This One Weird Trick Gets Users To Stop Clicking On Clickbait, Ankit Shrestha, Arezou Behfar, Sovantharith Seng, Matthew Wright, Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen
Computer Science Student Research
Clickbait, masked behind interesting headlines and thumbnails, is often used to spread misinformation and trick users into clicking on social media posts or links that direct them to malicious websites. To help users protect against clickbait, we examined interventions based on persuasion theories including designs that used social consequence, personal consequence, and badges. To this end, we first conducted a preliminary study to translate the participants’ feedback into improving our initial designs, followed by a lab study with 20 participants (60% Male, 40% Female; 18-44 years old) aimed at understanding their perceptions of the improved interventions; we further updated our …
Bugs Pay For Days Of Steady Reservoir Releases To Reduce Hydropeaking Ecosystem Conflict, Moazzam Ali Rind, David E. Rosenberg
Bugs Pay For Days Of Steady Reservoir Releases To Reduce Hydropeaking Ecosystem Conflict, Moazzam Ali Rind, David E. Rosenberg
Civil and Environmental Engineering Student Research
Steady low reservoir releases increase downstream primary and aquatic invertebrate (bugs) production. These releases also reduce hydropeaking value, raise costs for hydropower customers, and reduce funds to maintain infrastructure and repay loans. This study quantifies the win-lose tradeoff between hydropeaking value and days per month of steady low releases at Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. We estimate win-lose tradeoffs for monthly release volumes of 0.71 to 0.95 million acre-feet from March to October 2018 and 0 to 31 days. Conservative estimates indicate that steady low releases on eight weekend days per summer month in 2018 reduced monthly hydropeaking value by $430,000 …

In Utah, there is widespread consensus that global warming is happening, and the strength of this consensus has been steadily rising since 2010. Over the last 14 years, some public opinion metrics have risen dramatically while others have been largely stable. The degree of climate impacts in Utah will depend on residents’ perceptions of climate change and support for implementing policies to help the state adapt to warmer temperatures, more extreme weather events, and other associated changes. In this fact sheet, we integrate multiple data sources to summarize the status and trends of Utahns’ opinions on climate change.

Shifting The Paradigm With Wednesday Addams: An Intersectional Analysis Of The First (Autistic) Female Latinx Detective, Camille Bassett, Jason Gilmore
Communication Studies and Philosophy Student Research
For centuries, Autistic people have been portrayed in media through two dehumanizing stereotypes, the robot and the superhuman savant. Together, the robot and the superhuman savant combine into one of the most popular hybrid stereotypes to appear in media: the detective. Past detectives have been almost exclusively white male characters, a longstanding pattern that erases Autistic women and people of color, among others. In 2022, however, Netflix’s spinoff series of The Addams Family, Wednesday, brought to the screen the first-ever female Latinx detective. This study is a thematic analysis of Wednesday as a character, the autism …

Rapid increases in wildfire area burned across North American forests pose novel challenges for managers and society. Increasing area burned raises questions about whether, and to what degree, contemporary fire regimes (1984–2022) are still departed from historical fire regimes (pre-1880). We use the North American tree-ring fire-scar network (NAFSN), a multi-century record comprising > 1800 fire-scar sites spanning diverse forest types, and contemporary fire perimeters to ask whether there is a contemporary fire surplus or fire deficit, and whether recent fire years are unprecedented relative to historical fire regimes. Our results indicate, despite increasing area burned in recent decades, that a …

Atsubp-2.0: An Integrated Web Server For The Annotation Of Arabidopsis Proteome Subcellular Localization Using Deep Learning, Naveen Duhan, Rakesh Kaundal
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
The organization of subcellular components in a cell is critical for its function and studying cellular processes, protein–protein interactions, identifying potential drug targets, network analysis, and other systems biology mechanisms. Determining protein localization experimentally is time-consuming and expensive. Due to the need for meticulous experimentation, validation, and data analysis, computational methods provide a quick and accurate alternative. Arabidopsis thaliana, a beneficial model organism in plant biology, facilitates experimentation and applies to other plants. Predicting its proteins' subcellular localization can improve our understanding of cellular processes and have applications in crop improvement and biotechnology. We propose AtSubP-2.0, an extension of …

Psychology Student Research
The present study uses action research and critical trans theory frameworks to adapt a cognitive restructuring task to assist non-binary people in minimizing internalization from sexual objectification experiences (SOEs). Nine non-binary participants completed process charts documenting their experiences with SOEs. Participants also completed interviews about their experience with the process chart. Findings explored the nine categories of the process chart and the process of completing the process charts, highlighting the power participants reclaimed by interrogating objectifying sentiments and managing their environments in the wake of SOEs. We discuss utilizing our study’s process chart to better support marginalized people through SOEs.

Iterative Refinement Of Arbitrary Micro-Optical Surfaces, Megan Plummer, Stephen Taylor, Matthew Marshall, David Brown, Robert Leonard, Seth Hyra, Spencer E. Olson
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
We introduce an adaptive optical refinement method enabling ultra-precise micro-milling of arbitrary surfaces. Through repeated iteration, our method reduces surface error without requiring significant specific surface engineering. This remediates the long sample preparation times and lack of refinement capability that previously reported methods suffer from. The iterative refinement milling method was used to produce spherical mirrors with small radii of curvature and low surface roughness for use in micro Fabry-Perot cavities. We demonstrate the use of this adaptive process to produce a variety of arbitrary surface geometries on both optical fiber tips as well as optical flats. We additionally discuss …
