Update On Estimation Of Water Surface Elevation Probabilities For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles, W. Robert James, Ronald V. Canfield
Update On Estimation Of Water Surface Elevation Probabilities For The Great Salt Lake, L. Douglas James, David S. Bowles, W. Robert James, Ronald V. Canfield
Reports
The techniques of operational hydrology, employing an autoregrssive moving average (ARMA (1,0) model were used to replicate historical patterns of streamflow into, precipitation on, and evaporation from the Great Salt Lake. The results were combined with a lake water balance model to simulate lake stage sequences beginning with known initial conditions and extending up to 125 years into the future and used to generate probability distributions for future lake stages. Starting with a spring 1980 high stage of 4200.45 ft msl, the best estimate is that the 1981 spring high will be 4200.19, but there is one change in four …
The Kinetics Of Rotating Biological Contactors Treating Domestic Wastewater, Abraham Pano, E. Joe Middlebrooks, J. H. Reynolds
The Kinetics Of Rotating Biological Contactors Treating Domestic Wastewater, Abraham Pano, E. Joe Middlebrooks, J. H. Reynolds
Reports
Four, four-stage, laboratory scale rotating biological contactor (RBC) units were employed to develop kinetic models for the RBC process when treating domestic wastewater. The study was conducted at three different temperatures of 5 degrees C, 15 degrees C, and 20 degrees C. Each unit operated at a different constant organic loading rate taht ranged from 4 qCOD/m^2/d to 14 gCOD/m^2/d and at a constand detention time of 2 hours. Carbonaceous substrate removals measured as COD cencentrations with the four-stage RBC's were 80, 85, and 90 percent for 5 degrees C, 15 degrees C, and 20 degrees C, respectively. The major …

Fielding Ditch Pipeline Computer Simulation Study, Calvin G. Clyde, J. Paul Tullis, Roland W. Jeppson
Reports
The Fielding Ditch Company Pipeline is almost 3 miles long and supplies irrigation water under low pressure to adjacent fields through 33 turnouts along its length. The 24-inch non-reinforced concrete pipeline began to experience repeated structural failures soon after it was placed in operation. This study was done for the Soil Conservation Service by the Utah Water Research Laboratory to gather field data on the pipeline operating characteristics, to analyze the hydraulic transients in the pipeline with the help of a computer simulation model, and to suggest modification to protect the pipeline from future failures caused by transient pressures. Following …
Longitudinal And Seasonal Changes In Functional Organization Of Macroinvertebrate Communities In Four Oregon Streams., Charles P. Hawkins, J. R. Sedell
Longitudinal And Seasonal Changes In Functional Organization Of Macroinvertebrate Communities In Four Oregon Streams., Charles P. Hawkins, J. R. Sedell
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Relative numerical dominance and densities of invertebrate functional feeding groups are compared with longitudinal and seasonal changes in food resources in a Cascade Range stream system in Oregon. We also compare our data with hypothetical predictions of the River Continuum model. We found that both relative abundances and densities of functional groups fit qualitative characterization of stream reaches and the River Continuum model: Shredders dominated upper shaded reaches; scrapers were most important in intermediate—sized sections; collectors increased in importance progressively downstream; predators were nearly constant in relative abundance at all sections; other functional groups were either rare or only locally …
Utilization Of Aspen Populus-Tremuloides Trees As A Ruminant Feed Component, M. Singh, L.D. Kamstra
Utilization Of Aspen Populus-Tremuloides Trees As A Ruminant Feed Component, M. Singh, L.D. Kamstra
Aspen Bibliography
When traditional roughages are in short supply or high in price, other fibrous feed sources for ruminants should be considered if available at a competitive price. One such fibrous material shown to have potential as a ruminant feed is the aspen tree (Populus tremuloides Michx.) harvested in its entire form to include bark, leaves and trunk. The aspen tree is the most widespread tree species in North America and the least utilized. Estimates exceed 6 million acres of mature trees in an area which would include the Black Hills (58,000 acres), the Great Lakes region and the Rocky …
Model Choice: An Operational Comparison Of Stochastic Streamflow Models For Droughts, W. Robert James, David S. Bowles, Nath T. Kottegoda
Model Choice: An Operational Comparison Of Stochastic Streamflow Models For Droughts, W. Robert James, David S. Bowles, Nath T. Kottegoda
Reports
The rapid development of stochastic or operational hydrology over the past 10 years has led to the need for some comparative analyses of the currently available long-term persistence models. Five annual stochastic streamflow generation models (autoregressive, autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA), ARMA-Markov, fast fractional Gaussian noise, and broken line) are compared on their ability to preserve drought-related time series properties and annual statistics. Using Monte Carlo generation procedures and comparing the average generated statistics and drought or water supply properties, a basis is established to evalute model performance on four different Utah study streams. A seasonal disaggregation model is applied to each of …
Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Calcium Carbonate Precipitation As Influenced By Stream Primary Production, Gretchen L. Rupp, V. Dean Adams
Reports
The potential influence of periphyton photosynthesis on calcium carbonate precipitation was studied for the Logan River, Bear River Mountains, northern Utah. The water chemistry, hydrology, and benthic primary production of the river were monitored for one year. periphyton photosynthesis and calcium carbonate precipitation were measured concurrently in laboratory experiments utilizing radioisotopic tracers. These experiments investigated the effects of water temperature, velocity, and macronutrient concentration on photosynthetically induced calcium carbonate precipitation. In these experiments, the biologic induction of calcium carbonate precipitation was not correlated with water nutrient level. It did, however, reflect water temperature, and was greatest at approximately 10 degrees …
Natural Salinity Removal Processes In Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Eugene K. Israelsen, V. Dean Adams
Natural Salinity Removal Processes In Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Eugene K. Israelsen, V. Dean Adams
Reports
A small but significant amount of salinity removal has been reported by various authors to occur in mainstem Colorado River reservoirs. Recalculation of some of these salinity budgets, together with a review of the data bases used, usggests taht removal has not often been conclusively demonstrated. Laboratory microcosm experiments and field data indicate that calcium carbonate precipitation, perhaps with some coprecipitation of magnesium carbonate, is the mechanism responsible for most of the salinity removal in Oneida Reservoir, Idaho. Coprecipitation processes (including ion exchange), coagulation, and bioassimilation do not appear to be important natural salinity removal mechanisms. Finally, loss of calcium, …

