Long-Term Flow Test #1, Roosevelt Hot Springs, Utah, D. D. Faulder
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The Roosevelt Hot Springs, Utah geothermal field has been the site of numerous investigations into the behavior of a geothermal system. However, a detailed description of the reservoir is lacking. This paper presents the results of the 237 day Long-Term Flow Test #1, conducted in 1977 and 1978, followed by a 100 day pressure buildup. The responses from one production well and three pressure observation wells, ranging 600 to 12,000 feet from the production well, were used. This study illustrates the utility of a reevaluation of a geothermal system using old, pre-exploitation data and is part of an ongoing case …

Patches In The Polar Ionosphere: Ut And Seasonal Dependence, Jan Josef Sojka, M. D. Bowline, Robert W. Schunk
All Physics Faculty Publications
The seasonal and UT dependencies of patches in the polar ionosphere are simulated using the Utah State University time dependent ionospheric model (TDIM). Patch formation is achieved by changing the plasma convection pattern in response to temporal changes in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) By component during periods of southward IMF. This mechanism redirects the plasma flow from the dayside high-density region, which is the source of the tongue of ionization (TOI) density feature, through the throat and leads to patches, rather than a continuous TOI. The model predicts that the patches are absent at winter solstice (northern hemisphere) …

Model Study Of Multiple Polar Cap Arcs: Occurrence And Spacing, Lie Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain
All Physics Faculty Publications
A new scenario for the formation of multiple polar cap arcs is proposed based on the results from a time‐dependent electrodynamic model of polar cap arcs developed by Zhu et al. [1993]. The results suggest that the appearance of multiple polar cap arcs may not be due to multiple structures in the magnetospheric source region, but instead, may primarily be determined by the coupled magnetosphere‐ionosphere system in which the ionosphere plays an active role. It was found that with the same magnetospheric driver, a strong ionospheric background convection and an ionospheric background Hall conductance in the range of from 0.5 …

IMAGINE," THE SCENARIO would begin, "a room/place/device/system that will serve all your communication needs for information, entertainment, messaging, home shopping, protective security, banking and much more .... " In countless books, articles, speeches, television documentaries and news programs these and other promises have been made for decades. In his visionary science fiction work, Voices from the Sky, Arthur C. Clarke imagined this and more. So did technologists who thought cable television would be the instrument for multifaceted new media services. Others spoke of a cosy menage a trois of telephone, television and computer, an integrated world of multimedia wonder wherein …
An Application Of The Linear Expenditure Systems To The Pattern Of Consumer Behavior In Taiwan, Tsangyao Chang, Chris Fawson
An Application Of The Linear Expenditure Systems To The Pattern Of Consumer Behavior In Taiwan, Tsangyao Chang, Chris Fawson
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This study reveals certain systematic tendencies in consumer behavior in Taiwan from 1951 to 1990. The method of systems estimation and precision estimates revealed by significant t statistics and higher R2 make the system of equations a useful tool to characterize broad tendencies in individual allocation of expenditure behavior. This analysis has important implications for government production strategies relating to price and subsidy policies and promotion of reasonable standards of social welfare and health. In general, this study represents our attempt to make a systematic estimation of consumer demand to identify the broad tendencies of individual demand behavior in Taiwan.

Identifying Buyer Market Areas And The Impact Of Buyer Concentration In Feeder Cattle Markets Using Mapping And Spatial Statistics, Deevon Bailey, B. Wade Brorsen, Michael R. Thomsen
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
The size and shape of market areas for buyers from four major cattle feeding areas (Dodge City, Amarillo, Omaha, and Greeley) are determined by mapping data from the nation's largest video auction. Spatial statistics are also examined to determine their ability to identify market areas for feeder cattle. Mapping shows that procurement areas for feeder cattle buyers are large, irregularly shaped, and overlap substantially. Currently available spatial statistics were not found to be helpful in defining market areas so a new statistic (BTiJ was dev~loped to determine primary market areas. Feeder cattle buyers behave as oligopsonists in counties where most …

