Navigating Regulatory And Ethical Hurdles With Hexsat: A Detachable Net Casting Spider-Inspired Space Debris Removal Concept, Leonor Merino Osornio, Mostafa Hassanalian
Small Satellite Conference
As the amount of space debris in orbit continues to increase, the need for methods of mitigating space debris becomes urgent. Drawing inspiration from nature, a net casting spider-inspired method of space debris removal has been proposed. This method, embodied in the HexSat design, features six separate wedges that can deploy to form a net for capturing debris. Once the target debris is captured, HexSat will intentionally reenter the atmosphere, where it will burn up. Any missions aimed at cleaning up space debris will face numerous challenges posed by international space regulations. To assess these challenges, a hypothetical scenario was …

Satellite ground station link failures are disruptive to space operations and are to be avoided. Critically, it may not be obvious if a link failure is caused by the spacecraft, or by the ground station, especially during LEOP. We present a scheduler to automate periodic calibration passes on known spacecraft and conduct Y-Factor G/T measurements when the ground station would otherwise be idle. Automatically scheduling, logging and comparing pass metrics against nominal values alerts us to any system performance deterioration. Such automated testing has been successfully used to identify antenna faults and temporary obstructions. We also discuss the usefulness of …

Autonomy - the ability of system to retask itself in response to unexpected/unmodeled events - is an enabling technology for space missions. However, autonomy carries risk: what if the system makes unexpected or dangerous decisions? How can human operators trust that the system will not exceed certain bounds of behavior? Are we sure that an autonomous vehicle will outperform a human-directed system?
To address these questions, the Space Systems Research Laboratory (SSRL) of Saint Louis University is developing the Distributed Observation Reasoning and Reaction Experiment (DORRE). DORRE consists of 8 spacecraft operating together in low-Earth orbit to conduct a series …

Modelling Climate Effects On Site Productivity And Developing Site Index Conversion Equations For Jack Pine And Trembling Aspen Mixed Stands, Mahadev Sharma
Aspen Bibliography
Forest site productivity estimates are crucial for making informed forest resource management decisions. These estimates are valuable both for the tree species currently growing in the stands and for those being considered for future stands. Current models are generally designed for pure stands and do not account for the influence of climate on tree growth. Consequently, site index (SI) conversion equations were developed specifically for jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) trees grown in naturally originated mixed stands. This work involved sampling 186 trees (93 of each species) from 31 even-aged mixed stands (3 …

We describe an astronomical 6U CubeSat mission VERTECS (Visible Extragalactic background RadiaTion Exploration by CubeSat). The scientific purpose of VERTECS is to reveal star-formation history of the universe by observation of the extragalactic background light (EBL) in visible wavelengths. Earlier observations by sounding rockets and infrared astronomical satellites have shown that the near-infrared EBL is several times brighter than the integrated light of known galaxies. As candidates for the excess light, first-generation stars in the early universe or low-redshift intra-halo light have been proposed, but it has not been concluded. Since these objects are expected to show different emission spectra …

As spacecraft technology improves, smaller cost-effective spacecraft become capable of increasingly sophisticated Earth observation missions, including wideband Radio Frequency (RF) sensing. Current methods available for validating the RF payloads on-board these missions, such as on-orbit payload validation using a pathfinder mission, are expensive, time consuming, and difficult. The challenge of modelling the RF environment of an orbital receiver is increased by path characteristics that become nontrivial at orbital velocities and distances, as well as unique modelling challenges such as ionospheric delay and multiple transmitters. A fast, inexpensive method for validating RF sensing payloads on the ground is presented in this …

Coronagraphs are the only instruments that can capture the development of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) throughout the near-Sun space. Thus, they provide critical information for the physics of CME evolution and propagation and consequently for space weather forecasting. It makes strategic sense to lower the technological and logistical barriers for maintaining space-based coronagraphic observations. MiniCOR is an ambitious coronagraph design to address these challenges. The technical goal of MiniCOR is to demonstrate that a low-cost miniaturized 3U coronagraph, can return data with higher cadence and equal or better sensitivity than currently operating full-size coronagraphs. MiniCOR is a funded project under …

Current spacecraft propulsion technologies are broadly divided into chemical and electric propulsion modes, each of which has unique advantages. It is common for both systems to have a place in interplanetary spacecraft, but the size, weight, and power required to carry two separate propulsion systems is extremely limiting for small spacecraft such as CubeSats. The upcoming NASA STMD-funded Green Propulsion Dual Mode (GPDM) mission will demonstrate on-orbit a novel dual-mode propulsion system known as the GPDM Propulsion System that uses the AF-M315E/ASCENT green monopropellant to feed both a chemical 100 mN monopropellant thruster and four electrospray thrusters. GPDM will fly …

Recent advances in hardware and software technology have made it possible to implement more resource-demanding deep learning algorithms in lighter hardware environments. This creates opportunities to use deep learning for space applications on increasingly lighter and smaller spacecraft. The goal of this work is to demonstrate the viability of implementing a Neural Network Execution Framework (NNEF) that can facilitate a cross-platform and unified deployment of any neural network onboard a spacecraft hardware and flight software. The NNEF generalizes the neural network inference process, regardless of the original framework in which they were created. This allows users to focus on the …

ARICA-2 (AGU Remote Innovative CubeSat Alert System-2) is a 2U CubeSat that aims to demonstrate a real-time alert system for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using commercial satellite network devices. 1U CubeSat ARICA, the predecessor of ARICA-2, was launched in 2021, but to date has not successfully communicated. For this reason, we started to develop ARICA-2 as a re-challenge project, and the development is underway for the launch in Japanese fiscal year 2025. In addition to the two commercial satellite communication devices previously used, we will use a UHF (Ultra High Frequency) Communication device that communicates in the amateur radio band. In …
