Report On Current Data And Uses Of Interstellar Molecules, Joe Hillegas Jan 1977

Report On Current Data And Uses Of Interstellar Molecules, Joe Hillegas

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The problem presented by polyatomic molecules in interstellar space were first suggested by the detection of CN, CH, and CH+ just before 1940; but it was not until the discovery of radio emission from NH3 in 1968 that radio observatories began to devote considerable time to searches for such molecules. The quest has been an extremely successful one, with well over thirty molecules listed to date and more being added to the collection every month. (The list in the appendix gives some idea of the discoveries, but makes no boast as to its completeness.)

Down At The Hospital, Glenn E. Dickey Jan 1977

Down At The Hospital, Glenn E. Dickey

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Down at the hospital the other day the ambulance brought us an old German lady who had fallen down on Main Street. We admitted her in east wing and found no bodily damage, but did discover that she was thoroughly drunk. We removed her warmed-over cabbage tennis shoes and were in the process of replacing her Salvation Army discount dress with a hospital gown when three or four bags of Hershey's chocolate kisses fell out from some hidden foyer of her person. All the while she was yelling about her husband's federal pension and how her bishop and the police …

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen Jan 1977

Survey Of The History, Development, And Medical Uses Of Chinese Acupuncture, Kendell G. Hansen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is difficult to pick up a magazine, medical or otherwise, that does not include an article about the Chinese method of diagnosis and treatment known as acupuncture. This ancient technique, about which there is so much current interest, is reputed to have originated nearly 30 centuries ago when a Chinese warrior emperor made the observation that certain arrow wounds caused pain to disappear in remote parts of the body.

During World War II, the new China of the Red Army rediscovered the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of wounded or sick soldiers during combat conditions. Today, Chinese medical …

Specific Hypotheses In Linear Models And Their Power Function In Unbalanced Data, Seyed Mohtaba Taheri Jan 1977

Specific Hypotheses In Linear Models And Their Power Function In Unbalanced Data, Seyed Mohtaba Taheri

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A hypothesis is a statement or claim about the state of nature. Scientific investigators, market researchers, governmental decision makers, among others, will often have hypotheses about the particular facet of nature, hypotheses that need verification or rejection, for one purpose or another. Statisticians concerned with testing hypotheses using unbalanced data on the basis of linear models have talked about the difficulties involved for many years but, probably because the problems are not easily resolved, there is yet no satisfactory solution to these problems

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A Paiute-Tomahawk sounding rocket containing a 1.5- to 5.3-•m cryogenically cooled spectrometer was flown into a very bright (IBC III +) auroral breakup from Poker Flat, Alaska. The main emission features at 2.8, 4.3, and 5.3 um were all found to be enhanced owing to the larg•e energy input to the atmosphere associated with the aurora. The most prominent enhancement occurred in the 4.3-Urn feature which is identified as emission from the C02 (v•) band. The maximum of the peak spectral radiance of this feature was observed at a rocket altitude of 92 km and had a value of about …

Runoff Estimates For Small Rural Watersheds And Development Of A Sound Design Method. Volume Ii, Recommendations For Preparing Design Manuals And Appendices B, C, D, E, F, G, & H, Joel E. Fletcher, A. Leon Huber, Frank W. Haws, Calvin G. Clyde

Reports

Frequency analyses of more than 1,000 small watersheds in the United States and Puerto Rico were used to develop the estimation method for design of peak flow for ungaged watersheds. This method, called the Federal highway Administration (FHWA) method, is conceptually similar to the Bureau of Public Roads (BRP) method developed by W. D. Potter. The FHWA method relates the runoff peak to easily determined hydrophysiographic parameters and is intended for use on watersheds smaller than 50 square miles. The concept of risk is incorporated inot the design procedure. The risk is the probability that one or more events will …

Mixed Integer Programming Models For Water Resources Management, Brad A. Finney, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Trevor C. Hughes Jan 1977

Mixed Integer Programming Models For Water Resources Management, Brad A. Finney, William J. Grenney, A. Bruce Bishop, Trevor C. Hughes

Reports

A regional water quality control model is developed by linking a steady-state water quality simulation model with an optimization model. The water quality simulation model can be applied to complex river systems with both point and nonpoint loads using multiple interdependent pollution parameters described by either linear or nonlinear equations. Twelve water quality parameters can be modeled simultaneously: four non conservative constituents (or conservative constituents if the decay rate is set equal to zero); coliform bacteria (MPN); phosphorus; biochemical oxygen demand (BOD); ammonia (NH3); nitrate (NO3); dissolved oxygen (DO); temperature (°C); and algae. The water quality model is used to …

Rural Domestic Water System Peak Flows And Design Innovations, Optimal Water Planning Series, Trevor C. Hughes, Yukio Kono, Ronald Canfield Jan 1977

Rural Domestic Water System Peak Flows And Design Innovations, Optimal Water Planning Series, Trevor C. Hughes, Yukio Kono, Ronald Canfield