Iron And Life, Thomas Emery
Iron And Life, Thomas Emery
Faculty Honor Lectures
Iron, iron, everywhere but. . . . The plight of the ancient mariner surrounded by undrinkable water could hardly have been more frustrating than life on earth with respect to iron. Iron is the fourth most abundant element of the earth's surface, exceeded only by oxygen, silicon, and aluminum. Virtually all forms of life from the simplest bacteria to humans require iron to catalyze numerous and complex metabolic reactions. Because of the diversity and complexity of the role of iron in the life process, it has even been suggested that the origin of life on earth centered around the catalytic …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Food size selection of the mosquitofish , Gambusia affinis affinis. was measured in aquaria using juvenile stages of the mosquito, Clllex tarsalb;, as prey. Fish size varied from recently born fry to large adult females. Food size selection was positively correlated with fish size. Mosquitofish fry (6-8 111m standard length) attacked and ate primarily first and second instar larvae. Fry attacked larger instars, but attack success on these was low (0 - 50%). Fish larger than 20 mm attached primarily pupae and third and fourth instar larva. No first instar mosquitoes were eaten. Attack success for these fish was above …

Molecular weights were also determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Polypeptide 15A was estimated to have a molecular weight of 8,250 ± 10% daltons from 12% acrylamide gels and 9,350 ± 10% daltons from 15% acrylamide gels. Polypeptide 15B was estimated …
Chlorophyll Fluorescence Probe Of Ultraviolet-B Photoinhibition Of Primary Photoreactions In Intact Leaves, Robert S. Nowak
Chlorophyll Fluorescence Probe Of Ultraviolet-B Photoinhibition Of Primary Photoreactions In Intact Leaves, Robert S. Nowak
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Damage to primary photosynthetic reactions caused by environmental stress can be assessed by measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence induction in intact leaves. This approach was applied in studies of ultraviolet-B photoinhibition of photosynthesis in Pisum sativum L. and Rumex patientia L. leaves. At ultraviolet-B dose rates insufficient to cause inhibition of net photosynthesis, changes in the magnitude of fluorescence transients did occur, which suggested direct effects on chloroplast pigments in Pisum and inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport between the photosystems in both species. Leaves of these two species subjected to a much higher dose rate had a significant reduction of net …

A Confidence Interval Estimate Of Percentile, How Coung Jou
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The confidence interval estimate of percentile and its applications were studied. The three methods of estimating a confidence interval were introduced. Some properties of order statistics were reviewed. The Monte Carlo Method -- used to estimate the confidence interval was the most important one among the three methods. The generation of ordered random variables and the estimation of parameters were discussed clearly. The comparison of the three methods showed that the Monte Carlo method would always work, but the K-S and the simplified methods would not.

An Analysis Of Heinrich Heine's Dramatic Works: "Almansor" And "William Ratcliff", Marianne Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The mass of words written about the German poet and prose writer Heinrich Heine (1?97-1856) is intimidating. He is considered to be one of the most controversial and paradoxical authors of the Western literature, an enigmatic figure among German writers, and the only German writer between Goethe and Thomas Mann to achieve during his lifetime a reputation beyond the bounds of German-speaking countries. He has been termed "the pioneer of radical political literature, an eccentric poet." His works became a milestone of German thought.

Determining Initial Values For Stiff Systems With Incomplete Initial Data, Yech-Kuang Ning
Determining Initial Values For Stiff Systems With Incomplete Initial Data, Yech-Kuang Ning
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Stiff differential equations frequently arise in physical problems due to the existence of greatly differing time constants. One way of solving stiff differential equations is taking the step size very small, another way is using an A-stable or stiffly stable implicit method. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the method of determining initial values for stiff systems. The algorithm was motivated by a problem from ionospheric physics in which some of the initial values are unknown. If we give those unknown initial values an arbitrary number and integrated with those values, we have an initial transient. However, if …
