous antiserum. The antiserum-aggregated, stained antigen is observed using the incident illumination fluorescence microscope. Titer of the antiserum is taken as the reciprocal of the highest antiserum dilution giving agglutination. Autoagglutination was a serious problem …

Speech Improvement Programs In Rural And Urban Utah Public Schools: Kindergarten, First And Second Grades, Linda B. Crozier
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Each year the public school speech therapist is confronted with large numbers of children having articulation problems. More often than not, the clinician is additionally faced with the task of selecting children with communication problems from among an extremely large population. By inspection, the list of children with articulation problems reveals a large percentage from the kindergarten, first and second grades who, if enrolled in a therapy program, would leave little time for children with problems in the upper grades.
The need for help with these articulation problems is felt almost universally by clinicians,Johnson (1967) indicated that as many as …

The Recreational Use Of Irrigation Canals: Logan City Canals As A Case Study, William R. Gast Jr.
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Irrigation plays a major role in Utah and other arid regions of the West. Canals transporting water from lakes, rivers and reservoires have converted millions of acres of marginal land to rich productive sites and are the lifeblood of western agriculture. These canals are common ingredient in the landscape and life styles of most communities of the state. Cache valley, Utah is one example of an area which has flourished with the use of irrigation canals diverted from the Logan River.
The growth of urban populations and demand for outdoor activities has created need for more local parks and recreation. …

Development Of Agricultural Cooperatives In Thailand, Wirote Manopimoke
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The seed of cooperatives was first brought to Thailand by Sir Bernard Hunter, the British banker, in 1914. Because of his suggestion , the first cooperative society was established in Phitsanulok Province in the northern part of Thailand, on February 26, 1916, along the lines of the Raiffeisen model, or what is known as the "village credit cooperative." The government at that time was still an absolute monarchy under the reign of King Rama VI. It desired, however, to relieve farmers from severe indebtedness and to enable them to expand their rice production, which was at that time becoming more …

Tutorial Reading Programs In The Elementary School: A Survey, Judith P. Mitchell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In this complex and often confusing country, reading is viewed by many people as the most important skill a child can acquire during his school years. Success in school, of both children and teachers, particularly in the elementary grades, is often measured by children's success in learning how to read. Reading is the tool that unlocks most knowledge for children and adults alike. As a person seeks employment the inability to read or the inability to read with facility greatly limits the opportunities.
Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd
Utah And School Age Parents, Willa C. Hurd
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Background. As Dean of Women in a small high school for the past three years, I have been frustrated because of the fact that there was no program for married and/or pregnant students that would educationally aid them.
Night high school courses are not, in my opinion, "equal education; " I felt the need for a definite program. The school district is both legally and morally responsible to provide educational opportunities to these students .
Justification. In 1970 an estimated 200,000 American girls under 18 gave birth. Nearly two-thirds of the girls had married by the time of delivery (Pregnant …

The 132 living members of the senior classes of 1946 and 1947 served as the population of study. The cohort approach was used to control such variables as age, high school education, rural area of origin and socio- cultural background.
Members of the population were located in their current places of residence through a number of tracking methods including checking high school reunion lists, contacting relatives, high school officials, …
Relationship Of Circulating Eosinophils, Other Blood Cellular Components And Plasma Corticoids In Dairy Cattle Subjected To Nutritional Stress, Eugene W. Wisniewski
Relationship Of Circulating Eosinophils, Other Blood Cellular Components And Plasma Corticoids In Dairy Cattle Subjected To Nutritional Stress, Eugene W. Wisniewski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Twenty-six first lactation dairy cattle were sampled biweekly for four months to determine the effect of five levels of nutrition on blood plasma corticoids, total and differential leucocytes, hemoglobin and packed cell volume. Cows completing their 305 day lactation during the four month sampling interval were removed from the experimental herd, but were sampled twice more.
It was hypothesized that cows on rations below NRC requirements for milk production would demonstrate stress symptoms of elevated plasma corticoids, elevated white blood count, neutrophilia and eosinopenia. It was also hypothesized that measuring the decrease in eosinophils would be a better method of …
