Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Coefficients In Three-Way, T-Port, Ball Valve, Tyler A. Mindrum Aug 2026

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Flow Coefficients In Three-Way, T-Port, Ball Valve, Tyler A. Mindrum

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Many systems that move fluids, like water distribution networks and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, rely on valves to control flow. This study evaluates a three-way valve, which can direct flow in multiple directions, but has not been extensively researched. Testing included physical data collection and computer simulations to compare how the valves behaved under different valve openings and flow conditions. The results showed that computer simulations can predict the general flow behavior of three-way valves, but that physical testing is still important, especially for valves with complex internal geometries.

Comparative Analysis Of Strain-To-Velocity Conversion Methods For Active-Source Das Data And Collocated Nodal Stations, Prajwal Panthi, Brady R. Cox

Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) provides dense spatial measurements of the dynamic strain along fiber optic cables, offering high-resolution wave sensing for ground motion monitoring and subsurface imaging applications. However, DAS records the axial strain or strain rate, whereas traditional seismic and engineering ground motion equipment and derived metrics are based on particle displacement, velocity, or acceleration, necessitating reliable strain-to-velocity conversion methods. This study evaluates three widely used conversion approaches: the fk-rescaling, curvelet-based conversion, and slant-stack methods. These approaches are applied to a unique high-energy, near-field, active-source dataset collected at the Birds Landing Site in Sherman Island, California. The dataset includes …

Nozzle Erosion Reconstruction Model For Data Analysis In Rocket Engines And Correlation With Chamber Pressure, Ryan J. Thibaudeau, Stephen A. Whitmore

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

Graphite nozzles remain the dominant choice for small hybrid and solid rocket motors operating on laboratory and university budgets, owing to their low cost, ease of machining, and rapid turnaround during iterative design campaigns. These same programs, however, must contend with the fact that graphite erodes through coupled thermochemical and mechanical mechanisms when exposed to the oxidizing species generated by high-energy propellant combustion, and the resulting throat-area growth fundamentally alters the time histories of chamber pressure, thrust, and delivered specific impulse. This paper presents a nozzle-erosion reconstruction model that extracts the time-resolved throat area from coupled thrust and chamber-pressure measurements …

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

In remote sensing of the Earth system, accuracy is key for developing reliable, long-term environmental data records built from data collected by multiple instruments, for quickly detecting trends in the quantities being observed, and for determining the confidence with which conclusions can be drawn from those data. For sensors measuring light in the reflected solar wavelengths from Earth orbit, measurement accuracy has historically been limited by the techniques used in calibration (e.g., using onboard lamps and/or solar diffusers that increase instrument mass/complexity and degrade over time, or viewing ground sites through the Earth’s atmosphere, requiring an additional correction, etc.). The …

Image Uniformity Evaluation Of Landsat Oli Using Detector Overlap Statistics Of Earth Scenes, Raviv Levy, Cibele Teixeira Pinto, Jeffrey A. Miller, Kurtis Thome

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) instruments on Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 collect hundreds of Earth scenes per day, covering a wide mix of surface types and signal levels. This report demonstrates that detector overlap statistics can be used to directly characterize non-uniformity at the focalplane boundary zones inherent to the OLI focalplane design and correct for these non-uniformities in image data products. Detector pairs of coregistered pixels within boundary zone represent measurements of the same ground target collected at the same time but with minor view angle differences. The use of multiple pairs of detectors offers varying scene types …

Development Of A Software-Based Lock-In Amplifier With Linearity Of 0.004 % (K=2) Using A 24-Bit, Fpga-Based Digitizer, Howard W. Yoon, Michael P. Braine, Vladimir Khromchenko Jun 2026

Development Of A Software-Based Lock-In Amplifier With Linearity Of 0.004 % (K=2) Using A 24-Bit, Fpga-Based Digitizer, Howard W. Yoon, Michael P. Braine, Vladimir Khromchenko

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Lock-in amplifiers (LIA) are used to measure signals from noisy sources or detectors and for measuring AC-mode devices such as pyroelectric detectors. In infrared radiometry, LIAs are often used in both detector and radiometer calibrations where gain linearity directly impacts the measurement uncertainties. In applications such as BRDF measurements where large signal ratios are used to determine reflectance factors, knowledge of LIA linearities is critical since large signal ratios much be known with very low uncertainties.

At present, most commercial LIAs are limited by their 16-bit or 18-bit amplitude resolution, maximum input voltage of 1 V and nearly 1 % …
