The Attitudes Of Logan City, Utah Toward Ethnic Minority Groups With Special Emphasis On The Negro, Ella D. Lewis Douglas May 1968

The Attitudes Of Logan City, Utah Toward Ethnic Minority Groups With Special Emphasis On The Negro, Ella D. Lewis Douglas

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One major purpose of the research conducted by human relations agencies has been to determine the correlates of prejudice. The analysis of data has persistently aimed at identifying those groups within the population among whom the incidence of prejudice is higher. If such groups can be identified, programs to reduce prejudice can be designed especially for them. However, there is a strong feeling in the American society that certain groups, in the population are congenitally inferior to others. These are the ethnic minority groups, such as the Negro, the Spanish-American, the Oriental, the Jew, and the American Indian. Such a …

Negro Historiography With Special Emphasis On Negro Historians Of The New School, Ella D. Lewis Douglas May 1968

Negro Historiography With Special Emphasis On Negro Historians Of The New School, Ella D. Lewis Douglas

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Except for an occasional Nat Turner, Booker T. Washington, or George W. Carver, the Negro as a person is missing from the textbooks from which the millions learn their history. The race has bulked large as a theme in American historiography, but such treatment has been largely preoccupied with Negroes en masse and as a "problem," and has rarely extended to individual, creative Negroes and their contributions to American society. It may be supposed that white, college-bred Americans can identify very few of the most celebrated Negroes who attained prominence of some sort before World War I.

The Establishment And First Six Months Of The Civilian Conservation Corps And Joe Hill, Wobbly Martyr Of Utah, Clifford G. O'Harrow May 1968

The Establishment And First Six Months Of The Civilian Conservation Corps And Joe Hill, Wobbly Martyr Of Utah, Clifford G. O'Harrow

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One of the most generally admired New Deal Agencies reflected the fact that Franklin D. Roosevelt, like his cousin Theodore was an ardent conservationist. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by providing job relief to the people. However, most of the work was carried on in the more remote areas of the states and thus escaped day to day scrutiny. The completed conservation tasks were to stand as proof of accomplishment. Most histories dismiss the CCC with a paragraph and perhaps a picture of some boys planting trees; however, 2,400,000 young men and 145,000 war veterans served in camps of the …

A Comparison Of The Functions And Population Size Of Central Places In Snohomish County, Washington And Cache County, Utah, Richard L. Dixon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study of the central places in Cache County to determine their population and function was made during the academic year 1967-1968. The purpose was to determine if the function of places in Cache County, Utah of a given population was the same as the function of places in Snohomish County, Washington of the same population.

The data for Snohomish County, Washington were taken from a report on the central places in that county prepared by Brian J. L. Berry and William Garrison of the University of Washington Geography Department.

Evidence is presented to support the conclusion that these two …

Child's Perception Of Parental Attitude And Its Relationship To Academic Achievement And Problem Awareness, Mohammed K. Fazel May 1968

Child's Perception Of Parental Attitude And Its Relationship To Academic Achievement And Problem Awareness, Mohammed K. Fazel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was aimed at finding relationships between the triad of academic achievement, child's perception of parental attitude, and his problem awareness. The study was designed with reference to three postulates of phenomenological psychology. (a) The perceptual field of an individual at any moment determines his behavior of the moment. (b) The term phenomenal self is formed by the individual's interaction with others. (c) The basic need of the organism is the maintenance and actualization of the self.

A survey of the literature tended to support the thesis that there was a positive relationship between educational achievement and parental acceptance. …

Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson May 1966

Man And His Water Resource, Dean F. Peterson

Faculty Honor Lectures

Several preceding honor lectures have dealt with water. The title of a recent one, "Water and Man," by Dr. Sterling Taylor closely resembles the one for this paper. Dr. Taylor's paper dealt primarily with the physical science of water. This one will consider the nature of the use of water by man and the technological and institutional structure related to that use. Thus there should be no serious overlap. My friends in the social sciences may be surprised, too, to find that somehow this lecture has spilled over into their territory. But engineering is the implementation of science and technology. …

Navajo Student Food Preferences, Kathlyn L. Coffman May 1966

Navajo Student Food Preferences, Kathlyn L. Coffman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adapt -- “to make suitable to requirements; adjust or modify fittingly." Adaptability is a trait which has been attributed to Navajo Indians by anthropologists, educators, novelists, psychologists, artists -- in fact, by almost everyone who has had dealings with them over a period of time. Yet, to identify specific examples of their adaptability and the attempt to measure the effect upon interpersonal relations of evidences of adaptation has proved to be no easy task.

