Influences Of Exposure On Pan Evaporation In A Mountainous Area, Eugene L. Peck Jan 1967

Influences Of Exposure On Pan Evaporation In A Mountainous Area, Eugene L. Peck

Reports

The effects of exposure on pan evaporation rates were studied at the Davis County Experimental Watershed near Farmington, Utah, by operating a network of 12 class A evaporation stations on the watershed during the summer months of 1962 through 1966. Standard Weather Bureau observations on a daily basis were obtained from a total of 17 different sites representing widely idverse topography with a vertical range of 4, 630 feet. Deviations from mean relations with elevation on monthly values of observed meteorological factors were found to be related to the type of exposure. Dewpoint observations on different slopes were found to …

Reports

Summary: Groundwater development frequently provides a means whereby tremendous new economic opportunities are opened up. If supplies are overdrawn (mined) the ensuing regional economy may be able to affort replacements from more costly sources. In the United States the Salt River Valley of Arizona and the valleys of California provide examples. Two cases are treated in this paper, Israel and West Pakistan. In Israel, besides furnishing more than half of the basic source of water suppply, groundwater development provides opportunity for both quantity and quality management, which makes possible use of surface supplies and reclaimed sewage as firm rather than …

Graduate Recital, Carl L. Ashby May 1966

Graduate Recital, Carl L. Ashby

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The writer, in preparing for the recital , was concerned mainly with the following objectives:

1. To improve his own ability to perform well with the vocal instrument.

2. To find new avenues of approach to the problem of teaching correct vocal methods in the classroom.

It is the belief of the writer that if one does not continue to study and learn of the many problems that arise in teaching the vocal art , he will not perform well as a teacher of that, or any, art. The writer is sure that if he had not continued his studies …

Use Of Uric Acid Analysis To Evaluate Chalcid Infestation In Alfalfa Seed, Gary M. Booth May 1966

Use Of Uric Acid Analysis To Evaluate Chalcid Infestation In Alfalfa Seed, Gary M. Booth

Biology

The production of alfalfa seed is a major agricultural industry in various parts of the world, including the United States. One of the most serious pests of alfalfa seed is the alfalfa seed chalcid, Bruchophagus roddi Gussakovsii. The female chalcid destroys the seed by ovipositing in young alfalfa seed that is about nine days old. The egg hatches into a white larva in about four days. During the course of larval development, it devours virtually everything in the seed. When the chalcid completes its last or fourth larval instar, the insect may follow one of two alternatives of development: (1) …

Bioassay Evaluation Of Heptachlor, Telodrin And Diazinon Using Cache Valley Populations Of The Alfalfa Weevil, Lan Lin Wu May 1966

Bioassay Evaluation Of Heptachlor, Telodrin And Diazinon Using Cache Valley Populations Of The Alfalfa Weevil, Lan Lin Wu

Biology

The alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal), is an insect of European origin which by some unknown means was introduced into Utah (Titus 1910). It is the most destructive pest of alfalfa in the United States although locally others may be more serious. The female inserts her eggs into the alfalfa stems during the spring months. The larvae feed on the developing leaf buds and the leaves, often completely stripping the plants. The weevil destroys from seven to eight percent of the alfalfa in Utah each year. It costs alfalfa growers in the United States several millions of dollars in annual …

Topography Of The Cephalic Musculature And Nervous System Of The Honey Bee Apis Mellifera Linnaeus, Nabil N. Youssef May 1966

Topography Of The Cephalic Musculature And Nervous System Of The Honey Bee Apis Mellifera Linnaeus, Nabil N. Youssef

Biology

Fixed heads of workers, drones and queens of Apis mellifera Linnaeus were dissected under distilled water for the study of two tissues: the musculature and the nerve mass. Musculature: The movable and fixed points of muscle attachment were utilized in establishing a nomenclature for muscles to replace those in current usage which depend on various combination of topography, function, and numerical sequence. The present system proved to be consistent and useful for demonstrating the criteria of homology among muscles. Names were devised in classical Greek and Latin for international usage. For establishing muscle homology, every cephalic muscle of the …

Biology

Euphytomima nomiivora James is a sarcophagid fly belonging to the sub-family Miltogramminae . It was first found as a parasite of the alkali bee in Logan, Utah in 1947 by Dr. George E. Bohart who sent several specimens to Dr. Maurice James of Washington State University for determination. Dr. James (1955) described it as a new genus and species but noted that it had previously been collected from other localities such as Imperial County, California and Globe, Arizona. In Logan it was found at an alkali bee nesting site near the Cache-Logan Airport. Later it was introduced to an artificial …

Behavioral And Physiological Changes In House Mice Associated With Sound Deprivation, Clifford A. Meyers May 1966

Behavioral And Physiological Changes In House Mice Associated With Sound Deprivation, Clifford A. Meyers

Biology

The development of sensory organs for the reception of external stimuli has clearly been of importance in the evolution of animal life. In part, through natural selection, these organs have increased in complexity and efficiency to the present level seen in mammals and birds. Differences in the physical nature of the sensory stimuli facilitated the development of specifically different organs, each mode of stimulation being of some importance to the animal; yet the relative importance of these modalities depended and depends on the animal-habitat unit.

