Environmental Assessment For Coal Planning Decisions In The Carbon Basin Area Of The Great Divide Resource Area, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessment For Coal Planning Decisions In The Carbon Basin Area Of The Great Divide Resource Area, United States Department Of The Interior Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessments (WY)
In 1982, a federal coal lease was issued for approximately 60% of the federal coal lands located in the Carbon Basin. Because this lease was still in effect at the time the current BLM land use plan (the Great Divide Resource Area Resource Management Plan-RMP-1990) covering the Carbon Basin area was prepared, it was exempt from the coal screening/planning requirements. However, development of this lease was never pursued and the lease expired in 1992. Also at the time the Great Divide RMP was prepared, there was no other interest expressed by industry in obtaining federal coal leases in the area. …

Phasic Temperature Control Appraised With The Ceres-Wheat Model, Tyler Volk, Bruce Bugbee, Francesco Tubiello
Phasic Temperature Control Appraised With The Ceres-Wheat Model, Tyler Volk, Bruce Bugbee, Francesco Tubiello
Controlled Environments
Phasic control refers to the specification of a series of different environmental conditions during a crop's life cycle, with the goal of optimizing some aspect of productivity. Because of the enormous number of possible scenarios, phasic control is an ideal situation for modeling to provide guidance prior to experiments. Here we use the Ceres-Wheat model, modified for hydroponic growth chambers, to examine temperature effects. We first establish a baseline by running the model at constant temperatures from 10°C to 30°C. Grain yield per day peaks at 15°C at a value that is 25 % higher than the yield at the …

A Novel In Vitro Model To Study The Calcification Of Biomaterials, Q. Liu, J. Weng, J. G. C. Wolke, J. R. De Wijn, C. A. Van Blitterswijk
Cells and Materials
A novel in vitro model based on a solution mainly composed of sodium, calcium, chloride and phosphate ions, was developed to study the calcification of biomaterials at near physiological conditions. This model, due to its ability to quickly calcify the tested materials, is called Accelerated Calcification Solution (ACS). Polyactive ™ 30170, Polyactive™ 70/30 and its composites with nano-apatite were used as testing materials because of their known calcification behaviour. The results showed that Polyactive™ 70/30 and its composites could calcify in ACS in a relatively short period, while the polymer without filler failed to induce calcium phosphate precipitation in more …

A Senone Based Confidence Measure For Speech Recognition, Z. Bergen, W. Ward
A Senone Based Confidence Measure For Speech Recognition, Z. Bergen, W. Ward
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
This paper describes three experiments in using frame level observation probabilities as the basis for word confidence annotation in an HMM speech recognition system. One experiment is at the word level, one uses word classes, and the other uses phone classes. In each experiment we categorize hypotheses into correct and incorrect categories by aligning a best recognition hypothesis with the known transcript. The confidence of error prediction for each class is a measure of the resolvability between the correct and incorrect histograms.

Landscape Cover-Type Modeling Using A Multi-Scale Thematic Mapper Mosaic, Collin G. Homer, R. Douglas Ramsey, Thomas C. Edwards Jr., Allan Falconer
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
Landscape ecological applications of remotely sensed data are needed over increasingly larger areas and at finer spatial scales. Within the framework of the National Biological Service Gap Analysis program, 36 Utah cover types were modeled from a state-wide Landsat TM mosaic created from 24 scenes at 30-metre resolution (219,883 sq km). The state was subset into three ecoregions for classification, with cover-type association to spectral classes defined using a two-step modeling approach. Steps included post-classification correlation of 1,758 state-wide field training sites to spectral classes, and post-classification ancillary GIS modeling using ecological parameters of elevation, slope, aspect, and location to …

Evidence That Elevated C02 Levels And Indirectly Increase Rhizosphere Denitrifier Activity, John M. Stark, D. Smart, K. Ritchie, Bruce Bugbee
Biology Faculty Publications
We examined the influence of elevated CO2 concentration on denitrifier enzyme activity in wheat rhizoplanes by using controlled environments and solution culture techniques. Potential denitrification activity was from 3 to 24 times higher on roots that were grown under an elevated CO2 concentration of 1,000 micromoles of CO2 mol-1 than on roots grown under ambient levels of CO2. Nitrogen loss, as determined by a nitrogen mass balance, increased with elevated CO2 levels in the shoot environment and with a high NO3- concentration in the rooting zone. These results indicated that aerial CO2 concentration can play a role in rhizosphere denitrifier …

Relative Intranuclear Magnesium And Phosphorus Contents In Normal And Tumor Cells Of The Human Thyroid Gland As Revealed By Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis, Geza L. Lukacs, Imre Zs.-Nagy, Janos Steiber, Ferenc Gyori, Gyorgy Balazs
Scanning Microscopy
Energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis was performed on altogether 42 surgically removed tissue specimens of 32 patients, which were taken either from intact thyroid parts or various histopathologically verified tumors of the thyroid gland. The tissue specimens were processed with the freeze-fracture-freeze-drying technique and then analyzed in the so-called bulk specimen form. The studies were carried out during the years 1980-81, when intranuclear monovalent ionic composition was studied in detail. From the retained total elemental peak list, it was possible to calculate retrospectively the relative intranuclear Mg and P contents. The data processed by nested (hierarchical) analysis of variance show that …

