Establishment Of White Oak Seedlings With Three Handling Methods On Deep-Tilled Minesoil During Reclamation, Roger Kjelgren, Brenda Cleveland, Mike Foutch
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Three methods to improve first-year establishment of bare-root white oak on compacted minesoil during reclamation were investigated. We applied tree-shelter, hydrophilic-polymer, and nitrogen-fertilization treatments to seedlings planted on deep- and untilled soil. Predawn and midday water potential, and midday stomatal conductance (gs) were measured in early, mid, and late season. Leaf area, trunk diameter growth, and survival were measured in early fall. Single-row deep tillage loosened the soil to 0.7 m (2.3 ft), but outward from the midrow the effect dissipated rapidly. Water stress increased in all treatments during an extended mid-summer dry period. deep tillage resulted in higher initial …

The amyloid precursor protein (APP) is an integral membrane component of eukaryotic cells. A variety of research approaches have addressed the contribution of the β amyloid peptide region of the APP to neuritic plaque structure and formation in the Alzheimer disease brain as well as the relationship between β amyloid accumulation and the occurrence of dementia. However, there is limited information available concerning the cellular consequences of amyloid deposition. The present studies were undertaken to investigate the relationship between β amyloid and intercellular junctions. Transfected PC12 cell lines, that overexpress the β amyloid peptide, exhibit structural and functional alterations at …

Autoantibodies To Neurofilament Proteins In Autistic Subjects, Rex Elbert Averett
Autoantibodies To Neurofilament Proteins In Autistic Subjects, Rex Elbert Averett
Biology
Immunological studies of autistic subjects have revealed certain features that are also found in subjects with other autoimmune diseases. Autoantibodies to neural tissue antigens and neurofilament proteins have been implicated in several disease conditions (e. g. autism, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, retinitis pigmentosa, spongiform virus encephalopathies, and perhaps other neurological disorders). Sera from patients with these diseases have been examined with immunoblotting, immunofluorescence microscopy, and enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay and each has found antibodies that react with proteins of neurofilaments. At present, the etiology and pathological mechanisms of most of these diseases are unknown. This study was undertaken to investigate the …
The Organization Of Shrub-Steppe Spider Assemblages: A Hierarchical Evaluation Of Deterministic And Stochastic Influences, William James Ehmann
The Organization Of Shrub-Steppe Spider Assemblages: A Hierarchical Evaluation Of Deterministic And Stochastic Influences, William James Ehmann
Biology
This dissertation addresses deterministic and stochastic factors that are expected to influence the co-occurrence of spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in a shrub-steppe environment. First, a field test assessed the role of substrate diameter in spider habitat selection using artificial habitat modules. Second, the effect of alternative spider dispersal modes (passive, long-distance, aerial transport versus active, local ground transport) on assemblage patterns on sagebrush (Artemisia) shrubs was evaluated using an exclosure design. Spider counts from exclosure and reference shrubs were compared at two spatial scales (shrub and plot) and among three potential levels of spider assemblage organization (individuals, species, and …

