Microwear And Striae Of Retzius Of Canines Of The Wild Japanese Monkeys (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo
Microwear And Striae Of Retzius Of Canines Of The Wild Japanese Monkeys (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo
Scanning Microscopy
This is a description of microwear and striae of Retzius of canine teeth of wild-caught female Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) from Oita Takasakiyama, Kyushu. Micrographs were taken of high resolution casts using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Before the casts were made, the diet of the captive monkeys was water-softened for three or four days. This softened diet probably added little wear to the surfaces of the teeth. These animals are part of a sample used in a previous report published in this journal. Others have observed that wild Japanese monkeys eat hard foods (such as grasshoppers, cicads …

Affirmative Action And Utility Theory, Jennifer J. Clark
Affirmative Action And Utility Theory, Jennifer J. Clark
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Blacks have been discriminated against for many decades in the United States. In 1964, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was created to eliminate discrimination in hiring practices. Affirmative action plans were later implemented to create equity in places of employment. Both affirmative action and the EEOC were designed to create equality of the races and eliminate racial tension in the United States.
A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson
A Critique Of "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis", Kyle Robson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
The nature of deity through out the history of philosophy has always been a subject of debate, from some of the earliest writings, philosophers and theologians have given arguments for and against the existence and nature of God. Beckwith and Parrish, in "The Mormon Concept Of God, A Philosophical Analysis," add another page to this on-going debate with their attack of the "Mormon concept of God." In the introduction Beckwith and Parrish explain that it is their aim to show
(1) that the Mormon concept of God differs radically from the classical concept of God,
(2) that the Mormon concept …

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
Recent work in the upper San Juan Basin has more than doubled the number of known, as well as excavated, sites. Without exception, this work has modified and expanded long-held views of the PaleoIndian, Archaic, Anasazi, and Navajo people who inhabited the area. The papers presented in this volume reflect these changes and represent the cutting edge of southwestern archaeology.

In Vitro And In Vivo Replication For Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Cervical Region Of Human Teeth, Joan Bevenius, Kjell Hultenby
In Vitro And In Vivo Replication For Scanning Electron Microscopy Of The Cervical Region Of Human Teeth, Joan Bevenius, Kjell Hultenby
Scanning Microscopy
A replica technique for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the cervical region of human teeth was evaluated on extracted premolar teeth by comparing the replicas and the original specimens in the SEM. For in vivo application, the technique was modified to circumvent contamination by saliva and gingival exudate. Impressions were taken with an addition silicone polyvinylsiloxane material and the replicas were poured in epoxy resin die material. A surface active dentine conditioner facilitated flow of the impression material into irregular surface areas; in vivo a scavenger impression was used to remove surface debris. Custom trays were made of light-cured acrylic …
Scanning Electron Microscopic Analysis Of Dental Wear On The Heavily Worn Second Molars Of The Wild Japanese Monkey (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo
Scanning Electron Microscopic Analysis Of Dental Wear On The Heavily Worn Second Molars Of The Wild Japanese Monkey (Macaca Fuscata), Teruyuki Hojo
Scanning Microscopy
Microscopic features on scanning electron micro-graphs of epoxy-replicas of the second molars of nine wild-caught adult female Japanese monkeys, Macaca fuscata, from Oita Takasakiyama, Kyushu, were measured using a digitizer. These monkeys had been fed a monkey-diet during three or four days of captivity before replicas were made. Six of these specimens showed such heavily worn second molars that narrow peripheral enamel bands surrounded large dentin exposures and the cusps of the others had been worn off. Microwear measurements from sites near facet 9 were compared with those of facet 9 of three kinds of hard-object feeding primates from …

The Play Of Visually Impaired Preschoolers With Their Mothers, Claudia Weber
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis answers the following questions: (a) Is the Play Assessment Scale a true measure of development? (b) Does the mother have a significant, positive influence on the child's level of development? (c) Does the mother's interactional style influence the child's development as measured by the Play Assessment Scale and the Battelle Developmental Inventory? The subjects were 13 visually impaired preschoolers. Development was measured with the Play Assessment Scale and the Battelle Developmental Inventory. Maternal interactional style was assessed with the Parent/Caregiver Involvement Scale. The study indicated that the Play Assessment Scale is a valid, reliable measure of development in …

"War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." (Orwell 1949, p. 5). Indeed, in 1960, when President Kennedy announced his future plans for a Peace Corps of young Americans, there were already an estimated 10,000 Americans working in the Third World country of Vietnam in the capacity of "military advisors". By 1963 there were 17,000 such Americans in Vietnam and another 7,000 Americans in 44 other Third World countries working as Peace Corps Volunteers (Rice 1985).
In 1835, reflecting on the then young America, Tocqueville stated that "of all nations, those most fond of peace are democratic nations" and …

The Swett Homestead: An Oral History 1909-1970, Eric G. Swedin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Making extensive use of oral interviews with the surviving children, this thesis is an biography of Oscar and Emma Swett and their children, who lived on a homestead in Greendale, Utah, (near Flaming Gorge Reservoir) from 1909 to 1970. The family is representative of a group of families who moved to Greendale and engaged in small-scale cattle ranching. The introduction of new technology changed their lifestyles and homestead economics, while simultaneously Greendale evolved from a rural agricultural environment to become part of a National Recreation Area.