Video Rate Confocal Laser Scanning Reflection Microscopy In The Investigation Of Normal And Neoplastic Living Cell Dynamics, Pavel Vesely, Alan Boyde
Scanning Microscopy
The introduction of video rate confocal laser scanning microscopes (VRCLSM) used in reflection mode with high magnification, high aperture objective lenses and with further magnification by a zoom facility allowed the first detailed observations of the activity of living cytoplasm and offered a new tool for investigation of the structural transition from the living state to the specimen fixed for electron microscopy (EM). We used a Noran Odyssey VRCLSM in reflection (backscattered) mode. A greater degree of oversampling and more comfortable viewing of the live or taped video image was achieved at zoom factor 5, giving a display monitor field …
Secondary Electron Emission From Simple Metals: Comparative Studies For Al, Mg, And Be, M. Rosler
Secondary Electron Emission From Simple Metals: Comparative Studies For Al, Mg, And Be, M. Rosler
Scanning Microscopy
In the secondary electron emission (SEE) from solids, the role of different excitation processes is now as ever of special interest from both the theoretical and the experimental points of view. Depending on the primary energy, the relative importance of different excitation mechanisms related to conduction as well as core electrons will be discussed for different simple metals. So far, first principles results are available only for Al for primary energies up to 10 keV. Starting from a microscopic description of the SEE based on the transport equation formalism, calculations were performed for other nearly-free-electron metals (Mg, Be) up to …
Deposition Of Supercoiled Dna On Mica For Scanning Force Microscopy Imaging, B. Samori, I. Muzzalupo, G. Zuccheri
Deposition Of Supercoiled Dna On Mica For Scanning Force Microscopy Imaging, B. Samori, I. Muzzalupo, G. Zuccheri
Scanning Microscopy
The deposition of DNA molecules on mica is driven and controlled by the ionic densities around DNA and close to the surface of the substrate. Dramatic improvements in the efficiency and reproducibility of DNA depositions were due to the introduction of divalent cations in the deposition solutions. The ionic distributions on DNA and on mica determine the mobility of adsorbed DNA molecules, thus letting them assume thermodynamically equilibrated conformations, or alternatively trapping them in non-equilibrated conformations upon adsorption.
With these prerequisites, mica does not seem like an inert substrate for DNA deposition for microscopy, and its properties greatly affect the …
Creating Small Satellite Constellations Around The Sun, C. Mclain, M. Martinez-Sanchez, G.R. Ricker
Creating Small Satellite Constellations Around The Sun, C. Mclain, M. Martinez-Sanchez, G.R. Ricker
Small Satellite Conference
This paper deals with the propulsion and trajectory issues of creating a small satellite constellation around the Sun. The possible uses for such a constellation, including stereoscopic imaging of the Sun and gamma ray burst localization, are briefly discussed. The focus of the paper is then narrowed to a range of orbits and payload masses. Spread rate, the most important parameter for creating a sun orbiting constellation, is explained and defined. Next, it is shown that impulsive chemical propulsion is better than low thrust electric propulsion for this mission class. Finally, a full discussion of the propulsion and trajectory options …

A Multi-Channel Direct Conversion Digital Uplink Receiver, Ron Huebner, Nick Pappageorge, Lee Atkinson, Tom Seay, Erik Odeen, Ron Manherz, Stuart Golden
Small Satellite Conference
The design details of a direct block-down converting receiver which provides simultaneous demodulation of up to seven uplink channels is presented. The overall architecture is that of a block down converting receiver utilizing a fixed tuned RF front end and a single conversion. The bandwidth of interest is complex down-converted to baseband into I and Q channels, and sampled by a high speed analog-to-digital converter. The digitized I and Q data is then input to a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processor to perform coarse channelization. Finally, filtering, channelization, and demodulation is performed within a digital signal processor (DSP) dedicated to …

Near Costing As A Template For Future Small Spacecraft Missions, J.T. Hemmings
Small Satellite Conference
On February 17, 1996, NASA solidified its "faster, better, cheaper" guidelines for low cost planetary missions with the successful launch of the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft. A guide for future small spacecraft missions has now been established. NEAR, the first mission in NASA's Discovery Program for "faster, better, cheaper" planetary exploration and the first asteroid orbiter ever was designed and built at The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL). The design emphasizes simplicity, reliability, and low cost. Discovery Program criteria include a cost ceiling of $150 million (FY 92 dollars) on spacecraft development to launch plus 30 …
Streamlining Satellite Development, Testing, And Operations Using A Cots Command And Telemetry Package, Andrew Lewin
Streamlining Satellite Development, Testing, And Operations Using A Cots Command And Telemetry Package, Andrew Lewin
Small Satellite Conference
This paper discusses how modern, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) command and telemetry packages and data analysis tools can reduce cost and tighten schedules. By including the ground station from the start of the program life cycle, organizations can improve efficiency through the parallelization of activities, reuse of program resources, improvement of processes, and elimination of development tasks. The benefits of this approach are substantial for a single program. However, corporations can realize even greater productivity when subsequent programs build upon the strong foundation created by their predecessors. The methods introduced in this paper are brought to life through the example of …
