Systems Analysis Of Hydrologic Problems, J. Paul Riley, Diana Averett
Systems Analysis Of Hydrologic Problems, J. Paul Riley, Diana Averett
Reports
Introduction: Increasing national and international interest in water resources in recent years has stimulated much new activity and progress in hydrology. It is now generally recognized that the science of hydrology is basic to an understanding of water resources problems and to planning for water resources development. Accompanying this demand upon the science of hydrology is an urgent need for improved education at the university level. In resopnse to this need for improved education, the First International Seminar for Hydrology Professors was held at Urbana, Illinois, in July 1969. The Second International Seminar was held at Logan, Utah, during August …

An Examination Of Approximately Simultaneous Salt Lake Valley And Cache Valley Clearing (Ventilation) Indexes, George W. Reynolds, William Mcneill, Floyd Johnson, Janet Cleary
Reports
The Clearing Index is a numerical estimate of the contamination dispersal capability of the atmosphere. Between July, 1969, and June, 1970, 192 rawinsonde flights were made in the Cache Valley at approximately the same time as officially scheduled flights at the Salt Lake City Weather Bureau Airport Station. Clearing Indexes were computed from various combinations of Salt Lake Valley and Cache Valley rawinsonde and maximum surface temperature data. These were examined from the viewpoint of recommending a standard procedure for providing Clearing Indexes on a daily basis for Intermountain valleys. The primary conclusions were that: 1. Actual Salt Lake Valley …

Statistical Relationships Between Storm And Urban Watershed Characteristics, V. V. Dhruva Narayana, M. Akbar Sial, J. Paul Riley, Eugene K. Israelsen
Reports
Because of the rapid urban development in recent years, hydrologic problems associated with urban watersheds have gained importance. Large sums of money are being spent for the design of urban drainage systems based upon inadequate procedures for predicting peak runoff rates. In this report a procedure is proposed for predicting peak runoff rates from small urban and rural watersheds based upon measurable storm and watersheds characteristics. The technique was tested for a number of runoff events on the Boneyard Creek watershed at Urbana, Illinois, and the results of this test are included. The procedure will be particularly useful for estimating …
Optimizing Conjunctive Use Of Groundwater And Surface Water, James H. Milligan, Calvin G. Clyde
Optimizing Conjunctive Use Of Groundwater And Surface Water, James H. Milligan, Calvin G. Clyde
Reports
Mathematical models for groundwater and surface-water systems are formulated and solved on a digital computer using linear programming for optimizing the water use of the system. Post-optimal analysis, including sensitivity analysis of the objective function coefficients and right-hand side terms, is also applied to the models. The models which are developed include a general deterministic model, a general stochastic model in which hydrologic inputs are allowed to be probabilistic, and models of two simple, but real, river basins. The advantages of linear programming analysis are demonstrated by the computer solutions which can be obtained by this method of optimization. The …

To some extent, each person is his own doctor, his own economist, his own historian, his own counselor, his own psychologist, and his own teacher.
It is said that a man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Can the same be said of a man's other roles? At least for learning (which professionally intersects education and psychology) any person may have the goal of helping himself to appreciate and evaluate the role of the learning professional.
A knowledge explosion has taken place in the area of learning, as in the many fields of science in …
The Case For Town And Country Planning, Allen Lebaron
The Case For Town And Country Planning, Allen Lebaron
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
In many ways town and country planning is an exceedingly old science or art. Nineva, Babylon, and Damascus were (or are) planned cities and as long as 3,000 B.C. worker's villages in areas near the sites of the great pyramids were carefully laid out. Miletus was an example of town planning by the ancient Greeks and or course the Romans were notable and conspicuous planners.

A Quantitative Study Of The Pathways For Estrogen Biosynthesis In Normal And Transplanted Ovaries, Carl A. Perrin
A Quantitative Study Of The Pathways For Estrogen Biosynthesis In Normal And Transplanted Ovaries, Carl A. Perrin
Biology
This investigation attempts to determine the relative importance of the two most widely accepted pathways for the biosynthesis of estrogens namely the Δ4 pathway and the Δ5 pathway. These pathways were compared in both normal and transplanted ovarian tissue using the double isotope dilution technique with 7⍺-H3-pregnenolone and 4-C14-progesterone. The effects of ovarian transplants into peripheral tissue on steroid biosynthesis in vitro, uterine weights, adrenal weights, thymus weights, and estrus cycles in vivo were noted. One ovary from each animal was transplanted to the dorsal aspect of the ear while the other ovary …
A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic Approach To Transport Processes In Nitella Clavata, Thomas H. Strunk
A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic Approach To Transport Processes In Nitella Clavata, Thomas H. Strunk
Biology
From the general theory of irreversible thermodynamics, equations were developed describing transport across natural membranes. The formulation established the criterion of irreversibility and illustrated the origin of the linear thermodynamic rate equations. With the assumptions of local equilibrium and the steady state, transport equations were formulated in terms of membrane parameters that are accessible to measurement. Experiments to determine these parameters were performed on the cells of the fresh water algae Nitella clavata. Values for the membrane conductance, the ionic transference numbers for Na, K and Cl, the membrane potentials and the contribution of active transport are reported. This …
Investigations On Alfalfa Weevil Damage To Selected Alfalfas, Lewis B. Coons
Investigations On Alfalfa Weevil Damage To Selected Alfalfas, Lewis B. Coons
Biology
The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop methods of screening alfalfas for weevil damage, (2) to survey available alfalfas for susceptible and non-susceptible breeding lines, and (3) to determine if certain characteristics of alfalfas are related to the number of alfalfa weevil larvae present. Five methods of screening alfalfas were studied. Oviposition damage was determined by removing a given number of stems to the laboratory where the number of oviposition holes per stem were tabulated. Feeding damage was determined by rating each alfalfa plant according to a scale that ranked alfalfa weevil feeding damage to individual plants. Larval …

Factors Affecting Mourning Dove Use Of Water In Artificial Catchment Basins In A Dryland Farming Area Of Utah, Norman A. Slade
Factors Affecting Mourning Dove Use Of Water In Artificial Catchment Basins In A Dryland Farming Area Of Utah, Norman A. Slade
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The mourning dove population of the Howell-Blue Creek Watershed in northern Utah was studied by Norman Slade in an effort to determine why many more doves frequented certain of the 20 fiberglass catchment basins installed in the area.
More doves used basins on the west side of the valley, probably as a result of temperature differences. More doves used those basins surrounded by more land in summer fallow and with fewer basins nearby. Areas in sagebrush were used for nesting.
The number of doves drinking in a particular hour was affected by the presence of predators or antagonists but not …
