Mapping aspen genetics and mortality risk: the view from above

Benjamin Blonder

Phil Brodrick

Aspen genetics are a little more complex than human genetics. Humans are diploids, meaning we have two copies of each chromosome. Some aspen clones are diploid like us, but others are triploid, with three copies of each chromosome. Does ploidy level matter for the species’ ecology and management? Well, we know from work by Karen Mock (Utah State Univ.) and colleagues that diploids and triploids can be intermixed within a landscape. And we know that triploid clones tend to be bigger than diploids (Pando, for example, …

Timeliness Of Ehdi Benchmarks In Infants With A Nicu Admission Greater Than Five Days: Analysis From A Retrospective Cohort, Caitlin Sapp, Tammy O'Hollearn, Elizabeth Ann Walker

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

The purpose of this study was to examine the timeline of early hearing healthcare in infants with a history of lengthy (> 5 days) admission to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) compared to non-NICU peers. We compiled four years of state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) records from 156,335 infants using a statewide administrative database. We compared age at the time of newborn hearing screening, diagnostic audiological evaluation, and entry into early intervention in NICU infants and non-NICU infants. We also compared the proportion of NICU and non-NICU infants meeting prescriptive EHDI timing benchmarks based on the Joint …

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Objective: When children are identified with hearing loss, parents are often unsure about what they need to know. A Childhood Hearing Loss Question Prompt List for Parents (CHLQPL) was recently developed to help parents and providers address questions. This exploratory study investigated if parents who used the CHLQPL in their audiology appointment perceived their appointment as more person-centered than parents who received treatment as usual. Parent perceptions regarding use of the CHLQPL during the audiology appointment was also sought.

Design: Randomized control trial.

Study sample: Parents of children with permanent hearing loss (N=50).

Results: There were no statistically significant differences …

Getting Started With Home Visits: Recommendations For Serving Families Of Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Lauri H. Nelson, Samantha C. Gotcher, Lauren Smith

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

The successful implementation of newborn hearing screening programs across the United States has facilitated timely diagnosis of hearing loss and referral to early intervention (EI) services for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), thus increasing the potential for improved language development outcomes. As new parents engage in EI services that involve professionals entering their home, the effectiveness of the early interventionists’ engagement, knowledge, coaching skills, and ability to provide emotional support can substantially influence families’ experiences. This article provides graduate students and new early interventionists an overview of key concepts related to home-based EI services, …

South Dakota Parents’ Knowledge Of Congenital Cytomegalovirus, Its Long-Term Health Effects, And Methods For Minimizing Exposure, Felicia Reimann, Jessica Messersmith, Hannah Williams, Emily Riley

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Congenital CMV (cCMV) is acknowledged as one of the most common causes of nonhereditary sensorineural hearing loss and an important cause of neurodevelopmental delay in children. Despite the danger cCMV poses, many parents are unaware of the virus, its sequelae, mode of transmission, and preventative behaviors. The purpose of the study was to determine South Dakota parents’ knowledge of cCMV, its sequelae, and ways to minimize exposure.

An electronic survey was utilized for data collection. Parents of children born in South Dakota from 2011 to 2018 were asked about their knowledge of CMV and cCMV, including common sequelae and ways …

Eutrophication is a widespread environmental change that usually reduces the stabilizing effect of plant diversity on productivity in local communities. Whether this effect is scale dependent remains to be elucidated. Here, we determine the relationship between plant diversity and temporal stability of productivity for 243 plant communities from 42 grasslands across the globe and quantify the effect of chronic fertilization on these relationships. Unfertilized local communities with more plant species exhibit greater asynchronous dynamics among species in response to natural environmental fluctuations, resulting in greater local stability (alpha stability). Moreover, neighborhood communities that have greater spatial variation in plant species …

On Correctness, Precision, And Performance In Quantitative Verification: Qcomp 2020 Competition Report, Carlos E. Budde, Arnd Hartmanns, Michaela Klauck, Jan Křetínský, David Parker, Tim Quatmann, Andrea Turrini, Zhen Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Quantitative verification tools compute probabilities, expected rewards, or steady-state values for formal models of stochastic and timed systems. Exact results often cannot be obtained efficiently, so most tools use floating-point arithmetic in iterative algorithms that approximate the quantity of interest. Correctness is thus defined by the desired precision and determines performance. In this paper, we report on the experimental evaluation of these trade-offs performed in QComp 2020: the second friendly competition of tools for the analysis of quantitative formal models. We survey the precision guarantees - ranging from exact rational results to statistical confidence statements - offered by the nine …

