A Monopropellant Milli-Newton Thruster System For Attitude Control Of Nanosatellites, Donald Platt

Small Satellite Conference

Work is progressing on monopropellant thrusters for use as an attitude control system for nanosatellites (satellites whose mass is under 10 kilograms). The thrust range for these microthrusters is on the order of millinewtons. Systems using both hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide are being developed which will offer higher performance than currently available thrusters for nanosatellites. Complete thruster systems using both propellant combinations have been built and are undergoing evaluation. Hot firings are currently being conducted. The microthruster system will be tested on an upcoming nanosatellite to be launched at the end of this year. These thrusters will offer an inexpensive, …

Stpsat-1: A New Approach To Dod Experiment Spaceflight, Patricia Davis, Glen Cameron, Eric Aamot, Nathan Devilbiss

Small Satellite Conference

For small satellites, finding affordable access to space is a daunting hurdle. The Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) promises to make excess capacity on future EELV launches available for the Department of Defense (DoD) Space Test Program (STP) and other organizations as a lower-cost launch alternative. STP Satellite Mission 1 (STPSat-1) is the first STP satellite built specifically to exploit this capacity. STPSat-1 continues STP’s mission to provide access to space for DoD sponsored experiments. This spacecraft hosts four such experiments: Spatial Heterodyne Imager for Mesospheric Radicals (SHIMMER); Computerized Ionospheric Tomography Receiver in Space (CITRIS); Micro-Electro-Mechanical …

A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman Aug 2002

A Small-Satellite Demonstrator For Generating Artificial Gravity In Space Via A Tethered System, Andre Mazzoleni, John Hoffman

Small Satellite Conference

It is well-known that prolonged exposure in humans to a microgravity environment leads to significant loss of bone and muscle mass; this presents a formidable obstacle to human exploration of space, particularly for missions requiring travel times of several months or more, such as a 6 to 9mon th trip to Mars. Artificial gravity may be produced by spinning a spacecraft about its center of mass, but since the g– force generated by rotation is equal to “omega-squared times r” (where omega is its angular velocity and r is the distance from the center of rotation), we have that unless …

Ffdem: Demonstrating Formation Flying With Small Spacecraft, Luís Gomes, Martin Sweeting, Theresa Beech, Guillermo Ortega

Small Satellite Conference

Several missions are currently proposed that require very close formation flying. Missions such as IRSI -Darwin and Xeus will require the development of new techniques and equipment to achieve the stringent performances required. Both these missions will be preceded by demonstration missions, aimed at validating concepts of formation flying and generating a European capability in this field. These precursor mis sions will very much be standard missions, using a classical “large project” approach. This has lead ESA to consider the procurement of an innovative mission, which would demonstrate some aspects of Formation Flying, using microsatellite class spacecraft, with a mass …

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson May 2002

A System For Emergency Care Ventilator Control, Brad Brian, Ken Johnson

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Closed-loop control of mechanical ventilators could have a positive impact on pre-hospital patient care. Several methods to achieve this goal have been researched. A current method entitled "Adaptive Volume ventilation" is being studied in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah Health Science Center. Preliminary clinical trials using the work of breathing model have shown that optimal settings for respiratory rate are significantly higher and optimal settings for tidal volume are significantly lower than those set by clinicians. Measured respiratory rate and tidal volumes were 9.7+/-1.4 bpm and 8.9+/-1.9 ml/kg, respectively. Optimal ventilator settings were calculated to be …

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Medical decision making is a crucial process to successfully treat a critical medical emergency. During an unexpected medical event, astronauts, like anesthesiologists, must react quickly in a complex environment. Tools, such as the pulmonary metaphor display, were created to aid the medical caregiver's decision making process. The pulmonary metaphor display is designed to help the caregiver collect and integrate pulmonary data to provide a more accurate, quicker diagnosis and treatment. The following outline anesthesiology simulation study will provide the data to prove that the pulmonary metaphor display is beneficial to medical decision making.

