A History And Cultural Resource Site Recordation Of Ogden Center And The Home Of Truth Cooperative Settlement, Heather M. Weymouth

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this project was to complete an intensive level cultural resource inventory of the historic property known as Ogden Center and the Home of Truth Cooperative Settlement (Home of Truth). The goal of an intensive level inventory is to identify, record, and determine the extent and significance of a particular historic property. In order to meet these criteria, the site and associated individual features must be thoroughly documented through description, mapping, and photography. In addition to working with the on the ground, physical characteristics of the site, documentary research must be conducted in order to provide a historic …

X-Ray Diffraction And Crystal Size, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera Mar 2002

X-Ray Diffraction And Crystal Size, Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

X-ray diffraction technique is one of the best methods to study polymorphism of fats systems. The only information authors usually report is the interplanar distances calculated from the angles at which diffraction lines appear; these clearly determine the polymorphic form. However, in many other fields using crystallography, X-ray patterns are also used to determine crystal size from the broadening of the diffraction line at half the line of maximum intensity. To investigate the meaning of the diffraction line width in fat systems and the relationship with other techniques widely used to determine crystal size, we crystallized a blend of 30–70% …

Licensing And Operations Of The Clive, Utah Low-Level Continerized Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility - A Continuation Of Excellence, M.R. Ledoux, M.S. Cade

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Envirocare’s Containerized Waste Facility (CWF) is the first commercial low-level radioactive waste disposal facility to be licensed in the 21st century and the first new site to be opened and operated since the late 1970’s. The licensing of this facility has been the culmination of over a decade’s effort by Envirocare of Utah at their Clive, Utah site. With the authorization to receive and dispose of higher activity containerized Class A low-level radioactive waste (LLRW), this facility has provided critical access to disposal for the nuclear power industry, as well as the related research and medical communities. This paper chronicles …

Comparative Analysis Of Pollution In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Cameron Christison, Joel Moore, Donovan Gross, Sophia Bates, Sara Kircher Feb 2002

Comparative Analysis Of Pollution In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli, Cameron Christison, Joel Moore, Donovan Gross, Sophia Bates, Sara Kircher

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Farmington Bay covers 94 mi2 (260 km2) in the SW comer of the Great Salt Lake, and is essentially a separate lake because it is enclosed by Antelope Island and a causeway leading to the island from the mainland. The bay has received wastes from the adjoining Salt Lake City metropolitan area for decades. Because of water quality concerns for Farmington 8ay, the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory class at Utah State University studied the bay and a nearby control site (Bridger Bay) in the Great Salt Lake during the fall of 2001. Field sampling and laboratory experiments, as well as other …

Disaster At The Colorado, Charles W. Baley Jan 2002

Disaster At The Colorado, Charles W. Baley

All USU Press Publications

This is a good book, worthy to join a host of other western trails studies... The work, largely narrative, is based on many primary sources and, equally important, it is readable. The armchair explorer will be satisfied, and there is enough trail topography for 'ruts nuts' and 'in the dirt' students. It is apparent that the author followed much of the trail himself and presents a good sense of place, putting the reader in the picture. —Stanley B. Kimball, Western Historical Quarterly Across north-central New Mexico and Arizona, along the line of Route 66, now Interstate 40, there first ran …

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Human Development Index, Basudeb Biswas, Frank Caliendo Jan 2002

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Human Development Index, Basudeb Biswas, Frank Caliendo

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

A multivariate technique called principal component analysis is used to combine measures of human development. The first principal component index is the linear combination of component indexes with maximal information content. This multivariate technique accounts for differences in the variances of component indexes as well as interdependence among the component indexes. The first principal component of the three indexes used in the HDI (life expectancy, education, GDP) yields rankings nearly identical to the HDI itself. We interpret this as theoretical support for the HDI ranking system as a Inetric of international hUlnan development.

The Effects Of Economic Growth And Public Support Of Health Services On Longevity--A Panel Data Analysis, Basudeb Biswas Jan 2002

The Effects Of Economic Growth And Public Support Of Health Services On Longevity--A Panel Data Analysis, Basudeb Biswas

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

It is now recognized that the growth rate of per capita real income is not the only indicator of development. Development is a multidilnensional concept that focuses on development ofhuman beings through removal of poverty, ill health, illiteracy, and other social deprivations. The observed positive correlation between the growth of GNP per head and the average quality of life may not be as strong as it appears to be. It is argued that the causal relation between income and life expectancy, which is taken as a proxy for the index of quality of life works mainly through the impact of …

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Regional And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Kaplan, Emilson C.D. Silva Jan 2002

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Regional And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Kaplan, Emilson C.D. Silva

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We compare tradable permit markets and emission taxes as self-enforcing mechanisms to control correlated externality problems. By "correlated" we mean multiple pollutants that are jointly produced by a single source but which simultaneously cause differentiated regional and global externalities (e.g., smog and global warming). By "self-enforcing" we mean mechanisms that account for the endogeneity that exists between competing jurisdictions in the setting of environmental policy within a federation of regions. We find that joint domestic and international permit markets are Pareto efficient, while joint emissions taxes are not.

Supplier Selection And Assessment: Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan Jan 2002

Supplier Selection And Assessment: Their Impact On Business Performance, Vijay R. Kannan, K. C. Tan

Management Faculty Publications

Increasingly, firms are allocating more resources to their core competencies and encouraging the outsourcing of non-core activities, which increases their reliance and dependence on suppliers. This increases the importance of effective supplier selection and assessment. Sparse evidence exists regarding the impact of supplier selection and assessment on a buying firm's business performance. This research describes an empirical study of the importance of supplier selection and assessment criteria of American manufacturing companies for items to be used in products already in production. Moreover, it identifies relationships between criteria and a buying firm's business performance. Results indicate that soft, non-quantifiable selection criteria, …

If You Can't Trust The Farmer, Who Can You Trust? The Effect Of Certification Types On Purchases Of Organic Produce, Lynn Hunnicutt, John E. Keith, Ruby Ward Jan 2002

If You Can't Trust The Farmer, Who Can You Trust? The Effect Of Certification Types On Purchases Of Organic Produce, Lynn Hunnicutt, John E. Keith, Ruby Ward

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

An information asymmetry exists in the market for organic produce since consumers cannot determine whether produce is organically or conventionally grown. Various methods may solve this problem including signaling, reputation, and certification. Signaling and reputation may not work well, because signals are noisy, and reputation may be difficult for a producer to establish. Certification of the farm and its growing methods shows the most promise. A survey instrument testing the efficacy of certification is presented along with empirical analysis suggesting that no notable difference existed between independent certification methods, although independent certification had significantly different effects than self-certification.