Reports

Planning engineers commonly use generous factors of safety for peak flow estimates in urban water supply systems both as a hedge against unforeseen growth and because economies of scale result in relatively low user costs even with such reserve capacity. Transplanting of such design criteria into the rural setting, however, simply does not work. The low density portions of rural domestic systems require very realistic design criteria or the construction costs become infeasible for the small number of customers involved. Peak instantaneous flow rates in a Utah rural system were measured continuously during two summers on three dead-end lines serving …

Evaluation Of Southern And Central Utah Cloud Seeding Program, Geoffrey E. Hill Jan 1977

Evaluation Of Southern And Central Utah Cloud Seeding Program, Geoffrey E. Hill

Reports

An evaluation of a winter operational-type cloud seeding project in Utah is made by developing meteorological predictors of target precipitation. Twenty-four hour precipitation amounts in seven unseeded years are matched with 12:00 GMT rawinsonde data to form predictor-predictand relationships. Application of the predictors to the first two years of the project indicates that the observed seeded precipitation is about what would be found in the absence of seeding.

A Study Of Feasibility Of State Water User Fees For Financing Water Development, Daniel H. Hoggan, O. W. Asplund, J. C. Anderson, D. G. Houston Jan 1977

A Study Of Feasibility Of State Water User Fees For Financing Water Development, Daniel H. Hoggan, O. W. Asplund, J. C. Anderson, D. G. Houston

Reports

Water user fees imposed by a state on major water uses is a possible new alternative source of state water development funds. A fee, similar to an excise tax, might be charged for the use of the water resource per se, which in a number of states is declared to be the property of the public of the state. States generally have not employed such fees as a source of operating funds for water agencies or of development capital. Only in the area of water based recreation-fishing, coating, camping, etc.—have states extensively employed user fees. The revenues from these fees, …

Reports

Intermittent sand filtration was evaluated as a means of upgrading the quality of aerated lagoon effluents to satisfy the requirements of PL 92-500. The aerated lagoon in question treats the wastes from a milk and cheese factory located in northern Utah. The treatment system consists of two diffused air aeration ponds followed by a facultative settling pond, were applied to pilot scale intermittent sand filters with 0.17 mm and 0.40 mm effective size sands. The filters were loaded hydraulically from 0.25 million gallons per acre per day to 1.0 million gallons per acre per day. It was found that sand …

Measurement Of The Nitric Oxide Altitude Distribution In The Mid-Latitude Mesosphere, K. D. Baker, A. F. Nagy, R. O. Olsen, E. S. Oran, J. Randhawa, D. F. Strobel, T. Tohmatsu Jan 1977

Measurement Of The Nitric Oxide Altitude Distribution In The Mid-Latitude Mesosphere, K. D. Baker, A. F. Nagy, R. O. Olsen, E. S. Oran, J. Randhawa, D. F. Strobel, T. Tohmatsu

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

A simple rocket-borne system has been developed for deriving nitric oxide concentration in the mesosphere from measurements of resonantly scattered solar ultraviolet radiation in the NOg ammbaa nd near 2150 •. The NO signal is extracted from a background of Rayleigh-scattered light by a direct measurement of this scattered light by use of an NO absorption cell. This system was utilized to measure the NO concentration above White Sands, New Mexico, in the altitude range from 69 to 101 km. The derived NO profile shows a concentration of about 3 x 10 7 cm-3 at 67 and 100 km with …

Evaluation Of An Experiment After Analysis Of Variance, Abdullah Sulaiman Atheem Jan 1977

Evaluation Of An Experiment After Analysis Of Variance, Abdullah Sulaiman Atheem

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

If experimental data are obtained according to an experimental design for which analysis of variance (AOV) is appropriate, the result of the analysis is one of the following decisions:

1. A significant difference exists among treatment effects.

2. No significant difference exists.

Interpretation in the first case has been studied very thoroughly by many statisticians resulting, for example, in the multiple comparison procedure. Too often, in the second case, the AOV analysis is thought to be completed with no further attempt to interpret a nonsignificant outcome.

Of the many possible explanations for significance in the first case, the multiple comparison …

Innovative Wind Machines, Executive Summary And Final Report, United States, Energy Research And Development Administration, Division Of Solar Energy

Fuel Sources

The work reported herein was supported by the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration through the National Science Foundation, and represents an initial evaluation of two innovative wind machines. The first is a vortex concentrator, which is a vertical wing placed in the natural wind in a way that a strong wing tip vortex occurs; a turbine is then placed behind the wing tip in the concentrated energy region of the vortex to convert the energy to more directly-useful forms. The second concept involves a vertical axis turbine with straight blades; the blades are composed of special circulation controlled airfoils …

A Study To Determine Why Forkner Shorthand Students Do Or Do Not Enroll In The Intermediate And Advanced Levels Of Shorthand At Utah State University, Mary Diskin May 1976

A Study To Determine Why Forkner Shorthand Students Do Or Do Not Enroll In The Intermediate And Advanced Levels Of Shorthand At Utah State University, Mary Diskin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Shorthand plays a very necessary part in preparing our office education students. There has been much discussion as to which type of writing system is more efficient. Some authorities in the field fee l that abbreviated longhand systems can be learned more easily than symbol systems.

