Breeding Soundness In Rams: How To Do It..., Clell Bagley
Breeding Soundness In Rams: How To Do It..., Clell Bagley
All Current Publications
In order for ram breeding soundness examinations to be of maximum value to producers they must be relatively thorough as well as consistent. There is so much normal variation between rams that we cannot afford to add additional variability by lack of observation or inconsistent techniques.

Utah Space Grant Consortium
Active areas of research often create the need for improved technology to make observations in a way that has not previously been utilized. Such is the case with middle atmospheric research. This 60 to 120 km region of the atmosphere is too low to be directly probed by satellites and too high to be probed by research airplanes or high altitude balloons. Sounding rockets are the only vehicle that can carry instruments for in situ measurements. Up until now only a few methods have been available to track the location of a sounding rocket - radar skin tracking, radio beacon …

Development Of A Full-Spectrum Raman Device For Detection Of Environmental Contaminants, David G. Smith
Utah Space Grant Consortium
NASA needs sensors to accurately monitor the water and atmospheric quality in its space habitat. Concerns for health and safety necessitate the development of sensors to measure common atmospheric gas concentrations, as well as trace contaminants (low ppm or ppb), including both combustible and noncombustible gases. The University of Utah is developing an enhanced Raman monitoring system to detect airborne, environmental contaminants. We have collected laboratory data to benchmark current laser Raman technology for gas analysis, which provides a reference for future developments. The objective of this project was to design a prototype gas-phase monitor, incorporating new technology that would …
Managed Health Care And Its Effects On Health Care Access In Box Elder County Utah, Douglas Sean Linford
Managed Health Care And Its Effects On Health Care Access In Box Elder County Utah, Douglas Sean Linford
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Since 1994 the issue of how access is impacted by managed care in rural Utah has been the focus of State advisory groups, the Utah Health Policy Commission, and the legislature. The Health Systems Improvement Act (1995) formalized the concern with a request that the Utah Department of Health study this impact (Sinclair et. Al., #2, pg. 1). In focus meetings around the state, the perception that managed care can negatively impact access in rural communities is generally accepted without significant controversy. Such comments often assume that rural residents will be forced to travel further or will receive fewer services …

Discovery, Identification, And Evaluation Of Antifungal Compounds Produced By Pseudomonas Syringae, Kevin N. Sorensen
Discovery, Identification, And Evaluation Of Antifungal Compounds Produced By Pseudomonas Syringae, Kevin N. Sorensen
Biology
New antifungal agents are needed to combat the increasing incidence of fungal diseases. Strains of Pseudomonas syringae produce cyclic lipodepsinonapeptides (CLPs) such as syringomycin, syringostatin, and syringotoxin, which could be developed as therapeutic antifungal agents. Of these CLPs, syringostatin has been difficult to produce in vitro. Syringostatin production was achieved using syringomycin minimal medium supplemented with arbutin and D-fructose, and a high cell density. Syringostatin A (SS-A) was purified in quantities sufficient to evaluate its antifungal activities. The antifungal activities and erythrocyte toxicities of syringomycin E (SR-E), SS-A, and syringotoxin B (ST-B) were evaluated. All showed fungicidal activities against most …