The unique geological formation known as Devils Tower annually draws nearly half a million visitors. Most visitors enjoy photographing the butte, hiking area trails, camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. A few thousand technical rock climbers annually travel from across the country and the world to scale the butte's nearly vertical cracks and columns. Devils Tower also is a sacred site to several American Indian peoples of the northern plains. Increasingly, American Indian groups travel to the monument to perform traditional cultural practices. Devils Tower is highly regarded as having significant values that make it worthy of inclusion to the National …
Improving The Implementation Of A Research Tool: Methods To Increase Library Survey Response Rates, Judiith R.J. Johnson, Anne Hedrich
Improving The Implementation Of A Research Tool: Methods To Increase Library Survey Response Rates, Judiith R.J. Johnson, Anne Hedrich
Library Faculty & Staff Presentations
In the winter of 1992 we began research into the implementation of a university-wide survey. This project grew out of discussion about ways Merrill Library could be more responsive through collection development to changing trends in course offerings and research emphases at Utah State University. It was felt that our collection development policies traditionally answered and were based upon teaching needs but might not address research-related needs adequately. This was in large part due to a lack of information about the evolution of research directions throughout the USU community. The problem was further exacerbated by the spiraling costs of journal …

Theoretical Study Of Polar Cap Arcs: Time-Dependent Model And Its Applications, Lie Zhu, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, D. J. Crain
All Physics Faculty Publications
A time-dependent theoretical model of polar cap arcs developed during the Coupling, Energetics, and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions/High-Latitude Plasma Structures (CEDAR/HLPS) campaigns in the past two years is briefly described. In the model the electrodynamics of the polar cap arcs are treated self-consistently in the frame of the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system. The preliminary simulation results of the temporal evolution and spatial structure of the polar cap arcs for both winter and summer conditions are presented. The model can be used to conduct both the model-observation study of specific features of the polar cap arcs and the quantitative theoretical study of …

Ionospheric Response To The Sustained High Geomagnetic Activity During The March '89 Great Storm, Jan Josef Sojka, Robert W. Schunk, W. F. Denig
All Physics Faculty Publications
A simulation was conducted to model the high-latitude ionospheric response to the sustained level of high geomagnetic activity for the great magnetic storm period of March 13-14, 1989. The geomagnetic and solar activity indices and the DMSP F8 and F9 satellite data for particle precipitation and high-latitude convection were used as inputs to a time-dependent ionospheric model (TDIM). The results of the TDIM were compared to both DMSP plasma density data and ground-based total electron content (TEC) measurements for the great storm period as well as with earlier storm observations. The comparisons showed that the overall structure of the high-latitude …
Preventing Pesticide Contamination Of Groundwater While Maximizing Irrigated Crop Yield, Richard C. Peralta, M. A. Hegazy, G. Musharrafieh
Preventing Pesticide Contamination Of Groundwater While Maximizing Irrigated Crop Yield, Richard C. Peralta, M. A. Hegazy, G. Musharrafieh
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
A simulation/optimization model is developed for maximizing irrigated crop yield while avoiding unacceptable pesticide leaching. The optimization model is designed to help managers prevent non-point source contamination of shallow groundwater aquifers. It computes optimal irrigation amounts for given soil, crop, chemical, and weather data and irrigation frequencies. It directly computes the minimum irrigated crop yield reduction needed to prevent groundwater contamination. Constraint equations used in the model maintain a layered soil moisture volume balance; describe percolation, downward unsaturated zone solute transport and pesticide degradation; and limit the amount of pesticide reaching groundwater. Constraints are linear, piecewise linear, nonlinear, and exponential. …

The Source Hydrology Of Severe Sustained Drought In Th Southwestern U.S., David G. Tarboton
Reports
This paper considers the risk of drought and develops drough scenarios for use in the study of severe sustained drought in the Southwestern United States. The focus is on the Colorado River gbasin and regions to which Colorado River water is exported, especially southern California, which depends on water from the Colorado River as well as the four major rivers in northern California. Drought scenarios are developed using estimates of unimpaired historic streamflow as well as reconstructions of streamflow based on tree ring widths. Drought scenarios in the Colorado River are defined on the basis of annual flow at Lees …

David Lee, fondly known in Utah as the "pig poet" for his collection The Porcine Canticles (1984), tells the story of his seventh-grade teacher's poetry assignment from a Texas childhood:
She sent us to the li-berry to find a pome. We were supposed to change some words to make it our pome. I came back with "Hell hath no fury like a sow with pigs." She gave me an F. (Magid 1993, 1)
Today, when David Lee reads one of his pig poems to audiences around the state, they chuckle and applaud.
Improved Visualization Of Dna In Aqueous Buffer With The Atomic Force Microscope, Magdalena Bezanilla, Carlos J. Bustamante, Helen G. Hansma
Improved Visualization Of Dna In Aqueous Buffer With The Atomic Force Microscope, Magdalena Bezanilla, Carlos J. Bustamante, Helen G. Hansma
Scanning Microscopy
An improved method has been developed for imaging deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in aqueous buffer with the atomic force microscope (AFM). DNA on untreated mica can be imaged in aqueous buffer with the AFM if the DNA is deposited onto the mica in a buffer with HEPES and MgCl2, if the sample is rinsed thoroughly with high water pressure, and if the imaging is done with an electron beam-deposited (EBD) tip that has been deposited in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The water rinse removes DNA that is otherwise easily scraped off the substrate. There is evidence that sharper …

