Morphodynamic Signatures Of Braiding Mechanisms As Expressed Through Change In Sediment Storage In A Gravel-Bed River, Joseph Michael Wheaton, James Brasington, Stephen Darby, Alan Kasprak, David Sear, Damiá Vericat

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

[1] Previous flume-based research on braided channels has revealed four classic mechanisms that produce braiding: central bar development, chute cutoff, lobe dissection, and transverse bar conversion. The importance of these braiding mechanisms relative to other morphodynamic mechanisms in shaping braided rivers has not yet been investigated in the field. Here we exploit repeat topographic surveys of the braided River Feshie (UK) to explore the morphodynamic signatures of different mechanisms of change in sediment storage. Our results indicate that, when combined, the four classic braiding mechanisms do indeed account for the majority of volumetric change in storage in the study reach …

Physical Properties Of Pectin Aqueous Solutions Containing Sunflower Wax, Erica R. Baümler, Amalia A. Carelli, Silvana Martini Jun 2013

Physical Properties Of Pectin Aqueous Solutions Containing Sunflower Wax, Erica R. Baümler, Amalia A. Carelli, Silvana Martini

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The aim of this study is to investigate the physical properties of aqueous solutions of pectin (PA) containing sunflower wax (SFW), which are used as a basis for producing edible films. The stability and the rheological and microstructural characteristics of SFW/PA mixtures were evaluated. SFW/PA mixtures formed oil-in-water emulsions that were milky and opaque in appearance and were stable towards phase separation. Polarized micrographs revealed the presence of wax crystals, whose size decreased as pectin concentration increased. The rheological behavior of the aqueous solutions of pectin containing different amounts of SFW were best described by the generalized power law model …

Review Of The Book Positioning Technology Education In The Curriculum, Dan L. Householder May 2013

Review Of The Book Positioning Technology Education In The Curriculum, Dan L. Householder

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

This volume, part of Sense Publishers’ International Technology Education Series, is a collection of 16 presentations from the 2009 Pupils’ Attitudes Towards Technology (PATT) conference held in Delft, The Netherlands. The papers in this compilation have been reviewed and revised since their presentation at the conference, but most of them retain the relatively informal flavor of conference presentations. The papers rely heavily upon work completed by the authors in their respective settings, so the reader gets a sense of their personal experiences in program development, implementation, and research in the countries represented in the volume. It is fortunate that the …

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith May 2013

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Hired workers comprise 33 percent of people employed on farms but do an estimated 60 percent of the work performed on U.S. farms. Most hired farm workers were born abroad, usually in Mexico, and most are believed not to be authorized to work in the U.S. Changes in Mexico-US migration flows and more restrictive immigration laws and policies have increased the vulnerability of U.S. agriculture to labor supply shocks, which could increase costs and threaten the ability of some farmers to harvest laborintensive crops. Congress is considering major changes in immigration policies. Farm employers want access to a reliable supply …

Expectations And Preferences For Counseling And Psychotherapy In Native Americans, Mark Beitel, Ahkeyah Andrada Allahjah, Christopher J. Cutter, Ned Blackhawk, Theodore Van Alst, Declan T. Barry

Journal of Indigenous Research

We provide a broad overview of the research on expectations and preferences for counseling and psychotherapy with Native Americans and identify a critical lack of research in this area. We conclude that increased research could improve the effectiveness of counseling and psychotherapy for Native peoples. For example, understanding and engaging patients’ expectations and preferences would likely lead to increased retention and satisfaction. Finally, we suggest that a Native American clinical practice network might be one way to generate clinical and research knowledge in the area of expectations and preferences for psychotherapy and counseling.

Southward Continuation Of The San Jacinto Fault Zone Through And Beneath The Extra And Elmore Ranch Left-Lateral Fault Arrays, Southern California, Steven Jesse Thornock May 2013

Southward Continuation Of The San Jacinto Fault Zone Through And Beneath The Extra And Elmore Ranch Left-Lateral Fault Arrays, Southern California, Steven Jesse Thornock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Clark fault is a significant fault within the southern San Andreas fault system. The Clark fault abruptly ends where it intersects a second, smaller fault that crosses it called the Extra fault zone. In this study we investigate the possibility of the Clark fault continuing beneath and beyond the Extra fault zone. Based on field mapping and other geological data that we present, we determine that the Clark fault continues below the Extra fault and is not evident on the surface. Over time, earthquake slip along the Clark fault has caused the Extra fault zone to rotate in a …

Late Prehistoric Technology, Quartzite Procurement, And Land Use In The Upper Gunnison Basin, Colorado: View From Site 5gn1.2, Jonathan Mitchell Peart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis presents the results from archaeological test excavations at site 5GN1.2. The focus of this research is to evaluate Stiger’s Late Prehistoric settlement-subsistence hypothesis. According to Stiger, post-3000 B.P. occupations of the Upper Gunnison Basin were limited to big-game hunting forays originating from base camps located outside of the basin. Test excavations at 5GN1.2 documented archaeological deposits reflecting aboriginal occupation during the Late Prehistoric between about 3000 and 1300 years ago. Archaeological features include four hearths associated with abundant small-mammal remains, burnt plant seeds, stone tools and stone tool manufacturing debris.

Archaeological evidence rules out site 5GN1.2 as a …

An Environmental History Of The Bear River Range, 1860-1910, Bradley Paul Hansen May 2013

An Environmental History Of The Bear River Range, 1860-1910, Bradley Paul Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study of environmental history suggests that nature and culture change all the time, but that the rate and scale of such change can vary enormously. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Anglo settlement in the American West transformed landscapes and ecologies, creating new and complex environmental problems. This transformation was particularly impressive in Cache Valley, Utah's Bear River Range. From 1860 to 1910, Mormon settlers overused or misused the Bear River Range's lumber, grazing forage, wild game, and water resources and introduced invasive plant and animal species throughout the area.

