Final Design Report Of The Design Of A Climate Controlled Sleeping Chamber For Infants And Toddlers, Jennifer Stenger Stevens Jan 1985

Final Design Report Of The Design Of A Climate Controlled Sleeping Chamber For Infants And Toddlers, Jennifer Stenger Stevens

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

A climate controlled sleeping chamber, or air crib, for infants and toddlers is an alternative sleeping medium to the conventional crib. It is a chamber that is ventilated with air that is temperature and humidity controlled to provide an optimum sleeping environment for young children, ages 0 to 2 years. Its purpose is to enhance the psychological and physiological development of young children. Because it is easier to heat a small chamber than larger living quarters, the air crib also has economic advantages.

The design o climate controlled sleeping chamber must meet some minimum requirements. The system must provide an …

A Study Of Trihalomethane Precursors In Deer Creek Reservoir, Megan J. White, V. Dean Adams Jan 1985

A Study Of Trihalomethane Precursors In Deer Creek Reservoir, Megan J. White, V. Dean Adams

Reports

Deer Creek Reservoir and tributaries were monitored from May to December 1983 in a study of the occurrence of trihalomethane (THM) precursors in the reservoir and nutrient dynamics of the reservoir system. Microcosms were used to study the effect of the following parameters on THM precursor production in the reservoir system: phosphorus loading, sediment, algal growth, and application of algicide. Additionally, THM precursor concentrations of interstitial water were analyzed in reservoir and microcosm sediment samples. Microcosms treated with ahigh phosphorus loading (70 ug/1) had THM precursor concentrations significantly higher than those measured in microcosms treated with a low phosphorus loading …

Development Of Design Criteria For Sensitizer Photooxidation Treatment Systems, Richard J. Watts, V. Dean Adams, E. Joe Middlebrooks Jan 1985

Development Of Design Criteria For Sensitizer Photooxidation Treatment Systems, Richard J. Watts, V. Dean Adams, E. Joe Middlebrooks

Reports

Sensitized photooxidation is a physicochemical process that can degrade many toxic and refractory organic pollutants. A trace quantity of sensitizer added to the waste absorbs visible light; electronically excited intermediates then transfer the energy to decompose the waste. Engeineering design criteria were developed for industrial waste treatment lagoons that would use sensitized photooxidation. Design criteria were developed regarding optimum lagoon pH, optimum sensitizer concentration, depth and sizing of lagoons, dissolved oxygen requirements, and effect of temperature on photooxidation rate. Treatment of the refractory pesticides bromacil, terbacil, and fluometuron was investigated using methylene blue and riboflavin as sensitizers. Methylene blue-sensitized photooxidation …

Assessment Of Control Alternatives For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles Jan 1985

Assessment Of Control Alternatives For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles

Reports

Introduction: Over the last few years, the rising level of the Great Salt Lake has changed Utah. It has inundated vast waterfowl feeding areas, crippled the salt industry, required raising transcontinental freeways and railroads, threatened metropolitan waste treatment plants, caused a major electrical outage, and damaged many properties. If nothing is done, approximately $3.6 billion of damages in 1985 dollars can be expected by 2050 (James et al, 1985, p.4). This threat led the State Legislature to set aside $100 million (an amount approximating the damages that had then occurred) in January 1985 to identify, select, and implement remedial measures. …

Preliminary Identification, Analysis, And Classification Of Odor-Causing Mechanisms Influenced By Decreasing Salinity Of The Great Salt Lake, C. Earl Israelsen, Darwin L. Sorensen, Alberta J. Seierstad, Charlotte Brennard Jan 1985

Preliminary Identification, Analysis, And Classification Of Odor-Causing Mechanisms Influenced By Decreasing Salinity Of The Great Salt Lake, C. Earl Israelsen, Darwin L. Sorensen, Alberta J. Seierstad, Charlotte Brennard

Reports

Introduction: The rising level of the Great Salt Lake has received a great deal of attention because of the resulting physical damage to adjoining properties, threatened distruption of major transportation facilities, and environmental damage to feeding and resting areas for migratory waterfowl. Another problem of growing concern is that some zones of the lake are producing odors that are objectionable to nearby populated areas. These odors are most offensive during the warm summer months and appear to be increasing with the rising levels and decreasing salinity of the lake water. This report presents the approach taken and the findings of …

Problems Of Small Privately Operated Water Companies In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Frank W. Haws Jan 1985

Problems Of Small Privately Operated Water Companies In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Frank W. Haws

Reports

Although one in seven domestic water supply systems in Utah are privately owned and operated, they are characteristically small with 94 percent serving populations of less than 1,000. Per capita costs of service vary greatly but become relatively high for locations that are remote, where terrain and climate are extreme, where scale economies are absent, and where materials and skills for system repair and replacement are not locally available. Statistics indicate that the incidence of water quality violations relate strongly to system size. Yet corrections are often more difficult to achieve because well trained and full time operators cannot be …

Scanning Electron Microscopy In Retinal Research, Bessie Borwein Dec 1984

Scanning Electron Microscopy In Retinal Research, Bessie Borwein

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The literature on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) pertaining to the retina has been surveyed and described.