Estimation Of Irregular Spacing On Sugar Beets And Its Effect On Their Chemical Measurements And Weight, Ahmad Ali Aghabeigi May 1966

Estimation Of Irregular Spacing On Sugar Beets And Its Effect On Their Chemical Measurements And Weight, Ahmad Ali Aghabeigi

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In an attempt to improve the yield and quality of the sugar beet, many problems arise as to the effect of "growing space" on the individual beets. Large quantities of chemical data can be collected on individual beets and the problem of reducing this data to a suitable and understandable effect of space on the chemical data needs investigating. In the past this reduction process has been accomplished by slow hand calculation methods , thus making it virtually impossible for the scientist to analyze and propose corrective measures at the time they are needed . With the use of high …

The Comparative Costs Of Processing Frozen Sour Cherries, Utah County, Utah, 1964, Richard K. Hart May 1966

The Comparative Costs Of Processing Frozen Sour Cherries, Utah County, Utah, 1964, Richard K. Hart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since 1905 when Professor Henry C. Taylor opened the area of economies of scale for discussion with his observations on the variables affecting farm size, agricultural economists have been concerned with scale of plant in agriculture. Considerable study and discussion have not resolved many of the questions raised in this area, but a basic framework has been constructed which can be used as a planning tool in the efficient organization and operation of plants of various sizes under given conditions.

Transfer Restrictions And Misallocation Of Irrigation Water, Herbert H. Fullerton May 1966

Transfer Restrictions And Misallocation Of Irrigation Water, Herbert H. Fullerton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water is among the most abundant of all materials known to man. In all its various forms, water covers 75 percent of the earth's surface. It is estimated that the total physical quantity of water on the earth is 326,000,000 cubic miles. This apparent abundance belies the true nature of the water resource as it relates to the needs of man. At any given point in time, only a rather minute portion of this vast quantity of water is found in those forms and locations which render it useful to man. This may be attributed to the fact that utility …

The Complex Formation Of Silver Ion With Ribonucleic Acid, Guanosine, Inosine And Related Compounds And Peroxidase-Like Activity Of A Haemundecapeptide Prepared From Horse Heart Cytochrome C, José Angel Reinosa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The importance of nucleic acids in plant and animal cells as carriers of genetic information and as protein biosynthesis agents is well recognized. It is also known that nucleic acid is a component of all viruses.

Takahashi (45) and Fraenkel-Conrat (16) demonstrated that the protein component of tobacco mosaic virus is non-infectious to the host plant, although it is identical to the original virus morphologically. The virus ribonucleic acid (RNA) alone was infectious, however.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is present in chromosomes, displays a very specific function. The chromosome long has been accepted as the carrier of the hereditary unit, …

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton May 1966

The Preschool Child's Concept Of God, Linda Thompson Saxton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The setting is a cheerful nursery school room bustling with activity and lively three and four year old children. Sally, Tom, and Dick are building with blocks and are busily engaged in conversation regarding who is "boss" of the project.

"I'm the boss," states Sally emphatically.

''No, I'm the boss." retorts Dick with just as much enthusiasm.

"Did you know that God is boss of the whole world?" questions Tom thoughtfully. So we see one more example of the tremendous task of reaching for and of gathering in facts and experiences in the environment in order to create some semblance …

A Program For Hospitalized Children, Leslie Joan Bishop May 1966

A Program For Hospitalized Children, Leslie Joan Bishop

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

When children are hospitalized they are exposed to an unfamiliar and frequently forboding world of an efficiently run institution. They cannot, as adults do, afford to interrupt (Plant, 1962) their normal way of living and exclude the relationships, play and learning that contribute to their overall growth.

There is a general tendency for children to be treated much in the same manner that adults are when they are confined in a hospital situation. The adult (Chapman, 1956) is prepared to make this temporary adjustment because he is aware, to some extent, of the need for hospitalization and the positive consequence …

Streaming Current And Streaming Potential Induced By Water Flow Through Porous Media, Mohamed M. I. Abaza May 1966

History Of Snow College 1932-1951, Lee R. Thompson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Knowing the past provides many of the ingredients that help to make conditions as they are today and as they might become tomorrow, the author became interested in these ingredients which helped to develop the educational institution known as Snow College. This search for knowledge led the writer to believe there was also a need to preserve some basic factual information about this school and present it as a history. This project, therefore, becomes an effort in the development of such a historical document.