According to Wagoner:

The usual advantages claimed for various abbreviated longhand systems are: the ease of converting from longhand to an abbreviated longhand system, a shorter learning period than a symbol system, and the ease of transcription. (1960, p. 21)

Since the Forkner system is based largely on what the learner already knows, the …

Some Implications Of Changing Natural Resource Use On Leadership Structure And As A Source Of Conflict In The Bear Lake Area Of Utah And Idaho, William C. Dunaway May 1976

Some Implications Of Changing Natural Resource Use On Leadership Structure And As A Source Of Conflict In The Bear Lake Area Of Utah And Idaho, William C. Dunaway

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Several problems have arisen in recent years as the Bear Lake area of Utah and Idaho has rapidly changed from an agricultural center to a recreation center. Some of these problems have included increased pollution of the lake, rising taxes, damages through fluctuations in the level of the lake and increased crime and traffic problems.

To test the assumptions and theoretical framework of this study, five hypotheses and three sub-hypotheses were formulated. Basically, these hypotheses stated that changing land and water uses; (1) disrupt the status quo of existing social systems and that incompatible values held by different vested interest …

Photosynthesis, Dark Respiration, And Growth Of Rumex Patientia L. Exposed To Uv-B (280-315 Nm) Irradiance Corresponding To Reduced Atmospheric Ozone Concentrations, William B. Sisson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Net photosynthesis, dark respiration, chlorophyll concentrations and growth were determined for Rumex patientia L. exposed to UV-B radiation corresponding to reduced atmospheric ozone concentrations. The hypothesis of whether reciprocity is maintained in the response of R. patientia to polychromatic UV-B radiation was tested. On the basis of the relationships derived from these studies, a simulation model was developed for the prediction of photosynthesis and growth of R. patientia exposed to UV-B radiation corresponding to any atmospheric ozone reduction.

Photosynthetic rates were found to be depressed after two hours exposure to UV-B irradiance simulating a 0.18 atm·cm ozone column when the …

Seasonal Patterns Of Photosynthesis And Respiration In Atriplex Confertifolia And Ceratoides Lanata, Richard S. White

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Net photosynthesis and dark respiration studies were conducted on Atriplex confertifolia (Torr. and Frem.) S. Wats and Ceratoides lanata (Pursh) J.T. Howell under field and laboratory conditions. These woody species are commonly found in salt desert shrub communities of the Intermountain West. During these investigations, the effects of air temperature, plant moisture stress, soil water potential, irradiation, and plant phenological status were examined with respect to their influence on carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange.

Intensive field studies were carried out between April and October. This interval corresponded to the major period of physiological activity in both species. The factors …

Quantitation Of Aliphatic Aldehydes In Rancid Turkey Meat Using A Substituted Hydrazone, Stanley J. Andrews May 1976

Quantitation Of Aliphatic Aldehydes In Rancid Turkey Meat Using A Substituted Hydrazone, Stanley J. Andrews

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many objective chemical tests have attempted to correlate with organoleptic evaluation of oxidative rancidity. Major chemical tests used to detect oxidative rancidity of lipids measure nonvolatile high molecular weight carbonylic substances which make no considerable contribution to rancid flavors. High molecular weight carbonyls are present at much greater concentrations than volatile low molecular weight carbonyls. Peroxides and other unknown substances also react in these chemical tests to give at best an empirical evaluation. A 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone chemical test is proposed which corrected some deficiencies of earlier procedures, and was correlated with organoleptic evaluation of rancid turkey samples. The proposed test …

Breeding Biology And Pesticide-Pcb Contamination Of Western Grebe At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Mark L. Lindvall May 1976

Breeding Biology And Pesticide-Pcb Contamination Of Western Grebe At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Mark L. Lindvall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The breeding biology of western grebe was studied at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah in 1973 and 1974. More than 300 nests were located and data gathered on nesting habitat and success. Western grebe at Bear River selected nest sites for nearness to open water of approximately 30 em in depth. At least one young was hatching in 21 percent of the nests. Avian predation and abandonment of nests following drops in water levels caused the greatest loss of nests. Chlorinated hydrocarbons monitored in western grebes showed DDE, DDD, PCB, 1260, and PCB 1254 levels in 24 breast muscle …

A Hydrology Temperature Model For A Small Mountain Watershed, Charles Wilson Pettee May 1976

A Hydrology Temperature Model For A Small Mountain Watershed, Charles Wilson Pettee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A small mountain watershed located in the Wasatch Mountains of North Central Utah is calibrated to a lumped, deterministic simulation model which is capable of predicting daily streamflow and stream temperature. The input information required is daily precipitation and maximum and minimum air temperatures.

In this study, the area of watershed modeling is reviewed in general and as it specifically applies to the study watershed.

The degree of correlation between observed data and predicted output is only mediocre. The model remains unverified for streamflow prediction and is poorly verified for stream temperature.
