Mothers On The Market: Employer Hiring Practices And Motherhood Penalties, Elizabeth Kiester May 2014

Mothers On The Market: Employer Hiring Practices And Motherhood Penalties, Elizabeth Kiester

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

While gender inequity in wages is often discussed in the media by politicians, the motherhood wage penalty receives substantially less attention. This distinct wage penalty suggests that women with children suffer a wage penalty separate from women without children. In addition, there is an employment gap between mothers and nonmothers indicating that mothers are less likely to be employed. While some argue that this is a matter of choice, I contend that mothers may face unique barriers that deny them access to the labor market. I tested this theory in two ways and in two states; Utah and California. First, …

Everybody Has The Be Someplace: Twentieth-Centure Pedagogies Of Place And Curricular Possibilities For The Intermountain West, Jacob Sheetz-Willard May 2014

Everybody Has The Be Someplace: Twentieth-Centure Pedagogies Of Place And Curricular Possibilities For The Intermountain West, Jacob Sheetz-Willard

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1977, riding a wave of environmental enthusiasm that had crested in the United States over the course of the previous decade, Wendell Berry published his classic agricultural jeremiad, The Unsettling of America. Berry, a novelist, poet, essayist, and farmer decried the environmental and cultural consequences of the large-scale, commercial agriculture that had overtaken the American landscape in the postwar years. He characterized the shift away from a producerist economy of independent farmers to a society oriented around consumption and growth as a Faustian bargain, an agricultural “colonialism” that devalued the individual and ravaged the land in the name of …

On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins Apr 2014

On The Development Of Spinoza’S Account Of Human Religion, James Simkins

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

This paper provides a narrative account of the development of Spinoza's view of human religion in terms of historical influences in Spinoza's life. Spinoza embraced a position in which the majority of religious beliefs are reduced to anthropological phenomena on naturalistic grounds. However, certain rationally grounded religious beliefs are defended as objectively valid. This paper seeks to demonstrate that the philosophical substance of Spinoza's position was derived from the philosophical work of Maimonides and Hobbes. However, the impetus behind the radical conclusions which Spinoza drew came from the atmosphere of early modern Amsterdam. It is through a novel synthesis of …

Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr. Apr 2014

Revisiting Joseph Campbell’S The Power Of Myth, Daniel Gorman Jr.

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

This paper considers the relevance of The Power of Myth to the secular study of religion. First, I identify the scholars from whom Campbell borrows concepts. I organize these scholars into three groups – the qualitative religious scholars, the quantitative religious scholars, and those who draw from both approaches. Next, I identify Joseph Campbell’s key ideas (the monomyth, the hero’s journey, the existence of a higher power or energy, the lack of myth in the modern world, and the notion that religion possesses given qualities). I then analyze the contradictions inherent within Campbell’s argument, for Campbell fails to synthesize three …

Sharing The Light Of The Sacred Fire: A Proposal For A Paradigm Shift In Psychology, Art W. Blume Ph.D. Mar 2014

Sharing The Light Of The Sacred Fire: A Proposal For A Paradigm Shift In Psychology, Art W. Blume Ph.D.

Journal of Indigenous Research

Abstract

Psychology as a science and practice developed with a Eurocentric model that has basic assumptions about humanity and our place in the world. The model places great value on individualism and individual achievement, autonomy and personal liberties, self-achievement and personal rewards.

However, the Eurocentric paradigm of individualism and autonomy in many ways is not effective to respond to global concerns that were not anticipated when psychology first developed. Local problems have become global concerns in which traditional Eurocentric assumptions about boundaries and self-interests no longer hold. Many of the issues that challenge psychological health today are too large, broad, …

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost Jan 2014

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Music has been shown to trigger old memories and induce various levels of stress relief and relaxation. My research focused on the effects of music on subjects with Alzheimer and Dementia disease. Eleven patients were selected through an informed consent process which included permission from responsible family members. During the course of three or more visits to patients in their care centers, the subjects listened to a variety of songs. These included songs that family members thought would be personally meaningful based on their knowledge of the patient’s past experiences with music. Other popular songs were selected to represent a …

Revolution, Reform, And Reticent Voices: The Effects Of Nicaragua's Dynamic Health System On Medical Professionals, James E. Gardner

Browse All Undergraduate research

The views of health professionals are an important and often overlooked aspect of changes in health policy. This paper examines the impact of healthcare reform on the medical professionals of Nicaragua over the last 40 years. First, the historical context of Nicaraguan healthcare is discussed. This history is presented as both an outgrowth of and a reaction to Nicaragua’s changing political environment. The changes in health policy over this time period are then examined through the lens of medical professionals. Several sub-topics are investigated including the relationship between perceptions of health professionals and political ideology, the inability of the younger …

Influence Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Bison, Daniel R. Macnulty, Aimee G. Tallian, Daniel R. Stahler, Douglas W. Smith Jan 2014

Influence Of Group Size On The Success Of Wolves Hunting Bison, Daniel R. Macnulty, Aimee G. Tallian, Daniel R. Stahler, Douglas W. Smith

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

An intriguing aspect of social foraging behavior is that large groups are often no better at capturing prey than are small groups, a pattern that has been attributed to diminished cooperation (i.e., free riding) in large groups. Although this suggests the formation of large groups is unrelated to prey capture, little is known about cooperation in large groups that hunt hard-to-catch prey. Here, we used direct observations of Yellowstone wolves (Canis lupus) hunting their most formidable prey, bison (Bison bison), to test the hypothesis that large groups are more cooperative when hunting difficult prey. We quantified the relationship between capture …

Farmers’ Perceptions Of The Impacts Of Human– Wildlife Conflict On Their Livelihood And Natural Resource Management Efforts In Cheha Woreda Of Guraghe Zone, Ethiopia, Dagne Mojo, Jessica Rothschuh, Mehari Alebachew

Human–Wildlife Interactions

There are several livelihood improvement and natural resource management campaigns being undertaken in Ethiopia. In Cheha Woreda District of Guraghe Zone, a research team from the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, Holetta Research Center, is undertaking a watershed-level intervention to improve sustainable land management practices among resident agrarian families. In 2011, a household survey was conducted to assess farmers’ perceptions of human–wildlife conflicts (HWC) and the effects of these conflicts on land management in Cheha Woreda. One-hundred randomly selected households in the Cheha Woreda were asked to identify any wild or domestic animals that cause damage to their crops. Additionally, …

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) outreach programs are partnerships between K-12 schools and higher education in nine states. MESA efforts introduce integrated experiences in science, mathematics and engineering to K-12 students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the STEM disciplines. This exploratory study examined the influence of selected MESA activities on students' self-efficacy, their perceptions of engineering, and their interest in engineering and other STEM fields. Field trips, guest lecturers, design competitions, hands-on activities and student career and academic advisement were of specific interest in this survey. The project also investigated the relationship between student engagement in MESA and …

Justice And Immigrant Latino Recreation Geography In Cache Valley, Utah, Jodie Madsen, Claudia Radel, Joanna Endter-Wada

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

Latinos are the largest U.S. non-mainstreamed ethnic group, and social and environmental justice considerations dictate recreation professionals and researchers meet their recreation needs. This study reconceptualizes this diverse group’s recreation patterns, looking at where immigrant Latino individuals in Cache Valley, Utah do recreate rather than where they do not. Through qualitative interviews and interactive mapping, thirty participants discussed what recreation means to them and explained their recreation site choices. Findings suggest that recreation as an activity done outside the home, for fun with others, leads participants to seek spaces with certain characteristics. Reconceiving recreation more broadly and framing it from …
