As mass merchandising has become an important part of our American way of life and as competition has increased, marketers have recognized the need for a positive public image. Many retail store managers are now evaluating all inside selling activities to determine locations within the store that contribute to improved customer relations. The checkout station is considered one of the best areas for effective customer relations since the checker-cashier is of~en the only employee the customer contacts while shopping and since all customers must leave through the checkout area in many stores. Retail store managers recognize the need f or …

Curriculum Materials Center: Perceptions Of The Faculty Of The College Of Education At Utah State University, Janie L. Rudrud
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Curriculum Materials Centers, traced as far back as the 1920's, have existed under a variety of names and with a variety of functions. The concept of a curriculum laboratory (one of the many commonly used terms) varies from that of a place or room with equipment and materials to that of a service in which leadership in the use of these materials is also provided. Church feels that they have survived because of this very ability to vary their functions to serve their particular parent institution; remaining adaptable to disseminate the curriculum and instructional materials needed in the form desired …
Effects Of Low-Level Chronic Radiation On Plant Nuclear Parameters As Related To Successional Patterns, Eric A. Rechel
Effects Of Low-Level Chronic Radiation On Plant Nuclear Parameters As Related To Successional Patterns, Eric A. Rechel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A major issue facing nuclear power stations is how to effectively deal with radioactive waste. This waste, as it comes from a reactor, is emitting large quantities of ionizing radiation which is usually confined. Another form of radioactive wastes is the mill tailings from uranium processing plants. These tailings are sites characterized by low-level chronic radiation.
The mill tailings of the Vitro Chemical Plant, in Salt Lake City, Utah, have been a point of radionuclide concentration and environmental contamination for 20 years. These tailings may adversely affect both surrounding ecosystems and any biological systems seeking to become established on the …

A Study Of Rest Period, Hardiness, And Bud Development Of The 'Concord' Grape, Mervin Gayle Weeks
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The length of the 'Concord' grape rest period was evaluated during 1974-75 and 1975-76. Cuttings were placed in a 25 C growth chamber every two weeks from October through April. Number of days to reach 50 percent full bud swell was plotted to determine rest completion. Seven years of weather data and full bloom dates of 'Concord' grapes from Prosser, Washington were statistically analyzed to give another estimate of rest completion. Rest was terminated after about 830 chill units.
During 1974-75 and 1975-76, T50 temperatures were determined every two weeks for both cambium and primary buds of 'Concord' grapes. …

Multiple Forms Of Deoxyribonucleic Acid-Dependent Ribonucleic Acid Polymerase In Barley Leaves (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Sachchidananda Javali
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ribonucleic acid polymerases (E.C. 2.7.7.6) have been solubilized form whole green leaves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Three major forms of the solubilized enzyme have been isolated by sonication in high ionic strength buffers, cation and anion exchange chromatography, and agarose gel permeation chromatography and designated I, II, and III. The enzyme fractions appear analogous to the Class I, II, and III ribonucleic acid polymerases defined in other eucaryotic systems. The ionic strength optima, amatoxin sensitivity, and relative activities with denatured calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid were different for Class I, II, and III polymerases.

Anglo-American Relations During The Civil War: The Trent Affair, Marvin Bryan Moorhead
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In the fall of 1861 the Confederacy decided to send a second diplomatic mission to Europe: James Mason to London and John Slidell to Paris. Mason and Slidell slipped through the Union blockade and booked passage from Havana to London on the Trent, a British mail packet. On November 8, 1861 Charles Wilkes, captain of the Union warship San Jacinto, stopped the Trent in the Bahama Channel. Instead of escorting the vessel to a Union prize court, which could legally judge who or what on board the British vessel constituted contraband, he seized the two emissaries and let the Trent …