The Use Of Amprolium In Controlling Coccidiosis In Lambs, Joseph E. Kuta May 1966

The Use Of Amprolium In Controlling Coccidiosis In Lambs, Joseph E. Kuta

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Young lambs are subject to severe infections with coccidiosis, which cause weight loss, morbidity, woolbreaking, and death (Christensen, 1940b; Shumard, 1957; Lotze, 1959; Smith et al., 1960). Dunlap et al. (1949) have shown that the adult sheep are reservoir hosts and are a constant source of infection to lambs. Outbreaks of coccidial infections, especially under feedlot conditions, are frequent (Newsom and Cross, 1931; Piras, 1934; Deem and Thorp, 1940; Mahrt and Sherrick, 1965).

A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen May 1966

A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bugelski and Sharlock (1952) credit McGeoch with saying that although the concept of mediation was an old one, it had generated more discussion than experimentation. Bugelski and Sharlock in commenting on McGeoch's statements had this to say, "The concept of mediation is of great potential value for the psychological analysis of learning, thinking, and insight." (Bugelski and Sharlock, 1952, p. 334) The views of Bugelski and Sharlock represent the current thinking in verbal learning circles relevant to the importance of mediation in symbolic forms of behavior. The experimental emphasis, at the present time, is upon the conditions underlying the process. …

A Historical Survey Of The Economic Development Of Mainland China, 1949-1962, Mandhatasinh A. Chauhan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chinese agriculture differs from the Western agriculture in the development and utilization of agricultural science on the fields. China has always been an agricultural country, but she failed to improve in techniques of cultivation as the time passed by. The land, prior to the Communist take-over, was owned and cultivated by individuals and the produce was sold in a free-market. Unfortunately, the Chinese government, prior to 1949, failed to bring about adequate agricultural reforms and implement economic development measures.

As a result an overwhelming proportion of the population of China is occupied on the land, the supply of which is …

Simultaneous Flow Of Heat And Water In Plant Tissue, Gaylon Sanford Campbell May 1966

Simultaneous Flow Of Heat And Water In Plant Tissue, Gaylon Sanford Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although biological phenomena may be partially described in a general way without the use of mathematics and physics, the experimental results may be more meaningful if they are analyzed on the basis of physical and mathematical laws. The complexity of biological systems has made the application to them of mathematics and physics rather difficult, and only recently has much progress been made. Although it has yet been possible to describe only a few simple biological systems by actual equations, a great deal of qualitative information may be obtained by applying physics and mathematics. Russell (1960, p. 439) said

The Economic Value Of Forage For Livestock On Public And Private Ranges In Utah, Mardell D. Topham May 1966

The Economic Value Of Forage For Livestock On Public And Private Ranges In Utah, Mardell D. Topham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The United States Government controls about 359 million acres of land in the 11 Western States. This vast acreage produces recreation for vacationers, timber for lumbermen, water for city and rural consumption, forage for livestock and wildlife, and minerals for miners. In many cases, the users of these products are competing and are clamoring for a large share of this land. Consequently, land use is continually changing. Since 1941, the amount of timber cut has tripled, recreation has doubled, watersheds now yield a better quality of water (Clawson, 1957), forage for wildlife has increased but forage for livestock use has …

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco May 1966

Selecting Optimum Conversion Practices In The Pinyon-Juniper Type, Richard J. Marasco

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A profit criterion which will make possible the selection of optimum conversion practices in the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands can be made operational if: (a) it is possible to predict eradication costs and resulting total costs (eradication costs, seed costs, and seed application costs), and (b) it is possible to determine for age production resulting from initial eradication, as well as when it reaches absolute minimum allowable limit due to tree re-growth. Knowledge of the above relationships makes it possible to determine the optimum practice.

The Effect Of Soil Adsorbents On The Thermodynamic Properties Of Soil Water System, Taghi Manbeian May 1966

The Effect Of Soil Adsorbents On The Thermodynamic Properties Of Soil Water System, Taghi Manbeian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been generally recognized that the surface phenomena of the solid particles such as shrinking and swelling, water- holding capacity, water' movement, and cation exchange are important in understanding the physical properties of the soil. Clay is the most prevalent material in the colloidal fraction of many soils. Because of the complex nature of the surface of clays and the small size of the particles, the direct study of surface phenomena is difficult. Thermodynamic functions change in accordance with changes and organization within the system. Thus, an examination of the thermodynamics of surface phenomena provides some understanding of the …