Optimization And Application Of Jet-Freezing, T. Müller, S. Moser, M. Vogt, C. Daugherty, M. V. Parthasarathy
Scanning Microscopy
Cryofixation is considered to be the best method for immobilizing biological material in its natural state. In jet-freezing, the specimen typically is sandwiched between two carriers and kept in place while a coolant is moved very rapidly against the opposite surfaces. The JFD 030 jet-freezing device has been used to optimize the operating parameters. The course of the temperature in place of a specimen was measured with thermocouples and recorded by an IBM-compatible personal computer using a specifically developed software program. Mean cooling rates, over the temperature range of 273K to 173K, achievable with different cryogens, including the non-flammable HCFC …

Whether on foot. bicycle. horseback. or in vehicles, most visitors come to Canyonlands National
Park (Canyonlands) to experience solitude or to "get away from people." Yet visitation to
Canyonlands has risen exponentially over the past five years (Figures I and 2). Visitation is expected to continue to rise. As a function of this increase in number of visitors, adverse impacts to Canyonlands' resources have increased and the visitors' ability to find solitude has decreased. Since the mandate of the National Park Service (NPS) is to balance visitor access
to the parks with preservation and protection of natural and cultural resources, …

Precipitation Gauge Testing On The Wasatch Plateau, Utah, During Early 1993, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation
Meterology
The Bureau of Reclamation performed an independent evaluation of an ETI (Electronic Techniques, Inc.) precipitation gauge at the High Altitude Site on the western slope of the Wasatch Plateau in central Utah. The ETI gauge could provide a desirable alternative to conventional recording gauges in several applications, including evaluation of cloud seeding projects, if it performs as advertised. The testing program was intended to determine its performance in a winter mountain environment. The ETI precipitation gauge proved to be reliable from time of installation in late November 1992 until removal in late March 1993. The only problem found was an …

The Direct Sensing Of Damage To Ion Implanted Materials, J. S. C. Mckee, M. S. Mathur, G. R. Smith
Scanning Microscopy
Material damage caused by the implantation of a high concentration of hydrogenic ions requires regular remote monitoring in order to study the atomic and nuclear reaction processes taking place within each sample. Real time continuous measurements of acoustic emission, X-ray production and emitted particle flux enable processes such as bubble or crack formation, changes in crystalline order, and nuclear fusion reactions can be studied in detail through examination of secondary or associated emission products. Fracturing of a material may generate a unique signature which, when taken in conjunction with time-averaged quantities such as changes in resistivity, surface strain, and induced …

Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of The Palatine Mucosa And Its Microvascular Architecture In The Rat, S. Sugioka, H. Ike
Scanning Microscopy
Detailed observations were made on the structure and microvasculature of the palatine mucosa of the rat by means of microvascular corrosion casts and epithelium-digested specimens using scanning electron microscopy. The rat palate was divided into four regions according to the characteristics of the palatine plicae. In the atrial region, no transverse palatine plicae were present, but there were longitudinal ridges and folds in the median area. These structures contribute to the transportation of rough and grainy foods with the assistance of the hairy buccal part. Capillary loops in the ridge and folds appeared as continuous, sagittally elongated loops. In the …

Suburban Deer Management: A Matter Of Perspective, Paul D. Curtis, Daniel J. Decker, Rebecca J. Stout, Milo E. Richmond
Wildlife Damage Management Conference
Many metropolitan areas in the eastern United States are experiencing management conflicts associated with overabundant deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations. Sometimes these deer populations exceed the biological carrying capacity of available habitat and wildlife acceptance capacity (Decker and Purdy 1988) of local residents. For nearly 2 decades, a deer management controversy has been developing in Durand Eastman Park and the Town of Irondequoit, located in the greater Rochester metropolitan area, Monroe County, New York. Three local citizen organizations concerned about deer are described, and each has promoted various nonhunting alternatives to reduce human-deer problems. For 15 years, the New …