Effect Of Three Classroom Research Experiences On Science Attitudes, Lauren K. Lucas, Frances K. Hunter, Zachariah Gompert Oct 2020

Effect Of Three Classroom Research Experiences On Science Attitudes, Lauren K. Lucas, Frances K. Hunter, Zachariah Gompert

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Here we evaluate undergraduate student attitudes about science after each of three authentic research experiences in a semester of an introductory biology laboratory course at Utah State University. The three course-based research experiences (CUREs) vary in length and student freedom, and they cover different areas of biology. Students responded to the science attitude items of the CURE Survey. When compared to national data, our students faired similarly, and all students struggled with certain epistemic assumptions about science knowledge. As also seen in the national database, change in science attitude was slight and nonlinear. Student self confidence in what a career …

Taking Into Account Interpersonal Aspects Of Teacher Feedback: Principles Of Responding To Student Writing, Elena Shvidko Oct 2020

Taking Into Account Interpersonal Aspects Of Teacher Feedback: Principles Of Responding To Student Writing, Elena Shvidko

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Providing feedback on student work is a fundamental aspect of instruction and an important part of the learning process. A considerable amount of literature describes the pedagogical value of different types of feedback—explicit vs. implicit, comprehensive vs. selective, direct vs. indirect, and feedback on content vs. feedback on form—thus treating feedback primarily as an instructional/informational phenomenon. It must be remembered, however, that there is a real person behind each paper; therefore, interpersonal aspects of teacher feedback should not be disregarded. This article discusses five principles of responding to student writing that take into account this interpersonal nature of feedback: providing …

Assessing Student Performance Using Video Recordings In Field-Based Experiences, Karen D. Hager, Barbara J. Fiechtl, Summer Gunn

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Field-based experiences are vital components of many undergraduate programs. However, assessing student performance in these settings can be challenging. Video-based observation is an approach to providing performance feedback that addresses these challenges and may also provide benefits not inherent in live observations. Using examples from our teacher preparation programs, we (a) explain the benefits and challenges of using video recordings in field-based experiences; (b) identify the video recording platform we use; (c) describe specific examples in our program, including supervisor performance feedback to preservice teachers, peer feedback/coaching, and instructor feedback on in-home family coaching; and (d) address the logistics of …

Challenges And Opportunities In Near-Threshold Dnn Accelerators Around Timing Errors, Pramesh Pandey, Noel Daniel Gundi, Prabal Basu, Tahmoures Shabanian, Mitchell Craig Patrick, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

AI evolution is accelerating and Deep Neural Network (DNN) inference accelerators are at the forefront of ad hoc architectures that are evolving to support the immense throughput required for AI computation. However, much more energy efficient design paradigms are inevitable to realize the complete potential of AI evolution and curtail energy consumption. The Near-Threshold Computing (NTC) design paradigm can serve as the best candidate for providing the required energy efficiency. However, NTC operation is plagued with ample performance and reliability concerns arising from the timing errors. In this paper, we dive deep into DNN architecture to uncover some unique challenges …

Trophic Structure Of Apex Fish Communities In Closed Versus Leaky Lakes Of Arctic Alaska, Stephen L. Klobucar, Phaedra Budy Oct 2020

Trophic Structure Of Apex Fish Communities In Closed Versus Leaky Lakes Of Arctic Alaska, Stephen L. Klobucar, Phaedra Budy

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite low species diversity and primary production, trophic structure (e.g., top predator species, predator size) is surprisingly variable among Arctic lakes. We investigated trophic structure in lakes of arctic Alaska containing arctic char Salvelinus alpinus using stomach contents and stable isotope ratios in two geographically-close but hydrologically-distinct lake clusters to investigate how these fish may interact and compete for limited food resources. Aside from different lake connectivity patterns (‘leaky’ versus ‘closed’), differing fish communities (up to five versus only two species) between lake clusters allowed us to test trophic hypotheses including: (1) arctic char are more piscivorous, and thereby grow …