Patterns Of Management Thought: The Search For New Perspectives, Howard M. Carlisle
Faculty Honor Lectures
the past several years, I have noticed that the presenters have typically done two things: they have reviewed some of their most significant research or theoretical contributions, and they have engaged in some freewheeling speculations or prescriptions about future trends. I intend to do both of these tonight. I would like to report on several aspects of contingency or situational theories of management where I have done most of my publishing, and I would also like to express some personal concerns and prescriptions I propose to improve the effectiveness of organizations
Soil Inorganic Nitrogen As An Environmental Trigger For Weed Seed Germination, David Jeffrey Schimpf
Soil Inorganic Nitrogen As An Environmental Trigger For Weed Seed Germination, David Jeffrey Schimpf
Biology
A model of adaptive germination was tested by observing germination responses of six annual weed species with respect to soil nitrate levels. Setaria lutescens (Weigel) Hubbard, Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv., and Amaranthus retroflexus L. were selected as species for which it would be adaptive to increase germination percentages when soil nitrate was high. Avena fatua L., Brassica nigra (L.) Koch, and Medicago lupulina L. were selected as species for which it woμld be adaptive to decrease germination percentages when soil nitrate was high. A controlled environment was used for the experiments, except for one field experiment with M. lupulina. Emphasis …

Adaptive Aspects Of The Vocal Repertoire Of The Willet, Tex A. Sordahl
Biology
Free-living Willets, Catoptrophorus semipalmatus inornatus, were studied during the breeding seasons of 1974 and 1975 in Cache County, Utah. Upon arrival in early April the birds congregated at communal courtship-feeding ponds for 2-3 weeks. They subsequently dispersed to surrounding fields where nesting territories were maintained. The birds began forming flocks in mid-June and all birds had departed by mid-August. A spectrographic analysis is presented for the 10 adult and one chick vocalizations recognized in this study, and a numerical and a biological description is given for each call. The Pill-will-willet flight-song and the accompanying song-flight are discussed in detail. A …
The Carotenoids Of Leptinotarsa Beetles: Their Identification And Significance To Systematics And Evolution, James Meredith Poff
The Carotenoids Of Leptinotarsa Beetles: Their Identification And Significance To Systematics And Evolution, James Meredith Poff
Biology
The purpose of this study was to examine the carotenoids of species within the genus Leptinotarsa and their host plants, with the anticipation that a knowledge of the pigments and their distribution would aid in understanding the evolutionary relationships within the genus. Three age classes of insects (early fourth instar larvae, pupae, and adults) were used. Samples were extracted with acetone and methanol. Following purification, the carotenes and xanthophylls were separated by solvent partitioning and the carotenoids in each fraction were examined by column and thin layer chromatography and by absorption spectrophotometry. The presence of carotenoids was confirmed for five …

Spanish Policy Concerning The Apaches In The Eighteenth Century With Emphasis On The Policy Of Bernardo De Galvez, Michael Guy Bishop
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In 1785, two men came into important government positions in New Spain who had considerable influence on the Indian policies of the Spanish frontier. These men were Bernardo de Galvez and Jacobo Ugarte y Loyola. Both had proven their competence through earlier services to the crown. Galvez had come to the new world while still a relatively young man in 1769. Due to his own accomplishments, and the watchful eye of his uncle, Jose de Galvez, Bernardo advanced rapidly. He first served on the Louisi.ana frontier as a military officer, and in time rose to become governor of that province. …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In the highly competitive cattle market of today a scientific method, by which a rancher can base a judgement, moderated by experience as to which animals are to be kept, as proven by superior performance, can be a valuable asset.
This record performance testing system was designed to demonstrate the value of adequately kept records. Its purpose is to help ranchers develop records of herd performance, inventory, and improve management practices by more informed decisions. The system, through its representative, provides a means by which ranchers can obtain information on new ideas in animal production, health, sanitation, nutrition, management practices, …

Does The "Draw-A-Male-And-A-Female" Test Show Male-Female Relationship?, Paul Charles Hatch
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The present study investigated the "Draw-A-Male-And-A-Female" test to find if this variation of the "Draw-A-Person" test was a valid measure of male-female relationship variables, i.e., compatibility, happiness, warmth, and interpersonal anxiety and conflict. Two groups varying with respect to relationship (married group vs divorced group) were tested. A high school group was also tested. Three psychologists rated the drawings into a positive or a negative relationship group. If the male and female figures in the drawing had the appearance of warmth or pleasantness between each other, seemed compatible, and looked free from interpersonal anxiety or conflict, the picture was placed …
