Psychology Faculty Publications

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the audiological test results from a sample of 60 adults with self-reported misophonia.

Method: Audiological testing was completed prior to participant randomization in a controlled trial for misophonia treatment. Participants completed the Inventory of Hyperacusis Symptoms Survey (IHS), the Tinnitus and Hearing Survey (THS), the Misophonia Questionnaire (MQ), and behavioral and objective audiometric measures.

Results: Hearing thresholds were less than 25 dBHL for 97% of the participants. Loudness Discomfort Levels (LDL) for tonal stimuli suggested hyperacusis in 25% of the sample. Total scores on the IHS indicated 12% met the clinical …

Exploring Indigenous Climate Change Perceptions Through Tribal Talking Circles In The Colorado Plateau, Bayli Hanson, Roslynn Brain Mccann, Danielle Smiley Sep 2024

Exploring Indigenous Climate Change Perceptions Through Tribal Talking Circles In The Colorado Plateau, Bayli Hanson, Roslynn Brain Mccann, Danielle Smiley

Environment and Society Student Research

Marginalized communities, including Indigenous populations, experience climate change at a more extreme rate given where they live, despite their knowledge of and connection to the land. Due to this interconnection, there have been many negative impacts on cultural identities in correlation with climate change. For example, Indigenous communities that continue growing food, hunting and foraging on traditional lands now face increasingly limited resources due to changes in the land itself. To better understand Tribal experiences with our changing climate, this qualitative research study involved talking circles with Tribal members in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States. Specifically, our …

Remote Sensing Detection Of Growing Season Freeze-Induced Defoliation Of Montane Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) In Southern Utah, Usa, Timothy E. Wright, Yoshimitsu Chikamoto, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz Sep 2024

Remote Sensing Detection Of Growing Season Freeze-Induced Defoliation Of Montane Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) In Southern Utah, Usa, Timothy E. Wright, Yoshimitsu Chikamoto, Joseph D. Birch, James A. Lutz

Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research

Growing season freeze events pose a threat to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), leading to canopy defoliation, reduced vigor, and increased mortality, especially for declining montane populations western North America. Detecting the spatial distribution and progression of this damage is challenging due to limited in situ observations in this region. This study represents the first attempt to comprehensively resolve the spatial extent of freeze-induced aspen canopy damage in southern Utah using multispectral remote sensing data. We developed an approach to detect the spatial and temporal dynamics of freeze-damaged aspen stands, focusing on a freeze event from 8-9 June 2020 …

A Preliminary Fuzzy Inference System For Predicting Atmospheric Ozone In An Intermountain Basin, John R. Lawson, Seth N. Lyman Sep 2024

A Preliminary Fuzzy Inference System For Predicting Atmospheric Ozone In An Intermountain Basin, John R. Lawson, Seth N. Lyman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

High concentrations of ozone in the Uinta Basin, Utah, can occur after sufficient snowfall and a strong atmospheric anticyclone creates a persistent cold pool that traps emissions from oil and gas operations, where sustained photolysis of the precursors builds ozone to unhealthy concentrations. The basin's winter-ozone system is well understood by domain experts and supported by archives of atmospheric observations. Rules of the system can be formulated in natural language ("sufficient snowfall and high pressure leads to high ozone"), lending itself to analysis with a fuzzy-logic inference system. This method encodes human expertise as machine intelligence in a more prescribed …

The Virtue(S) Of Courage In Teaching, Michael Otteson, Mike Ashfield, Brittany Gentry, Rachel Robison-Green

Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference

Across many traditions of thought, courage is understood as a virtue of character. But while we may default to thinking of it as a virtue of the individual, especially that of the warrior or soldier, it is an excellence that serves us well in many walks of life, including teaching, and it is a virtue of communities as well as individuals. Therefore, in this information session, USU's assistant professors of philosophy will discuss some of the more challenging or intimidating topics tackled in their classrooms and share strategies, tactics, and logistics for encouraging student success in these campaigns.

The Courage To Teach With Intention, Wayne Hatch Sep 2024

The Courage To Teach With Intention, Wayne Hatch

Empowering Teaching Excellence Conference

Teaching conferences are full of ideas to help you be an amazing teacher, to help your students learn, and to help you improve your teaching portfolio. Is it all overwhelming? Is it all necessary? Will it help you teach better? Will it help your students? As teachers, we will never all teach the same way. We will never all reach the same students in the same way. Every teaching technique won't work the same for all. Because of this, self-reflection is key for us to individually become the best teacher version of ourselves. Taking time to reflect on what our …
