Preparing Your Bird For The Poultry Showmanship Contest, David D. Frame May 2012

Preparing Your Bird For The Poultry Showmanship Contest, David D. Frame

All Current Publications

The first and most important rule of showmanship is kindness to your bird. The more cooperative your bird is, the better success you’ll have in the show ring. Careful preparation prior to the show is necessary to be an effective show person.

Determining Compost Carryover For Optimal Use In An Organic Corn Squash Rotation, Davey J.R. Olsen May 2012

Determining Compost Carryover For Optimal Use In An Organic Corn Squash Rotation, Davey J.R. Olsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 2008–2011 a graduate project was undertaken by Davey Olsen under the supervision of Utah State University (USU) Plant, Soils and Climate professors, Drs. Jennifer Reeve, Dan Drost, and Astrid Jacobson. The project investigated a new way of measuring the benefits of applying compost to organically certified horticultural crops. In particular, the carryover of these benefits in the three years following a one-time application was studied. A field trial at the USU Organic Farm modeled the carryover of nitrogen and phosphorus in a corn and squash rotation, while laboratory analysis investigated aspects of nitrogen availability and compost decomposition over time. …

A Baseline Study Of Biofuel Feedstock Growth On Non-Traditional Agronomic Land In Utah, Dallas A. Hanks May 2012

A Baseline Study Of Biofuel Feedstock Growth On Non-Traditional Agronomic Land In Utah, Dallas A. Hanks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nearly all highway, airport, and military areas in Utah cost money to maintain and are often safe harbor for noxious weeds and pests. This project hypothesized that money could be saved and biofuel feedstocks could be grown in these areas, improving sustainability. Agronomic conditions and growth methods were tested to determine if biofuel feedstock production could occur on these marginal, non-traditional plots of land. Models developed illustrate that maintenance costs for these areas can be nullified if oilseed crops grown yield 600 pounds/acre and are used for biodiesel production. This feedstock yield would result in approximately 25 gallons of biodiesel …

The Interacting Effects Of Clumped Seed Dispersal And Distance- And Density-Dependent Mortality On Seedling Recruitment Patterns, Noelle G. Beckman, Claudia Neuhauser, Helene C. Muller-Landau Apr 2012

The Interacting Effects Of Clumped Seed Dispersal And Distance- And Density-Dependent Mortality On Seedling Recruitment Patterns, Noelle G. Beckman, Claudia Neuhauser, Helene C. Muller-Landau

Biology Faculty Publications

  1. Seed dispersal and natural enemies both influence spatial patterns of seedlings, which in turn influence future abiotic and biotic interactions, with consequences for plant populations, distributions and diversity. Clumped seed deposition is common, especially for vertebrate-dispersed seeds, and has the potential to significantly affect interactions with density-responsive enemies, yet has received relatively little attention.
  2. We used spatially explicit simulation models to examine how different patterns of seed dispersal and natural enemy attack structure seedling spatial patterns. We simulated clumped seed dispersal by combining a two-dimensional Student’s T dispersal kernel for expected seed rain with a negative binomial distribution for seed …

Bioclimatic Design Guidelines: A Valuable Tool For Landscape Architects, Laura Patricia Reyes Romero Apr 2012

Bioclimatic Design Guidelines: A Valuable Tool For Landscape Architects, Laura Patricia Reyes Romero

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

This research project aims to create awareness, among landscape architects, on the importance of ecological design. Bioclimatic knowledge contributes to enhance the coexistence between natural and built environments, resulting in healthy places with high quality of life. The study examines ways of graphically representing climate information, to facilitate the understanding and application of bioclimatic design strategies for human comfort. Cache Valley, Utah is used as an example to demonstrate how extensive data can be represented graphically in a more readable and useful manner for practicing professionals. Temperature, humidity, wind and solar information were analyzed and converted into graphics through methods …

Technological Evolution And Its Effects On Graphic Design And Textbook Design, Danielle Renae Allen Apr 2012

Technological Evolution And Its Effects On Graphic Design And Textbook Design, Danielle Renae Allen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Technological Evolution and its Effects on Graphic Design and Textbook Design Although fundamental principles of art and design have been around for thousands of years, the development of new technology has greatly altered how designers must use these foundations. This paper investigates how this complex history has changed graphic design practices and specifically the design of textbooks. It also discusses technology’s huge role in changing the way design fundamentals are taught and practiced and how this affects where the profession is headed. Through researching the history of graphic design and then examining three editions of the textbook, Design Basics by …

The Glass Is Half-Full: Overestimating The Quality Of A Novel Environment Is Advantageous, Oded Berger-Tal, Tal Avgar Apr 2012

The Glass Is Half-Full: Overestimating The Quality Of A Novel Environment Is Advantageous, Oded Berger-Tal, Tal Avgar

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

According to optimal foraging theory, foraging decisions are based on the forager's current estimate of the quality of its environment. However, in a novel environment, a forager does not possess information regarding the quality of the environment, and may make a decision based on a biased estimate. We show, using a simple simulation model, that when facing uncertainty in heterogeneous environments it is better to overestimate the quality of the environment (to be an “optimist”) than underestimate it, as optimistic animals learn the true value of the environment faster due to higher exploration rate. Moreover, we show that when the …
