Teaching Critical Thinking Through Student Self Analysis Of Video Taped Seminar Discussions, James M. Miller
Teaching Critical Thinking Through Student Self Analysis Of Video Taped Seminar Discussions, James M. Miller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The main objective of the Cedar High School (C.H.S.) study was to develop a curriculum that would be useful to the social studies educator interested in teaching critical thinking skills to high school students. The model for teaching critical thinking that was followed during the C.H.S. study included three requirements. The first was to identify those critical thinking skills that would be useful to students during discussion of controversial issues. The second requirement of the critical thinking model was to teach these context specific critical thinking skills to students. This requirement was met by using a variety of materials, including …
Identity: A Study Of Existential Vs. Social Anchorage, Paul J. Seymour
Identity: A Study Of Existential Vs. Social Anchorage, Paul J. Seymour
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to assess the identity anchorage of persons in different societal positions.
Four experimental groups were chosen to represent different societal positions, namely, students, musicians, management personnel, and nonmanagement personnel. There were 93 subjects involved in these four groups. Each subject was presented with an adapted version of the Twenty Statements Test and a questionnaire to obtain biographical data. The statements made on the Twenty Statements Test were then placed into one of the following categories: physical characteristics; social roles and institutions; characteristic ways of acting, feeling or responding in social interaction; and, broad nondifferentiating …

A Comparison Of Two Methods Of Teaching A Remedial Mathematics Course At The Community College, James C. Olsen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Problem
This study was concerned with the effectiveness of two different programs for teaching remedial mathematics to community college students. An individualized instruction program, making use of independent study and the small group setting, was compared with the traditional lecture-textbook instruction program to determine if there existed significant differences in (a) the rate of attrition, and (b) mathematics performance. A secondary objective was to determine if significant differences existed between students enrolled in remedial mathematics classes at 9 AM and those enrolled at 12 Noon.
Method
The target population consisted of all students in fourteen community colleges in the Los …
The Validity Of Awarding Credit By Examination In English Composition, Mark Guymon Christensen
The Validity Of Awarding Credit By Examination In English Composition, Mark Guymon Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study investigated the validity of excusing students from composition courses based upon an objective examination.
Utah State University (USU) students who had taken freshman composition courses during the 1970-71 school year when these courses were required of all entering freshman students were divided into two groups: one group was composed of those who had received an "A" or "B" for three freshman composition courses, while the other group had received a- "C" or "D" for the same courses. USU students who had been excused from taking freshman composition courses based on the CLEP General Examination in English Composition (CLEP) …
An Experiment Comparing The Relative Effectiveness Of A Linear And A Context Program In Teaching Some Selected Persian Words With Reference To The Persian Alphabet To English Speaking People, Batool Moghadam
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to test the relative effectiveness of a linear and a context program in teaching some selected Persian words to English speaking people.
A survey of the literature did not reveal studies closely related to the present study, but it revealed studies verifying the usefulness of programed instruction in general, and also some limited attempts made to set up programs for teaching Persian to Americans. There has been increasing attention by educators to programed instruction in the last fifteen years. The idea was also supported that there is a need in the United States for …

A Trail Guide To The Dominguez – Velez De Escalante Expedition 1776, Robert S. Russon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In 1939, Herbert E. Bolton stated a need for a synthesizing map of the Dominguez - Velez de Escalante route through the four states of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. Dr. Bolton urged that a joint effort be undertaken between state and government agencies to establish an "Escalante Way" through the four states to commemorate the historic trek.
The "Trail Guide to the Dominguez - Velez de Escalante Expedition 1776" is an answer to the Challenge given by Herbert Bolton. It is essentially a set of maps, accurately drawn, simplified for lay read ing and enlivened by supporting text. …
Modification Of Ontogenic Expression Due To Relocation Of The Ry+ Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allen A. Badgett Jr.
Modification Of Ontogenic Expression Due To Relocation Of The Ry+ Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allen A. Badgett Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The ry+ gene of Drosophila melanogaster and its associated enzyme, xanthine dehydrogenase, were employed in an analysis of the relationship between regulation and the location of a gene in the genome. Enzyme assays as an indication of gene activity were performed on genotypes containing zero, one and two doses of ry+ genes. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity of rosy genes in normal and relocated positions was determined during development.
The results indicate: 1) the gene ry+ is differentially active during ontogeny; 2) the activity during ontogeny is proportional to the number of ry+ genes present in the genome; …
Effect Of Various Nitrogen Sources On The Metabolism Of Miserotoxin In Astragalus Miser Dougl. Ex Hook., Robert Parker
Effect Of Various Nitrogen Sources On The Metabolism Of Miserotoxin In Astragalus Miser Dougl. Ex Hook., Robert Parker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wasatch milkvetch [Astragalus miser Dougl., var. oblongifolius (Rydb.) Cronq.] was highest in miserotoxin, a poisonous nitro compound, when potassium nitrate was used as the nitrogen source in nutrient cultures. Ammonium nitrate, added to Hoagland solutions to provide four and one-half times normal nitrogen, lowered percent miserotoxin in the plants. Plants grew abnormally in the greenhouse, producing little growth and becoming periodically senescent. High greenhouse temperatures, up to 45 C, were probably responsible for the abnormal growth.
Attempts to inoculate and fix nitrogen in Wasatch milkvetch with Rhizobium bacteria were unsuccessful in the greenhouse.
In growth chamber studies, percent miserotoxin …
Vector Preference Among Varieties Of Lycopersicon Peruvianum And L. Esculentum As Related To Curly Top Virus Resistance, Stanford A. Young
Vector Preference Among Varieties Of Lycopersicon Peruvianum And L. Esculentum As Related To Curly Top Virus Resistance, Stanford A. Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Tests substantiating vector nonpreference as a factor in the ability of certain tomato varieties to escape curly top virus (CTV) infection were conducted and evaluated. Nonpreference is not an effective mode of resistance to CTV in tomatoes under field conditions since leafhoppers feed on and may infect plants before expressing a preference.
Preference of viruliferous leafhoppers was observed on plants of seven tomato varieties arranged both randomly and homogeneously in caged flats. Through observation of curly top symptom development, relative resistance due to vector nonpreference was calculated for each variety.
Up to 23 per cent of the fairly high resistance …