By the turn of the 20th century, …

The Southeast In Context: An Assessment Of The Trauma Associated With Agriculture, Martin Welker May 2013

The Southeast In Context: An Assessment Of The Trauma Associated With Agriculture, Martin Welker

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Hunter-gatherer tradition prevailed as the dominant subsistence pattern for most of human history. Between 9,000 and 13,000 years ago peoples in the Levant, New World, and Asia began the domestication and cultivation of wild flora and fauna, creating a subsistence pattern that subsequently spread to neighboring regions (Abbo et al. 2010; Bellwood 2009; Purugganan & Fuller 2009; Richerson et al. 2001). The influence of this agricultural transition on human populations is manifested in various forms in the human skeleton, many of which have received intensive study: dental caries, degenerative joint disease, decreased stature, and increased birth rates (Bridges 1991; Larson …

The First Struggles Of The Capitalistic Peace And Its Detractors: An Analysis Of Greek Trade And Its Effects On Foreign Policy In The Athenian State, Joshua Blume May 2013

The First Struggles Of The Capitalistic Peace And Its Detractors: An Analysis Of Greek Trade And Its Effects On Foreign Policy In The Athenian State, Joshua Blume

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Although, a ubiquitous number of articles has arisen recently debating the validity of the so-called "Capitalist Peace," there has been little exploration of the theory from an ancient historical perspective, primarily due to the lack of trade data between countries or city-states. As the primordial birthplace of trade and democracy, there is perhaps no better example than ancient Greece to shed insight into the possible validity of the capitalist peace theory. Utilizing new research involving trade in ancient Greece, this paper seeks to explore the relative validity of the "Capitalist Peace" in ancient Greece by conducting a qualitative analysis of …

The Incorporation Of Deaf American Culture And History In Secondary Education Classrooms, James B. Smith May 2013

The Incorporation Of Deaf American Culture And History In Secondary Education Classrooms, James B. Smith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Bilingual-Bicultural Education (Bi-Bi) has a positive impact on language development and social-psychological development of Deaf children (Baker, 2011; Scott, 2010; Humphries & Humphries, 2010). This development is predicated on the child’s access to American Sign Language (ASL); however, the role of Deaf culture and history in Bi-Bi is not well-defined (Ladd, 2003). Children at Bi-Bi schools and programs often acquire cultural aspects through social interactions among their Deaf acquaintances rather than in the classroom. The socialization and cultural sensitivity of Deaf children does not constitute a formal instruction and mastery in all the elements of culture, as often believed in …

Cuban Missile Crisis: Applying Strategic Culture To Gametheory, Chelsea E. Carattini May 2013

Cuban Missile Crisis: Applying Strategic Culture To Gametheory, Chelsea E. Carattini

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Game theory applied to political situations offers a unique approach to analyzing and understanding international relations. Yet the rigid structure that lends itself so well to mathematics is not practical in the real world. It lacks a built in mechanism for determining a player's preferences, which is a key part of an international "game" or situation. Strategic culture, another international relations theory, is quite the opposite. Critics claim it suffers from a lack of structure, but it captures the spirit of international actors and what makes them tick. This paper explores the idea of pairing the two otherwise unrelated theories …

Land Use And Land Cover Dynamics Under Climate Change In Urbanizing Intermountain West: A Case Study From Cache County, Utah, Enjie Li May 2013

Land Use And Land Cover Dynamics Under Climate Change In Urbanizing Intermountain West: A Case Study From Cache County, Utah, Enjie Li

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Climate change is tightly linked with urbanization. Urban development with increasing greenhouse gas emission worsens climate change, while climate change in turn influence hydroclimate and ecosystem functions, and indirectly affect urban systems. The Intermountain West is experiencing rapid urban growth, climate change interacting with urbanization poses new challenges to the Intermountain West. Urban planning needs to adapt to these new changes and constrains, and to develop new tools and plans to effectively respond to climate changes. An urban growth model SLEUTH is applied to predict the future urban growth and land use dynamics in the Intermountain west, using Cache County …

Powder Mountain Bike Resort Master Plan, J. Dayton Crites May 2013

Powder Mountain Bike Resort Master Plan, J. Dayton Crites

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the last decade ski resorts worldwide have developed mountain bike specific recreational facilities in an effort to increase summer revenues. Their success has been mixed, with some becoming quite profitable, but others closing summer operations after only a few low revenue

years. With minimal information regarding bike park design currently available, the planning and design of these facilities remains largely a grassroots effort. This thesis project develops a methodology that approaches the creation of mountain bike resorts on ski mountain terrain based on landscape architectural best practices, sustainable trail

construction techniques, and site-specific requirements. For this project, the terrain …

Integrating Mathematics And Other Content Disciplines In The Elementary Classroom, Jessica Billingsley Apr 2013

Integrating Mathematics And Other Content Disciplines In The Elementary Classroom, Jessica Billingsley

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Curriculum integration is a growing trend in education. Researchers look at integration to alleviate the demand on educator’s time to teach while still meeting all core standards, whether they are state standards such as the Utah Core Standards or other standards such as Common Core State Standards. For my honors project I looked at curriculum integration applied to the elementary classroom setting. Having researched integration examples and best practices I created three lessons that were taught during my student teaching. My lessons met all Common Core State Standards and Utah Core Standards. Through an action research qualitative study I reflected …