Federal and state legislation (i.e., PL 94-142 combined with PL 99-457) Provide for a free and appropriate education for children with disabilities, between the ages of three and 21, in settings with or in close proximity to children without disabilities (Edmister & Ekstrand, 1987; Odom & McEvoy, 1988; Radonovich & Houck, 1990; Salisbury, 1990). Settings in close proximity to children without disabilities are referred to as the least restrictive environment {LRE). The LRE provision requires educational agencies to ensure children with disabilities are, to the maximum extent appropriate, educated with children who are developing typically (Turnbull & Turnbull, 1990). The …
Identification And Conceptualization Of Sexual Abuse Resiliency Factors: A Review Of The Literature, Heidi J. Moss
Identification And Conceptualization Of Sexual Abuse Resiliency Factors: A Review Of The Literature, Heidi J. Moss
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Resiliency, while historically grounded and defined, lacks important conceptual clarity when considering the area of sexual abuse resiliency. Considerable theoretical effort has been dedicated to this phenomena in certain specific areas of human development (e.g., children) with empirical endeavors to validate it's relevance. To date there seems to be consensus with the notion that three specific variables are correlated with resiliency outcomes, namely, biological, psychological and social influences. It is posited that these three primary variables and their substantive variables independently, as well as interactively, buffer the effects of abuse one may experience during the course of a life time. …
The Acoustic Transparency Of Ad*Hear Wax Guards When Measuring Dpoaes, Tiffany Lloyd Shelton
The Acoustic Transparency Of Ad*Hear Wax Guards When Measuring Dpoaes, Tiffany Lloyd Shelton
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Approximately one to six of every 1,000 children is born deaf or with some degree of permanent hearing loss (Parving, 1993; Watkins, Baldwin, & McEnery, 1991; White, & Behrens, 1993). Reduced hearing acuity during infancy and early childhood may interfere with the development of the child's speech and verbal language skills (NIH, 1993). Reduced auditory input can also have harmful effects on the child's social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development (NIH, 1993). Because hearing is crucial for the development of speech and verbal language skills, the developmental future of a child born with a significant hearing loss depends greatly on …
Negative Political Advertising, Negative News Coverage: A Connection?, Karrie Cook
Negative Political Advertising, Negative News Coverage: A Connection?, Karrie Cook
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Although negative advertising and negative news coverage of candidates is not a new phenomenon there is a perception among the news media that the number of negative ads has increased in the past decade (1984-1992), especially in the past five years. This perception has led reporters to increase their coverage and scrutiny of such ads, while at the same time showing them repeatedly on news casts. There are many reasons given as to why the number of negative ads and negative election reports may have increased, including more consulting companies, changes in election process in the 1960s, independent political groups …
New Directions In Medical School Admissions, Stephen D. Neeleman
New Directions In Medical School Admissions, Stephen D. Neeleman
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In 1910, American medicine underwent a thorough review of its practices, policies, and most importantly, its education. The review was conducted by Abraham Flexner, under commission of the Carnegie Foundation. Flexner's task was to determine the uniformity of medical learning throughout the United States, and to develop a systematic approach whereby the nation could improve its overall health training. The subsequent Flexner report changed the face of medical education for decades. Its tenets provoked revolutionary changes in the medical school process that are still in use today. However, some have begun to question facets of the report, and even introduce …
Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson
Discussion And Measurement Of Soil Erosion In Iceland, Kimberly Jane Richardson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Soil erosion has occurred since the beginning of time. It is a natural process, but one that has been increasing at an alarming rate. Once soil is eroded--whether it is blown out to sea or washed down a river to sedimentize a lake--it is lost. It is almost impossible to reestablish similar soil components and characteristics in a given system. Since soil and vegetation reestablishment is expensive, the prevention of soil erosion by controlling its causes has become the most cost-effective reclamation effort.
After spending six months in Iceland, I wrote this paper on the unique erosion problems facing that …

The Design Of An Augmentative Communications Device, Darren Blaser, Scott Sorenson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
There is an extremely large number of people in the modem world who have difficulty communicating. Among these are approximately 25 million people with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disability that is usually caused during, or shortly after birth. Cerebral palsy usually affects a person's motor skills and sense of balance, often rendering them incapable of speaking clearly enough to be understood well. Because this group of people cannot communicate as effectively as other individuals, many uninformed people suppose they do not have as great a need to speak, to say things like, "How are you?", ''I'm Hungry", "Thank …