An Approach To Range Inventory For The Annual Range Type Of The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Range inventory, by definition, is the evaluation of the range resources to determine a proper and safe level of stocking and to provide a record of vegetation and vegetation changes (Stoddart and Smith, 1955). Range survey is defined by the Range Conservation Glossary, Soil Conservation Service (1944) as "a systematic and comprehensive inventory and analysis of the range resources and related management problems of a range area for the purpose of developing plans of management therefrom." Accordingly, range inventory is the quest for basic information about rangelands and the development of guides and procedures for their management, improvement and efficient …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
There is little research pertaining to teacher aide programs in rural school districts on a national level. The writer is not aware of any studies conducted in Utah which have analyzed how teacher aides are selected, trained, and utilized in a rural school district. Yet, we must find ways to conserve the professional talent of teachers and to put it to more effective use and the use of teacher aides is one way we have attempted to do this.
Procedure For Identifying Emotionally Disturbed Freshmen At Utah State University: A Study And Recommendation, Carl D. Allen
Procedure For Identifying Emotionally Disturbed Freshmen At Utah State University: A Study And Recommendation, Carl D. Allen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The encouragement of individual self-improvement and enlightenment through the process of a formal education is basic to the social system of our nation. College and university administrators are therefore faced with a practical exigency for understanding those factors that are associated with academic achievement. (During the past several years there has been increasing evidence that college achievement is dependent upon something more than intellectual ability. From experience, the average counselor in a college or university has become aware of this fact time and time again. Some studies have gone further and suggested specific personality characteristics of successful and unsuccessful students. …
The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson
The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The changing concept of the uses of the typewriter has had an enormous effect on the teaching of typewriting. In addition to the vocational objective, the personal-use objective has been added. Personal-use typewriting has as its goal the material that the student is likely to typewrite for himself; vocational typewriting is focused on what others want typed for them. The distinguishing characteristic in teaching the two is therefore not the skill accomplishment so much as the kind of material involved (13).
A study released by Hosler and Maske (4) seems to substantiate the reasoning that students in a personal-use typing …
Recital Report, Fae Patterson
Recital Report, Fae Patterson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Performance is vital to a musician and educator because through understanding and analysis of problems the teacher can better help his students. The specific problems for this performer and for this recital were: (1) The interpretation of the music according to the style intended by the composer, and (2) The mastery of the technic needed to overcome difficult passages.
The purpose of the musician was to prepare a recital which would demonstrate tone quality, control, phrasing, musicianship, and confidence in performance. The basic assumption was that the teacher-musician needs to demonstrate these qualities to enable him to more effectively work …

The Supreme Organ Of The Mind's Self-Ordering Growth, T. Y. Booth
Faculty Honor Lectures
As is true of other organs, when language is functioning well, we pay little or no attention to it or its complexities. Part of the difficulty, in fact, of doing justice to the problems of expression and interpretation that Richards asks us to deal with is that routine language experience occurs so effortlessly, so unconcernedly, so second-natured naturally, that when we do run into difficulties we do not always recognize them as difficulties of our developing language. Or, what can be even worse, we think of the language difficulties as if they were separable, as if the thought would be …

Termination of U.S. government support for the Supersonic Transport, SST, may eventually cost the United States its leadership in aviation and billions of dollars in international trade losses, yet if the world wide SST program is allowed to continue, the costs to mankind as a result of damage to environmental resources could be much higher. The decision to terminate the project was heavily based upon concern for possible changes in the properties of the upper atmosphere as a result of SST operations in that realm, with consequent danger to plant and animal life on the Earth below. Briefly, the concern …

A model for the diffusion of implanted interstitials during implantation is introduced and shown to be able to account for the tails observed in ion profiles. It is argued that mechanisms of ionization‐enhanced diffusion can explain some of the anomalous diffusion mechanisms observed in semiconductors. Indications for the existence of such mechanisms in the field of ion implantation in semiconductors are discussed.

The Evaluation Of Glasser's Maximum Likelihood Method On Missing Data In Regression, Gayle M. Yamasaki
The Evaluation Of Glasser's Maximum Likelihood Method On Missing Data In Regression, Gayle M. Yamasaki
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Missing data in regression is often a problem to research workers because standard regression methods are applicable only to complete data sets. At present there are three general methods for solving the problem of missing data.
At first, the reduced data method, reduces the incomplete data set to a complete data set before analyzing. Although this method is very simple to apply, substantial amounts of information are sometimes lost when data is eliminated. This results in less precise estimates of the regression parameters.
The second method, generalized least squares, estimates the missing values through least squares techniques, thus obtaining a …
