A History Of Fifty Years: 1888-1938, Joel Edward Ricks Jan 1938

A History Of Fifty Years: 1888-1938, Joel Edward Ricks

Joel Ricks Collection

For the past half century the Utah State Agricultural College has been making history without a history having been written. As the Semi .. Centennial year approached, the need of recording the outstanding events of the fifty years became imperative. This Institution, in the beginning, was established in the spirit of the Land Grant College Act of 1862-a spirit born in the gloom of military disaster and yet with rising hope and determination to preserve a Union which President Lincoln determined should "lift the burdens from the shoulders of all men." Each President of the College has stressed democracy and …

Bulletin No. 275 - Types Of Farming In Utah, Marion Clawson, Walter U. Fuhriman, George T. Blanch, W. Preston Thomas Nov 1936

Bulletin No. 275 - Types Of Farming In Utah, Marion Clawson, Walter U. Fuhriman, George T. Blanch, W. Preston Thomas

UAES Bulletins

A large portion of the agriculture of Utah, outside of the desert range areas, is characteristically heterogeneous rather than homogeneous in character. Marked differences in size of farm, in crops grown, in livestock kept, in yields, and in farm organization occur within short distances. This diversity is due in large measure to differences in soil, elevation, topography, and other physical features and to climatic characteristics such as amount, kind, and distribution of precipitation and length of growing season. The physical and climatic features are the chief determinants of the amount of water potentially available for the irrigation of the crop …

The Geology Of A Part Of The Bear River Range And Some Relationships That It Bears With The Rest Of The Range, Vic E. Peterson May 1936

The Geology Of A Part Of The Bear River Range And Some Relationships That It Bears With The Rest Of The Range, Vic E. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The structure of the western three or four miles of the Bear River range east of Logan, Utah, has many times been alluded to in papers written locally on Cache Valley and the related ranges. There has not however, ever been, to the author's knowledge, an investigation made of this portion of the range for the express purpose of determining its exact structure. Although the area specifically covered by this present investigation is greatly inadequate to base the whole west range structure on, the author believes that the facts brought to light by the specific study of this area, added …

Bulletin No. 208 - An Economic Study Of The Apple Industry Of Utah, 1926 - 1927, W. Preston Thomas, P. V. Cardon Dec 1928

Bulletin No. 208 - An Economic Study Of The Apple Industry Of Utah, 1926 - 1927, W. Preston Thomas, P. V. Cardon

UAES Bulletins

Utah's commercial apple industry had its beginning when apple production was rapidly expanding in the west and throughout the United states. The increase in price of apples from 1896 to 1910 stimulated commercial apple production in this state which, up to 1905, produced apples principally for local consumption, the family orchard supplying the local trade and home use. According to the data secured from the survey herein reported, the major part of the commercial apple trees standing in 1926, in Utah, were planted during the period from 1906 to 1915. In 1910, 60 per cent of the total trees in …

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson Jun 1923

The Movement Of Ground Water And Its Relation To The Drainage Of Irrigated Lands, Ernest O. Larson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922(1). The work completed is estimated to have reclaimed …

Circular No. 34 - Sugar-Beet Production In Utah, F. S. Harris, N. I. Butt Dec 1918

Circular No. 34 - Sugar-Beet Production In Utah, F. S. Harris, N. I. Butt

UAES Circulars

Utah is one of the pioneers in the beet-sugar industry. The first sugar factory was brought into the State in 1852, but, like all the early attempts to produce sugar from beets in the United States, the enterprise was unsuccessful. In 1891 a factory was erected at Lehi when there were less than a half a dozen factories in the United States. From this time on Utah has been one of the few states of the Union important in the manufacture of beet sugar. Since soil, climate, irrigation, and labor conditions are favorable to the crop, it is probable that …

Climate And Plant Growth In Certain Vegetative Associations, Arthur W. Sampson Oct 1918

Climate And Plant Growth In Certain Vegetative Associations, Arthur W. Sampson

Aspen Bibliography

The relation of climate to the growth and development of vegetation is of profound importance in both practical and experimental agriculture. It is extremely useful to know the cause of successful growth and establishment, or of partial success or failure, of various species in different plant associations and under widely contrasted climatic conditions. The climatic requirements of various plant types are largely responsible for the results obtained in the case of experimental seedings and plantings of most species. Once the adverse climatic factors are definitely known, failures with plants may be largely avoided by the judicious selection of sites or …