Officially Reported Characteristics Of Spouse Abuse Victims Seeking Assistance In Utah, 1992, Kevin D. Thompson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Spouse abuse is a significant social problem that has recently received considerable attention by family researchers. National studies have estimated the incidence of spouse abuse in the United States, but few studies have been conducted at the state or local level.
Data were obtained from the Utah Division of Family Services Domestic Violence Client Record (Form 741-S) reporting system. A total of 1,363 primary victims of spouse abuse was identified for the calendar year 1992.
It is posited that victims of low socioeconomic status and victims of severe physical abuse are more likely to return to their own home after …
Japanese American Youth In Topaz Relocation Center, Utah: An Oral History, Akiko J. Tohmatsu
Japanese American Youth In Topaz Relocation Center, Utah: An Oral History, Akiko J. Tohmatsu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This project examines Japanese American youth in Topaz High School, a school set up in a War Relocation Center during 1942 to 1945. It looks at what students were taught there, as well as what they felt, thought, heard, and saw.
Oral histories collected from Japanese American former internees constitute the main methodology. An oral history enables us to know the feelings and emotions involved in evacuation at the same time as it provides us with more human insight, such as human perspectives and personal reminiscences, which are not available in historical, social, or political accounts.
Findings of this project …
Cloning And Characterization Of Syr2: A Gene From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Involved In The Response To Syringomycin, Paul Cliften
Cloning And Characterization Of Syr2: A Gene From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Involved In The Response To Syringomycin, Paul Cliften
Biology
To study syringomycin's mode of action, a gene that confers sensitivity to specific syringomycin-resistant mutants was cloned and characterized. SYR2 was identified by complementing syringomycin-resistant strains 13N-F2 and 28N-D6 with a wild-type genomic library. Several overlapping clones were isolated. A 2 kilobase DNA fragment was subcloned and sequenced. The sequence revealed an open reading frame of 1047 nucleotides that encodes a protein of 349 amino acids. The sequence was identical to the yeast gene SUR2. Comparisons with sequences in the SwissProtein database showed that Syr2 had no significant homology to know proteins. Syr2 showed significant similarity to a protein …
Relationships Among Dictyostelium Plasmids And Study Of The Ddp1 Plasmid Origin Of Replication, Hidenori Kiyosawa
Relationships Among Dictyostelium Plasmids And Study Of The Ddp1 Plasmid Origin Of Replication, Hidenori Kiyosawa
Biology
Three new Dictyostelium plasmid families were established: the Ddp1 plasmid family contains Ddp1, Dmp1, and Dmp2; the Dpp1 plasmid family contains Dpp1A, Dpp1B, and Dpp2; and the Dpp3 plasmid family contains Dpp3, Dpp4, and Dpp5. Plasmids Dpp1B, Dpp4, and Dpp5 were discovered in this work. The Ddp1 plasmid family contains two characteristic open reading frames: a G1 or G1-like open reading frame and a G5 G5-like open reading frame. These, along with an origin of replication, appear to comprise the basic replicon of the Ddp1 plasmid family. Besides the basic replicon, Ddp1 possesses four extra genes, G2/G3/D4, G4/D5, …
Interactions Of Harvester Ants And Seeds In A Sagebrush-Steppe Ecosystem: The Effect Of Trunk Trail Foraging, John F. Mull
Interactions Of Harvester Ants And Seeds In A Sagebrush-Steppe Ecosystem: The Effect Of Trunk Trail Foraging, John F. Mull
Biology
The primary goal of this study was to document spatial variation in the interactions between a granivore, the western harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis), and its seed resources in the semiarid sagebrush-steppe of southwestern Wyoming. A major focus of this research was the effect of foraging trail use by P. occidentalis on spatial patterns of seed predation. Three seed removal experiments, soil seed sampling and an experiment designed to test the role of visual landmarks on foraging trail formation were the major elements of this investigation. In the first two seed experiments, seed removal rates, from both high- and …
Advanced Navigation For Planetary Vehicles Applying An Approximate Mapping Technique, Timothy R. Mcjunkin
Advanced Navigation For Planetary Vehicles Applying An Approximate Mapping Technique, Timothy R. Mcjunkin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis provides a method for compressing the information provided by JPL Mars rover obstacle sensors by creating an approximate map of the terrain around the vehicle. This thesis demonstrates that this method provides adequate information for a human operator to negotiate complex obstacles fields.
By dividing the area around the vehicle into regions and classifying each region as to how dangerous (impassable), the sensor data can be accumulated with minimal overhead. The terrain in each region has a number between zero and one, with zero meaning completely passable and one meaning completely impassable. A continuum of possible values between …

