Located in the Rocky Mountain Region, Utah derives its name from the Native American Ute tribe and means “people of the mountains”. Utah is 84,900 square miles and is ranked the 11th largest state (in terms of square miles) in the US. As hosts of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, Utah boasts the “greatest snow on earth” and is the home of 18 colorful National Parks and monuments. Utah's peaks are, on average, the tallest in the country and create great contrasts that range from the snow covered peaks of the Uinta Range in the east, to the renowned natural …

Balancing Books: The Problem Of Scholarly Publication In The Promotion/Tenure Process, Michael Spooner
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
I never intended a career in publishing. In 1983, I was in grad school, trying to redeem an M.A. in literature by getting a more socially responsible M.A. in Teaching ESL, when somehow there was a baby on the way. I decided it was really my job to find a real job, and I happened into one in publishing. In those days, I wasn’t much of a people person, so the post of acquisitions editor had plenty of appeal. Acquisitions editors are the ones, as Dogbert says, who can reject your life’s work with a gesture and a witty remark. …

Final Environmental Assessment: Proposed Demolition Of 12 Structures, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Randal Klein, Kay Winn
Final Environmental Assessment: Proposed Demolition Of 12 Structures, Hill Air Force Base, Utah, Randal Klein, Kay Winn
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Hill AFB proposes to accommodate current United States Air Force (USAF) missions by demolishing 12 structures on Hill AFB. All 12 buildings have both aged and deteriorated to the point they cannot be economically repaired or remodeled. Seven of the 12 buildings would be demolished without being replaced in kind. For five of the 12 buildings, military construction (MILCON) projects would provide new facilities to house the activities that are or were being performed in the deteriorated structures. The proposed action and the no action alternative were both considered in detail. Following the demolition phase, backfill and revegetation operations would …

Integrated Hyperspectral, Multispectral And Video Imager For Microsatellites, Arnold Schoonwinkel, Hendrik Burger, Sias Mostert
Integrated Hyperspectral, Multispectral And Video Imager For Microsatellites, Arnold Schoonwinkel, Hendrik Burger, Sias Mostert
Small Satellite Conference
The multi-sensor micro-satellite imager (MSMI) programme is developing an imager suitable for microsatellites, with multi-spectral, hyperspectral and video detectors on the same focal plane of a single telescope. It also contains the mass memory and high speed data compression capability to store any combination of the above sensor outputs on board. The imager is designed as a standard payload for the African Resource Management (ARM) satellite constellation and will be test flown as part of the ZASat programme (as part of the South African Space programme). Consortium partners include universities, private companies and research councils in both South Africa and …
Accurate Battery Performance Modelling: The Key To Accessing A Truly Responsive Modular Small-Cell Concept , Chris Pearson, Nick Russel, Carl Thwaite
Accurate Battery Performance Modelling: The Key To Accessing A Truly Responsive Modular Small-Cell Concept , Chris Pearson, Nick Russel, Carl Thwaite
Small Satellite Conference
The AEA Technology (AEA) Small Cell concept allows an infinite range of battery sizes to be built up using the minimum amount of re-qualification. Furthermore, an extensive rolling stock of cells is held at AEA to ensure that future demand can be met without the need for programme delays due to cell manufacture lead-time. Batteries can be composed of modular blocks so that energy storage systems can be built up from common building bricks. This eliminates the need for qualification and minimises recurring battery cost. Such features have captured the mood of the small satellite community in the quest for …

Low Power High-Speed Radiation Tolerant Computer, David Czajkowski, Praveen Samudrala, Manish Pagey, David Strobel
Small Satellite Conference
This paper presents a new concept of building a high performance, radiation hardened computer from Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS). We discuss the underlying radiation mitigation technologies used, and demonstrate their (radiation-tolerance) capabilities by citing the radiation test results. Hardness against Single Event Upsets (SEU) for COTS microprocessors is achieved using Time-Triple Modular Redundancy (TTMR). Single Event Functional Interrupts (SEFI) of the microprocessors are being mitigated with an auxiliary Hardened Coreä (H-Core) chip. The other on-board chips used are a combination of space qualified, radiation hardened COTS parts. A flight unit of the computer based on the above mentioned technologies, Proton 100k, was …
Formation Flying Demonstration Missions Enabled By Canx Nanosatellite Technology, Eric Caillibot, Cordell Grant, Daniel Kekez
Formation Flying Demonstration Missions Enabled By Canx Nanosatellite Technology, Eric Caillibot, Cordell Grant, Daniel Kekez
Small Satellite Conference
Two nanosatellite missions that lay the groundwork for satellite formation flying are being realized at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, Space Flight Laboratory (UTIAS/SFL). Such an undertaking has never before been attempted with satellites of this size (< 10 kg). These missions will establish the core technologies necessary for formation flying endeavours at any scale, while capitalizing on the low-cost nature and rapid design cycle of nanosatellites. The key technologies being developed for the nanosatellite missions are nanosatellite propulsion, centimeter-level position determination, and active, three-axis attitude control. The first mission, CanX-2, currently nearing completion, will evaluate the core subsystems listed above. Its planned launch is scheduled for mid-2006. CanX-2 will be followed by a dual satellite mission, CanX-4 and -5, to be launched in 2008, that will build upon the experience gained from CanX-2 and demonstrate actual formation flying. This paper describes the design of CanX-2 and the practical lessons learned to date that can be applied to CanX-4 and -5. The objectives and preliminary mission profile for CanX-4 and -5 are also outlined.
System-Level Mitigation Of Sefis In Data Handling Architectures, A Solution For Small Satellites, Shazia Maqbool
System-Level Mitigation Of Sefis In Data Handling Architectures, A Solution For Small Satellites, Shazia Maqbool
Small Satellite Conference
We describe a fault-tolerant architecture designed to enhance commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) device-based space-system reliability, and to provide automated system recovery, in the presence of radiation-induced functional errors. The architecture is primarily aimed at cost-effective “small satellite” systems, where very limited mass, volume and power resources preclude the use of multiple-redundant system-based architectures. Our architecture is based on the concept of a fast data network interlinking all units of the data handling subsystem to an intelligent supervisor node. The supervisor monitors status messages from the units and intervenes when the state of a unit does not match expectations or messages stop arriving. …
A Standardized, Distributed Computing Architecture: Results From Three Universities, Michael Swartwout, Christopher Kitts, Pascal Stang, Glenn Lightsey
A Standardized, Distributed Computing Architecture: Results From Three Universities, Michael Swartwout, Christopher Kitts, Pascal Stang, Glenn Lightsey
Small Satellite Conference
At the 16th AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites, researchers at Santa Clara University (SCU) proposed a distributed computing architecture for small or multi-spacecraft missions. This architecture extended existing I2C, Dallas 1-wire and RS232 data protocols and was adaptable to a number of microcontrollers. Since then, that architecture has been implemented on six university-class space missions at three different universities. As “early adopters”, these universities had the typical challenges of working with a new, evolving standard and adapting the standard to their hardware and mission needs. Each faced additional, program-specific challenges related to project size, scope and infrastructure as well as …
