Defining Efficient Water Resource Management In The Weber Drainage Basin, Utah, Keith D. Wilde
Defining Efficient Water Resource Management In The Weber Drainage Basin, Utah, Keith D. Wilde
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Weber Basin Water Conservancy District is a state institution, but its primary function is collecting money for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, to pay for the Weber Basin Project. Different classes of water users pay markedly different fees for identical Project services. More than half of the water developed by the Project is not used consumptively, yet supply facilities continue to be built in the Basin because they are less expensive to their owners than prices charged for the underused capacity of the Project. Paradoxically, some Basin residents are bitterly resentful of both the District and the Bureau, claiming …

Electrification Of Utah 1880 To 1915, Boyd L. Dastrup
Electrification Of Utah 1880 To 1915, Boyd L. Dastrup
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Invented in the 1870's, practical electric lighting systems and the electric power industry immediately began to spread. At first electricity was limited to public and domestic lighting. Soon, it was applied to transportation when streetcars and interurbans were electrified. Later, industry, in particular the mining industry, adopted electricity as a source of power, and the profits and efficiency increased significantly.
In Utah electrification began as early as 1880. In that year the state's first electric power company was incorporated in Salt Lake City. Soon, Ogden, Logan, Provo, and other towns began harnessing electricity. Shortly thereafter, electric streetcars began to run …

Eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of M. pacifica were subjected to regimens …
The Supply Of National Park Products: A Theoretical And Applied Analysis, Judith Carol Houston
The Supply Of National Park Products: A Theoretical And Applied Analysis, Judith Carol Houston
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The central objective of the investigation in this study is to determine a means of attaining an economically efficient combination of resources to maximize the level of services provided by a national park under the conditions of a limited budget, a constrained production possibilities set, and a limited availability of inputs. First, a theoretical model is built which elucidates the collective and private good natures of national park products. The theory identifies the optimality criteria for the provision of park products in a system of limited resources. It is noted, however, that the theoretically determined optimal solution cannot be expected …

The city of Tientsin is situated in northern China at the junction of the Peiho (River) and the Yuho (the Grand Canal). Its latitude is approximately 39 degrees north with a longitude of about 117 degrees east. The unique thing about Tientsin in 1900 was that it was actually two totally separate cities. Tientsin City , or the Native City, was surrounded by a large wall built in 1405. The wall was about thirty feet thick and about twenty-five feet high. The sides of it were faced with brick work four to five feet thick and the center was filled …

The Sims Technique: An Introduction, Roy W. Esplin
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
This is a tutorial paper on the SIMS. The SIMS is an acronym for the spectrométre inter - férentiel à modulation sélective (selective modulation interference spectrometer), recently introduced by Maréchal and Fortunato. The paper reviews the basic principles of operation, the properties, the implementation configurations, and the current investigations of the SIMS at Utah State University. The following properties make the SIMS a powerful spectroscopic instrument. It has an extremely large optical throughput. For example, the SIMS can be configured with a light gathering capability, throughput, thousands of times larger than that of a conventional slit spectrometer. The SIMS does …
English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart
English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The art of translation lies in a literary limbo, subservient to the creativity and expressions of others. Yet in attempting to bridge two different languages and cultures, it entails unique problems as difficult as those encountered in any other literary activity.
The following is the report of a project carried out with the Translation Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the fall of 1975 as a senior Honors project in fulfillment of requirements for graduation from the Honors Program at U.S.U. Since this internship itself formed the bulk of my project, the following is presented …
Recent Reforms In Campaign Finance Regulations And Their Potential Effect On Federal Elections And Reflections On Washington As A Congressional Intern, Randy D. Funk
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the spring of 1975, upon learning that I had been selected as a summer intern in Congressman Gunn McKay's office, I thought that such an experience might readily serve as the basis for my senior Honors project. I discussed this possibility with Dr. Douglas Alder, the Honors Program Director, and Dr. Wendell Anderson, the intern advisor. With their approval, I decided to write one paper on my impressions of Washington as an intern and then upon my return to school, research and write another paper on an issue related to Congress. This is the reason my thesis project is …

Colorado River Basin Modeling Studies: Proceedings Of A Seminar Held At Utah State University Logan , Utah July 16-18, 1975, Calvin G. Clyde, Donna H. Falkenborg, J. Paul Riley
Reports
Preface: Computer modeling is an important and valuable tool for water resources planning and management. In recent years many different modeling approaches and techniques have been developed. Some have been applied in the Colorado River Basin. A brief and incomplete search showed over fifty reports on modeling in the Colorado River Basin alone. The main motivation for this Seminar was the indication that (1) much duplication of effort is occuring among Colorado River modeling studies due to lack of information and (2) much of the knowledge now available on modeling is not being effectively applied to real problems. The overall …

Effect Of Salinity On Glycogen Content In The Brine Shrimp, Artemia Salinas, Of Great Salt Lake, Christon H. Merkley
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The brine shrimp, Artemia salinas, is one of the few organisms to be found in the hostile environment of the Great Salt Lake. Salt concentrations in the lake are found to exceed those in the oceans. In such an environment, the utilization of energy, even after it has been procured, presents a problem. The life inhabiting the lake has developed extraordinary adaptations to this and similar problems.
Electron micrographs produced by Dr. Nabil Youssef of Utah State University have revealed that unusual quantities of glycogen can be found in the muscle of brine shrimp taken from the Great Salt Lake. …

Some Aspects Of Winter Social Behavior In Dark-Eyed Juncos, Martha Hatch Balph
Biology
The purpose of this study was to examine some aspects of winter social behavior in Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) in an effort to understand the accommodation which members of a flock must make between the need to compete for limited resources and the need to mediate resultant aggression. The specific objectives of the investigation were: (1) to analyze the form and function of visual and auditory signals used by juncos in a social context; and (2) to determine quantitatively the relationship between agonistic behavior and each of several factors including season, time of day, sex, rank, degree of …
The Effects Of Sorbitol (D-Glucitol) On The Induction Of Mutations In Drosophila Melanogaster, David M. Abbott
The Effects Of Sorbitol (D-Glucitol) On The Induction Of Mutations In Drosophila Melanogaster, David M. Abbott
Biology
Sorbitol (D-Glucitol) is used as a food additive and artifical sweetener. The chemical is known to have several pathological effects, among which are macroangiopathy, neuropathy, and cataracts. These are especially prevalent in diabetics. It was the objective of this investigation to critically examine the genetic effects of sorbitol in Drosophila melanogaster. After determining that sorbitol is not lethal, the imbibing behavior of the flies was tested and tests for the induction of somatic mutations, sex-linked recessive lethals, and chromosome loss were performed. In each case, the experiments were paralleled by appropriate positive and negative controls. In analyzing the data, …