The Song of the Family
I do not believe that lives are lived in isolation, but rather are connected by ties of humanity and of family. For me because of this intimate human connection, every life experience, trivial or tremendous, is a poem. The poems blend into one--a great symphony of the human condition. An experience, even if left unverbalized, shapes the minds of both the one experiencing it and those connected to him or her by either close or distant ties.
In this collection I combine the poetic experiences most relevant in shaping me. They are the songs of …
A Proposed Analysis Of Planning Factors Within The Interpretive Planning Process, Christopher W. Sands
A Proposed Analysis Of Planning Factors Within The Interpretive Planning Process, Christopher W. Sands
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Every year, millions of people visit parks and preserves and in the process, learn about the natural and cultural resources of these areas. These resources typically include, but are not limited to, unique features of geology, hydrology, wildlife, vegetation, and historical and prehistorical influences. Many of these resources may be fragile, which is often the reason for park or preserve establishment, and therefore vulnerable to the impacts created through uncontrolled visitor use. If these resources are not protected from improper recreational use, the activities have the potential to influence the species composition and diversity of vegetation, soil properties and stability …

The Tail Wags The Dog: State Versus Federal Control In The Public Domain Debate, 1929-1934, Kevin D. Hatfield
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis examines the evolution of public land law during the early 1930s. It focuses specifically on the development of a federal grazing policy on the remaining public domain located in the eleven western states. This period of intense intellectual conflict, concerning the relationship between private enterprise and the federal government, was a pivotal moment in the history of land law.
To explain the profound shift from the entrenched states' rights attitudes of the 1920s to the acceptance of federal control inaugurated by the Taylor Grazing Act in 1934, this thesis explores the emergence of a powerful profederal contingent from …
Psychosocial Correlates Of Criminal Behavior: Identity Styles Of Male Inmates In The Utah State Prison, Joseph M. White
Psychosocial Correlates Of Criminal Behavior: Identity Styles Of Male Inmates In The Utah State Prison, Joseph M. White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One hundred ninety-four inmates responded to a measure that taps Erikson's fifth stage of psychosocial development, dealing with the issues of identity. Information concerning previous and current criminal activity, along with basic demographic information, was also collected. Cross-checks conducted on selected information within the Utah State Department of Correction's computer system suggest validity for inmate self-reports. The criminal behavior questions were addressed in two main sections: previous and current criminal behavior.
Results illustrate consistent relationships that exist between criminal behavior and cognitive identity style (the corollary to Marcia's identity statuses). The identity styles represent the process involved with personal decision …

The Predictive Validity Of The Battelle Developmental Inventory As A Measure Of Adaptive Behavior: A 2-3 Year, Longitudinal Comparison With The Scales Of Independent Behavior, Clarice E. Jentzsch
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Within the last 5 years, researchers have given increased attention to preschool assessment. One test, the Battelle Developmental Inventory, has become increasingly popular for use with preschool-age children. Despite its frequent use by early intervention programs, few researchers have studied the technical adequacy of the Battelle. The predictive validity of the Battelle was examined, using 154 children with disabilities. Scores on the Battelle for children 3 to 5 years of age were compared with scores on the Scales of Independent Behavior administered to the same children 2 to 3 years later. Moderate to strong relationships were found between the scores. …
Competence And Acceptance Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: An Examination Of Self-Concept, Cindy S. Smith
Competence And Acceptance Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: An Examination Of Self-Concept, Cindy S. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship of the self-concepts of a sample of 248 children with developmental disabilities with demographic variables and measures of child functioning and family situational variables. In addition, responses on a measure of self-concept were compared with those of a normative sample provided by Harter. Results indicated that, using this measure and these populations, there were no differences in the self-concept of children with disabilities and those without disabilities. Canonical correlation analysis indicated that children's cognitive achievement and independent functioning skills were moderately related to their self-concepts, but demographic variables and family …
Relation Between Child Abuse Risk And Security Of Mother-Infant Attachment At One Year, Miriam Egan
Relation Between Child Abuse Risk And Security Of Mother-Infant Attachment At One Year, Miriam Egan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although previous studies have shown that children who have been abused are more likely to be classified as insecurely attached to their mothers, research has not examined risk for child abuse when measured as a continuous variable in relation to security of attachment when measured as a continuous variable. This study examined the relation between risk of child abuse (as measured by the Child Abuse Potential Inventory and the Harsh Parenting Scale) and security of mother-infant attachment (as measured by the Q-sort of Infant Attachment) at 14 and 17 months. Results supported the view that there is a negative relation …