A Study Of The Immune Effects Of Orally Ingested Ginseng Combined With Moderate High-Intensity Exercise In Mouse And Human Subjects, Gordon Hunter Pedersen
A Study Of The Immune Effects Of Orally Ingested Ginseng Combined With Moderate High-Intensity Exercise In Mouse And Human Subjects, Gordon Hunter Pedersen
Biology
Ginseng, an extract of the Panax ginseng plant, and exercise producing a heart rate of 82.5% of maximum were studied alone and in combination for effects on certain immune parameters in mice and young adult humans, and on development of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in mice. A motorized treadmill was used in the mouse experiments, with a clinical pulse oximeter adapted to monitor heart rates and arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2). Compared to infected controls whose death rate was 60%, orally administered ginseng (250 mg/kg/day) beginning 48 hours pre-CMV inoculation caused a 25% survivor increase. Exercise (six repetitions of running …
Superoxide Dismutase And Catalase In Trichoderma Harzianum, A Biological Control Fungus Of Rhizoctonia Solani Disease Of Sugar Beet, June Inez Pounder
Superoxide Dismutase And Catalase In Trichoderma Harzianum, A Biological Control Fungus Of Rhizoctonia Solani Disease Of Sugar Beet, June Inez Pounder
Biology
A strain of Trichoderma harzianum (referred to as Tex) and its chemically generated mutant, T95, produced antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase and catalase. The mutant and wild type had similar enzyme activity levels but differed in isozyme patterns and response to exogenous activated oxygen species. Superoxide dismutases had manganese and copper-zinc prosthetic groups, determined by selective inactivation with sodium azide, potassium cyanide, diethyldithiocarbamate, and hydrogen peroxide. Catalases from Tex and T95 were inhibited by 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole. Antioxidant enzymes may be important in survival of T. harzianum and its effective biocontrol of root diseases. In its role as a biocontrol agent, T. harzianum …
A Comparison Of The Impact Of Two Different Levels Of Item Response Effort Upon The Return Rate Of Mailed Questionnaires, Philip L. Rodgers
A Comparison Of The Impact Of Two Different Levels Of Item Response Effort Upon The Return Rate Of Mailed Questionnaires, Philip L. Rodgers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mail questionnaires are a popular and valuable method of data collection. Nonresponse bias is, however, a potentially serious threat to their validity. The best way to combat this threat is to obtain the highest possible return rate. To this end, many factors that are believed to influence return rates have been empirically studied. One factor that has not been empirically examined is the impact of item response effort on return rates, where response effort is defined as the amount of effort that is required by a respondent to answer questionnaire items.
The purpose of this study was to determine if …
Dna-Protein Cross-Linking By Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Gail L. Drew
Dna-Protein Cross-Linking By Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids, Gail L. Drew
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are natural plant compounds found in hundreds of plant species worldwide and are reported to have cytotoxic, carcinogenic, antimitotic, and genotoxic activity. PAs are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 (CYP) system to the pyrrole or the N-oxide form. The pyrroles are bifunctional electrophilic alkylators that bind cellular nucleophiles such as DNA and proteins and sirupt normal cell processes, including DNA replication and gene transcription and can cause megalocytosis. The pyrroles dehydrosenecionine (DHSN) and dehydromonocrotaline (DHMO) are among the most potent PA cross-linkers and inducers of megalocytosis. DHSN and DHMO-induced cross-links in cultured normal (MDBK) and neoplastic (MCF7) …
An Investigation Of The Temporal Stability Of Self-Reported Internalizing Symptoms In Elementary-Age Children, Kurt David Michael
An Investigation Of The Temporal Stability Of Self-Reported Internalizing Symptoms In Elementary-Age Children, Kurt David Michael
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Over the past two decades, a great deal of research has been devoted to the understanding of internalizing disorders in children. Internalizing disorders encompass a wide variety of problems, including depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, and somatic complaints. It has been suggested that the existence of internalizing disorders in children has negative effects upon their self-esteem, academic achievement, physical health, and future adjustment. However, because internalizing disorders are, in great measure, subjective perceptions of internal distress, they are often not readily or reliably identified by external observers. As a result, several researchers have stressed the importance of eliciting the child's perspective …

I received 2nd place at this competition. During the summer of that year, I researched FAS more to receive the needed resources to compile an annotated bibliography …
The Job Task Model As A Means For Understanding Computer Usage In The Work Place, Vicki S. Napper
The Job Task Model As A Means For Understanding Computer Usage In The Work Place, Vicki S. Napper
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A qualitative study of a workplace was conducted through the use of interviews and observation of ten participants working in hardware and software engineering. The study arose from a lack of information on computer usage in workplace settings and a lack of identified functional needs for skills-based training.
There were three primary guiding questions and areas of findings in this study:
l. Does the job task model define the areas of computer literacy for the individual worker?
The job task model proved to be an effective method for analyzing tasks, tools, and the environment for usage of computer technologies in …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Little is known of the elderly's ability to use a food frequency questionnaire to describe their dietary intake. This study examines the elderly's ability to reliably describe their diets and how age, education, cognitive status, and gender may affect their ability to complete and return a food frequency questionnaire. The reproducibility of the questionnaire was tested by a repeated administration among 85 participants 65 years of age and older from the Preston, Idaho, area. Correlation coefficients between nutrient scores from the first and second administration ranged from 0.48-0.79 (total population), 0.44-0.88 (males), and 0.39-0.86 (females). Median values for the correlation …