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson May 1966

Stuttering In Utah Fifth Grade Children: An Incidence Study, Thomas S. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Children afflicted with speech disorders represent the largest single group of exceptional children. The numbers of speech defectives reach between 2 and 2½ million or about 5% of the population (Johnson et al., 1956). Newman (1961) has disputed this claim and has stressed the difference to be made between speech differences and handicapping conditions:

It can be confidently stated that 5% of the population categorized speech handicapped, have speech differences of such a nature that the differences can be pointed out, recorded, classified, or quantified in some reliable manner. But that does not necessarily make the conditions handicapping or impairing. …

The Effects Of Teaching Experience On The Counselor's Perception Of His Role And Effectiveness In Counseling, Benne D. Williams May 1965

The Effects Of Teaching Experience On The Counselor's Perception Of His Role And Effectiveness In Counseling, Benne D. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Prior to World War II, the question as to whether or not public school counselors needed public school teaching experience would never have entered the minds of counselor educators, employers, or any other persons concerned with this matter. In the teaching field, a premium was placed on experience and often times an apprenticeship for a position had to be served. With today's shortage of teachers and counselors, a number of persons have been employed as public school counselors without teaching experience. The effects of the employment of public school counselors without school teaching experience has caused many questions to be …

An Evaluation Of The Differences Among Lower, Middle And Upper Socio-Economic Groups In The Sixth Grades In The Ogden City Schools With Regard To Scholastic Achievement, Milton Kendrick May 1965

An Evaluation Of The Differences Among Lower, Middle And Upper Socio-Economic Groups In The Sixth Grades In The Ogden City Schools With Regard To Scholastic Achievement, Milton Kendrick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

There are some inadequacies in our American way of life. One of these is the inadequate help and attention given to the problem of children who become shackled with their lower class environment with little or no desire or incentive to rise above this. The major challenge to any teacher is the ability to stimulate and inspire children to achieve or succeed. There are different degrees of achievement. For one child, great achievement is not the same as for another. The realization of this prompted the decision to see what differences in achievement exist among the three main socio-economic classes. …

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey May 1961

An Analysis Of The Differential Responses Of A Group Of Nursery School Children To A Variety Of Musical Presentations, Eva Louise Godfrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The problem of what kinds of music provide the most meaning for the young child has long been a concern of the author. It arises not only out of close experience with young children, but also out of a concern for the responsibility of providing them with meaningful aesthetic experiences. From this background of experience the problem is not purely an academic one. Its first and ultimate concern is an experiential one. Because it arises out of this particular background, the analysis of the problem and its study is less concerned with academic and scientific validity than might otherwise have …

How The Curricula Of The Special Navajo Programs Meet The Needs Of The Students At The Intermountain School In Regard To Their Use Of Alcoholic Beverages, C. Stewart Munz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Straddling the Continental Divide, from the Chuska Mountains t o the San Juan and Little Colorado rivers, mostly in Arizona, but partly in New Mexico and Utah, lies 23,574 square miles of desert; home to the estimated 75 to 90 thousand Navajo Indians. Unable to more than eke out a bare existence in a barren land where almost 30 acres of range are needed to sustain one sheep, unprepared after generations of isolation and neglect to leave this reservation for areas where a decend standard of living can be had, the Navajos, since 1950, have been the object of a …

Land Fragmentation And Water Utilization In Relation To Their Social Milieu, Paragonah, Utah, Robert G. Painter May 1956

Land Fragmentation And Water Utilization In Relation To Their Social Milieu, Paragonah, Utah, Robert G. Painter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Practices of land use in Utah show need for community action aimed at more adequate utilization of land and water resources. Use of land for crop production in Utah is limited by topography, soil type, elevation, climate, and moisture (26, p.3). Because of limitations imposed, only a small portion of the land area may be used for cultivated farming. As a rule, large land holdings in Utah are not regularly tilled but are used as range for raising livestock.

Farm cropland may be separated into two general classes: irrigated and dry-land. In general, the cropland of most farms is entirely …

The Iranian Student In Logan, An Exploratory Study Of Foreign Student Social Experience And Adjustment, Ruth C. Busch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study to be reported in the following pages is an exploratory investigation of the social experiences, adjustments, and attitudes of Iranian students at the Utah State Agricultural College. It was devised as a preliminary, not a terminal, investigation. Two possible avenues of further research were considered when the scope of the study was delimited.

  1. A study of the social experience and adjustment of all foreign students in Logan, irrespective of nationality.
  2. A study of the social experience and adjustment of Iranian students--in the United States and after their return home--irrespective of school attended in the United States.

Both types …

Socio-Economic Factors Influencing The Intent Of Rural Youths To Migrate From Emery, San Juan, Kane, And Piute Counties Of Utah, Abdul Ghani Joseph Habbab

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Rural communities in Utah continue to lose large numbers of their population. Counties with the highest birth rate are, in the main, those which have decreased most or remained relatively stationary in recent years. Rural migration presents a problem to the communities involved and to the individuals who move.

Attitude Of The Asiatic Students Attending The Utah State Agricultural College Toward The United States, Logan, And The U.S.A.C, Basher A. Aridi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Man is a social animal. Without participating in social activities and enjoying the social privileges, man cannot live but physically. He has something in common with the rest of the human race and a particular interest in his own community which imposes on and shares with him the same cultural pattern. The different cultures have a universal cultural pattern common to mankind, (32, p. 129), but in the same time there are many traits which prohibit the different groups from understanding each other, not because of languages, but because of the existence of the cultural barriers. To cross the barriers …
