Recent Developments In Numerical Electron Optics, Erwin K. Kasper Jan 1984

Recent Developments In Numerical Electron Optics, Erwin K. Kasper

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The familiar methods for the numerical calculation of fields in electron optical devices are outlined briefly. for the solution of self- adjoint elliptic differential equations in orthogonal curvilinear coordinate systems a favourable ninepoint discretization is worked out which can be applied favourably e.g. to spherical mesh grids. The field calculation in magnetic deflection systems by means of an integral equation method is also highly advantageous. The methods for the field calculation can be still more improved by means of suitable hybrid procedures.

A second and shorter contribution is concerned with ray tracing and aberrations. Some favourable numerically stable new forms …

Proton Transfers Between First‐ And Second‐Row Atoms: (H2ohsh2)+ And (H3nhsh2)+, Steve Scheiner Jan 1984

Proton Transfers Between First‐ And Second‐Row Atoms: (H2ohsh2)+ And (H3nhsh2)+, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Ab initio molecular orbital methods are used to study the transfer of the central proton along the hydrogen bonds in (H2OHSH2)+ and (H3NHSH2)+. Proton transfer potentials are generated using the 4‐31G∗ basis set at the Hartree–Fock level for various values for the hydrogen bond length R(XS). Full geometry optimizations are carried out at each stage of proton transfer. The barrier to proton transfer increases as the hydrogen bond is lengthened. For a given bond length, the highest barriers are observed for transfer from …

An Analysis Of Microstructural Factors Which Influence The Use Of Muscle As A Food, R. G. Cassens, C. E. Carpenter, T. J. Eddinger Jan 1984

An Analysis Of Microstructural Factors Which Influence The Use Of Muscle As A Food, R. G. Cassens, C. E. Carpenter, T. J. Eddinger

Food Structure

Study of structure of muscle provides information on the location and arrangement of various components and the changes which may be inflicted upon them. The structura l features of muscle have been descr ibed in detail down to the molecular level, but rega rding its use as a food, special interest centers on the connective tissue component and on myofibri llar proteins . Muscle comprises about 1/3 of the live weight of the a ni mal and is not static , but rather is subject to major changes in properties associated with growth, repair and se nescence. It is apparent …

The Role Of Gap Filaments In Muscle And In Meat, R. H. Locker Jan 1984

The Role Of Gap Filaments In Muscle And In Meat, R. H. Locker

Food Structure

The neglected "gap filaments" are now beginning to receive close attention in several centers, in terms of organisation, composition and function. The author's model for their connections gave them a role as cores to A-filaments. This review attempts to weigh the implications of such a role, and relevant evidence, old and new. New ideas arising largely from PAGE*and immunochemkal studies on candidate proteins, and from the developing concept of the cytoskeleton, are considered.

The author's theory of meat tenderness, based on G-filaments, has been tested by PAGE studies on changes in the large structural proteins (particularly titin and nebulin) during …

Electron Image Simulation: A Complementary Processing Technique, Michael A. O'Keefe Jan 1984

Electron Image Simulation: A Complementary Processing Technique, Michael A. O'Keefe

Scanning Electron Microscopy

At present it is difficult to use direct image processing techniques to determine the specimen structure from electron micrographs obtained under non-linear imaging conditions, and impossible when the effects of dynamical scattering are strong (as in the case of thicker specimens). However, computing techniques are available to simulate high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images of postulated model structures. With these techniques it is possible to confirm the validity of interpretation of recorded micrographs, to help analyze crystal defects, to characterize microscope parameters, and to determine the ranges of validity of commonly used interpretive approximations. Because processed micrographs can lead to …

Pitch Angle Properties Of Magnetospheric Thermal Protons And Satellite Sheath Interference In Their Observation, Jan Josef Sojka, G. L. Wrenn, J.F. E. Johnson Jan 1984

Pitch Angle Properties Of Magnetospheric Thermal Protons And Satellite Sheath Interference In Their Observation, Jan Josef Sojka, G. L. Wrenn, J.F. E. Johnson

All Physics Faculty Publications

Cold proton observations from the geosynchronous GEOS 2 satellite are presented to show the pitch angle distribution of the refilling cold ion population found beyond the plasmapause. This refilling cold ion population flows into the depleted equatorial regions of the flux tubes from the topside ionosphere. This refilling is observed both day and night. The ions have energies between 0.5 and 3 eV. These energy characteristics are consistent with other recent observations. Although the observed angular distribution of these ions is highly complex, when allowance is made for the satellite sheath several conclusions can be made concerning the ion pitch …