The first two papers on SEM and retina appeared in 1969. Most of the earlier studies concentrated on descriptions [by SEM alone, or with light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)] of the appearance of various retinae and retinal cells [fish, newt, primates, rodents and rabbits, bullfrog]; or embryology of the chick retina. Two papers dealt with retinal disease. In all there were 25 papers in SEM/retinal research before and in 1974. Since 1975 there have been 111 papers which have used SEM …

Progress In Element Analysis On A High-Voltage Electron Microscope, W. F. Tivol, D. Barnard, T. Guha Nov 1984

Progress In Element Analysis On A High-Voltage Electron Microscope, W. F. Tivol, D. Barnard, T. Guha

Scanning Electron Microscopy

X-Ray microprobe (XMA) and electron energy-loss (EELS) spectrometers have been installed on the high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM). The probe size has been measured and background reduction is in progress for XMA and EELS as are improvements in electron optics for EELS and sensitivity measurements.

XMA is currently useful for qualitative analysis and has been used by several investigators from our laboratory and outside laboratories. However, EELS background levels are still too high for meaningful results to be obtained. Standards suitable for biological specimens are being measured, and a library for quantitative analysis is being compiled.

Digital Processing Of Electron Energy Loss Spectra And Images, R. D. Leapman, K. E. Gorlen, C. R. Swyt Nov 1984

Digital Processing Of Electron Energy Loss Spectra And Images, R. D. Leapman, K. E. Gorlen, C. R. Swyt

Scanning Electron Microscopy

Processing in electron energy loss spectroscopy involves both data acquisition and analysis. The interface of an analytical electron microscope to a laboratory computer with a satellite microcomputer dedicated to data acquisition results in a system with a high degree of flexibility. In spectrum acquisition, channels may be selected around specific core edges, or dwell times may be varied continuously as a function of energy loss to reduce the dynamic range of the signal. Data transfer to the host computer allows further analysis such as the removal of plural scattering by spectral deconvolution. Elemental maps and line-scans can be recorded with …

Ultrasonic Microdissection Of Rat Cerebellum For Scanning Electron Microscopy, C. E. Arnett Iii, F. N. Low Oct 1984

Ultrasonic Microdissection Of Rat Cerebellum For Scanning Electron Microscopy, C. E. Arnett Iii, F. N. Low

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The cerebelli of rats were initially fixed with aldehydes (modified Karnovsky's fixative; 503 mOsM/L) by cardiac perfusion. Blocks of tissue were razor-cut, usually longitudinal to folia, and immersed in the same fluid for 2-4 hours. Three separate methods of treatment followed: (1) immersion in 1% aqueous boric acid, or (2) in 2% phosphate buffered OsO4 followed by boric acid or (3) in an 8/2 mixture of boric acid and OsO4. After 18-48 hours immersion the blocks were dehydrated in ascending grades of acetone. They were then exposed to ultrasound in 100% acetone at frequencies of 80 kHz …

Use Of Scanning Electron Microscopy To Study Structural-Functional Relationships In Normal And Diseased Platelets, J. C. Mattson Oct 1984

Use Of Scanning Electron Microscopy To Study Structural-Functional Relationships In Normal And Diseased Platelets, J. C. Mattson

Scanning Electron Microscopy

This paper reviews the contribution of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to our understanding of platelet physiology and pathology. Observations of platelet shape changes which accompany activation and the ability to visualize and analyze platelet aggregation and adhesion in three dimensions make this experimental medium an important tool in the evaluation of healthy and diseased platelets. While SEM adds a valuable third dimension to the study of morphology and ultrastructure, its greatest contribution is realized when studies are correlated directly with light and/or transmission electron microscopic observations and with studies of functional capacity.

Sunlight And Plants, Some Pursuits In Physiological Ecology, Martyn M. Caldwell May 1984

Sunlight And Plants, Some Pursuits In Physiological Ecology, Martyn M. Caldwell

Faculty Honor Lectures

A physiological ecologist, as the name suggests, focuses on the interface between plant physiology and the ecology of individual organisms. Yet, one in this field should know something about disciplines ranging from physiology, or in the case of the subject of this lecture, even photochemistry, to the study of entire ecosystems.