Will The Last Archivist In Seattle Please Turn Out The Lights: Value And The National Archives, Megan E. Llewellyn, Sarah A. Buchanan

Journal of Western Archives

With the abrupt announcement in late January 2020 that the National Archives at Seattle–placed on 10 acres in the Sand Point neighborhood since 1963–would be "eventually" closed and the records moved to facilities in Riverside, California and Kansas City, Missouri, the surprised dismay from state archivists, researchers, and Native American tribal leaders and Alaska Natives who see their ancestors and heritage directly depicted in the records was quick and loud. The facility holds one million cubic feet of federal records which are accessed by over 700 people visiting its research rooms, and which grow by about 1300 cubic feet annually. …

Bear River Health Department: Covid-19 Contact Tracing, Mike Dixon, Zach Rusk Oct 2020

Bear River Health Department: Covid-19 Contact Tracing, Mike Dixon, Zach Rusk

Huntsman School of Business Teaching Scholarship Series

This case introduces students to a highly variable process that has uncertain demand and processing times. It describes the contact tracing efforts as a response to positive Covid-19 cases in a rural health district in the state of Utah during the first 9 months of the pandemic of 2020. The case puts students in the shoes of the managing director of a health department trying to decide how to best manage a team of contact tracers who are increasingly unable to timely complete their work that is vital to stopping the spread of the disease.

“The Path Of Dictatorship”: The Erosion Of Democracy And Capitalism In Late Nineteenth-Century Mexico And Colombia*, James E. Sanders Oct 2020

“The Path Of Dictatorship”: The Erosion Of Democracy And Capitalism In Late Nineteenth-Century Mexico And Colombia*, James E. Sanders

History Faculty Publications

The first erosion of democracy in Latin America did not occur in the twentieth-century, but, rather, the nineteenth. I will argue that in Mexico and Colombia a vibrant, democratic political culture had emerged by the 1850s; however, by the 1870s, a political movement that united Liberals and Conservatives began to suspect that the democratic politics they had once regarded as making them modern was instead hindering their societies’ progress. Democracy was not promoting, but, rather, hindering economic progress. This essay will explore the historic relation between capitalism (as Latin America entered into a period of export-oriented capitalist growth) and democracy …

Titan: Uncovering The Paradigm Shift In Security Vulnerability At Near-Threshold Computing, Prabal Basu, Pramesh Pandey, Aatreyi Bal, Chidhambaranathan Rajamanikkam, Koushik Chakraborty, Sanghamitra Roy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we investigate the emerging security threats at Near-Threshold Computing (NTC) that are poised to jeopardize the trustworthy operation of future low-power electronic devices. A substantial research effort over the last decade has bolstered energy efficient operation in low-power computing. However, innovation in low-power security has received only marginal attention, thwarting a ubiquitous adoption of critical Internet of Things applications, such as wearable gadgets. Using a cross-layer methodology, we demonstrate that the timing fault vulnerability of a circuit rapidly increases as the operating conditions of the transistor devices shift from super-threshold to near-threshold values. Exploiting this vulnerability, we …

Woody Plant Growth Increases With Precipitation Intensity In A Cold Semiarid System, Martin C. Holdrege, Karen H. Beard, Andrew Kulmatiski Oct 2020

Woody Plant Growth Increases With Precipitation Intensity In A Cold Semiarid System, Martin C. Holdrege, Karen H. Beard, Andrew Kulmatiski

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

As the atmosphere warms, precipitation events become larger, but less frequent. Yet, there is fundamental disagreement about how increased precipitation intensity will affect vegetation. Walter's two-layer hypothesis and experiments testing it have demonstrated that precipitation intensity can increase woody plant growth. Observational studies have found the opposite pattern. Not only are the patterns contradictory, but inference is largely limited to grasslands and savannas. We tested the effects of increased precipitation intensity in a shrub-steppe ecosystem that receives >30% of its precipitation as snow. We used 11 (8 × 8 m) shelters to collect and redeposit rain and snow as larger, …
