Reports
This publication reports the results of a municipal and industrial water use inventory. Data reported covers the period 1960 through 1976. Time series information is aggregated from municipal and industrial system level to country and state totals. Total municipal and industrial withdrawals are divided between surface and groundwater sources. Yearly per capital withdrawal rates are estimated for 50 Utah municipalities and for each of Utah’s 29 counties. Per capita withdrawal rates range from a high of over 400 gallons per capita per day (gcd) in the communities of Delta, Fillmore, Hyrum, Logan, and Morgan to a low of 100 gcd …

The Demography Of The Sagebrush Defoliator,Aroga Websteri Clarke (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), And Its Impact On Artemisia Tridentata, Anne Kristin Temte
Biology
The demography of the sagebrush defoliator, Aroga websteri Clarke, and its impact on the productivity of Artemisia tridentata were studied during 1974 and 1975. Four objectives were pursued: 1) to continue demographic studies begun in 1971 to determine causes for population fluctuations, 2) to correlate temperature and precipitation records from the study site with changes in the defoliator populations and with sagebrush quality, 3) to assess the impact of defoliator infestation on the subsequent productivity of Artemisia tridentata, and 4) to assess the long-term impact of severe defoliation on the survival and regrowth of Artemisia tridentata. The defoliator population was …
Plant Demographic Studies Of Tall Threetip Sagebrush-Grass Vegetation On The Eastern Snake River Plains, Idaho, Kenneth Harold Rea
Plant Demographic Studies Of Tall Threetip Sagebrush-Grass Vegetation On The Eastern Snake River Plains, Idaho, Kenneth Harold Rea
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It has commonly been assumed that grazing decreases the longevity of plants, however, very few studies address this question. Knowledge of mean age, longevity and other aspects of population dynamics would help improve estimates of productivity and nutrient cycling and aid understanding of range condition and trend. These data would also aid in developing a theory of community organization and control.
As a step toward these ends, pantograph records from twelve 1 m2 plots established at the U. S. Sheep Station on the Snake River Plains of southeastern Idaho between 1923 and 1935 were examined. The plots were mapped …
Plant Demographic Studies Of A Desert Annuals Community In Northern Utah Dominated By Nonnative Weedy Species, David R. Duba
Plant Demographic Studies Of A Desert Annuals Community In Northern Utah Dominated By Nonnative Weedy Species, David R. Duba
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Field and laboratory investigations were conducted relating to factors controlling distribution and abundance of annual species growing in a disturbed portion of the salt desert shrub zone on fine-textured soils. Dominant species on the site in the two study years were the nonnative, Halophytic, late-summer maturing, Halogeton glomeratus (Bieb.) C.A. Mey., and Bassia hyssopifolia (Pall.) Kuntze. Contrasting amounts of precipitation were received in the two years; in 1974, spring conditions were so dry that two early-maturing, sub-dominant annuals, Descurainia pinnata (walt.) Britton, and Lepidium perfoliatum L. were essentially absent. They successfully reproduced under more favorable 1975 conditions.
Studies on species …

Impact Of The Black-Tailed Jackrabbits (Lepus Californicus) On Vegetation In Curlew Valley, Northern Utah, Mark Westoby
Impact Of The Black-Tailed Jackrabbits (Lepus Californicus) On Vegetation In Curlew Valley, Northern Utah, Mark Westoby
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The interrelations of black-tailed jackrabbits and the desert-shrub vegetation on which they were feeding were studied in Curlew Valley, Northern Utah. The vegetation was described as a three-cornered continuum, the corners being types dominated respectively by Artemisia tridentata, Atriplex confertifolia, and Sarcobatus vermiculatus.
Jackrabbit diet was studied by microscopic analysis of plant fragments in stomachs from shot animals. The method was inaccurate, apparently because the ratio of identifiable tissues to all ingested tissues was very low, and varied between plant taxa, and seasonally. This problem seems intractable for desert shrub vegetation.
The diet was similar to that …

The Use Of Defensiveness As A Covariate Of Self-Report In The Assessment Of Self-Concept Among Navajo Adolescents, Bruce Leon Arneklev
The Use Of Defensiveness As A Covariate Of Self-Report In The Assessment Of Self-Concept Among Navajo Adolescents, Bruce Leon Arneklev
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study investigated the relationship between defensiveness scores and self-report scores as they interrelate in the assessment of self-concept and its change. Data were analyzed to determine if self-report scores adjusted by regression for defensiveness would be more congruent with a criterion measure than unadjusted scores.
A secondary problem was to evaluate the extent to which the self criticism scale on the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) and the self-report vs. objective rating discrepancy method would identify the same individuals as defensive.
Samples were drawn from a population of adolescent Navajo boarding school students. A treatment sample participated in an …

Ideal Size Of Family Among Unmarried Females In Northern Utah, Ronald B. Johnson
Ideal Size Of Family Among Unmarried Females In Northern Utah, Ronald B. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Preferences of the size of family and the relationship between the size of family and a number of socio-economic and demographic variables were studied among high school senior girls in three northern Utah counties by a special survey.
The questionnaire specifically designed for the study was administered between November 1967 and February 1968 in all high schools in Cache, Box Elder and Rich counties with the exception of Logan High School in Logan and Box Elder High School in Brigham City.
Two questions were used to elicit the answers on the preference of family size; one was designed to elicit …
Fertility And Family Planning Among Navajo Indian Recipients Of Public Welfare Assistance In Southeastern Utah, Gary Morris Shaffer
Fertility And Family Planning Among Navajo Indian Recipients Of Public Welfare Assistance In Southeastern Utah, Gary Morris Shaffer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A fertility and family planning survey was conducted among the recipients of pub lie welfare ass i stance in San Juan County, Utah. Two hundred twenty-five recipient families out of some 536 families on the list were interviewed during May and June of 1968 by nine graduate and undergraduate students in Sociology and Social Work with the help of Social Welfare workers and Navajo interpreters.
The study was primarily concerned with the following objectives: (1) to study the level and age patterns of fertility of a group of selected Navajo Indians, (2) to investigate the factors which might affect the …