Cooperative Games: Promoting Prosocial Behaviors In Children, Abbie R. Finlinson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Children who develop more prosocial behaviors tend to be more competent socially than those children who develop fewer prosocial behaviors. Group games are especially effective in the facilitation of prosocial behaviors. This study compared the number of prosocial or positive behaviors and negative behaviors displayed during cooperatively and competitively structured game treatments using the Observational Checklist and the Teacher Checklist. We controlled for possible differences in teacher nuturance through the Caregiver Interaction Scale. Participants included 20 boys and 19 girls (mean age = 4 years 7.3 months) enrolled in one of two classes at Utah State University s …
Predictors Of Employment For Women In A Life Transition, Kathryn Higley
Predictors Of Employment For Women In A Life Transition, Kathryn Higley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research explored the association between positive employment outcome (getting a job above poverty wage) and several intake variables for women in transition. The variables (self-esteem, anxiety and/or depression, pretreatment change, family functioning, community/social support, and counseling and assertiveness classes) were identified from the literature for their probable association with positive employment outcome. The intervention of taking an assertiveness class was statistically associated with positive employment outcome. The other variables appear to be linked to positive employment outcome in the direction hypothesized, although none of them reached statistical significance.
The demographic variables of family size and employment status at intake …

Black English, Karen Tibbitts Filimoehala
Black English, Karen Tibbitts Filimoehala
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Black English has recently entered the media spotlight with the passing of the Ebonics resolution by the Oakland School Board on Dec. 18, 1996. In this resolution, the school board unanimously voted to recognize Black English or "Ebonics" (a term which combines the words "ebony" and "phonetics")(LeLand & Joseph, 1997, p. 78) as the primary language of many of its students, and to teach students in their primary language in order to maintain the "legitimacy and richness" of the language, and to help students master standard English. Needless to say, the resolution was met with highly charged arguments - some …

Artistic Truth, Jennifer Jones
Artistic Truth, Jennifer Jones
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Since I began writing personal essays I have looked at others' writings differently. I analyze writing techniques and look for hidden how-to instructions from which I can learn more about the craft from the masters. One technique that has continually fascinated and challenged me as a writer is the weaving of fact and fiction into meaningful and colorful works of art. As I grew more serious about writing creative non-fiction my senior year, my interest in the shaping of truth in writing intensified and the idea for this study was born. Part One of the following is a compilation of …
Interpretive Implications Of Architecture In Musical Performance, Shane Fellows
Interpretive Implications Of Architecture In Musical Performance, Shane Fellows
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The purpose of the present essay is to attempt the formulation of a plausible approach to the interpretive performance of music. Such, if successful, would be of special import in the effective and thoughtful rendition of all music; but especially in those numerous cases where application of performance practice is conjectural. This does not constitute an attempt at the definition of "authentic performance". Rather it is an effort in the direction of the establishment of defensible and especially of objective interpretive guidelines. By no means do I submit that this approach is the only plausible one; but the one which …

A Comparative Analysis Of Seven Published Self-Report Measures For Assessing Internalizing-Type Symptoms In Children And Adolescents, Kathryn E. Anderson
A Comparative Analysis Of Seven Published Self-Report Measures For Assessing Internalizing-Type Symptoms In Children And Adolescents, Kathryn E. Anderson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The broad domain of internalizing disorders encompasses a variety of symptoms that are specific to child and adolescent populations and generalizable to adult populations. Internalizing disorders, commonly referred to as " emotional problems," include such problems as depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, somatic complaints, and low self-esteem. The other side of this classification dichotomy is that of externalizing disorders (e.g., conduct disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder), which involve overt behaviors considered as "undercontrolled". In contrast, internalizing problems involve behaviors that possess an "overcontrolled" quality. Such a covert nature leads to difficulty in identification and diagnosis, as they often go unnoticed by the …
Evaluation Of Translocation Criteria For Trumpeter Swans Reintroduced To Northern Utah: Habitat Quality And Interactions With Tundra Swans, Katharina A. M. Engelhardt
Evaluation Of Translocation Criteria For Trumpeter Swans Reintroduced To Northern Utah: Habitat Quality And Interactions With Tundra Swans, Katharina A. M. Engelhardt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Fifty-seven Trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) were translocated to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and the Bear River Club Company in northern Utah. The purpose of this effort was to encourage dispersal of the Rocky Mountain population of Trumpeter swans during the winter, and to reestablish a migratory route to southern wintering grounds. I assessed the success of the translocation by evaluating 13 translocation criteria proposed in the literature. In this study I addressed two of these criteria in detail by evaluating habitat quality at the translocation sites and by analyzing potential competitive interactions with Tundra swans ( …