Community-Level Effects Of Clearcutting And Wildfire On Shrews, Grasshoppers, And Ground-Dwelling Beetles, J. Creed Clayton May 2002

Community-Level Effects Of Clearcutting And Wildfire On Shrews, Grasshoppers, And Ground-Dwelling Beetles, J. Creed Clayton

Biology

Timber harvesting is often proposed as a substitute for stand-replacing wildfire; many feel such a controlled disturbance plays a similar ecological role to the natural disturbance of fire. In order to gain more insight into the soundness of this management approach, ground-dwelling beetles (Coleoptera), grasshoppers, crickets, and allies (Orthoptera), and shrews (Insectivora: Soricidae) were sampled by pitfall trap in recently burned, clearcut, and undisturbed forested plots (controls) near Logan, Utah. Over 200 beetle species from 39 families were included in the study. Nine orthopteran and two shrew species were included as well. Beetle abundance was reduced after burning and clearcutting, …

The Influence Of Predator Exclosures And Livestock Grazing On Duck Production At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, Benjamin C. West May 2002

The Influence Of Predator Exclosures And Livestock Grazing On Duck Production At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, Benjamin C. West

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nest predation is a major factor impacting duck production and recruitment on breeding areas in North America. I surveyed waterfowl managers employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. state wildlife agencies to determine their beliefs about nest predation and its management. Over 64% of respondents believed that rates of nest success on their management units averaged < 30% between 1996-2000. Managers believed habitat management and direct predator control were the most effective techniques to reduce nest predation. The construction of predator ex closures around nesting habitat also has been recommended to reduce nest predation. Between 1999-200 I, I evaluated the effectiveness of 4 predator ex closures to enhance duck nest success at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah. During this period, rates of nest success in the exclosures were slightly higher than that within control plots, but still < 15%. Although published guidelines commonly recommend predator fences < 117 cm in height, I observed red foxes jump the 11 4-cm-high fences. Additional research is needed to identify effective predator fence designs.

Wildlife managers have argued that periodic disturbance of vegetation should be a component of management on waterfowl breeding areas. Although many techniques are available to manipulate vegetation, grazing by domestic livestock has been controversial. Some researchers have reported that livestock grazing …

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts May 2002

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study tracked the chronology and severity of Myxobolus cerebralis infection and related it to survival of age-0 kokanee to determine whether M. cerebralis represented a significant agent of morality in the population. Environmental conditions and losses to predation were identified and linked to age-0 kokanee survival to identify other sources of mortality in the population. We attempted to track survival of age-0 kokanee from the outmigration into the reservoir until the end of the first growing season in September of each year. The number of age-0 kokanee that entered the reservoir was calculated by obtaining estimates of total egg …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Alcohol Treatment Outcome Literature: 1993 To 2000, Anthony Phillip Tranchita May 2002

A Meta-Analysis Of The Alcohol Treatment Outcome Literature: 1993 To 2000, Anthony Phillip Tranchita

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alcohol misuse is a very common problem with high financial and personal costs. Treatment requires allocation of limited resources for optimal impact. Responsible decision making in this area should be based upon reasoned weighing of research evidence. Miller and colleagues completed a meta-analytic review of all controlled studies published before 1992 to help clinicians do just that. The coding system they employed examined methodological quality, as well as outcome, to obtain a rankordering of treatments that seem to have the most quality research support. The current study attempts to extend this work utilizing the same coding on studies published since …

Psychoeducation Groups For Parents Adopting Special-Needs Children, Korinne Knowlton Bouwhuis May 2002

Psychoeducation Groups For Parents Adopting Special-Needs Children, Korinne Knowlton Bouwhuis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis evaluated training groups for adoptive parents of special-needs children. It was hypothesized that training would influence parenting stress, stress symptoms, and marital satisfaction, and that helpfulness of training sections would depend upon the status of the participants' children (i.e., foster, adopted, or adoption in process). Data were collected from 15 participants who were sampled through agencies that typically interact with adoptive parents.

Repeated measures ANOYAs were computed to compare scores on the PSI/SF Parental Distress Subscale, OQ-45, and RDAS across three time intervals. No significant differences were found. Data from a scale of helpfulness were analyzed using descriptive …

Parents' Marital Quality And Interactions In Relation To Child Well-Being, Spencer C. Leavitt May 2002

Parents' Marital Quality And Interactions In Relation To Child Well-Being, Spencer C. Leavitt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Using a large national data set, this study was among the first to examine direct associations between parents' marital relationships and children's emotional, academic, and behavioral characteristics. The mediating effect of children's home environments, as well as relationships between children and parents, also were analyzed. The research design was longitudinal. Marital variables were measured in 1994, intervening variables in 1996, and children's outcome variables in 1998. It was expected that children would be influenced by three different aspects of their parents' marriage: marital happiness, marital interactions, and marital arguments. The parent/child relationship (parent/child closeness) and the children's home environments were …