The Application And Effectiveness Of Slow Sand Filtration In The United States, L. A. Slezak, Ronald C. Sims Jan 1984

The Application And Effectiveness Of Slow Sand Filtration In The United States, L. A. Slezak, Ronald C. Sims

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

A survey of 27 slow sand filtration plants in the United States indicated that most of these plants are currently serving communities of fewer than 10 000 persons, are more than 50 years old, and are effective and inexpensive to operate. A slow sand filtration research facility in Logan, Utah, was compared with the operating plants to determine if locally available, unsieved sand achieved similar results. The 75‐m3/d research facility performed well in removing turbidity, coliform bacteria, and particles of a size representative of Giardia cysts.

Human Health Effects Assays, Ronald C. Sims, J. L. Sims, R. R. Dupont

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Current development and use of short-term bioassays to evaluate potential human health hazards of environmental chemical exposure has been the focus of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Second and Third Symposia on the Ap plication of Short-Term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures.1'2 Topics addressed included development and applications of bioassays, collection and preparation of environmental samples, characterization of hazardous components using bioassays, and environmental assessment. Bartsch and Tomabis,3 using six mutagenicity assays including sub mammalian and mammalian assays to evaluate the quantitative relationship between carcinogenicity and mutagenicity for 532 chemicals, concluded …

A Report On A Pilot Study On Cattle Grazed Patches In Herbaceous Vegetation, Victor Povilaitis Jan 1984

A Report On A Pilot Study On Cattle Grazed Patches In Herbaceous Vegetation, Victor Povilaitis

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Since the late 1960's, the term station (Goddard 1968), feeding station (Novellie 1978, Underwood 1982), and feeding site (Underwood 1983) have been used to describe the area in front of a foraging animal in which it can access forage without moving its front legs. The area is a hypothecial semicircle in front of the grazing animal, but the vegetation actually impacted by defoliation may be considered a "grazed patch," which may be the sum of several feeding stations. As animals graze the vegetation in an area, grazed patches are created. Presently, it is undocumented if such patches influence the behavior …

Vicuñas And Pastoralists On The Peruvian Altiplano, Rachel Walker Jan 1984

Vicuñas And Pastoralists On The Peruvian Altiplano, Rachel Walker

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Many articles, government publications, and a fairly lengthy book have been written about the vicuña (hereafter vicugna), as can be seen by the bibliography, which is in no way exhaustive. What I try to do here is bring together several factors that have not, to my knowledge, been documented in one article; the sociological and cultural aspects of the altiplano (high plains) community which is affected by the PEURV (Proyect Especial por la Utilization Racional de la Vicugna); some of the political and economic aspects of the campesino's life; the vicugna and its environmental adaption to the harsh puna (high …

Management Of Groundwater Recharge Areas In The Mouth Of Weber Canyon, Calvin G. Clyde, Christopher J. Duffy, Edward P. Fisk, Daniel H. Hoggan, David E. Hansen Jan 1984

Management Of Groundwater Recharge Areas In The Mouth Of Weber Canyon, Calvin G. Clyde, Christopher J. Duffy, Edward P. Fisk, Daniel H. Hoggan, David E. Hansen

Reports

Proper management of surface and groundwater resources is important for their prolonged and a beneficial use. Within the Weber Delta area there has existed a continual decline in the piezometric surface of the deep confined aquifer over the last 40 years. This decline ranges from approximately 20 feet along the eastern shore of the Great Salt Lake to 50 feet along in the vicinity of Hill Air Force Base. Declines in the piezometric surface are undesirable because of the increased well installation costs, increased pumping costs, decreased aquifer storage, increased risk of salt water intrusion, and the possibility of land …

Water For The 21st Century, Will It Be There?, Richard C. Peralta, Ann W. Peralta, Leslie E. Mack

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

One of Arkansas' major water management goals is to provide adequate water for agriculture, the economic mainstay of the state. Effective water management requires inputs from engineering, economics, law, administration, and environmental concern, all in a matrix of public education, participation and communications. Groundwater levels in eastern Arkansas have been dropping for decades as irrigation for rice, other row crops, and fish farming have increased substantially. Additional surface water supplies are available from the adjacent rivers but there are competition, conflict of use, and jurisdictional problems involved. A critical path sequence chart was designed to include all the research steps …