Reservation Leadership And The Progressive-Traditional Dichotomy: William Wash And The Northern Utes, 1865-1928, Davis Rich Lewis
History Faculty Publications
In the early twentieth century, Indian Bureau officials noted an increasing incidence of tribal factionalism parallel to changes in Indian reservation leadership. They described this factionalism in terms of a progressive-traditional dichotomy. Modern scholars have unintentionally fallen into this semantic trap. This article explores the complexity of individual motivations and factional politics among the Northern Utes through the life of William Wash and suggests that such cultural middlemen offer a more complete picture of reservation politics.

Human Hair Morphology: A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study On A Male Caucasoid And A Computerized Classification Of Regional Differences, W. M. Hess, R. E. Seegmiller, J. S. Gardner, J. V. Allen, Susan Barendregt
Scanning Microscopy
The present study was performed to provide a better understanding of the morphological variations of mammalian hair. Terminal hair samples were obtained from different regions of the body of the same Caucasian male. All hair samples were either cleaned or treated before being examined with scanning electron microscopy. As human scalp hair grew it appeared small like lanugo hair, but the increase in diameter appeared to have been relatively rapid. As hair increased in diameter the appearance of the scales changed. Neck hair was slightly smaller in diameter than scalp hair, and axillary hair was slightly smaller in diameter than …

Dietary Differences And Microwear On The Teeth Of Late Stone Age And Early Modern People From Western Japan, Teruyuki Hojo
Dietary Differences And Microwear On The Teeth Of Late Stone Age And Early Modern People From Western Japan, Teruyuki Hojo
Scanning Microscopy
A small sample of human teeth from western Japan was examined under a scanning electron microscope. All were from sites of two different ages: a Late Stone Age site dating from approximately 4,000 B.P., and an Early Modern site dating from 150-200 B.P. SEM analyses reveal that the scratches on the teeth from the Late Stone Age site tend to be larger and more frequent than those on the teeth from the Early Modern site. These microwear differences may be related to dietary differences between two populations.

Office Signs: Reflectors Of Organizational Culture, Melvin Leon Jeppson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Social scientists widely believe that symbols can reveal important information about personalities, values, beliefs and characteristics of the communicator. Although scholars from fields such as semiology, psychology, sociology and anthropology have analyzed symbols and the messages they reveal as cultural indicators, few communication researchers have studied organizational symbols as organizational cultural indicators. In an article entitled, "Organizational Symbolism: A Topic to Expand Organizational Analysis," Dandridge, Mitroff and Joyce chastened communication researchers for overlooking a wealth of organizational data available through the study of organizational symbols. Stephen R. Barley supported these claims when he wrote that culture is embodied in and …
Confucianism And Chinese Family Structure, Maren Watts
Confucianism And Chinese Family Structure, Maren Watts
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Confucianism has dictated the structure of the family in Chinese society. The family is the foundation of the Chinese social structure. It has been the focal point of cultural and social issues for thousands of years. Various philosophers have contributed to the value system that places family life in such high esteem. Confucius, one of the major contributors, stressed the value of order in the family and the virtue of filial piety. Based upon his teachings, the practices and relationships existent in the ideal family, came to be known as the Confucian family model. This family structure, which defines the …

The Effects Of Diary Writing Support Groups On Women's Depression, Self-Acceptance And Well-Being, Linda Elaine Barnes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was conducted to determine whether learning specific writing techniques and discussing them in a small group is more beneficial to women than writing a journal using self-taught techniques, or not writing at all.
Instruments used included the Beck Depression Inventory and the California Personality Inventory (Self-Acceptance and Well-Being scales).
The literature review covers four general areas: a brief discussion of the impact of contemporary feminism on traditional therapy; an examination of feminist therapy, specifically its advocacy of consciousness-raising groups as a therapy alternative; women's self-reports on diary or journal writing; and information on modern non-literary journal uses including …

Basis Of The Structure And Development Of Mammalian Enamel As Seen By Scanning Electron Microscopy, A. Boyde, M. Fortelius, K. S. Lester, L. B. Martin
Scanning Microscopy
Mature enamel is the most mineralized of mammalian tissues, contains the least water and therefore does not present problems of shrinkage on preparation for SEM. However, the developing enamel is highly hydrated and presents severe problems in preparation.
The structure of enamel is determined by the activity of its individual formative cells and their group behaviour. The peculiar, unequal secretion of matrix at the distal pole of the ameloblast leads to the presence of characteristically shaped pits in the surface of the formative tissue. Crystals grow in a special relationship to this surface. Sharp changes in orientation of the surface …
Contact, Support, And Friction: Gender Differences In Social Networks, Lori A. Cramer
Contact, Support, And Friction: Gender Differences In Social Networks, Lori A. Cramer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper examines the extent to which personal social network ties serve as support or conflict systems, or both. It investigates the differences in perception of the extent of supportive/antagonistic ties by size of community of residence and by gender of network ties cited. It was found that both support and conflict networks were more extensive for the smallest and largest communities than for a second small community which recently experienced very rapid growth. This suggests that growth patterns may be more significant in understanding network relations than community size. The findings also indicate that range of contacts reported does …

The Effects Of Prey Vulnerability, Density, And Patch Replenishment In An Operant Analogue Of Foraging, Michael James Dewulf
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Foraging behavior has recently become a popular area of research with which ethologists, behavioral ecologists, and experimental psychologists converge their traditionally separate disciplines into a more multidisciplinary framework. Ethologists and behavioral ecologists usually study foraging as it occurs in the natural environment or the "field," while experimental psychologists contrive laboratory simulations of foraging and make the assumption, sometimes incorrectly, that generalization occurs across settings, situations, and species. Scientific advances are now beginning to occur in the ability of laboratory researchers to better simulate foraging as it occurs in the field. Field researchers are also becoming more willing to accept these …
